Agreed. How an airport doesn't have an agreed upon procedure, involving evacuating the plane ASAP, for such a scenario is mind boggling. Sounded like they were working it out as they went along. If I were the captain I'd have been evacuating much sooner, probably as soon as the plane was off the active runway or as soon as it became apparent air stairs would take some time to arrive.
I don't think this was as much on ATC as the airport authority... She was working with what she was being told by others. I think she did well given what she was dealing with...the Captain made a call and did what he needed to do, also given his circumstances. They did well with what they had
This a teachable moment for Bermuda, the emergency protocols have to be updated NOW. Kudos to the ATC she did a great job, she isn't in control of the emergency services or whom ever drives the stairs. She was only the messenger.
Stand by and please don't explode in the next 40 minutes. Perhaps the airport should revise the protocol again. The stairs are somewhere within easy reach and should be on the way to the plane in a few minutes.

Someone along the chain kept saying "on their way" or "soon" as a white lie, not realizing the damage they were doing.

You probably aren't aware, but the British Airways flight to Heathrow is typically the last outgoing flight of the day at BDA, so most of the airport ops, other than critical, have either already wound down or are in the process of winding down, esp. if the flight is late as it appears it was this time... the only regularly scheduled ops after BA leaves are 3 inbound RONs - AA from MIA, and now two BermudAir from FLL and HPN (assuming none of them cancel/go tech/are delayed - which they frequently are) and they only require minimal handling/processing staff... all to say, the airport typically is in the process of shutting down by the time British is lining up on the active so there is some practical exception to your assertion; and this situation is an WILDLY a-typical for BDA on top of that.

I loved his professionalism despite his frustration. With the volume of air traffic this airport has, sounds like they should update and reconfigure their emergency policies. They did Ok in the long run, but if there were a bomb threat I would not like to sit on a plane for over 40 minutes and just wait to see if it was going to blow up or not while waiting for help.

We love Bermuda, and it's a really laid back place to enjoy at leisure, but this is one of the most clusterf*cked handlings of an emergency that I've ever seen. The pilots were totally professional, but the airport and emergency services support were beyond ridiculous, incompetent, uncoordinated, ineffectual, and posed a serious risk to the passengers on the aircraft. I'm sure this incident will be investigated and discussed for quite a while. One can only hope that the authority for this airport, which handles many international flights, can get it's act together.
Painful to listen to, but not sure I can agree with any of the conclusions of other commenters saying X did amazingly and Y was terrible. I think the incident will make an excellent case study. And if fault is to be assigned, it can be mainly at the feet of those that sent the threats in the first place.
Classic mess, which is to be expected un most places and the procedures don’t really take into account, so captains have it very difficult to not initiate a full blown evacuation, even if they don’t think the threat is not credible
I get the impression that the poor ATC controller was dealing with the fact that no one at the airport was doing anything. Not sure why fire dept doesn't want to approach a non-burning aircraft, as their job is to approach burning aircraft which are far more dangerous than an emailed bomb threat.
Did you miss the part where there was a separate simultaneous bomb threat made to the Terminal... the place from where the on duty airport authorities all operate? At that time of night, up until the threat was acknowledged operations would have been typical and typical operations for BDA have the airport in the process of shutting down aside from critical personnel only for the last 3 inbound RON flights... a cluster f*, sure, but practically an unavoidable one, tbh.

A very difficult situation for the BA crew and captain. Do we evacuate or wait? The risks of injuries associated with using the slides, controlling 100s of people on an active airfield without assistance are huge, to say nothing of the wheelchair passengers and children on board. What a decision to be faced with, is this a credible risk of a bomb exploding on board or not??....one stair set and a few ground crew could possibly have managed this situation safely?
ATC has procedures they have to follow. The tower supervisor is the one I think who could have controlled the situation better. Bomb threat on an aircraft in takeoff position. Bomb threat on the airport terminal. ACTION - Close the airport, order all inbound aircraft to either hold or divert. Have ATC Taxi speedbird safely away from any aircraft holding for takeoff and remove passengers via emergency slides if no airstairs were immediately available. Evacuating the aircraft immediately was the at the Captain's discretion. I'm sure there will be changes made to emergency preparedness after this.
And what and the thousands of people in the airport? The plane has few peopl and, is more difficult to safely evacuate. The airport has a limited set of resources, triage says the plane is a lower priority.
They are dealing with a credible bomb threat on a plane with 197 people on board loaded with 50 tons of fuel! It took them more than 40 minutes to get the emergency fire services to the aircraft and an hour to get steps to the aircraft. This is utter and absolute incompetence by the Tower and airport authorities. The controller has no awareness or even common-sense about the potential deadliness of the situation. She and her supervisor should be immediately reassigned to non-critical duties pending an investigation and full review of emergency services and procedures at the airport. The crew of the aircraft should have been vociferous with the Tower and notwithstanding possible injuries from a slide evacuation, evacuated via the slides within 10 minutes rather than continue putting lives at risk.
What a screwed up deal that was! I felt sorry for the crew and the tower operator. Apparently the one person trained in how to drive the stair truck went home or something. With the added bomb threat in the terminal, apparently security forgot all about the plane.
I guess the concept of “for bloody sakes, someone get over there and figure it out” hasn’t reached Bermuda yet. I can drive every other type of truck on the field, can’t see how hard the stairs would be.

because they tend to be towed by EBT's which have a brilliant top speed of 10MPH. and Stairs also tend to have a MAX tow speed of 10MPH. But why there isn't steps there on the incase is a big question
A bit miffed that ATC couldn't dedicate their entire attention to the BA flight. The pilots had to remind them time and again which is a bit disappointing. They really should have been all over that plane, I really feel sorry for the pilots who were left in the dark like that.
Did you miss the point that there was also a bomb threat at the terminal. Certainly they didn't want the aircraft passengers to come to the terminal if the threat had been real. However, the captain should have taxied to the remote area and activated the emergency slides to get the passengers off the aircraft and away from it until the aircraft was deemed safe. I'm sure the buses may have been used to get passengers out of the terminal and on planes boarded already at the gate.
@@TheGospelQuartetParadise Emergency slides evacuations generally end up with broken bones. Plus no medical assistance and nowhere to go in this particular situation. I bet many of the passengers would have been extremely unhappy in the event of such emergency evacuation.

Emergency slides are very steep in the 777 so people WOULD be injured and the wheelchair people would DEFINITIVELY suffer seriously in that case. Stairs is always the better option. You cannot just evacuate willy nilly in case the threat is for real, maybe the bomber is watching and decides to remote trigger the bomb if he sees buses or whatnot.

Have a look for a channel called Mentour Pilot - he has loads of videos about the operation of planes, and I’m sure he has one about the emergency slides. They are quite complex things, and if triggered accidentally it requires a few hours work by engineers to reinstall them.

Evacuating by slides is a good way for grandma to break a hip and die a week later. Bomb threats are always fake nowadays so you need to weigh that with the injuries passengers will suffer evacuating by slides. I feel for the pilots because they are in a terrible spot. Also, being on an active apron means no passengers can get up from their seats. That’s likely a major consideration the pilots were making.

Stop and evacuate ASAP is the only sensible thing to do, which is what the pilots were trying to do, probably fearing for their own lives as well. This was a total fiasco, and could have been an absolute disaster.

If the bomber wants a negotiation but sees that they prepare for evacuation before he got to make any demands, he will detonate. The same goes if the bombers have no demands: the moment the door will open for evacuation, they will detonate.
It's really poor form to email in bomb threats, especially two at once. My advice for the airport is to radically improve junk email filtering, with an auto-responder that requires time-sensitive events like bomb threats to be phoned in to prevent double-booking. Email just isn't appropriate and they have to set firm boundaries with terrorists.
If it's an extremely low probability maybe they should have continued the flight. If it's worth stopping the flight for, it's worth evacuating immediately for. I would've opened the doors myself if I was onboard and knew what was going on.

Read the stats: evacuating via slides always causes injuries. Here is an example of a captain making the right call to be patient and understand that rarely a bomb thread is an actual bomb. He waited for the stairs and evacuated all the aircraft with nobody getting a single scratch.

Bomb threats are rare and when they do happen its most likely a hoax.
BA Captain needs to calm the f down. I hope he gets reprimanded. Just like pilots don't want to be bothered constantly in an emergency and don't tell ATC every detail upfront, ATC didn't need to be bothered constantly and won't tell them every detail upfront. They have reasons for not evacuating the aircraft immediately and keeping people away. We've been through this before and we've seen what impatience does in a situation like this.
They switched the doors because anything past L2 is first class and behind L2 is business/economy. Would make sense to meet in the middle wouldnt it mate?. Dont know what video you're watching but the captain is very calm and following procedure. There is only so much patience you can have when you're told you have a bomb onboard, and then the airport staff decide to take the p*ss and take 20 minutes to attend the aircraft. Just cause it's functional aircraft doesnt mean the bomb threat is rules out. They would've circled back to the airport if the atc told them of the bomb threat anyway. Though the bomb threat was a hoax, and they're unlikely to happen 40 MINUTES on the ground whilst there could be a possible ticking bomb is overkill. Pilots dont typically get told of wheelchair passengers, not like it's really their duty anyway more so the cabin crew who have even less idea of whats happening than the captain themselves. Cannot possibly blame them. The flight was departing at 8pm and was the last departure . There was not many people in the terminal. The pilots ended up waiting for the stairs and had patience so what exactly is your point
Definitely watching a very different video to the one I watched. The BA pilot was very calm, professional and precise throughout. I would like to see how you would respond if someone said you might be sitting on a bomb. Very stupid remarks David Pruitt whoever and whatever you may be.

The crew of the aircraft should have been vociferous with the Tower and notwithstanding possible injuries from a slide evacuation, evacuated via the slides within 10 minutes rather than continue putting lives at risk.

What a screwed up deal that was! I felt sorry for the crew and the tower operator. Apparently the one person trained in how to drive the stair truck went home or something. With the added bomb threat in the terminal, apparently security forgot all about the plane.
I guess the concept of “for bloody sakes, someone get over there and figure it out” hasn’t reached Bermuda yet. I can drive every other type of truck on the field, can’t see how hard the stairs would be.
Just another example of the state of the world now. If anything is out of the norm no one has any clue what to do. I swear the world has become completely dysfunctional.

because they tend to be towed by EBT's which have a brilliant top speed of 10MPH. and Stairs also tend to have a MAX tow speed of 10MPH. But why there isn't steps there on the incase is a big question
@@jordanrichardson4448the self propelled ones at major airports are on truck chassis, and can go much faster than one would generally appreciate.
A bit miffed that ATC couldn't dedicate their entire attention to the BA flight. The pilots had to remind them time and again which is a bit disappointing. They really should have been all over that plane, I really feel sorry for the pilots who were left in the dark like that.
Did you miss the point that there was also a bomb threat at the terminal. Certainly they didn't want the aircraft passengers to come to the terminal if the threat had been real. However, the captain should have taxied to the remote area and activated the emergency slides to get the passengers off the aircraft and away from it until the aircraft was deemed safe. I'm sure the buses may have been used to get passengers out of the terminal and on planes boarded already at the gate.
@@TheGospelQuartetParadise Emergency slides evacuations generally end up with broken bones. Plus no medical assistance and nowhere to go in this particular situation.
I bet many of the passengers would have been extremely unhappy in the event of such emergency evacuation.
@@TheGospelQuartetParadise Uhm no you cannot do just whatever. Emergency slides are very steep in the 777 so people WOULD be injured and the wheelchair people would DEFINITIVELY suffer seriously in that case. Stairs is always the better option.
You cannot just evacuate willy nilly in case the threat is for real, maybe the bomber is watching and decides to remote trigger the bomb if he sees buses or whatnot.
@@canadiannomad4088Have you any idea how an emergency slide is attached to an exit and what triggers it? It’s a bit more involved than blowing up an air mattress and sticking it to the door frame with Velcro.
Edit - I see you removed your comment. You actually raised an interesting point. Have a look for a channel called Mentour Pilot - he has loads of videos about the operation of planes, and I’m sure he has one about the emergency slides. They are quite complex things, and if triggered accidentally it requires a few hours work by engineers to reinstall them.

While relatively rare, the most serious evacuation-associated injuries were the result of jumping out of exits or off of wings.

Evacuating by slides is a good way for grandma to break a hip and die a week later. Bomb threats are always fake nowadays so you need to weigh that with the injuries passengers will suffer evacuating by slides. I feel for the pilots because they are in a terrible spot.
Also, being on an active apron means no passengers can get up from their seats. That’s likely a major consideration the pilots were making.

The Tower supervisor should have closed the airport and evacuated the aircraft immediately via slides. You're speculating about granny. There have been no reports lately of anyone suffering serious injuries in a slide evacuation.
You don't know that bomb threats are always fake nowadays. It's attitudes like that which get people killed. Stop and evacuate ASAP is the only sensible thing to do, which is what the pilots were trying to do, probably fearing for their own lives as well. This was a total fiasco, and could have been an absolute disaster.
@@DerekWalsh-l4i If the threat is real, whoever controls the bomb will make sure to detonate before evacuation. It won't make any difference whether they'll try to evacuate via slides or steps imo.

If the bomber wants a negotiation but sees that they prepare for evacuation before he got to make any demands, he will detonate.
The same goes if the bombers have no demands: the moment the door will open for evacuation, they will detonate.

It's really poor form to email in bomb threats, especially two at once. My advice for the airport is to radically improve junk email filtering, with an auto-responder that requires time-sensitive events like bomb threats to be phoned in to prevent double-booking. Email just isn't appropriate and they have to set firm boundaries with terrorists.

If it's an extremely low probability maybe they should have continued the flight. If it's worth stopping the flight for, it's worth evacuating immediately for. I would've opened the doors myself if I was onboard and knew what was going on.

The captain obviously didnt have the brains to evacuate using the slides as soon as he stopped on the runway...his next cue to evacuate asap was when they discovered the terminal was evacuating as well...i know it gets messy with the slides...but lives saved are more important...period .

Right...u potentially sit on a bomb with 200 ppl behind u for eternity...another thing...I captain a commercial jet with 200+ ppl for a living...captains talk with the atc for that long shows absolute indecisiveness and fear to deal with the mess of the slides..if ure an airline captain ,( which ure probably not ) ,would u sit that long in the aircraft even if u thought there's just a 1% chance of a bomb being on board sir ? Read the stats: evacuating via slides always causes injuries. Here is an example of a captain making the right call to be patient and understand that rarely a bomb thread is an actual bomb. He waited for the stairs and evacuated all the aircraft with nobody getting a single scratch.

And evacuating via slides causes injuries, costs thousands to put the slides back in and would mean, aircraft out of service for the next weeks if not months. Put passengers stranded for even longer. Bomb threats rarely ever happen, last one that happened was in 2016 in a third world corrupt country by a terror attack. Bermuda uses security measurements no different from major airports. Bomb threats are rare and when they do happen its most likely a hoax.

BA Captain needs to calm the f down. I hope he gets reprimanded. Just like pilots don't want to be bothered constantly in an emergency and don't tell ATC every detail upfront, ATC didn't need to be bothered constantly and won't tell them every detail upfront. They have two bomb threats they're dealing with. Adding a mayday on top of that, requesting the ambulance, and telling everyone to do everything and come to him makes things worse not better. Let the experts in security handle the security. He's got a perfectly functional aircraft that was going to be in the sky for 4 hours, they can handle 40 minutes on the ground. And after that he's got the ballsn to tell them to change the door because he wasn't prepared after doing nothing but complaining for 40 minutes? And he neglected to mention the two wheelchair passengers? The airport was busy dealing with the people in the terminal, the planes on the ground, and the planes still in the air. They have reasons for not evacuating the aircraft immediately and keeping people away. We've been through this before and we've seen what impatience does in a situation like this.
They switched the doors because anything past L2 is first class and behind L2 is business/economy. Would make sense to meet in the middle wouldnt it mate?. Dont know what video you're watching but the captain is very calm and following procedure. There is only so much patience you can have when you're told you have a bomb onboard, and then the airport staff decide to take the p*ss and take 20 minutes to attend the aircraft. Just cause it's functional aircraft doesnt mean the bomb threat is rules out. They would've circled back to the airport if the atc told them of the bomb threat anyway. Though the bomb threat was a hoax, and they're unlikely to happen 40 MINUTES on the ground whilst there could be a possible ticking bomb is overkill. Pilots dont typically get told of wheelchair passengers, not like it's really their duty anyway more so the cabin crew who have even less idea of whats happening than the captain themselves. Cannot possibly blame them. The flight was departing at 8pm and was the last departure . There was not many people in the terminal. The pilots ended up waiting for the stairs and had patience so what exactly is your point
Definitely watching a very different video to the one I watched. The BA pilot was very calm, professional and precise throughout. I would like to see how you would respond if someone said you might be sitting on a bomb. Very stupid remarks David Pruitt whoever and whatever you may be.
