I NEED that Curious King version of A Blade Itself! I've been a huge fan of that series since 2008 when I found it just after finishing the first three Game of Thrones books. Martin ruined me on regular fantasy and Abercrombie made sure I never went back! I still cant decide which I like better. Ive read them both several times. So many series! Some great popular picks and less common ones, too. Thanks for the quality video, Petrik. I've only read the first books in about 50 series, so I have fewer to pick from, but here are my favorite 15 First Books in Fantasy Series. 15. Homeland by R. A. Salvatore 14. The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart 13. Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse 12. The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison 11. Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett 10. Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding 09. The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams 08. The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu 07. Jade City by Fonda Lee 06. The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne 05. Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames 04. Mistborn The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson 03. The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch 02. The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson 01. A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin * Some big names are absent because those first books were just not to my taste, but they are popular for most fantasy readers. Those include The Name of the Wind, The Blade Itself, The Grace of Kings, The Fifth Season, The Poppy War and Malice (I loved the rest of The Faithful and Fallen, just not Malice). I will have to add The Will of the Many, The Dragonbone Chair, Empire of Silence and Blood Song to my TBR if they aren't on there already. Thanks again, Petrik!
Thank you, Ronald! And hey, 50 series is amazing. Thank you for your list, too. I've read everything on your list except Homeland and Goblin Emperor. Really need to get around to those two someday. Especially Salvatore's books. I think you will love The Will of the Many The Dragonbone Chair! :D
@@PetrikLeo I think you would enjoy The Art of Prophecy by Wesley Chu. It's very much like one of those older 90's/00's Chinese wuxia movies, like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Hero, but in book form. Some familiar character types, but an interesting prophecy premise and great setting. Solid first book in the series and I'm reading The Art of Destiny, Book 2 in The War Arts Saga, now.
I am about a third of the book into The Will of the Many and I can definitely already see, why it gets praised so much. Can't wait to see where this goes. In the book and in the series.
So many series but I'm so thankful to you for picking up Memory, Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams. I've always found it the most underrated series and author. You not only inspired me to pick up The Dragonbone Chair again and reread the series. Almost done with book 1. I was waiting for the final book of Last King of Osten Ard to release. Now I'll continue from The Dragonbone Chair and go all the way to the upcoming book. Will join you for the sequel series next year 🫡
The please of reading Dragonbone Chair is all mine. I will certainly read the sequel series next year. I will actually read The Heart of What Was Lost this month! :)
Interesting picks, Petrik. Need to read some of these. For me, the first book of The Wheel of Time (The Eye of the World) will always be my No.1. That series started amazingly and ended fantastically. Yes, it slowed down in the middle but it remains my most favorite fantasy series.
Thank you! I'm in the mid-series portion of The Wheel of Time now. And yeah, it slowed down a LOT for me haha. I will be reading Winter's Heart next month! :)
@@PetrikLeo Don't give up on it, Petrik. The last two books by Jordan show that he was back in form and the three books by Sanderson are amazing too. The last battle is the greatest ending for any fantasy series.

Blood Song was the first one that came to my mind. Glad to see it on here. I've read it three times. Unfortunately haven't been able to get through Tower Lord and Queen of Fire.
I am currently reading Daughter of the Empire and loving it! I purchased the second book even though I am still reading the first. It’s definitely not perfect, but it’s extremely engaging.
So excited to read "The Lies of Locke Lamora" as I listened to the prologue this year. I have to mention "Black Sun" by Rebecca Roanhorse. Just that first chapter, so dark and raw! I also loved "The Fifth Season" even in translation. I'm looking forward to re-read it in the original. Thank you for all the recommendations and I hope more people will pick up "The Dandelion Dynasty".
Its good but I read it just after first three Game of Thrones books, the First Law Trilogy, and Best Served Cold so it paled in comparison. I actually liked the 2nd book more. I should re-read it since I never finished the trilogy. I would probably like it more than the first time.
Blood Song is amazing! The first two books in the series I devoured. I have been struggling to finish the final book though. I've been reading it for a year and stuck at 86%.
Dnf grace of kings karena kayak baca buku rangkuman sejarah. Tapi setelah denger kalo buku pertama berlaku sbg prolog mungkin bakal lanjut baca. Makasih loh udah nambah-nambahin list😒
Great list Petrik! Just subscribed to you after watching several of your videos. Red Rising and Blood Song made me a SFF reader. I even stopped reading Romance, and YA fantasy bc they are just so tropey and predictable to me now. I want more. I've read 8 on your list and own another 3. Your review of The Will of the Many had me at Red Rising XD and is one of my most anticipated reads for this year, as is Empire of Silence (which I will buddy read next week). I adored the HELL out of Blood Song, was confused 75% into Tower Lord, and didn't read Queen of Fire. Went back and reread BS and TL (had to hunkerdown and figure out the timeline of each POV), and finally read Queen of Fire and found I loved them all (I need more Frentis). I also did not like Mistborn when I first read it, could not get invested in the characters. Read it again, still did not like it. Read it a third time (still meh) but continued on and glad I did. The 2nd and 3rd books are so much better. I will be reading more of Sanderson Cosmere universe. Thanks for your excellent review. You and Daniel Greene are my trusted book tubers.
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate that. Hearing that I together with Daniel Greene are your trusted booktubers means a great deal to me. I hope you will love Empire of Silence, as for Raven's Shadow trilogy... Unfortunately, I can't recommend you to push through. Queen of Fire is one of the worst books I've ever read. I can't believe Blood Song could lead to that. :')
I've heard this too about QoF, but I read it anyway, I just love the world and characters too much. I have a feeling Anthony Ryan may have been rushed to finish the series and got caught up in the publishing wheel and dragged down. It took him 6 yrs to write BS and far less to write TL and QOF. But as you say, reading is subjective. I still enjoyed it. @@PetrikLeo
Free the Darkness is a really fun first book and the whole series is over the top fun. Seven Blades in Black is an absolute favorite. A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, The Prodigal Son, The Grey Bastards, Blood of an Exile, and Of Sea and Shadow are among my favorites too. Soon Black Tongue Thief will ba a favorite first when the prequel is released 🤪 Jade and Dandelion are brilliant.
Good to know! I've read The Grey Bastards, Blood of an Exile, The Blacktongue Thief and they're all really good. I need to get around to reading Free the Darkness. I'm waiting for my special edition of it to arrive haha

Take care book lover.👍
Just got my hands on Malice and can't wait to start it! Curious, have you ever read the Dragonlance series and if so, what were your thoughts? I don't hear much about it and I adore the series.
Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett should be on the list. it sets up the world, characters and ever-rising stakes, madness and mayhem of the series fantastically.
Controversial hot take: Gardens of the Moon is a fantastic first book...on the second read once you understand enough of the proper nouns to know what's going on.
Thank you! I'm going to copy my answer to another question on this. 😆 "Assassin's Apprentice? I love the entire series, and it's great, but Assassin's Apprentice is a far cry from all the great first books in the series. Ship of Magic, Fool's Errand, and Fool's Assassin are all multiply better than Assassin's Apprentice." Imo anyway! 😁
I actually started reading Jade City last night for the first time, and when Petrik said "...and some hateful characters like Bero..." and the greatest "WHAT?!?! The dude from the first chapters?!?!" came out of me XD. Now I need to see where that dude does + says more carefully 👀
Ever tried Wings Of Fire? Advertised as a 'kid's book', definitely not. Super interesting perspective change in showing humans as the 'animals' instead of dragons as the way it's normally told.
Thanks for keeping readers invested and also slightly jealous of you. 😅 No Farseer in this list? 🤔 Also, do stand up once in every video so we too can appreciate all the great thematic Tshirts you keep wearing! 😏
Thank you! As I said in another comment, Assassin Apprentice is great but not to the point of being the best. Ship of Magic, Fool's Errand, and Fool's Assassin are all superior.
I completely disagree, of course. But this is literally the first opinion stating this on the series that I heard haha. Usually people absolutely disliked Grace of Kings. Just goes to show there's a book for everyone :)

@@PetrikLeo
So many great books on your list. Jade City! Name of the Wind! The Game of Thrones! The Way of Kings! Some of my favorite books
Thank you so much! They are some of the best series starter! 😊
Great list✨
Thanks! 😊
Free the Darkness is a really fun first book and the whole series is over the top fun.
Seven Blades in Black is an absolute favorite.
A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, The Prodigal Son, The Grey Bastards, Blood of an Exile,
and Of Sea and Shadow are among my favorites too.
Soon Black Tongue Thief will ba a favorite first when the prequel is released 🤪
Jade and Dandelion are brilliant.
Good to know! I've read The Grey Bastards, Blood of an Exile, The Blacktongue Thief and they're all really good. I need to get around to reading Free the Darkness. I'm waiting for my special edition of it to arrive haha
@@PetrikLeo jealous 🤓
Great list!! I hope u find more great books in 2024!! 🎉🎉
Thank you so much, Safina!!
New sub! Just started reading fantasy, was just a manga-head before like you lol. I gotta say though, it's gunna be tough for me to find something I like more than Monster or Death Note
Thank you so much! Monster and Death Note are both amazing. But never give up. You might find fantasy novels as good or even better! 😁
For something just as incredible, and somehow even more underrated and completely different, I love Tad Williams' Otherland series.
Argh I have to read that series too after Osten ard!
Keep up the good work Petrik! Name of the Wind is a book I’ve been holding back on, giving the state of the series. Maybe I should bite the bullet and just read it already!!
Thank you very much! Haha, imo, might as well read it not and see how you feel about it. Not like the third book is coming anytime soon anyway. 😂
Chefs kiss* i loooved this video!! You are so right!! Im intrested in the dragonbone chair😮. Unpopular opinion: i think eragon, stormdancer (from the lotus war) vampire hunter d and harry potter wouldv been nice🤔. I still liked the vid. Lotus war is a steampunk, japanese trilogy. Take care book lover.👍
Thank you!! I think many would agree with you that Eragon is amazing! :)
Just got my hands on Malice and can't wait to start it! Curious, have you ever read the Dragonlance series and if so, what were your thoughts? I don't hear much about it and I adore the series.
Woohoo! I hope you will enjoy Malice. I haven't read Dragonlance, though! I'm behind on several important classics!
Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett should be on the list. it sets up the world, characters and ever-rising stakes, madness and mayhem of the series fantastically.
Great book! I was so close to including City of Stairs more though!
I have a vid ideea Petrik.Best sequel books to a series.The great hunt,Words of Radiance etc. 😊
Ohhh interesting. Best sequel mighe be trickier, but I'll try it next year!
@@PetrikLeo Can't wait man 🙏
Hi Petrik. It's a really great list🤓
Thank you, Samuli!!
Controversial hot take: Gardens of the Moon is a fantastic first book...on the second read once you understand enough of the proper nouns to know what's going on.
I totally get it. I reread GotM after I finished Crippled God, felt like reading a completely new book. So good!
One that many people sleep on is Dawn of Wonder. Book 2 isn’t out yet but it is a series.
Yeah I was waiting for book 2 before reading Dawn, but I might just read it next year. 😅
If you like Military science-fi I love Terms of Enlistment by Marko Kloos. If you like serious urban fantasy I love Fated by Benedict Jacka
Benedict Jacka is definitely a must try for me. I haven't heard of Marko Kloos books though!
Petrik tell yall were to start!
Heck yeah!!
I was waiting for Red Rising to show up on the list, but it never did.
Great list, regardless.
Hard choice but Empire of Silence is a better first book imo!
@PetrikLeo and that's one I still have yet to read, so I'll take your word for it 😅
Not fantasy but leviathan wakes is one of my favorite books
Expanse is great!!
Great list but what about Assassin’s Appearance? I love that book
Thank you! I'm going to copy my answer to another question on this. 😆
"Assassin's Apprentice? I love the entire series, and it's great, but Assassin's Apprentice is a far cry from all the great first books in the series. Ship of Magic, Fool's Errand, and Fool's Assassin are all multiply better than Assassin's Apprentice."
Imo anyway! 😁
I should read Malice by John Gwynne. Thank you.
Oh yes you should. Truth and Courage!!
Petrik, why do you have TWO Wraithmarked Sword of Kaigen ??
The top of edges of one is incredibly damaged, so they sent a replacement. 🙂
If like daughter of the empire you should check out Feist’s Rides a Dread Legion it made me buy all his books!
Really? Interesting... I shall look into it. Magician did not really impress me. 😅
@@PetrikLeo yea it’s a bit outdated but Rides a Dread Legion is written much later on. Lots of demon hordes and great characters
The opening of the Way of Kings is the best opening I ever read!
Oh totally true. The prologue and opening is epic!
I actually started reading Jade City last night for the first time, and when Petrik said "...and some hateful characters like Bero..." and the greatest "WHAT?!?! The dude from the first chapters?!?!" came out of me XD. Now I need to see where that dude does + says more carefully 👀
Oh believe me you're going to hate the slimy bastard. 😂😂😂
@@PetrikLeo LOL 🤣🤣🤣
I did not know bloodsong was originally self-published!
It was!! Ace books and Orbit books picked it up because it did so well!
Ever tried Wings Of Fire? Advertised as a 'kid's book', definitely not. Super interesting perspective change in showing humans as the 'animals' instead of dragons as the way it's normally told.
Nope! This is the first time I heard of this series! :)
@@PetrikLeo Ah okay! I definitely recommend it then as a future read! It's by Tui T. Sutherland and she writes quite wonderfully.
Thanks for keeping readers invested and also slightly jealous of you. 😅
No Farseer in this list? 🤔
Also, do stand up once in every video so we too can appreciate all the great thematic Tshirts you keep wearing! 😏
Thank you! As I said in another comment, Assassin Apprentice is great but not to the point of being the best. Ship of Magic, Fool's Errand, and Fool's Assassin are all superior.
Unfortunately the writing style of Grace of Kings has put me off continuing. Some day I might continue but it dropped a long way down the list
I totally understand that. Just remember if you do get back to it, the rest of the series is written differently.
You mentioning that is the main thing that kept it on my list
This edition of mistborn look so small and cute 😅
Haha it's mass market paperback! A precious one! :)
No The Darkness That Comes Before?
I will be reading that for the first time this year. Just got the books! :)
@@PetrikLeo very nice, its absolutely amazing
I'm going to write a fantasy series just so you read it 😀
Go go go!!!
Petrik needs to take responsibility for the fact that my tbr is now 40 books long.
Hahaha 😂😂 That's still a relatively low number. I have more than 900 books in my TBR!
Loved The Grace of Kings. But, every book after got worse until I dnf'd book 4.
I completely disagree, of course. But this is literally the first opinion stating this on the series that I heard haha. Usually people absolutely disliked Grace of Kings. Just goes to show there's a book for everyone :)
I hate this guy, he’s always so positive and charming. He seems like a nice person who enjoys what he does and his community. It’s awful.
I don't know what to say. Thank you? :D
Your reading 225 series seems a waste Petrik if Realm of the Elderlings is not on your list!😂
Assassin's Apprentice? I love the entire series, and it's great, but Assassin's Apprentice is a far cry from all the great books in the series. Ship of Magic, Fool's Errand, and Fool's Assassin are all multiply better than Assassin's Apprentice.
Man you are going all over and over and over the same books again. Start reading new books maybe?
What? 😅 Maybe unsubscribe or don't watch my videos if you think I don't read new books. I read at least more than 60 new books every year. It's what i do most of the time. This is a list of my updated top first books. I can't help if my rankings don't change sometimes.
When I talk about the best and most disappointing books of the year later this month, it will all be for news reads this year. Besides, in this video, The Will of the Many, Dragonbone Chair, Empire of Silence, are all new books I read this year.
