It is no accident that he turned out to be a psycho. His mum highly contributed to it. She has chained him to herself as a result of her terrible life experiences. She has become dominating and abused him emotionally, eventhough she loved him so much. She didn't know how to love her son because she has never experienced 'a healthy relationships in her life. She has developed a Sick way of love towards him. Norman really was her reflection. He held up a mirror but she didn't want to face the truth. Norman was her victim. He could have been such a great guy without the traumas his mum put on him even if unwillingly. She herself should have been treated psychologically a long time ago so that norman could have been saved and could have developed into a normal teenage boy. Great film. Amazing actors and actresses. Norma and norman would have deserved every award for their performance. Absolutely genuine. Two amazing talents.

To those asking why that was the moment Norma decided to share her last trauma with her son (all inappropriate imo) it was pretty much a calculated move, whether she was conscious of it or not. Her son was off to the dances with a woman who wasn’t her what better time to drop this bomb so even during the moments Norman was away from his mother all he could think/obsess about and be anchored to is Norma. It’s sick but that was the beauty of Bates Motel. Peak narcissistic manipulation.

She told him now because she thought someone had threatened to kill her and she wasn't sure if that would still happen. That's why she says she wants someone to know the truth about her (she's talking like she's going to die)

This makes me appreciate forcing myself out of an abusive relationship and learning how to make a dysfunctional family work for my children.... Been single for three years and I'm so proud of myself, because these situations create a depedency issue that seems impossible to get out of... Keeping on that path only leads to worse relationships and further destruction... It takes time to heal, and a long time at that. GIVE YOURSELF TIME.
By the way, for anyone asking why she'd tell him at a time like this, it's a classic paranoid schizophrenic move (from someone who lives with a paranoid schizophrenic). When flashbacks come in, you almost have to get it out or you explode. She's gone through enough and has enough symptoms and situations to almost fit the criteria.

I liked Norma and was sad when she died but she’s the main reason Norman went insane and couldn’t get the help she’s the cause of all the innocents lives he took as Mother since he really didn’t have a clue what he’s split personality was doing she knew all along and downplayed it and ended up costing her and everyone else their lives I was so sad about Romero but he was pretty stupid at the end turning his back from Norman too only if she trusted people and let Norman get the help wouldn’t be in this situation that’s the reason why Dylan left he knew Norman wasn’t well and wanted to help him but Norma wasn’t having it very good series and loved every second of it but just so sad how these things could have been avoided to some extent

Norma had so much bottled up trauma from her past trauma that she couldn’t face she ended up putting it all on Norman and didn’t want him to find any sort of love from anyone say it a partner or a friend she was fearing being lonely so she didn’t want him to branch out due to fears of being alone this is what Dylan brought up multiple times then when she dated Romero she was having her own life but then Norman/mother was turning into her and didn’t want Norma having her own life it was such a twisted relationship but the way she’s neglected not only him but his mental health issues as per say the blackouts not telling him or getting him help then throwing her childhood issues onto him she’s the main reason why he turned out like this not like Mother is Norman’s fault because it isn’t but Norma really neglected his split personality issues and Romero tried helping so did Dylan if she let them help he wouldn’t have gone as far as he did

To me the whole series is about Norma, a psychologically disturbed, victim type of narcissistic person turning his son into a psychopath...... Basically with every action she does. So sad that no one around them have realized this. They all thought Norma was perfect. Of course, the same thing had happened to Norma, her parents had done the same to her and her bro. A real tragedy, two tragic fates. They could have become great people if it hadn't been for their parents......

  • @Kid_Charlemagne76

Norma wasn't being completely honest here. As gross and twisted as it was, things between her and her brother were consensual. He did force himself on her when she tried to end it but before that, it was all consensual. This was another way for her to act more victimized and play on Norman's sympathy

You’re kinda right but, he was 4 years older than her so it’s easy to manipulate her into thinking it was right. I was abused by my 4 years older cousin and I didn’t understand it was wrong at the time, it felt wrong but I trusted him so it’s not until I grew up and realized what sex was that I knew it was wrong and that I didn’t want that to happened.

Maybe it was manipulative but her behavior is understandable considering what she went through.
A lot of moms are like this about letting go of their children. It isn't easy to let go of someone.
So much behavior like this is pretty common and it feels like more people are in condemnation of it rather than trying to look through the lens of the sufferer.
And Norma did not screw up Norman. Norman held himself together well despite everything. But his incident in childhood already did significant damage and was a bigger source of his rage.
I sincerely hope people won't get a self righteous attitude about people doing 'bad' things like being manipulative. It serves no one and is far from being helpful or healing.
Edit: Also, Norma always felt as if she was protecting Norman because of his rage and she was the one who knew of what really happened to his father. Don't forget that.

She probably thought she’ll tell him about her past at that precise moment so he’ll feel sorry for her and love her more because she currently feels insecure since he’s about to go on a date with his girlfriend. It’s her psychotic way to hold on to his feelings. It will put him off and only think about her all through out the night. That’s her way to manipulate and hold on to her son. It was so mess up.
