Dylan was conceived under unfortunate circumstances and he managed to be the most sane in his family. No matter how hard he tried, he could not save his little brother. Love this show.

Yeah I agree. It really hit home. Compare that with his character’s attitude in season one. He wasn’t really the hard ass he was pretending to be. He was just as emotionally injured as the other family members and putting on his best front.

This was the best ending Norman could have had, at least this way he is not suffering by battling with himself anymore. Mother finally left Norman alone for good at the beginning of the finale and stopped causing him to black out, but Norman's dependence on Norma remained and he couldn't function without semblance of her, and it was painful to watch him "reset" and pretend it was the first day they'd moved to White Pine Bay.

You missed the whole point of this scene. He didn’t want to kill Dylan, he did that because he wanted to be with his mother. He even said this is how it has to end. And if you look he stabs the door. He wasn’t aiming for Dylan. He did that because it was the only way he knew Dylan would shoot him. That’s why he says “Thank you” when he’s in his arms.

Norman wasn't trying to kill Dylan. He wanted to be with Norma. He was trying to get Dylan into killing him (and running toward him with a knife was the only way Dylan would do it) because that's the only way Norman could be with Norma again. That's why he aimed at the door instead of at Dyl, and why he said 'thank you' at the end

The ending was so touching, sad, and beautiful seeing him running into her arms. Norman finally reunited with his mother who waited for him in Heaven - his REAL mother that we knew and loved from Season 1-4, and not the psychotic mother in his mind. The show ended beautifully. as someone who lost their mom who was their only parent and other half at 18, the grief and denial from it can take you into some very, very dark and scary places. especially when it’s an unbelievably unhealthy and co-dependent relationship, like mine was as well. living in a world without them seems impossible and almost as though it breaks the very rules of the universe itself. of course no one is advocating for keeping bodies of loved ones in their home but i would be lying if i said i didn’t understand his desperate want to want to stay in the world they had together, even if it’s not real to anyone else. facing the truth of it all feels like looking into the sun, it’s just too much all at once and too overwhelming. you have to look away at some point. seeing him run towards her is something i think about every single day. will i get to see her again? how long do i have to wait? will it be like the movies? will she look the same as she did when she left and know who i am? will she walk with me to the other side, together? god this just breaks my heart man.

Was I the only one who, until this episode, didn't lose hope that Norman would have a good ending, after all? Ever knowing he didn't deserve it, I wanted him to... You know, go to Pineview or something. But in the end, there wasn't any other option. His death was a happy ending, in a way. But if you think enough, this show has no happy ending.
Romero is dead, Norma and Norman are dead. No one ever found Bradley body. Emma lost his mother. Everything leads to a Depressive end, and even if Dylan and Emma are together, he lost his brother. He lost his mother, and he lost Caleb. He's still married to Emma, but he lost everyone. Everyone he loved or cared, and in the end, all due to his psycho brother.
And it becomes even sadder if you think that Norman didn't want to do any of this...

i found the ending to be beautifully tragic. it’s very rare and raw when Male characters in tv shows let their emotions pour out and that’s when the best acting is provided. i’d like to say that a mother and sons relationship is one of the toughest relationships to explain maybe just like a father and daughter too.
it seemed that norma was being a protective mother and slowly throughout the show we think that norma is controlling Norman and not letting him live his best life; especially regarding girls. the truth is is that norma was trying to protect her son from hurting anybody else but instead of locking him away she’d rather he just got ‘help’ but as most mental health cases; the longer a person is stuck with their own thoughts and demons the sooner you realise their insanity goes beyond help.
the ending was really sad, the bit that got me was when dylan said “I don’t know what I want for you norman I guess I want you to be happy and well” dylan knew the only way for Norman to be happy was to be with his protecter and the one person who ever truly loved him most; mother.

It could be suggested that Norma "protecting" Norman was selfish/for her own benefit

I think when you turn a horror movie into a horror series you inevitably turn it into a tragedy.
You can spend hours upon hours with characters and not bond with them. And when your film knowledge gives you a blue print of what to expect going forward, it gives the happy moments and air of sadness.

I remember a similar story like that happened, there was a Daughter who went out and got killed I think she got stabbed, and her Mother killed herself so they can be together, it's so horrible what grief can do

God Dylans voice out of frustration and total hurt and sadness saying “ I DONT KNOW WHAT I WANT OK” i want for you you to be happy” “I want you be well. “ i want all of these things to have never happened”. Jesus Christ that line everytime i hear it breaks my heart and it sends chills down my arms and upper spine because those words along with holding his brother saying crying thats he sorry after losing his brother is exactly as i feel in my life with those people who have come and go in my life and hurt me betrayed my trust and love 😔 Dylan didnt wanna kill his brother its like how you dont want to lose the person who is in your life you can keep speaking the truth but one ear goes out the other and they dont take accountability for there selfish act and give you no choice but to let go 😔

here they portrayed Norman as a psycho killer but in the movies and the novels his split personality is explained much better and is revealed that he suffers from schizophrenia a mental disease which is the reason why he killed innocent people without remembering what he did earlier. Here he killed his mother because he wanted to stay forever with her and she starts to notice her son's insanity but she couldn't save herself from her son while in the movies he killed her along her lover poisoning both with tea or coffee I don't remember and here it seems that Norma was more maternal and loving towards her son while in the movies was possessive, manipulative and was crazy later it's revealed that she suffered from schizophrenia as well and her illness passed through her son when she was pregnant, for that reason Norman didn't want his wife to have a baby in the last Psycho film because he was afraid that his son will have his same illness and didn't want his son to suffer his same fate. The love of his wife eventually cured Norman's condition and finally could have a normal life.

Dylan's heartbroken glance when he saw that Norman was stabbing the door, clearly baiting Dylan to shoot him and I doubt was planning on actually killing him is such a good detail.

"Stop what Dylan?" Since that phrase, he knew he was what he was, and knew Dylan was the one to take him out.

You can tell Norman came-to as much as possible in the kitchen. When he says, “I just want to be with her,” inside he realizes he can never be with Norma now anywhere but the afterlife.
Obviously everyone caught that he stabbed too high on purpose but the most satisfying confirmation that we get the old Norman back in that last minute is after he says that phrase.
Dylan says, “Don’t ask me to do that,” because Dylan can see the real Norman pleading for release through his glassy eyes. Norman then, so subtly but really does, pause and then nod in response just before he looks down and lunges.
This scene is the peak of an emotionally charged mountain built over the 5 seasons. It is a masterpiece of a scene to conclude a masterpiece of a show.

And Max Theriot and Freddie Highmore each wound up moving on to great shows after this ended. Freddie portraying an autistic doctor and Max portraying SEAL team member. Terrific range from both guys.
