I like how counselor encouraged the client to reframe the way he perceived his needs. Not only was the need for freedom, the reason the client sought counseling, but the other needs were briefly addressed as well. The counselor was able to help the client weigh the good with the bad in terms of present and future. I think the reframing technique was effective in helping the client to view his perceptions differently and helping the client to make smarter, more profitable decisions.

In this situation, the second plan suggested that he stick to parents' rules in the hope that the curfew will change. In such cases like this there may be times where the need may not be met. And for some people it's difficult to see beyond that. I probably would have suggested calming techniques to have when he becomes frustrated when he hears about an event happening and he really wants to go.

The counselor does great at reflection of feelings and paraphrasing. He went in depth with the client on his issues of belonging and power, and explored the clients feelings towards his situation. The counselor did a great job also at getting the client to see what would happen in the future concerning his survival needs based on the choices he wants to make.

I was able to see how the counselor reflected on the client's feelings and thinking to help the client explore his options. An emphasis was placed on responsibility and consequences of choosing certain behaviors in the present and future. I think looking into the future was helpful for the client to gain insight in satisfying his needs and put things into perspective.

Interesting. I see this as a reality theory because of the practicality, the here and now, the consideration of the future... but I am not sure the client is mature enough to put this plan into motion. Hopefully the client would take the reframing of the issue and results to heart and consider his situation as temporary.

The counselor and client discussed how his balance of needs would be managed in the present vs. in the future. The client discussed actions he wants to currently take to satisfy his needs and possible consequences. The counselor also helped the client see how his choices can effect him five years into the future with the ability to balance needs. I think looking into the future is beneficial for clients gaining insight into their current choices. However, I did not like that the counselor and client agreed that the client would continue following rules. It seems that the client has been following his parents' rules, but it was not helpful for the client. The client also previously tried to get his parents to soften up, but this did not work. I think that alternative goals could have been more beneficial.

Did a reaction video. I am really curious about your process with clinical evaluations and how this exchange might've changed over the years or then vs. now? Thank you Dr.

In this session the client is struggling with personal freedom while going to college. College is a time where most people experience freedom and learn knew things and the client feels he is being held back from this. The counselor shows understanding but brings the client back to reality when they discuss the impact going against his parents rules versus following them. After the client thought about both situations he came to realize that even those his current situation was robbing him of personal freedom, it was allowing him a brighter more enjoyable future.

When Glasser talks about the need for FUN, he is not referring to having fun at a party, he is referring to having fun, enjoying learning. Enjoy Learn

I personally don't like when therapists/psychologists talk about the theories they're using. The patient doesn't care. That's not why they're with you.
It's your job as a therapist to use whatever modality in the background without interfering in their life. It's hard to do for the psych, but allows more mental effort for the patient to solve their own problems.
I dont' know why they need to be encumbered with a psychological theory.

Oh no, you have it wrong dear. It is very crucial for the therapist to even get the permission of the client before using certain techniques. It is like going to a doctor. The doctor should discuss any medication prescribed and checked for allergies or preferences etc.
