    Someone once tried in the night but crashed at Masta left/right. Lots of people usually does but better having friends checking on the cops. I did a walk around and some randoms rallyes happen anytime as they open les combes and le raccordement. High speeds are naturally forbidden unless security can be guaranteed.(never happens) Ask Jacky Stewart his word about old layout.

      That is why it's called road racing. They were literally racing on the public roads until the 1970s in much of Europe. LeMans is still public roads for much of the lap. Mulsanne is a public road for 50 weeks of the year.

      MAX Percentage Not possible. Spa is a public road which is used by heavy vehicles which create ruts and is flanked by trees, earth banks, small cliffs and houses. It was antiquated in the 60s and there is simply no possibility of reinstating it for contemporary motorsport. Two drivers, Chris Bristow and Alan Stacey, were killed at the 1960 Grand Prix. Even touring car races were extremely dangerous at Spa. Three drivers were killed in the 1973 24 hour race, including Massimo Larini, uncle of Nicola Larini. The circuit is so long that it can be dry on one side and wet on the other. This happens more often than you might think. That was bad enough in the 1960s but would be unthinkable now.

      Invocatione Edo Tensei The circuit is no longer complete. There’s a bit missing at Malmedy and another at Stavelot (the real one, not the current one, which is actually a lot closer to La Source). They are not insignificant sections of track. If you have a look at Google Maps you can probably see for yourself. A road race would be impossible because the track hasn’t been maintained for 45 years anyway. A rally would probably work though. The problem with Spa has always been the speeds and the possibility of rain on one side of the circuit. Stewart was very clear about this back in the 1970s.
      Jimmy Broadbent did a lap in a modern F1 around the 1966 track (Assetto Corsa?) and found it was virtually flat out for the entire lap. From memory, he only braked at Haute de la Cote and La Source. That sort of thing doesn’t make for interesting circuit racing.

    • @BrettHart27
      @BrettHart27 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To further on from 'The Third Man's most valid comments...
      Even if the original circuit was complete, the liable aspects of staging even a 'rallying' event at the original Spa would be colossal.
      Imagine the audience an event on the full circuit would generate. Now imagine one or more of those modern machines coming off at 220, 240 mph (400 kmh) and repeating the tragedy of Le Mans 1955 through the crowd. Motor racing of all kind would likely be outlawed, worldwide, in a proverbial heart beat.
      Coincidently, the commentator of this video's grand nephew's tragic and idiotic death (Jules) very nearly was the death knell for the now overly safe Formula One, such was the outcry of the danger of car racing at the very echelons.

      F1 cars in the late sixties were capable of 180-190 mph, geared for Spa. They had no aero, no downforce at all until 68/ 69 and ran on hard treaded tyres. At this circuit, it was all about steering on the throttle, little dabs or pushes of the brakes on the way in, little lifts of the throttle to allow the car to oversteer and turn in, then feeding the power back in to get the rear back under control with all four wheels drifting at anywhere between 150 and 180 mph. Pretty spectacular. The long straights allowed for slipstreaming and overtaking, and there's something inherently beautiful about race cars running through miles of open countryside, especially to a soundtrack of Ferrari or Matra V12 engines screaming along at the redline. Those old road circuits had character. Spa was notorious for its ability to have pouring rain on parts of the circuit, and be dry on others. Not only that, in some parts of the circuit, you had trees one side of the road, and a forty foot drop the other, houses, brick walls, spectators...you name it. It was hugely dangerous, and drivers were taking their lives in their hands every time they raced there. If you want to get a better idea of what racing was like here, the 1966 film "Grand Prix" will give you a good idea. I'm sure you'll find clips on here. If you imagine that it was just a dull parade of cars going round at full throttle, it was anything but. If you want to get some idea of what it felt like to drive, grab yourself a copy of Grand Prix Legends, then download the Spa 67 circuit, which is the most accurate rendition of the old Spa in a sim. It's quite a ride. 😊

    The lap record of the old triangle-shaped track is 3 minutes and 13.4 seconds, held by the French driver Henri Pescarolo, driving a Matra at the 1973 Spa 1000 km World Sportscar Championship race at an average speed of 262 kilometres per hour (163 mph). Many drivers lost their lives at the old track, in all sorts of motorsports categories (notably a lot during the Spa 24 hours race), it was a wise decision it got revamped, because the old track simply had become way too dangerous for fast modern racing.
