  • For Catholics May is the month of special devotion to Our Lady. We can't come together in the church this year, but perhaps we could bring back the tradition of a May altar at home? In this video Fr Damian explains more about May altars, sets up one in the parochial house and talks about the scriptural foundation for doing so. May God bless us and Our Lady protect us this May.

    The hymn to Our Lady brought back floods of memories of my childhood back home in England, when we used to sing it at church.
    I’d forgotten it but remembered all the beautiful words. Thank you!

    Thank you for the lovely video, Father. I am about to make a May Altar for my home in the way we did as school children every year. Instead of a shoe box I'm using a decorative storage box and I bought pretty stickers and paper to decorate the inside of the box as a backdrop. I'm neither artsy nor crafty at all, so I can't guarantee the results. I still have to find a small floral wreath to crown the beautiful Blessed Mother statue. The statute belonged to my late mother, God rest her soul. Anne Noonan Gannon.

    Hi your video appeared in my TH-cam suggested videos. I was really surprised to see the statue that you used is actually the same as one I bought in Rome in January at I think basilica di san giovanni in Laterano. 😊 I’m also from Northern Ireland but have lived in England for many years.

    Thank you for this. During the 2020 isolation, we made a May altar and did not want to take it down in June. We kept it up for months. Today we will make one for this year, though it it has been so cold, the violets, usually our first flowers for the altar, have not yet bloomed. Again, this is wonderful. Thank you.

    I am so taken by the story of the Lady of Revelation. I have never seen a statue of her. I had to click on the edit because I forgot to send extra virtual blessings to you father. I am happy to share some of my graces with you if through our Blessed Mother. Blessings to all through our Lady; Our Mother...

    Excellent video.
    Thank you, father.
    1. Bring flowers of the rarest
    bring blossoms the fairest,
    from garden and woodland and hillside and dale;
    our full hearts are swelling,
    our glad voices telling
    the praise of the loveliest flower of the vale!
    refrain: O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,
    Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May,
    O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,
    Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May.
    2. Our voices ascending,
    In harmony blending,
    Oh! Thus may our hearts turn
    Dear Mother, to thee;
    Oh! Thus shall we prove thee
    How truly we love thee,
    How dark without Mary
    Life's journey would be.
    refrain
    3. O Virgin most tender,
    Our homage we render,
    Thy love and protection,
    Sweet Mother, to win;
    In danger defend us,
    In sorrow befriend us,
    And shield our hearts
    From contagion and sin.
    refrain
    4. Of Mothers the dearest,
    Oh, wilt thou be nearest,
    When life with temptation
    Is darkly replete?
    Forsake us, O never!
    Our hearts be they ever
    As Pure as the lilies
    We lay at thy feet.
    refrain

    Hi,
    I have a question about home altars.
    Di you have to have items used at home blessed? Like the candle?
    Thanks,

    So I am Roman Catholic Christian, I know that Christ in the Eucharist is the Priest, Victim, and the Altar.
    Why is it necessary to have an Altar in our homes to pray? I legitimately ask because we have statues and images around our home ONLY to remind us of these Saints, Holy women and men, and Jesus who died for us. All of these are not things we're worshipping to. Rather these place in our physical sights so that we can focus spiritually to pray to the One True God, giving praise to God the Father, God the Son, with God the Holy Spirit who resides in our hearts.
    How does building a home altar for Christianity help us further in our praying? This MAY become a distraction of what we should be doing since it is not an altar at the Mass. Also, hiw does the Tradition of our Faith view the Church Altar and the Home Altar. Are they functionally spiritually or symbolic? Thank you for your time.

    • @ballymoneyparish2820
      @ballymoneyparish2820  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi Michael. It's not necessary to have an altar in our home to pray, it's just a nice tradition - especially for the month of May in honour of Our Lady. And it's not an altar in the sense of the altar in a church because Mass is not said there. It's just a special place of prayer (you could also call it a home shrine or sacred space if you prefer).
      As you say, we Catholics use statues and images to help us to worship God and honour his saints. By having these images at home it reminds us to pray every day and not just when we go to Mass. The Church has special blessings for these items to encourage us to use them and it teaches that families at home are the 'domestic church'.

    Love how you guy's have elevated Mary into a co redeemer with jc quick question since the church teaches that Mary herself had to be conceived miraculously in order to give birth to Jesus then logically so would her entire lineage lol

    • @ballymoneyparish2820
      @ballymoneyparish2820  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think you've quite understood the Catholic teaching on Mary! Have a look at the Catechism of the Catholic Church 490-493 which discusses Mary's Immaculate Conception. 492 in particular answers your point because it teaches Mary's conception as a unique blessing given to her alone "by reasons of the merits of her Son."
      As for us 'elevating' Mary? We're just being faithful to Luke 1:48! And for that reason I hope you too call her blessed!!

    Isaiah55:6&7,"Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near.Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts.Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon."
    Repent, receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior today.This is God's invitation for redemption, Jesus loves you so much and he is the only WAY to eternity.God bless you
