  • Hobby Boss 1/72 Scale Model F-14A Tomcat by The Inner Nerd
    Instructional time lapse video of the full build, painting and weathering of the 1/72 scale F-14A Tomcat by Hobby Boss as shown by The Inner Nerd
    The first part of this video shows the use of Photo Etched parts and scratch building techniques to detail hydraulic pipes and electrical cables professionally and cheaply around both the cockpit and wheel bays. Locitite 406 CA superglue is used in this process combined with CA superglue accelerator/activator to join the two dissimilar materials
    The second part shows surface preparation techniques such as filling panel gaps and seams with Deluxe Materials Perfect Plastic Putty modelling filler/putty and sanding them smooth to get a seamless join between parts using a range of sand papers from 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000p dpi grit papers.
    Also Black Basing techniques are included in this section using Mr Hobby "Mr Surfacer 1000, 1200 & 1500 Finishing Surfacer" thinned with cellulose lacquer thinners to prime the surface ready for painting, sprayed through an airbrush using Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo Needle/Nozzle: 0.15mm with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar).
    The third part of the video demonstrates the BLACK-BASING technique used to achieve a pre-weathered look and surface texture replicating that of an aged and worn aircraft. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar).
    Also included in this section is the Engine Exhaust painting using Alclad 2 Lacquers (Airframe Aluminium, Aluminium, Steel, Jet Exhaust, Copper & Pale Burnt Metal) and Tamiya clear paints to create a burnt metal effect.
    3 layers of Tamiya X-22 Ts-13 clear gloss seal the decals in. This can be decanted and sprayed through an airbrush such as the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo or sprayed directly from the aerosol spray rattle can.
    Decals follow painting with the aid of Mr Hobby Mr Mark Setter & Softer products. These products allow the decal to form to the shapes and panel lines of the surface which you can see in the video.
    Next is the weathering of the model. This is started using Abteilung 502 & Winsor & Newton oil paints thinned with white spirit to a wash consistency. Then used as a panel line wash the oil is applied across the model to achieve a dirty, grimey & worn look. Further weathering including Unthinned Abteilung 502 Oil Paints to create streaking and water marks, along with AK Interactive weathering Pigments (Gun Metal, Russian Earth, Europe Earth, Medium Rust and Pigment Fixer, Worn Effects, Dark Streaking Grime Rainmark Effects) concludes weathering.
    The final part of the video explains the final assembly of small parts including landing gear, lights, antennas and canopy fitment as the model nears completion. All final assembly is completed with Loctite 406 CA superglue.
    Items Used
    Airbrush: Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo Needle/Nozzle: 0.15mm
    Compressor: Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar)
    Paint: Mr Hobby Mr Surfacer 1000, Mr Hobby Mr Surfacer 1200 & Mr Hobby Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 thinned with cellulose lacquer thinner
    Tamiya Acrylics thinned with Tamiya X-20A Thinner
    Mr Hobby Aqueous
    Abteilung 502 Oils - Black / Industrial Earth / Olive Green
    Winsor & Newton Oils - Yellow Ochre / Raw Umber / Burnt Sienna / White
    AK Interactive Pigments - Gun Metal, Europe Earth, Russian Earth, Medium Rust, Pigment Fixer
    Vallejo Masking Fluid
    Winsor & Newton UV Cut Matte Enamel Varnish
    Brushes: Pure Sable Brush - Various Sizes
    Glue: Tamiya Extra Thin Cement
    Tamiya Poly Cement
    Revell Contacta Professional
    Loctite 406 CA Superglue
    Sanding: 3M 600p / 800p / 1200p / 2000p / 3000p sheets & sponges
    Tamiya Polishing Compounds (Course, Fine & Finish)
    Final Part of Hobby Boss's 1/72 Scale F-14A Tomcat
    If I'm honest I am not entirely pleased witht the end result. A few of the new techniques for weathering did not turn out as I imagined they would, further practice is definately required to get them up to the standard I would have liked.
    Luckily though, this is just a hobby so any inaccuracies are not going to get me marked down on the competition table! And I think the end result is not-bad, just not how I would have liked it to turn out, a little too weathered!
    As always thank you for watching :) Please leave a COMMENT, LIKE, SHARE & SUBSCRIBE as more videos are on the way with new items coming to my channel shortly!!
    Thank you

      MightyZocalo Thank you. The panel lines on F-14's are more pronounced than that on other aircraft due to the carrier-bourne nature of their service. Tried some new techniques on this one to get the level of weathering needed. Some if it paid off, others need improvement.

    Hey, I trained on this bird when I was in weapons school for the Marines, and just a little hint, the AIM-9 "Sidewinder's" don't sit on a stand off, they actually slide up on the rail and slide off when fired, so they should sit flush against the rail. Just a little detail to make it even better than it is already. And about the rock salt, while its true the 14's and 18's have a different coating on them since they are in a very harsh salty environment, could you not have used like regular kosher salt and gotten the same effect it just appeared to me, that where the salt was finer and covering better, you got more of the effect to come through...

    The dark panel lines are a bit on the harsh side. Most tomcats had faded and repaired paint, but not quite so prominent panel lines. If you get the chance, please visit a museum where you can see one that has not been repainted for viewing.

    Quality as usual. I must say those that have disliked the video. Could you please show us the kits you've done, as I'm detecting a hint of jealousy here. Was hoping to see the next project be the euro fighter. Word of warning for you though don't do the 1/72 airfix eurofighter. Poor fitting and I found it clunky. Keep the good work up.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Andrew Beech Thank you. I did it for a more weathered look. F-14's are often resprayed by ground crew along highly weathered panel lines like the jet intakes. To do this an darker layer of post shading is needed to then respray the original X-19 colour

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Donnie Greenway Its used as a mask for the base colour. The salt is used as it can be easily removed after painting and also creates a random pattern on the model where the surface has been weathered at different rates, mimicking that of the real aircraft.

    How do you thin your tamiya paints for airbrushing or do you spray them straight from the pot?

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Yorkshire Gamer As soon as I buy a pot I mix X-20A thinner into the pot. I find that if you top-up the pot to the neck line with thinner, it tends to be suitable for airbrushing straight from the pot. Some colours will need more/less but as a general rule it seems to work 👍

    What is the rock salt & water used for when weathering a model? I certainly understand that Navy = saltwater (I worked at a repair depot for 37+ years and saw what saltwater mist & spray does to Naval aircraft on nearly a daily basis, so I'm only partly joking here!), but since I have zero experience weathering scale models, and would like to learn more, I'm hoping that you can point me to a video or similar that gives a detailed answer to that and also could point me to, hopefully, some "weathering of scale models for dummies" videos. I only just discovered your channel (it's now early 16 Jan 2022)!

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The rock salt is used as a temporary mask for the next colour. You'll know more than most that when looking at Navy jets the paint surface is very broken in terms of colour uniformity. To replicate this the base colour of the paint is laid down first, then a lighter version of the same paint is laid over that, using the salt to mask off the first layer. When you wash off the salt the layers are seen as a very rough contrast. This can be left or smoothed with a very thin coat of the base colour again to unify the paint colours together - if needed. I hope this helps and good luck with weathering your models. It all takes practice and experimentation. Thanks for watching :)

    You certainly put some work in with that, I wouldn't use salt weathering unless your going to show a chipping effect between two very different colours. I thin the bright CAG boss colours detract from the weathering, if you'd have used low-vis squadron VF-111 markings I think the end result would have looked much more realistic.

      On this model I used a Sealy Air Products AB933 airbrush with 0.35mm nozzle & needle. Sprayed at 22psi (working pressure) with a paint:thinner mix ratio of around 40:60. Compressor is a Badger 1100 piston type with anti-pulsation tank. Hope this helps!

    @GoldenSlumber474 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    What finish are you striving for using the rock salt?

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary E. Worrall If you look at the surface of an F-14 they are heavily mottled due to weathering from salty air. The salt in this case is used as a paint mask to create random areas of the original tone. A variation of the original colour (XF-20) is used over the salt to get a slightly more yellow-grey as the base is a more blue-grey (XF-19)

    Why you use the Salt? For what exactly?

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The salt is used to create a random splatter of different tones. By using it to mask off the base layer it helps create pockets of speckles that are darker, or lighter, than the colour laid on top of it. Once removed the surface tone is broken up by the two or more colours used in the process. There is a far easier and less messy method which I use in this video which explains the process further if you care to take a look 🙂 th-cam.com/video/mIA1VksDaKc/w-d-xo.html

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello and thanks for watching. So the end cap can cause some spattering and also distort the "landing area" from view when staying up close. It also makes it easier to keep the tip clean from drying that bit easier when spraying fine lines. The airbrush is a Sealy AB9321 I think, something like that anyway 👍

    with dat "502 abteilung" models look unrealistically "dirty" or "dusty"

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OgrabliatorKorovanov It does depend on how much you leave on, it can be wiped completely clean from a gloss surface if that's the way you want it

      @OgrabliatorKorovanov 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok then... It just reminded me of these "boneyards" where thousands of decommissioned planes are stationed. What do you think of making "boneyard" model btw? You know, some rusty partially disassembled mig-21 or phantom... (these abandoned aircrafts look rather sad and cool at the same time, they are like monuments to forgotten history)

      OgrabliatorKorovanov I have considered it before making a worn out abandoned model. I think it would be best as part of a diorama maybe, something for the future I think 🤔

    Nice work. But i have a few critique: its seems that painting with exaggereted weathering. Decal looks clear but surfaces are dirty. I think weathering looks nice just for 1/48 size models.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      enmm Thanks. I think the photographs don't help show the surface well. The pre-shading appears stronger on the images than physically seeing the model in reality. I used new l weathering techniques for me on this model and I think it needs more work

    I can tell this is someone has never seen this bird in RL, three yrs carrier duty in the 80s . . . when this bird occupied the decks. I dodged this bird's "turkey feathers' every day at sea.

      Not everyone in the world has a military background but it doesn't stop is being interested in the subjects of military vehicles. You don't need to have seen them to build them, surely that's the best thing about this hobby right?

      The US Navy isn't (or at least wasn't back in the Tomcat days) quite as pedantic when it comes to repainting everything just because it got a little scuffed or discolored.
      One can quite easily find examples of heavily weathered aircraft.

      Great. So in what way was it the worst? I can't really improve on anything if you don't comment why. Also this is TH-cam, not the modelling competition table so does it really matter? It's not my best by far but I gave it a shot
