    TIP: if someone is using a screen that isn't green/with the tracking markers, then, in the Planar Tracker Inspector, go to the "Options" tab, and redefine the color it should be looking for under the "Color" twirl-down option. Use the eye dropper to select the screen color. Mine was black-ish, and that worked for me because it was default to green and didn't work at first. Thanks!

    Love Casey's videos. I'd love to see a video of tracking an erratically moving object. I have footage where I am trying to blur a logo on a object that moves all directions from a central point, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Trying a power window tracker in the colour tab it tracks good for the first few seconds, then goes all over the place. Even when I set a power window over something larger & more contrasty than the black on red logo & has the same movement, try and track it, then move the window after the tracking is done doesn't work.
    I tried the regular tracker in fusion, and made the search box quite a bit bigger than the pattern box -this worked for about 45 seconds of the one minute video (and took a long time!) then it totally lost the area being tracked.
    So if you're looking for another idea for a video, tracking an erratically moving object would be a good one!

    Great intro. One thing that I have tried (and failed miserable) is to use Fusion to stabilize a clip. Especially in the case when the clip is a pan and no single point is in the view all the time so would seem to need to "stack" multiple trackers to handover to each other. Humble suggestion for a follow-on tutorial?

    • @TerrestrialVibes

      You might want to use a matte for that...like a greenscreen or rotoscope, then you can add different effects to the mask edges and would suit that need.

    I do have an issue and maybe you can just point me to a video. I have a TV in footage that is behind an object (a cymbal) in a shot. I have tried numerous ways to have something display on that TV but when the cymbal moves in front of the TV, it goes under/behind the planar and/or mask. I have this working well in other shots (different camera angle) where the screen of the TV is not obstructed but cannot figure out how to make it work right. Thoughts?

    Thanks for all of your videos.
    I would like to track something which is only on screen for a few mins out of a many mins video.
    All of the tutorials seem to track from frame to end.
    I know the frame the item appears and the frame it goes.
    Can I only track for that part of the movie?
    I used Davinci for a while about a year ago , and then life changed. Now I have a chance to play around with AV again and try to remember what I learned last year :)
    Any tips would help a lot.

  • @dougdina
    @dougdina 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Casey, thanks for pulling together some of the ways of using tracking.
    I often get confused what to use and where to use it. For example, I know that the Color page offers tracking as well. I believe that you can add an image as you did in just the Color page. The Color page also has both Magic Mask and tracking via using shapes… (can’t remember the name, sorry). My point is that I often don’t know where to begin, i.e., Fusion or Color page. Perhaps the evolution of DR is such that it keeps adding things here and there and overlaps exists. Surely the Color page is phenomenal for a Colorist. It’s only natural that Magic Mask lives here. I am puzzled why it’s not also in Fusion, right?
    Clearly, I have much to learn. I have to assume that, over time, I’ll have attained a greater understanding of Fusion and the Color page and use them for their designed intent. Now, I’m a bit lost.
    I always appreciate your videos and humor.

    • @HikingWithCooper
      @HikingWithCooper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From my experience, you want to build in Fusion and modify in color. So you would build a screen replacement in Fusion but you'd change the color of the screen (typically...you can do color in Fusion to some extent) in color, often using a power window to select which part you want to change. Working in the color page, I find, is easier to learn but it's also very limiting. Once Fusion starts to click, it becomes oh so powerful. You can also do a lot of this in edit. You can do audio in edit. But there is so much to be gained from doing things in the "correct" page.

    • @dougdina
      @dougdina 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HikingWithCooper Thank you for providing you insight. I totally agree with everything you said. When editing audio, it’s crystal clear that Fairlight is where you should be; tons of precise control. Sure, I currently find Fusion a bit difficult to understand but I’m getting better. It’ll take soon time and usage for me to pull it all together.
      Cheers!!

    I record shaky sports footage. What I would like to know, is how to smooth thing out when the quick stabilization tool isn't enough. If I simply use the planar tracker to stabilize an area, than the footage looks too stable and unnatural, with that point being completely fixed. Is there a way to LIMIT the amount of stabilization (and so reduce the cropping), smoothing out the movements of the frame relative to a given point?

    Casey- Absolutely love your videos and coming from the learning and dev field I highly commend you on your teaching skills. Wish more TH-cam tutorial publishers would listen and learn how effective teaching is done by watching your content. I have an issue that I am not able to find any videos or explanations on: How do you do screen replacement in Resolve 18 when the screen becomes partially or temporarily obstructed? I have a scene for a short film I'm editing and the lead character temporarily blocks part of the screen I am trying to replace. I don't want to remove the character obviously, I just want it to look normal when she passes in front of the screen or partially blocks it. Help! From searching on YT I am inferring that it has something to do with rotoscoping, but I wish there was simply a step by step demonstration video showing what to do when the replaced screen in the case where there's a partial or momentary obstruction (which is also important to the scene, so it cannot be removed). Thanks if and when you could reply! -from Japan

    • @CaseyFaris
      @CaseyFaris  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Boy that's tricky. Usually you would have to manually fix the track if something goes in front, then roto or use green screen techniques to put your screen behind the fg elements. Not an easy task.

    • @AkamatsuCreative
      @AkamatsuCreative 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CaseyFaris Thanks Casey. Ugh - the challenge is as hard as I feared. I'm still in the learner stage of Resolve, so I certainly don't have any fancy roto skills. I'll give you a little more detail in case you can give me any specific suggestions. We view the actor from behind as she's watching a large screen TV. A small corner portion of the TV is blocked by her head. In another shot in the same scene, the whole TV is viewable but then she holds up the remote control to change the channel, and for that brief moment her hand/remote blocks a tiny portion of the TV. Anyway, I appreciate that you replied to my question, as I'm in the thick of this edit. As a last resort of course I'll be forced to just cut around the shots. UPDATE-- finding little breadcrumbs hinting at solutions, but nothing clear enough for me to follow and apply to my problem-- it seems to be related to "occlusion masking" and rotoscoping. But I don't know how to apply those at my level without a tutorial. -James

      @@CaseyFaris thanks. I don’t have a 3d camera. The the footage is from a video game I’m making a show off of so I can get better at editing.

    Used this before but for some reason on my current project, I cannot get it to “track to end”. It blips and that’s it…

    When I hit track to end button nothing happens. Mask turns green, but nothing else.

    this tracker is not working. When I press the triangle all the way to the right it jumps one frame and stops .. Why? Nothing happens then. I set the frame correctly with the set button. Davinci Resolve 18 free.

    Whenever I press "Track to end" it starts a render but it doesnt actually complete or even start going through the frames, Its stays at the set frame and freezes davinci resolve. Eventually ending up crashing it. I know its not my pc since its a higher end pc and the tracker used to work just fine. Whats the issue????

      Ive just done some testing. the planar tracker seems to have an issue when attempting to create shorts. But when I attempt a track in an actual video format everthing seems to work just fine. The problem for me is that I only need to use the tracker inside of shorts currently

    This seems to be stuff I did quite easily in Adobe Premiere. Here, I hardly understood shit. But given time, I will.

    doesnt work for me. the slightest horizontal movement of my footage makes the image that i want to track on top of the footage move vertically by a lot.

    Not sure if TH-cam is deleting my comment? I commented this yesterday and I apologize if it is a duplicate.
    Do you have any tips on how to "fix" a track on more challenging scenarios? I am currently manually keyframing the position of my corner pins at every frame and was hoping that Fusion has a smarter way to do that instead. Imagine if a tablet is being flipped around the scene and I had to replace the screen throughout the motion.
    Let me know if you have any insight! Thanks 😊

      I’ve definitely had to things like that. Some shots are just hard.
