Thank you both for sharing this playthrough! We are very proud that Roll Player has become the kind of game people find memorable and still love playing nearly a decade later. It's a thrill to see it on your table!
Love this game! Monique, you could have completed the goals is the last round. If you had discarded one card for 2 coins you would have got 11 coins - enough for two attribute actions - increase Boost 5 to 7, and flip the 2 to 5, gaining exactly 15 :)
Such a terrific game! I love introducing people to this game, and watching them realise that it's not at all what they were expecting it to be based on the aesthetics. The Monsters & Minions expansion really makes it pop!
Absolute BEST part of the video is at 3:26, where Monique says "...which I believe are the attributes that are in D & D," to which Naveen replies, "I wouldn't know." Deadpan. So good. Naveen, you crack me up, dude!
Wow you guys really go all out decorating for spooky season!🤪😜 Cute little pumpkin nonetheless.😊 I've never played, so glad to see a teach and playthrough of this game. Thank you!
I’ve never played Roll Player with Monsters & Minions. Thanks for showing it. I like to play Broom Service and Mists over Carcassonne during the Halloween season.
Loved the playthrough thanks!! I have been wanting to play this one for a while. I have always thought it would be a fun game night to play this game then use the characters in a D&D one-shot.
Thank you for playing this game. I have it on my shelf, but I haven't played in a long time. I think it's been there, neglected, for far too long. Also, that expansion looks like a good one
I've only played Roll Player once or twice and it's been a long while. I need to get it off the shelf and play it solo! Really enjoyed this playthrough and your showcasing of the M & M expansion. Watch out for those owlbears! ; )
I enjoy so many of Thunderworks “Role player tale” games, but never played Roll Player. Really enjoyed your play through. Seems like the expansion really rounds out the game play. Side note: finally found the use for the strange card in my Cartographer’s game box.
Loved this playthrough! I was so invested the entire time :D I've always been vaguely interested in this game and it has now been added to my wishlist haha. In the last round- could Monique have taken the 5 boost die, then discarded a card to do the swap attribute action and swap the blue 4 from the wis row with the boost 8 from the int row? I think that would make the int row sum 14 and the wis one 15 which are just the bare minimums (not sure if it would've helped her win though)
I played this one a lot and recently just parted with it. Not sure if you mentioned it, but there are monthly solo challenges on BGG that’s quite fun to participate in
Fun game solo- managed to grab these as a bundle with familiars for a bargain at £70. Interested to hear you can use the players you make in Roll Player Adventures, seems the logical follow on. Great video as always! 😅
I was just thinking about how from 2016-2022 this amazing wave of awesome board games came out. Like some of my favorite all time came out in that span. Haven’t been buying new games lately and instead replaying which is good. Maybe I’ve just been in the hobby so long that acquisition doesn’t bother me as much but I’m just not as interested in many of the games coming out right now and would rather play some of these older games. Great video.
Of the publisher's games, I really like Cape May and Tenpenny Parks. I haven't played this game yet. But thanks for the tutorial. I would love to see Tenpenny Park on the channel.
An even more strange animal would be a regular bear, right Monique? ;) Also agree very much, this game needs the M&M exp. The base game is fine, but then the only goal is to max out. The expansion makes for a lot more fun experience and more puzzley.
Roll Player is great! It’s a great solo game as well. I haven’t tried the expansion but it’s on my list! It’s a tad pricey to get both the base game and the expansion right away
Yeah there was an error in that section, we went back and checked the file. Looks like we accidentally toggled the ‘disable clip’ for about 14 seconds. Fortunately it was during a cleanup step!
My buddy and I love this game. He likes the Monsters and Minions expansion but says it takes away from the original gameplay. Now, you can't go to the market every turn. We feel like maybe you should be able to hit the market and optionally still be able to fight a minion. Sometimes a player can miss out on completing sets of armor, for example. It's good with the expansion but the base game felt good before too. The decision to go to the market or to hunt can be frustrating. Don't get me wrong, I really like the expansion a lot!
I backed both of these, back when the expansion was released on Kickstarter. I believe this expansion really brings out the satisfaction and replayability of the game. I enjoy the dice placement challenge and defeating the minions. I wasn’t interested in the second expansion as like most games, creators feel the need for new mechanics. I feel the first expansion is enough, but wouldn’t mind seeing a Big Box expansion to hold them all and at least 6 new monsters and clue abilities tokens
Thank you for your support! We are also happy to report that there IS a big-box available direct from us. It comes with Fiends and Familiars expansion inside, with room for the original game and Monsters & Minions, and takes the appearance of a large magical tome that looks sharp on the shelf. :)
I really like this game. But even better: Roll Player Adventures. Best story in an adventure game with simple but solid mechanics. A campaign that can actually be finished.
Doesn't she have to move her alignment when she buys the "Loyal" card around 38:25? I can't tell what direction but if it's to the left, I don't think she can legally buy it.
Thanks for the video. I really like it when you play older games. I like the concept of RP more than the gameplay. It's fine for what it is, but ultimately feels like half a game to me, even with Monsters and Minions. I've heard good things about RP Adventures, and perhaps this is where it shines. I'm personally a bit wary of campaign games in general where often twelve game nights are consumed (that's a lot of other great games not played) and the game often plays 'you' instead of the other way around.
If memory serves me correctly, after a minion is defeated, I believe it is immediately replaced, by a new minion, so the next player has an opportunity to challenge a minion.
@ Actually, you did. Sorry. After you got done taking down the Gnoll, you got back into talking and your end step stayed opened for just a bit. Again sorry and thank you for the play. Now I’m in the mood to play again.
I was getting ready for a Halloween evening of Abomination - The Heir of Frankenstein, and Golem. Turns out my group are all away for various holidays! Booo! 😭
This expansion slowly eroded the love of Roll Player in my group. We had played RP 5-6 times before adding M&M. We enjoyed the expanded experience the first time we tried it, less so the second time, and by the third time, we were waxing nostalgic about the base game's focus and relative simplicity. I remember it took me a long time to separate out the expansion components, but it was worth it (for us). 😅
never felt the need for the second expansion, this first one perfects the game. my only criticism is the monster can be easy at the end so I always use the solo side even if not playing solo.
Personally I think only with the expansion does this even become a real game, but I like my games on the heavier side. Still, I'm predisposed to not like this game, because I have a love-hate relationship with dice. By which I mean, I hate them, and they love to screw me over. It was very funny to me at 1:07:05 when Monique went "An Owlbear that's the strangest animal mix I've ever heard of". In my mind the Owlbear is like _the_ most famous D&D monster so it's become weirdly familiar to me by this point though of course the _reason_ it became the most famous D&D monster is precisely because of how odd a combination it is. According to legend, the creature was inspired by a weird toy Gary Gygax found one day and made a monster in _Chainmail_ (the wargaming predecessor to _Dungeons and Dragons_ )
If you want to play something "spooky", you should do a playthrough of "Monsters on Board". A nice dice drafting game in which you literally have to collect "spooky juice". Very Halloween-y!
Have you played Roll Player? Let us know what your thoughts are!
Played this last night with the expansion.
Big love thoughts ❤️
I've played it on Steam. Really hoping they add the Monsters & Minions expansion!
Thank you both for sharing this playthrough! We are very proud that Roll Player has become the kind of game people find memorable and still love playing nearly a decade later. It's a thrill to see it on your table!
Thank you for the game! I enjoy it a lot. I playing maybe twice per year and it is always like coming back to an old friend.
This game gets so much better with monsters and minions. Great to see someone talking about it. One of my favorites.
One of my favorite games in the entire history of board gaming.
Love this game!
Monique, you could have completed the goals is the last round. If you had discarded one card for 2 coins you would have got 11 coins - enough for two attribute actions - increase Boost 5 to 7, and flip the 2 to 5, gaining exactly 15 :)
What a terrific playthrough. Many thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've never tried this game, but after watching this, I definitely want to. Thanks for all of the great playthroughs!

Thank you for the playthroiugh :) Gave me the idea to play it next weekend :)
Have fun!!

Roll Player is one of my favourite games! Love to play it with the monsters and minions expansion
I’ve never played Roll Player with Monsters & Minions. Thanks for showing it. I like to play Broom Service and Mists over Carcassonne during the Halloween season.
I love this game. I’m also play Tuesday so watching to refresh myself on the expansion.
Purchased this game for the solo play but it was so fun watching with even one more player! Thanks for opening my (spooky) eyes...🥂
Time to dust it off!!
Great game! We are going to play it today with Monsters & Minions expansion.
I love that you played an older game!
I love Roll Player especially with Monsters and Minions. Roll Player Adventures is also a fantastic campaign game.
I really enjoy these reviews.
I've only played Roll Player once or twice and it's been a long while. I need to get it off the shelf and play it solo! Really enjoyed this playthrough and your showcasing of the M & M expansion. Watch out for those owlbears! ; )
I have both but have only played the base set! Maybe I’ll have to play the expansion now after watching this.
"One... kindness..." Great vid, as always.
I enjoy so many of Thunderworks “Role player tale” games, but never played Roll Player. Really enjoyed your play through. Seems like the expansion really rounds out the game play. Side note: finally found the use for the strange card in my Cartographer’s game box.
love to see older games played...i remember seeing Monique play this game on another channel years ago
Loved this playthrough! I was so invested the entire time :D I've always been vaguely interested in this game and it has now been added to my wishlist haha. I've only played the base game, and I've heard that Monsters and Minions makes it better. Now I see that it definitely does.
Cool game, never had the chance to play it but it seems like a nice mid weight euro style game.
Fun game solo- managed to grab these as a bundle with familiars for a bargain at £70. Interested to hear you can use the players you make in Roll Player Adventures, seems the logical follow on. Great video as always! 😅
Love the shirt Monique, wings of freedom 🫀
Woo hoo ✊, Monique is super excited that you noticed!

Two thumbs up for Tenpenny Parks. Great medium light game with really fun mechanics, art and theme.
An even more strange animal would be a regular bear, right Monique? ;)
Also agree very much, this game needs the M&M exp. The base game is fine, but then the only goal is to max out. The expansion makes for a lot more fun experience and more puzzley.
For the Halloween season I like Dreadful Meadows and am checking out Deckula.
Roll Player is great! It’s a great solo game as well. I haven’t tried the expansion but it’s on my list! It’s a tad pricey to get both the base game and the expansion right away
We still haven’t tried the next expansion, but really feel ‘Monsters & Minions’ exp is seamless.
Hi. At 31:10 you seem to have an editing error. Just FYI.
Yeah there was an error in that section, we went back and checked the file. Looks like we accidentally toggled the ‘disable clip’ for about 14 seconds. Fortunately it was during a cleanup step!
You always do great playthroughs. One question that I may have missed what is the Heart value on the Vampire for?
My buddy and I love this game. He likes the Monsters and Minions expansion but says it takes away from the original gameplay. Now, you can't go to the market every turn. Roll Player is great. Also play Cartographers and you're basically set for an impromptu DnD session.
Love Cartographers too!!
I really like this game. But even better: Roll Player Adventures. Best story in an adventure game with simple but solid mechanics. A campaign that can actually be finished.
1:23:48 Can't help but feel sorry for Naveen given Monique turned out to be Selfish and Disloyal this game.
At least she has a cool AoT-shirt.
Haha
Doesn't she have to move her alignment when she buys the "Loyal" card around 38:25? I can't tell what direction but if it's to the left, I don't think she can legally buy it.
Hi there, for the 'trait' cards you move the attribute cube "if possible". So if you are against the edge, you are still allowed to take it.
Thanks for the video. I really like it when you play older games. I like the concept of RP more than the gameplay. It's fine for what it is, but ultimately feels like half a game to me, even with Monsters and Minions. I've heard good things about RP Adventures, and perhaps this is where it shines. May I ask where do you guys get the dice tray from?
This expansion slowly eroded the love of Roll Player in my group. We had played RP 5-6 times before adding M&M. The beauty of a game is in how you enjoy playing it - so always play it however feels best to you!
The ipad app is great. I wish it had the expansions though
never felt the need for the second expansion, this first one perfects the game. my only criticism is the monster can be easy at the end so I always use the solo side even if not playing solo.
Yeah, if you can see the 3 traits of the monster early enough you can really rack up the dice 🎲.
is it just me? because I get triggered when they take the initiative card, when they can just put their extra coloured cube on the initiative card.
Personally I think only with the expansion does this even become a real game, but I like my games on the heavier side. Still, I'm predisposed to not like this game, because I have a love-hate relationship with dice. By which I mean, I hate them, and they love to screw me over.

Haven’t heard of that one! Will look it up on BGG. 🎃
