baseline hot brew coffee: 1/2c of coffee to brew 12 cups so (8*12=96oz water) or (1 tbsp per cup) COLD BREW COFFEE: 96oz cold water and 1/2 cup of your coffee. let set for 24 to 48 hrs - (baseline setup) I use "Folgers Classic Roast" its a bit fine, but works nice for me. Now I make 3 pots at a time (288oz or 36 cups of coffee) I only use 1-1/2cups. If its a light coffee I add 1/2 cup more coffee thats it. Let it sit in the frig for 2 days and then strain it.
I'm using that now. Probably will see how Maxwell House and other grocery store brands taste, including Starbucks. The espresso coffee I had in the pantry turned out very fruity and different to the Folgers. Folgers I would say tastes more chocolately and dark - definitely a "stick to your ribs" coffee that needs a bit of cream or sweetener.
DIY Tryin ok, been awake for 36 hours straight, blood pressure a bit elevated still, haven't even had any nicotine, thanks for helping me quit smoking btw, but i think i can feel my bread growing. can't see treble as red anymore, but bass is still showing indigo to dark green. i've never done meth before, but i think i have a frame of reference, vacuumed my house 10 times, shampooed the carpets, and thinking about starting rebuilding my beowulf cluster server. i have a feelign that the come-down's gonna be an evil bitch!!!!
Thank you. I'm a major ice/blended coffee drinker and this method looks simple and safer. When I brew I'd use a simple coffee maker, pour it and a huge mason drink dispenser, and then chill it to cool. Using purified would probably make it even better.
I have done cold brew in a mason jar, french press, and the Toddy. The Toddy is the best by far. I just go to Starbucks, buy a dark roast bag, and have them grind it. I follow the directions on the Toddy so I steep for 12 hours and make killer iced coffee.
Yep right in a big jug, last one was 6oz bean ground med/coarse to coarse into 80oz container (actually an Aladdin pitcher that looks like a MASON jar) weight to volume, ahh 2.4L jug around 2400g H2O to 168g coffee, this need not be precision, but roughly 14:1 by weight. Fill with cold filtered or other quality water, stir up the mud/slurry, cover with plastic wrap, and put in fridge 24-36 hrs. Then I just use a french press as my filter. Some sediment will be present. I like cream in it add ice and its smooth cocoa semi sweet like nectar robustly caffeinated that will have you trying different recipes, beans, yeah whole new realm for a coffee lover.
Man I used to watch Patrick on The Screen Savers back in the day. Cool guy i’m glad he’s doing this show. youtube has made it so easy for people to create short or long form content without having to worry about the constraints of advertisers, FCC censors and network assholes. Congrats guys I subscribed!
My mom makes sun tea every summer, she has a special jar for it that is years older than I am. It's so much sweeter than when you brew black tea on the stove.
Mom always makes sun tea during the summer. A big 2quart glass jar witht he spicket on the bottom and a wide open top with lid. 5-6 bags of tea and water then let it set in the sun for several hours
I own a chocolate company in the rainforest of belize...you have given me ideas.....I make a chocolate tea that is incredible but cold brew may make it even more incredible
been making it for a few days now. sooo much better than the coffee maker. and i'm in texas with summer on the horizon. so yea.... will be making it a lot. thanks for sharing the video. ya'll are funny.
Cold press is great! Recipes that call for a stronger coffee-to-water ratio can be "cut" with water (hot or cold) to adjust any flavors. The recipe I use calls for 8oz coffee per gallon of water. For other topic ideas, Patrick and Michael, perhaps a DIY coffee roaster made out of a modified air popcorn popper. I just made one myself - it's very simple and improves coffee quality immensely!
patrick norton There's a bunch of videos here on youtube showing how to roast coffee beans in an air popper. Some have modified their machines, mostly to override the auto shut off if it overheats. I roast in an air popper I found at my local Goodwill store for $2.00, just as it came, no modifications. It does a fantastic job of roasting and in only 5 minutes or so, depending on how dark I want the beans. The only real drawback to using the popper is you can only do small 1/2 cup batches at a time. But it's a great way to have seriously fresh coffee every time!
you can try to put some tea leaves in a 16 oz bottle, fill it with water and leave it overnight in the refrigerator. It gets a different flavor than sun tea but still great.
Lol. My ratio is 1/2 cup grinds to 3 3/4 cups water. It is stupid strong. (I tasted the results without diluting it...and it's like...holy hell.) This morning, I drank 250 mls of the stuff and it's like...I can see through time...
I do 5 tbsp of coffee every 8 ounces of water. I also use cafe bustelo espresso and about a tablespoon of sugar. It comes out really strong and I love it. I don’t add ice to my coffee on top of that, and I let it brew for about 24 hours before straining.
@astrangeone Your ratio is very similar to what they used here. They mentioned using 2 tbsp coffee grounds per 1 cup of water. Which compared to yours would be 8 tbsp (or ½ cup) coffee grounds to 4 cups water. Many like this ratio as is, but as you mentioned, many still find this to be quite strong and is still able to be diluted further to about a 50/50 mix (of the coffee infusion with water dilution), if you want it a bit weaker. 👍
Good change of pace from the electronics videos! Those mason jars remind me of making jam (jelly). Could you guys do a jam video? Please wash the jars first!
Will this produce the same product as something coming out of a proper ice drip device? I'd prefer the mason jar approach if the flavors comes out the same. Also does it need to be cold water? What about room temperature?
crcaccounts Between this method and drip cold brew, there is little to no difference in flavor and aroma. Using cold water is recommended but room temperature water would work too. For me 24 hours is the sweet spot, but if your coffee grounds are too finely grinded, 15 -17 hours would be best. If you want to further decrease brewing time, use hot water but only live it over night (8-10 hours)
But using hot water for cold brew beats the whole purpose of "cold brewing"... Cold brewing decreases the amount that fatty acid get dissolved in the coffee by 60 percent, making it less bitter and healthier. Since the fatty acid melts in hot water, doing this with hot water is not recommended
DIY Tryin About 24 hours of steeping in the jar and... I was expecting a higher caffeine content considering the copious amount of coffee and tea I put in. But all in all, one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had. Thanks for this DIY
DIY Tryin Request: At room temperature in a sufficient vacuum water will boil. I lack the necessary equipment for this. Could you try to percolate coffee in this manner? I would be curious to know how Coffee perculated cold tastes.
Anyone have any idea what kind of spinning device he attached to the Hario grind shaft at about 0:03? I tried a couple of times with a hand drill, but am afraid the high speed might ruin the grindstone inside the Hario.
Oh Snap, yall the first people I know who've even heard of Black Blood of the Earth. I've been wanting to try it for years, but just can't justify the price.
about the fancy cold brew setups: the last picture you showed is a "yama tower" for traditional Japanese cold brew. It's a whole different world than cold brew coffee (though I am absolutely disgusted by it)
no..no shaking the jar please. it will make coffee more bitter, less smooth. Been 80 times experimenting jar cold brew with various beans. Well my recommendation is always be patient to make a nice cup of coffee. Still a nice show. Love the spirit of DIY!
Tried cold brewing out after watching this the other day. Coffee came out really bitter. Luckily is was just a small test batch.Gonna experiment a bit and figure out what went wrong.
I've seen other videos that stated that if the coffee is ground too fine, the end result will taste bitter. I've only tried this with grounds slightly finer than french press, which is quite coarse.
I use bulletproof coffee beans I grind them on the courses grind which your supost to do for cold brew course. Bulletproof is certified organic clean and certified mold free. I put around two cups grounds in 2 qt mason jar fill with water let it set about 16/18 hrs filter and it’s very smooth not bitter at all. I U can use 1-1/2 cups grounds.
Oh man where do I get a power Crystal? Damn! I have no power crystals. jeez what am I going to do man? Totally messed up my cold brew karma. Will putting it next to my salt lamp work? Come on man help me out.
I hate coffee, I'm with Michael it's all about tea. I been thinking about trying to make my own flavored soda. Based on the carbonated water episoda you guys did.
Well I have many different art styles under my belt. Can't wait for the episode. Patrick is bring back that sodajerk style son!!! It's kungfu but tasty and doesn't hurt your face. P.S. I'm a huge fan .
baseline hot brew coffee: 1/2c of coffee to brew 12 cups so (8*12=96oz water) or (1 tbsp per cup)

ok, note to everyone out there, i brewed this, and drinking 1/2 cup of it.... I CAN SEE SOUND!!!!!! WTF HAVE YOU DONE TO ME??!?!!?!?!!?!?!!?
Sprinkle in a little bit of caffeine powder and you'll be able to travel through time as well.

I've been experimenting; drip grind, stirred, in the fridge, for 30 hours, then double filtered is pretty tasty for my Mexican coffee beans.
Those are strong..

Awesome. I'm more of a tea guy as well, but a good cup of coffee is never wrong. ;)

I like that idea. Sending it to Patrick...but knowing him, we'll end up roasting 50lbs at a time using 55 gallon drums.
DIY Tryin I'm up for modding a popcorn popper... where'd you find the HOWTO, Andy Duss ?
patrick norton There's a bunch of videos here on youtube showing how to roast coffee beans in an air popper. Some have modified their machines, mostly to override the auto shut off if it overheats. If you make it in a french press make sure to use coarse grind, as fine grind will slip through the metal sieve.
I've always enjoyed a bit of crunch in my freshly pressed coffee!
Drinking mine now... OMGAWWWDDDD.... this for me is revolutionary....
Haha, glad you like it!
Great channel btw, keep the vids coming!
When you say "syrupy" are you referring to the concentration or the change in viscosity?
This is a great idea. I tried it with instant coffee and it worked really well.
Great show guys, but now I'm in the mood for some tea lol
I've been making sun tea in gallon jars forever... same basic concept.
you can try to put some tea leaves in a 16 oz bottle, fill it with water and leave it overnight in the refrigerator. It gets a different flavor than sun tea but still great.
Fun video....I cold brew and love the taste.....and my gut loves the low acid!!!
Sun Tea. Haven't had that for a few years now. Since I live in Canada I think I need to wait another month at least before making some though.

I heard that Descendents reference in there... That takes me back...
That looks cool and something I might try.
Big fan of the show, keep it up.
Should it taste sweet or sweeter compared to regular coffe
Can you make cold-brew coffee with a whipping siphon, to make it in a few seconds rather than hours?
Nice coffee tutorial. Now to cold brew some coffee and watch some old Tech TV! :D
Good change of pace from the electronics videos! Those mason jars remind me of making jam (jelly). Could you guys do a jam video? Please wash the jars first!
Strawberry season is just starting here in NorCal... I'll see if I can scrounge enough fruit to make jam.

Is eney way to do this with hot chocolate or chocolate flaved something like coco bens ?
I made the cold brew recipe but I didn't filter the grinds out until two weeks later. It has like a film over it. Is this safe to drink?
AmbitiousHarley yeah it's fine it's the oils from the beans.
Great Video Dudes!
NEVER USE OLD OIL BOTTLES FOR MAKING COFFEE
Love me some sun tea.
I need to try this I love coffee
How could you not make sun tea in the summer? GET WITH IT MAN!
Hopefully DIY Tryin will do a sun tea episode that would be awesome to see!
could ya knock it off with the epileptic editing please

5:1 volume or weight ratio? Huge difference
nausicaä I am going to assume volume. They did say something about 2 tablespoons per cup
I left it in the fridge for about a week because I totally forgot it......Not sure if it's still safe to drink...
