Last week during our live Q and A, someone asked about the Boss Katana Sneaky amps pack. I always thought this was an April Fools gag but someone sent me the amps to try out. I've been through the different amps and to be honest I was a little underwhelmed apart from 1 tone, and it's great. In this video, I look at the Boss Katana Sneaky amps patches and edit a tone so it's usable in my workflow. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

Studio rat, this is a great video. No wasted time, yet definitive examples of what you're shooting for and how you got there. Impressed...and subbed.

Holy Moly! I've had my Katana for about 8 months, and only now am I beginning to realize how powerful it is. Awesome video. Copied your settings exactly and it sounds great. Thanks!

This patch was the first one that stood out from the others! A great clean tone with that little grit you mentioned, so easy to adjust into different sounds for metal!

Glad to see that you found one that is usable. Thanks for doing this video; it is very helpful to see how you build a useful patch up from a very sterile one. Cheers Paul.

Nice. As usual, really great walk through of how to work with the tones.
I have had a hard time differentiating the various clean sneaky amps, and frankly just haven't known what to do with them. I played around with a few, but never came up with anything that was any more useful than what I could do with the regular clean channel.
I do, however, use the higher gain amps a lot more. In particular, I've found the R-FIRE MODERN, CORE METAL, MS1959 I+II, ORNG RB, and HiGAIN STACK pretty useful for some of my higher gain needs.
Whether they live up to any of the real amps they may emulate isn't a question that matters to me, as I don't have any of those amps and likely never will :)

I got a Katana 50 watt when they first came out (years ago!). It still works perfectly because it’s a Boss product. If you get a cheap laptop and download the software, you will “never need” another amp (if like me you’re just a guitar hobby person with a little tiny home studio setup). This guy Paul is showing you how you can make these things sound like any amp, without the hassle of tubes... They sound right and they feel right...for a few hundred dollars. How?? I do not know. I don’t use the sneaky amps...no need to. To be fair, if I was a big time rock star, I’d have 20 Marshall stacks for sure. But I’d also then have a guy who knows how to make those f’n things sound right too. Cheers to all! jr

Great video Paul. The Sneaky Amps originally worked for the MK1 Katana, I believe they are base dry amp models from one of the multi FX pedals, I think it's the GT100 that shared some of the software with the Katana. There are a couple that don't work at all on the MK2 Katana but the rest work ok.

Just subscribed to your channel. Your videos are a great help for people who have limited knowledge of amps and pedals and what could be done with these budgets amps. I love the sweeping track and the tones both clean and rhythm are amazing. Can you please do a video creating similar tones on spark amp with the same track? It will be a good comparison too. Cheers.

I've only found one or two that's useable, but they are essential to the tight Modern metal tone I was going for.

Have you heard of the Katana floorboard FX software? Someone told me about it here on TH-cam, but when I tried to download it my computer wouldn't let me. Supposedly you can move the FX blocks around however you like which is why I wanted to try it. I just want to be able to put the noise suppressor in front of the amplifier. It's for the mk1 and mk2 as well as for a other Boss and roland products.

I love the rectifier. Completely different tone that suits Evanescence songs and better than any metal patches I've downloaded. The clean ones are nice too and sound different to the Katana tones but they are not a big improvement.

Can't remember which one of the two RFire sneaky amps it is, but it's an essential part of my tight modern metal tone. Can't say it sounds like a real Rectifier though.

Do you ever create any profiles for the Fender GTX? If not, what do you like better about the Katana over the Fender Mustang GTX? I like both, but I tend to use the GTX way more because I don’t have to plug the GTX in to a PC to change pedal settings like I do with the Katana. The GTX has an on amp display, so I can change all the pedal settings without having to use any app or PC (there is a super easy app that works over Bluetooth, but it’s not required), and a footswitch to toggle each on/off and a looper. So that’s why I tend to use the GTX far more often than the Katana.

Hi SD, Ive never tried the GTX I’m afraid.

  • @piage84

unrelated to the video, could you use a limiter like the dbx 160x in the katana instead of a comp in front? Or are limiters better to be placed right at the end of the chain?

Yeah, I don't know that I've been impressed with many of the Katana overdrives either. I started buying external overdrive pedals and have been experimenting with several (J Rockett 'The Dude', Bogner Harlow V2) after you mentioned you use.

I've never understood why the sneaky amps are so popular. I tried them and felt like I downgraded my amp. Maybe people feel like they're hacking the amp and making it better, in my opinion the regular models are far superior than anything in the sneaky amp packs.

Hard disagree from me. Some of my best tones came from the h and k model and the recto model.
