big gators football fan since the mid 1990's. i used to work in a bakery back then in my 20's and in going to college. a co-worker was a big florida state fan so i started watching college football, and the fun n' gun offence got me hooked lol. about this interview i really appreciate the hard work the students put in. really appreciated the sincere mutual respect that steve and evan the interviewer showed. def was a treat to hear HBC talk the way he did. wishing coach and all these media students all the best. 💙 cheers from southern ontario, canada 🇨🇦
Great Interview Knight!!!!! Up here in South Carolina, we LOVE THE HBC too!!! We thank Florida for loaning him to us 4 the BEST DECADE of our Gamecock Football History! I will NEVER FORGET having to pinch myself when he was announced as our new Head Coach and will NEVER FORGET attending the 1st SPRING GAME. I remember what he said. He told the truth about our history. Said "you guys haven't had much to cheer about! I promise that that is about to change!" We immediately starting upsetting top ranked teams which HBC refers to as "making history." We actually knocked off Tennessee and Florida his first season. Florida was ranked super high as Urban Meyere had just started and had them playing great. Actually, we had a chance to cost Florida 1 of their 2 national titles under Meyer in his 2nd season. Unbelievingly, we had 3 or 4 field goals blocked, and our kicker was one of the best in country,, who ended up kicking for the Tom Brady led Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Bucs! HBC had immediate success(especially for us as we had only had won 8 or more games just 4 times in our entire history. We had won just 1 bowl game before the year 2000, and it was not a "big time" bowl. Fortunately, the first legend to ever coach us was Lou Holtz, who took over the worst football program in college football. A team that had won just one game before Holtz became our Head Coach, In his first season, he would go WINLESS and every sports show host reminded him that he had made a terrible mistake choosing us over Alabama and other big time coaching jobs. Lou would prove them all wrong in his 2nd season, and would win 9 games back to back in 2000 and 2001 capped off by back to back New Years Day Bowls over Ohio State. During those great couple of historic wins, I got invited by our local news anchors in Panama City Beach, Fl to be on the sideline for the Florida Vs South Carolina game because I was the top rated morning radio host. It was my first time at "The Swamp" and quickly realized how intimidating it was to be in that atmosphere. We were the CBS SEC Game of the Week at 3:30Pm and I saw a sign that had "CBS Can't Beat Spurrier." Spurrier struck fear in everyone and because of that almost everyone that WAS NOT A FLORIDA FAN HATED HIM because they knew he was not just going to beat you, but embarass you! However, this game was for the SEC East and we came in with just 1 loss and that was extremely close game at Alabama. Long story short, we would go up 21-3. I was high five'ing our mascot Cocky and our sideline reporter at the time and now Voice of the Gamecocks and former Gamecock Legendary QB Todd Ellis. I was on an adrenaline high, but I will never forget what Todd Ellis said to me. "I wish it was 12 minutes left in the 4th Quarter rather than the 1st Quarter." We had gotten lucky with a turnover, a return, a punt block. HBC would fake a punt on his own 20 yard line or so, and that began the ROUT. We would lose 54--21 hahahahaha . But HBC paid us back and it is funny how you realize that you do not hate the man, you respect and admire the man....ESPECIALLY WHEN HE IS YOUR COACH! HE took us 33-6 over 3 years with all 3 seasons having 11 wins and capped off with New Years Day Bowls each of the 3 years over the best Big 10 teams including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. This included an unprecedented 5 STRAIGHT WINS OVER OUR RIVAL, CLEMSON. WE BEAT A #1 TEAM FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A GREAT 2010 SEASON BEFORE THIS HISTORIC 3 YEARS THAT INCLUDED A SEC EAST CHAMPIONSHIP. AND A TOP 4 FINISH. SPURRIER had did what NO ONE BELIEVED he could do as far as the "experts," BUT HE HAD ALL OF US IN SOUTH CAROLINA FINALLY BELIEVING. WE KNEW. FLORIDA FANS KNEW. NEVER DOUBT THE HBC. AND AS A GAMECOCK FOR 50 YEARS NOW THAT EXPERIENCED THE LOW OF LOWS. GOING TO GAMES hoping we could just get to .500 for the first 27 years of my life...I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT SPURRIER CHOSE US OVER A LOT OF ESTABLISHED, GREAT FOOTBALL PROGRAMS. PROGRAMS that would of been far easier. Far better for his coaching record. Far better for his trophy room. BUT he chose us. He chose the CHALLENGE! HE CHOSE the one school that no one thought he would. And he didn't just choose us. He STAYED with us! For that, I will always BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL because he surely made good on that Spring Game promise! We HAD A LOT TO CHEER ABOUT! THANK YOU COACH SPURRIER!
Louisville cardinals fan here... I've ALWAYS LOVED Spurrier. I love how funny he was and talked shit about Kentucky 😂😂, but I just love these old guys. It's like listening to my grandpa talking you know, while he was alive of course. But these are the type of people I grew up valuing their actual respect, and it's made me a better person honestly. These old guys were raised WITH GOD and respect themselves and women and children. Real Men with God and Jesus. We need that more in this world

As a Gamecock fan i believe coach Spurrier was a great coach. Definitely the best in gamecock history but i believe one of the best in the country.
So proud of you. Love this interview.
Very good interview with a UF legend.
Go Gators!
@@alliso1240 Great comment.
That kid is a really good interviewer. Never heard spurrier open up like this.
Legend!!!
Excellent interview!

I notice they didn't touch on a certain Fiesta Bowl game...
Great interview !
I’m surprised really. I have little faith in college students these days.
The Gamecocks love the HBC.🏈
The SEC needs you Coach Spurrier. TN is beautiful in the Fall.
As a South Carolina fan, I still hate him and will never forgive him ❤
What are you talking about?
I don’t know what happened
How about quitting in the middle of the year
@@RoscoPColtrane17 Oh that. Well, the man loses interest easily. When things don't go his way, he is out.
He's the best coach you all ever had.
Still hates the Georgia Bulldawgs, but they beat the Gators like a Redheaded Step Child!
Who is that??
What an Ego Maniac!
Steve!!! Please come back for just 2 years to bring our GATORS BACK!!!
@@U.G.A.HEAVY-W8 Spurrier is a champion and a legend, but he doesn't want any part of Kirby.
Dreaming, he can't take another beating from Georgia. That's the reason he retired!
I was just saying the same thing..Florida has been dreadful lately. Lifelong fan and would like to see them back on track.
you are wrong, Alabama beat Florida in the first SEC champ game in 1992. Shame on Spurrier for not correcting you
Spurrier didn't want to shame the kid.
Give him a break.
Yeah believe a guy who dipped out on multiple programs
Come back to coach the Gators!!!
