I grew winter squash and pumpkins in our newly planted orchard. It worked great as a weed suppressing ground cover. I did have to pull a few vines out of the baby fruit trees so they would smother the trees or break them, but that was the only thing to watch out for. I basically planted them, mulched around the seedlings and then "forgot' about them until harvest time. The area was heavily mulched around the plants and fruit trees and had landscape fabric in the walkways. The vining veggies really loved that surface to grow on. NE AL, zone 7B
I am a visual person and anytime that I can put my vision on paper 📝 (no matter what the plan is for) it is a good way to keep on track and see my vision come to life. You are off to an excellent start with your 2023 garden plan. I can’t wait to see everything all grown up and in full bloom. I’m a month behind you - my last frost date is April 23. I do have plants already growing inside. I will be starting herbs and flowers seeds first. Especially the ones that take a long time to grow.
It's great that you've thought out this incredible plan already! Therefore, I plan to make your plan my plan for the similar vegetables we plan to plant. Yes sometimes cheating - in this instance- pays off. You homesteaders are awesome. This kitchen gardener (me) is a copy cat and proud to be a subscriber.
My best recommendation…put fish heads and a cracked egg in the hole you plant your tomatoes in. (If you have critters, put a layer of garden lime over the fish and egg so it covers the smell and they don’t dig it up) And a basil plant in every bed that you’ve planted tomatoes. My grandpa did it that way, and my parents, and me too. One year I didn’t, and it was VERY noticeable. I promise, it works!
Oh my goodness, I have the same problem with my tomatoes! My cherry tomatoes have always flourished but the slicers do not. Last year I harvested maybe a half dozen or so. I really want a bountiful harvest of big tomatoes. I don't have much room but I keep trying every year. Looking forward to seeing how your tomatoes do this year.
I recently heard that heirloom tomatoes struggle with temps over 90°. I am planning my garden to create strategic shade for certain plants. For example, I'm planting my brassicas between a cattle panel of pole beans and a row of okra so that during the height of summer, the brassicas aren't getting baked all day. I'm also planting sunflowers on the west side of my tomatoes so that they get morning to mid day sun but they will get some shade in the afternoon to evening. I moved almost a full zone warmer last year and my tomatoes struggled too. 💚
Thanks for all the tips!! 😆 I did just get in shade cloth I might be using in the height of summer if I can figure out a way to get it to stay over the plants 😅
I was just writing my plan out last night and it can be so much to think about omg! I had to take a break or two lol. I plan on adding cattle panel trellises to my garden as well and I cannot wait! It’s gonna help me so much with space and the look I’ve always wanted for my garden. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Now thats a plan, Good Luck, can't wait to see it. I'm starting really small with just moving here, but through you I can see where I'll end up. So exciting.
We are living in a little town so we have a smallish back yard about 50'x80' so I'm thinking about making self watering containers untill I get our soil amended and built up. Right now in trying to get my perennials is my biggest job this year . We have 3 fruit trees coming and 4 table bunch grape Vines I have to build trellises for. I do plan on making a big raised bed right under or next to my grape Vines. Can't wait to get a bunch of Jersey giants in the ground but I have a lot of amending to do with our heavy clay soil👍 !
Hey Dom, I think it would be an awesome idea to utilize the duck area for pumpkins or big watermelon that you don’t want anyone messing with! That is of course if you can keep the ducks out of it! Do you still have strawberries in the cross garden? God bless praying for a bountiful year! 🙌❤️😊
Oh my goodness lol you have so much going on wow. I'm not as brave as you with the potatoes and tomatoes together. If it were me and it's not but I would use the half of the duck yard for the potatoes then interplant onions garlic tomatoes and herbs together. Just found your Channel and looking forward to your progress and success. Best of luck and God bless.

You could cut a cattle panel in half and use in a 6 ft bed . It could hang over each side by a foot. Still usable space for tomatoes.
