I usually play with the usual rankings in games where they change it around, when I teach new players.
Lots of Italian and Chinese games do it.

For anyone who wishes to play the Irish way. The rules are fairly similar apart from there is no kitty, the last card dealt will be placed on top of the down facing cards, if you have the ace of that suit you can replace the card with one of your own. This is known as "robbing". You also only play to 45 getting 5 for each card you win. Unless you win all 5 in which you "Jinx it out the door" which means you automatically win. You also play with a joker, they are the 3rd best card no matter what trump is up

I should just do different variations of this game.

@@Bsnsobscuregames You totally should! I'd watch it. Make sure to put Irish in the title, that usually gets more attention since most americans think they have Irish genes

My grandparents are from Newfoundland Canada. I was raised playing 45s. We play 4 in the kitty. You have to chose Trump before you look at the kitty, unless you throw away all your cards and go on the kitty, meaning you choose Trump after you look at the kitty. You generally only do this to keep someone from bidding 20 when they can go out. You can only get max 115 and then must bid 20 (don’t have to win the bid) & make at least 20 to go out. There is also a bid called 30 for 60, where if you win every trick you get 60 points, but if you don’t get your bid you lose 30 points. We play partners or teams if you have 4-6 people and there are all kinds of strategies involved when you do that. When we have 6, we do teams of 3 and everyone gets 3 extra cards after the bidding is done, because there are not enough cards for everyone to get as many as they want.

Some of the strategies include when you send in(play your best Trump), it’s etiquette…and in my family, if it’s your send in and you don’t play it right, everyone yells at you.

Forgot one last thing…the dealer can hold the other players bid, and that bidder can then raise their bid, which the dealer can then hold again…all the way to 30. Let’s say I bid 20. The dealer can say I hold your 20. So now the dealer is bidding 20. The original bidder can now bid 25, which the dealer can hold again or let the original bidder win the bid. Bidding starts at 15 or 20. The more people that play, the higher likelihood that all the top Trump cards will ge out. If you play with 6 people, all cards are used, so all Trump cards are in play, but we play teams, so you bid hoping your partners will have something to help you out.

I just read the link included where you can discard up to 4 cards. We play that you can discard them all unless we are playing with 6 people, then you can only discard 3

I love that song. Probably not appropriate for the region but I wanted to use it since it is so good.
