Most cant, i note she can lift her legs. As they are crossed st the knees, indicating she has no complete spinal cord injury ie messages cant travel to the legs to say "leg lift". Also this Indicates she still has some muscle strength. She can also get herself into a regular arm chair.....one of the largest hurdles for most is simply even transferring ie chair to loo. Bed etc..so a good video but in reality. No most wheelchair bound people cannot, not in a regular car. A van that has been gutted, back entry ramp so you can ride your wheelchair into a drivers position is the reality for "most wheelchair users" as she puts it... price tag $100 thousand au plus...minimum. I was watching for step one.... how can i transfer to a normal car? Noone in my family can afford a wheelchair vehicle so for 8 years ive never bern able to go anywhere with them. DONT GET ME WRONG.... YOULL ALL HATE ME NOW... but shes young and naive... dont say " most wheelchair users" most would need some form of hydraulic lift system to even get in, so what happens when you get to your destination???
That was an excellent video I have been in a wheelchair since 1979 and I still drive and live in my own house and find that with the new technology many things become easier. Your video was well-made well written and I’d say I’d give it five stars out of five. All the best
When I first got out of the hospital on a wheelchair I taught that wasn't too much you can do with the wheelchair but watching your videos I'm amazed no nothing it's impossible but it's been five months thank God I'm slowly walking so things are getting a little bit easier than when I was in a wheelchair but I still got a long ways it takes up to 2 years for your nerves stopped generating till then you just have to deal with a lot of pain I'm try to be as much positives possible but its hard because I'm walking slow like a grandma but even now I'm still on my wheelchair wherever I go I think its just easier because I'm used to it I really enjoy your videos I'm glad I found your channel😃
Dana S if you have any kind of nerve pain try a drug called lyrica talk to your doctor about it I helped me so much if you taking gabapentin lyric is like 10 times better and way more effective
+Jasse Golestani You're right I'm taking gabapentin. It's working alright but it could be better. I just had my first epidural injection and I can still feel the nerves. I will totally look up lyrica(I've seen the commercials) and ask my doctor about it. Thank you Jasse😊
My daughter was born without lower limbs and could really benefit from the wheelchair she's using. Where did you get it from? A site I found no longer active. This would be so beneficial for her and children.
Any updated advice on dealing with vehicles with drivers knee airbags? Where can we find help to deactivate the knee air bag for any type of mechanical hand controls.
Thanks so much for watching! We created this video so long ago that it'd be difficult to say which chair brand this is. But we'd love to make some content around selecting the right wheelchair if it'd be helpful. What are your thoughts on that?
I have high functioning autism and I am in the process of trying to go through an evaluation and hopefully go through training. I am new to driving so do you know how long it should take for me to get my license? This is all so hard to get going because of the stupid covid 19
The lightest powered wheelchair I have found in Spain is a Sitgo carbon fibre model weighing 12.5kilos which is just too heavy to manipulate through the front of the car. What is the make of the one you use and it's weight. Also the cost. Paul
Thanks for watching, Paul! Unfortunately, we don't have the make, model, and cost of the chair used in this video. The good news, however, is that we'll be releasing a 4 part updated series for how to choose a wheelchair at the the top of 2025 that might be a lot more helpful. If you subscribe to our channel and turn on notifications, you'll be amongst the first to know once it launches.
Its not in most cases. I got excited to watch this as i miss my freedom of driving so much but i cant even transfer to a normal car.. So was keen to watch, " how to transfer..". When she said "most in wheelchairs", she was way wrong. She clearly has some lower mobility, even if decreased , one of the first things i noticed was she was in a regular lounge chair, wheelchair not in front but beside the chair. WITH her legs crossed over at the knees. To sit like that you must have enough muscle strength to lift your leg up in the air. So its only possible for a very small group ie in a regular car. Ive not sat on a lounge chair for 8 years, cant transfer.... so dont get me wrong but yep i was disappointed when she said most people... most people in wheelchairs cannot do this. Take it from a paraplegic. I cant get in and out of bed... Its possible but in her case, she has some lower mobility. For people who cannot get out of a chair?? They still need a wheelchair accessible car. I was more caught be the how to transfer to the car... thats the first step ie if i could even transfer to a normal car eg to go out with family.....id be stoked. Getting in the car, step one......
I drive big trucks to small cars with portable hand controls. I don't have any problems getting in or out of ANY vehicles. Almost 20 years practice....oh and you're cute if you don't mind me saying so.
Hello, Mary Allison. It's a good video! And I'd like to know where did you buy that kind of adaptation for your car? Could you give me the link, please? 🙏🏻
In state of FL it’s illegal to drive with just any kind of hand controls & if your not certified driver & if the cops pull you over they can make sure your licenses is taken away cause your disabled.....But able body people can drive without no issues without Psychology Test.
Hi Omar, That's a great question. If you send us an email with your question at email@nchpad.org, we can give you some one on one advice at no costs to accommodate your needs. Thanks for watching!
The Day after my birthday, I had an accident, which I was the cause o f. I totaled my 2001 Saturn Coupe. I had it for 15 years. It was a three door. It was so nice to have because I could get my wheelchair in and out so easily.
Thanks Mary you taught me alot here l am nervous cause l wanna get my license,a 🚗 and one that will suit my 👪 and l, l am unable to lift my 👉 ✋ any advice.? I have a cane to 🚶.🙋
I'm just here because my family is about to purchase our first car and I fear I won't be included in picking out who will drive... because I had a stroke 11 years ago and the aftermath of it left the left part of my body paralyzed... But the rest of my body functions very well... P.S. I'm not even on a wheel chair...
Wouldn't work for me I got limb girdle muscular dystrophy I could drive you anywhere but my problems is getting out of the jeep ive got a electric wheel chair I find it also difficult '''when I go to sit in the electric wheel chair I can't see behind me properly and have missed the seat altogether a few times 'it's so embarrassing 'lying there and can't get up and have to wait on a ambulance coming to get you up 'at the moment I can't walk at all very well I rely on my wheel chair 100 per cent 'and I'll tell you it can be a challenge some days 'when you have to go to the toilet for example 'it's a very slow process 'although I'm getting a wash dry toilet and putting in a wet room all this costs money the wet room is 7250 that includes the wash dry toilet 'the toilet on its own is 3250 'but it's money well spent never have to clean your butt again never need toilet paper again 'this toilet washes you with warm water and the jets of warm water can be turned up or down then the hot air blows you completely dry 'I would advise anyone who has difficulty with the toilet '''to get one of these they are brilliant
Isn't it hard to find a suitable parking spot that has enough space to fit the Wheelchair on the side? I mean, if other drivers park to close to your own car how is it possible to get inside again?
Nessie14j If someone parks too close to you, you will have to ask someone else to back you vehicle out so you can transfer into your vehicle. Simple but unpleasant and degrading as well.
I went for my driver's license in Richmond B.C. Jan 29 at 4:30 and my driving instructor a Chinese man I had to argue for 10 minutes that my neck was broken in 1998 the discs in my neck have been welded (fixed) where I can't turn my neck to back up and this man would not believe me and for 10 minutes we argue and I show him my scares this man would not believe me at all, his manager made we move to another window and my ride was sitting right there I left richmond that day with another broken neck because this driving instructor would not believe me why did this happen
Hello Friends, I can not walk for two years, but I can not do it too expensive. I am appealing. I want to fly ahead. I want to tell you that I can not move. Let me tell me all what to do. I do not hesitate to talk, Plese is twenty years old
People, please don't hate me for this, but I've got an itch. Irony = "physical disability doesn't limit independence, and driving is quite simple" then jumps to a clip of a guy driving his car onto a sidewalk.

I always wondered how wheelchair users got in the car and drove around on their own. This is a very informative video!
Thanks for watching!

Me to physical disable but where found this or order?
How much it will cost handcontrol...
Please message our team at email@nchpad.org. We'll be happy to provide a few resources to you that can assist in finding affordable hand controls.
The motorcycle one seems like the simplest one but the coolest imagine you just replace your steering wheel with mother cycle handles
I wish they could make a wheel with paddle shifters that's just gas and break instead.
I have a mental illness can I do my driving licence and can I drive a car please let me know ??
This video is very helpful for me. How can I import a car?
God bless Mary

you can get disabled license plates and/or disabled placard
Depends on the state. In Massachusetts - NO.
