Take your time srcstc, furloughs and layoffs are going to increase through Oct. Most major airlines are down 65-75% on pilots for the first time in history over a bad flu, and the regionals which is where Swain was/is, is also in a huge layoff phase. The industry is a mess full of greedy CEO'sflying heavy big jets on short routes with less than 45% capacity and adding regional routes to cities they'd never add in normal times because theres no need for passenger service to those particular cities, wasting money. And I know recruiters for both regionals and majors, they say the industry is going to decrease in size by 40% and no more hiring (obviously), likely until after 2024 if at all, and when the furloughed pilots comeback it will be the most senior and qualified that get a call to return. Even those pilot recruiters positions are getting eliminated for the next 4 years. People thought corporate part 135 & 91 flying would pick up, well not like people thought. Only a little. I am with a fairly large charter group with 28 aircraft, 44 pilots and we are actually starting to furlough 😔

My old house looked over Lake Washington in Kenmore and every morning my family would watch the Kenmore Air seaplanes takeoff and every evening watch them land. I miss hearing the noise of the otters and beavers everyday

Seaplanes have to be my favorite type of airplane, I get fly on them when I go fly out fishing in Canada.
In currently getting my seaplane rating now. It has been amazing to do and one of the most fun things I've done as a pilot.
Just finished up my commercial rating and halfway thru my CFI academy right now. Thank you for making the videos you do! Because of your videos, I’ve grown to love aviation. Keep it up and congrats on ASES.
I ordered a video Cassette tape from Jack Browns in 99, It was so well done that after watching it multiple times over several days, I was able to fly my new on floats 2 seater ultralight airplane with absolute confidence, by the third day i was doing circular take offs, with in a week I was flying out of small tight mountain lakes. I treasure that video to this day. Canada requires no endorsement to fly floats on Ultralight aircraft to 1200lbs

Hello Mr. Martin, been hearing some of the news about likely personnel reductions at American; how are you doing? In a way, it might work out for you because I am sure older pilots may use the pandemic to accept packages to retire ‘early’, and that will hopefully open up opportunities for you when things start getting back to normal! I understand if you can’t comment on such matters, but hang in there and keep us posted!

I flew a lot of floatplanes in FSX. But I had the tool with which one could create docks to start out from. So far, MSFS has some floatplanes but no place to start from. There are no docks. I wonder if there is a tool that lets me place objects like wooden docks on lakes.

If you get all your ratings PPL, IFR, CSEL and CMEL and decided to get your seaplane ratings do you skip single-engine sea and go straight to multi-engine sea?

I wonder how someone would do with a float plane in the Bahamas. Being able to taxi high net worth clients to their yachts already at anchor in some distant bay, making essential food/parts/tools deliveries. I bet they could charge a premium. If only I could afford my license, a plane, a hangar, etc. :)

Barely enough time to qualify for rating. Renting is very difficult unless you have 200 hrs float time minimum. Insurance rates are astronomical for us mortals even if you bought your own plane.

Question, is there a difference between adding the rating to a private or commercial certificate? I’m a private pilot and want to take the course soon but if I want to do it as a summer job or something, will the add on switch over to commercial standards or would I have to retake the test once I’m commercial rated?
I know this is an extremely late reply, but in case anyone else reads this with the same question... If you get your seaplane rating as a private, then you will have to do it again for commercial. You can also you do your commercial initial training in a seaplane (although I don't recommend it for costs reasons).
For anyone who is wanting to be a CFI, I recommend waiting to get your seaplane until after you have your commercial rating. The checkride for commercial and private are essentially identical for seaplane. And if you have your commercial seaplane, then the day you become a CFI, you are automatically a seaplane instructor with zero extra training. Which is a wild concept.
For anyone concerned that I am a keyboard warrior, I am a CFI - CFI-I, and seaplane instructor.

One thing I don’t get. Why is a glassy water takeoff/landing the most dangerous? It’d seem still water and air would be slightly helpful.

I got my PPL-Sea at Como, Italy, the oldest seaplane school in the world!
When flying over the middle north of Canada and even the far north I am certain a person is far better off on a float plane. The number of lakes and rivers up there is so numerous that there would be a runway within reach almost every place a plane would be at least in the warm months. Then in winter a plane with ski's would be the way to go .
