5:37 from 15-20 million; almost half the dead civilian...... let that sink in. Whats worse, is that the second war, that number almost doubled in civilian casualties.
and then imagine the war from 1618 to 1648 had the highest number casualties compared to global population. more than ww1 and ww2 combined compared to global population at the start of ww1
i dont know about the thirty years war, but the most devestating war for the population(by percentage) were the campaigns of the Mongol empire and Genghis Khan(we could even add the deaths caused by the black death to them since they played a BIG part in spreading it, still even without that its still more devestating population wise)
A lot of the songs from this band are well known for being energetic and bombastic, however every now and then they decide to pull off these kind of songs which have more of a solemn tone... and it just works. Some of my favorites on this regard are Hearts of Iron and Angels Calling, you should definitely check them out.
These kind of songs are actually their absolute best if you ask me. A lifetime of war / En livstid i krig is my second favorite after, well, this one, The End of the War to End All Wars. This one has almost an apocalyptic tone which really fits the topic of WW1 imo.
I am telling you man, listen to Sabatons "Winged Hussars", that song would have you climbing the effin' walls with your teeth.. SO much METAL!!.. Also, as a swede i will say that these guys are the biggest and best musical export to come out of sweden since ABBA.. ;)
Sweden got a lot of musical export these days, but I agree. Although Sabaton is growing for a completely different reason than any other band in the world.
I am a bit late to the party... But I want to point out that Sabaton is not only a great metal band but a gem to the history community (Historians and history buffs) Because other than one of their albums they take the effort to learn and display the actual history of the stories they sing. Took them I think close to 4 or 5 years to complete the album Carolus Rex.
"Ten to twenty million, over half of the dead civilian" "The end of the war to end war." knowing the history, it's bitter, isn't it? It was just the prelude to the largest war in human history. It introduced the weapons we'd use to massacre millions upon millions more, until we'd finally end the slaughter with the most destructive weapon ever developed by man. There's a reason the song is so sad. The Great War was a war over nothing, that accomplished nothing, and set the stage for everything to follow it.
Their new guitar player Tommy, has had his own band for awhile that just got renamed basically. He sings. Well. Majestica - Above the Sky. You should check it out
Good stuff...their material is in the vein of Iron Maiden and Running Wild in that the gist of some "history" telling. History is some "ready made" subject material (and some fans may actually learn something by listening to it lol). World War One absolutely earns the title "The War to End All Wars." It's when war-fighting tactics learned some hard lessons and finally caught up to the "Industrial Revolution" that was already decades old. The "War Pigs" who made the decisions to wage war and commanded armies found out that there's no "glory" in war whatsoever. Artillery barrages that ran into the millions of rounds fired before sending massed troops "over the top" of the trenches to be slaughtered and charge the face of hundreds of machine guns, which were being used, arguably, for the first time. So to for poison gas and flame throwers. It basically turned France into a "moonscape" of mud and death on a scale that the world had never seen before...and humanity, as it usually does, forgets history's lessons and thirty years later, did it all over again when Germany invaded Poland...followed by the attack barely two years later by the Empire of Japan on Pearl Harbor. And yet here we are again, starting with 9/11, mired in the longest war in U.S. history (apologies for my ratchet-jawing...I just wonder sometimes if mankind ISN'T really predisposed to annihilate ourselves).
Love watching your reactions, man. I just saw Sabaton over the weekend with Hammerfall in NYC...they had a giant tank, haha. Would love to see you check out DIMMU BORGIR - Gateways (LIVE - FORCES OF THE NORTHERN NIGHT). Full orchestra, choir, black metal. Amazing.
Another recommendation and, ooohhhhh booooy, you will be fn blown away. Check the videos from the Sabaton show at this year's Wacken festival. They played on both main stages at the same time...and trust me, it's definitely worth a shot (still getting heavy chills down my spine reminding that night)
A hidden meaning to this song as well? The beginning is set the way it is to represent how it's taught in history books. All quiet, one man dies. World in flames.
Honestly what makes WW1 depressing...Other then so many dead for no reason and the future of such brutal warfare it all started with one guy dying...15-20 Milion dead because one guy got shot
@@Batcena Well, it's not really with just 1 man dying. The war actually started a whole month later. It was just tensions rising for years between the powers. Than the serbs wanted war.
@@6th_Army and that there were three separate wars prior to ww1 that were the prelude to that war and that the tensions were building to a point that one thing can trigger a world war.

Great videos, love what you're doing. But i must say, i can´t believe you haven´t done Sabaton - Primo Victoria, it WILL blow you away. Keep up the great work
Get better soon, Heath. Whenever you want another 80's band, try Angra Carry On. Sort of halfway between Maiden and Manowar. André Matos, the singer, died this year and kind of left brazilian metal orfan.
