Secondly I can't say I'm surprised. Square Enix after final fantasy 14 kept trying to make all these live services that have failed tremendously. Remember Babylon's Fall or what about Marvels Avengers?
Square Enix also tried to jump on the NFT bandwagon. Hopefully their upcoming Visions of Mana game is good but only time will tell.

I got to work for Square Enix for a bit. It was a nice experience.
I've been saying this since huge budget AAA games started taking over gaming in the PS360 era. If AAA development costs continue to skyrocket, and dev cycles keep getting longer, at some point companies arent going to be able to make money on those games. You can't keep investing unimaginable resources into releasing one or two major games every 5 years and hoping those games sell gangbusters when they finally come out. It's just not a sustainable business model.
This is a shame to hear since I've been playing several new 2024 releases and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is game of the year so far. Of the 2024 games I've played AND completed their story modes (in order from greatest to worse, all 2024 new releases):
1) Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (this game is AMAZING)
2) Stellar Blade (this is a game of the year contender, it's awesome)
3) Rise of the Ronin (I greatly enjoyed this game. Only knock against it is that I wish the graphics were a little better, but overall the game is very good)
4) Dragon's Dogma 2 (This game is awesome. Only knock against it are the fast travel restrictions combined with how long it takes to get to certain restrictions. It's a nightmare trying to go back and forth between Bakbattahl and the Elf village on foot. Also, the game can get VERY sadistic towards the player over how vague certain things are during certain quests. But overall, it's really a great game).
5) Princess Peach: Showtime (it's silly, but it is fun).
6) Foamstars (it doesn't play like Splatoon, it plays more like an old school wave based, single area shooter during the single player story missions. Some of the characters are MUCH better than others. For example, I really like Soa, the pink haired girl, since her super moves are cool and I like her character and back story. On the flip side, I think Rave Breaker is a horrible character and has a horrid back story. Enjoyment depends on which character and which back story you sit through. Overall, I really enjoy 80% of the game. Chloe Noir is the best character, she's awesome).
7) Mixture on PSVR2. I like this game, but it has problems. The throwing mechanic in this game sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. This game needs patches, but it is fun. If they patch the game it would rank much higher.
8) Happy FunLand on PSVR2. This is a BAD game. But it falls into the "It's so bad, it's good" category. The game is glitched up, it will give you motion sickness at times, it's REALLY glitched up, but it has a "Dark Disney World" vibe to it which can be hilarious at times. The game needs another two years of development (they need about 200 GB of patches to fix this broken game. LOL) but it can be fun if you want a "Dark Disney" experience. It's kind of worth it just for that. Just don't be surprised when the motion sickness kicks in while your arm is glitching through a wall.
9) Epstein on Steam. It was only $4. I want my $4 back!!! I only bought it because everyone was screaming about how horrible this game was and I saw it was only $4 so I got curious and wanted to see if it was really as horrid as everyone claimed. Yeah, that was a terrible life choice. LOL. Not all indie games are good. Epstein is freaking horrible. Yeah, it's only $4, but it's $3.99 overpriced.
I think they just noticed their Mobile game service units are making more money than their console business unit that adhere to ESG.

CD Projekt Red has been open about embracing DEI and it will be interesting to see what happens with Witcher 4 and if there is any backlash surrounding that. There's also Insomniac Games that has their upcoming Wolverine game and has had Kim Bellair of SBI do consulting work for them on the game. Will be interesting to see if there's backlash surrounding that game as well when it comes out.
It's not lucrative now because the fanbase has list belief in Square. Being Exclusive has nothing to do with it. Honestly people trip over games Being Exclusive WAY too much
This is what happens when you split up a MASSIVE REMAKE in 3 separate games years apart from each other and expect them to sell as well as new games.
Yup they should have seen that coming. Hitman series one. did the same thing. Ever part get less money. Till the next game came out. Then a big chunk of the fans came back to play the rest of 1.
Thats wild. FF7 Rebirth sold 325k in two weeks. In comparison Eiyudan Chronicles sold 100k+ first two weeks and that was a success.
Stellar Blade Sold 60k. It sold like a giant wet fart

This is the tip of the iceberg of things to come. It doesnt take a genius to do the math... If you pay for gamepass or ps+ you get more games than youll ever have time to play. At the same time the big boys increase the standard price for a game close to 100 coins. I say, it takes one flawless diamond of a game to be in the league of for example gtav.. Who buys the lesser games? No wonder Microsoft's AAA empire is crumbling too since they compete internally for the money of the masses. Hopefully we learn to see indie games as the new normal when all the gargantuan gaming studios fall. Inflation is the beginning of next gen gaming.

I haven't liked anything Playstation since the PSP and the PS2.
One of the main reasons is why Square Enix is in hot mess, is the underperformance of FF7 Rebirth. According to what my friend shown me, he did a bit research and FF7 Rebirth's launch sales were disasterous. 265k Units. Worse than FF XVI and even worse than Lightning Returns.
And let us not forget about the wasted money into Marvel's Avengers, Forspoken and of course...their involvement and investment into NFTs.
Square Enix stopped making games that were expressly Japanese. That's what made them great. When they began wanting to appeal to a mostly western audience they lost what made them charming.
