- What happens when you have a couple of flyers--arrows that don't quite shoot as well as the others? How can I turn them into shooters? Well, I "nock tuned" them, and we'll see if works!
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it and I aim to help you love it, too!

Bunjie (The O.B.) is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After more than a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels, woodchucks, and even a bear, Bunjie is now semi-retired. Enter Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0, The Slick Black Cadillac of Crossbows) a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker 420, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, a gift from a Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Bunjie III is a testament to modern crossbows, producing over .7 slugs of momentum and almost 140 ft-lbs of kinetic energy with stock arrows--at nearly 400 fps!
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. This crossbow was also a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of our story as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow (see our 2020 Maryland Doe Hunt).
Again, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
All Hail Bunjie!

That’s awesome you had 45 call in. Good for you, Never let up on your beliefs.
Rich I can't tell you how refreshing it is to hear a guy that's running for office talk about preserving our outdoor heritage.
It's also really cool to see your method on tuning the arrows.
I've just started getting my crossbow sighted in.
I've got some fixed G5 4 bladers that I'm trying out this year and for the first time I'm using some lighted nocks.
Thanks for sharing.
Rich. Most arrow manufacturers install the logo sticker in a specific alignment. You will find that the portion of the sticker that tells the grains per inch is always lined up with the weld spine on the arrow. And yes, even carbon arrows have a weld spine. So first, confirm that this is true with your arrows by looking in the nock end of the shaft for the spot where the carbon sheet overlaps (it's easy to see) then line your cock vane up with that. It works every time. It's amazing how many lifelong archers don't know this. Just an easy way to get it right every time the first time.
Thank you. Makes sense. I do recall that with my PSE bow. I always fleshed my own arrows. Shooting a crossbow now. But I had a hiatus in between then and now. Seems I forgot some stuff 🤷
Me and my brother-in-law was mowing down our hunting property today can't wait for the crossbow season
I just bought my first crossbow, and like everyone thing else, I hit youtube up looking for info. Came across your channel, and now I can't stop watching. Great content! You have a new subscriber!
Thanks!
Welcome aboard! Thanks!
That is some great info on how to tune your arrows! It's good to see Bunjie flinging arrows again!
I can already tell that this is going to be a great crossbow application month, keep up the awesome videos!
Rich, thanks for taking the time to do videos. We know you are a busy man. I look forward to everyone of your videos.
God bless you brother.
I love putting the yellow , green and orange vanes on my hunting arrows . Nice camo !!!
I hope you win Richard, thanks for everything you do!
We need people in our local governments like you. I'm in Pennsylvania, but not in your county, if I were, you could count on my vote!
That's great work on those arrows. #45
T R U M P. Heck yeah. 2024. Let's go brandon
I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. Thank you, Rich.
Excellent lesson Rich. 👌👌 love your teaching style. More please. Keepem comin 💪💪💪💪 cheers Ken
Very nice video. Good work on figuring out those arrows!
I really enjoyed the footwear trilogy! 😅 Great video as always!
Footwear Trilogy LOL
Great video. This is the stuff you have to do sometimes to get some good flyers. I do the same and also swap fixed broadheads around to to get good flyers too. And good to number them
Great job Rich, and so I'm thinking that the Rich Wilson campaign badges will become a collectors item in PA for sure! Hey not since Teddy Roosevelt has there been a serious hunting President! Our 26th President was a hunting addict like us!
I understand about things matching. I like all of my arrows to be “matchy matchy” too!
Yeah, it drives me nuts if they don't all fly the same, at least these days it does
EXCELLENT!
I love when a plan comes together.
Good video love you shooting bunjie!
Rich would love to see voice some support for Sunday hunting. Not sure if you work closely with any representatives but Sunday hunting is great for hunter and the sport
Rich, why don’t you shoot from the deck with stairs directly to the back yard?
Poor man's spine indexing 😉
Which I'm not ashamed to admit have done many times myself.
Great video for most newbies to see 👍
I buy spine indexed arrows now, and forego this process.
I have a spine indexer that I've been playing around with, probably have a video of that coming soon also
Vane tuning is important. With carbons you can get some faulty shafts where they will not fly like the rest. Thats one thing i love about aluminum and full shafts you can remove defects and have a solid weld line thats easy to find and cock vane.
For carbons you really do want to have a spine tester to find the stiff side to cock vane. But even that is not necessarily a guarantee to be a good shaft. It all depends on the process of how it was made.
you can see the weld line in carbon arrows just as easy.
@@briargoatkilla that depends on the carbon most are seamless. Which is actually done by making many seams. I do not know how zombie slayers look but every carbon i saw were all seamless. You would need to either spine test or constantly vane tune which can get very expensive.
@@chrisruzsa2798 not my experience at all. i can show you the seam in any arrow you hand me in one second.
@@briargoatkilla old easton fire bolts, sharrow bolts on amazon, gold tip carbon, fire bolts and or any seamless style. I know what you are talking about but not all have it. Even the dark line on aluminium shafts is not always the true seam/ weld line. You have to bend test or flex test to make sure its stiff.
Great video! The process we all go through, but at least it is a one time thing.
One aside; as someone who weedeats barefoot(not recommended), the shoes on the back porch felt a little OCD. :)
Great Video!
For Better groups , you have to spine match the arrows with PAPS from Firenock
I stopped using carbon arrows years ago because of switching to traditional style heads and having to deal with weak side stiff side on carbons. Strangely enough, even aluminum arrows can fly differently with traditional broadheads. I shoot field points of different weights with lighted nock to see which weight has the best flight and then shoot different arrows with broadheads to see which ones hit closest to the field point. Then I shoot the broadheads to see which ones shoot closest to EACH OTHER. Then I choose a NUMBER ONE ARROW and sight in for that specific broadhead and arrow and place it in the number one spot in my quiver. Number two arrow shoots the closest to number one arrow and gets the 2nd spot in the quiver and so on.
Not a bad strategy! Hopefully, by the time the season comes around, however, I have a dozen arrows that all shoot the same. Those swa-hackers shoot the same as field points, so I just rotate back and forth between points.
So cool President Trump called into the rally. Glad you're having fun with these videos (I know we have fun watching them). Thanks for trying trying so hard to make your hometown a better place to live.
💪 nice video
They are called Bolts
😄
For some reason I enjoyed the "changing of footwear" section of this video...
😆
Always nock tune your arrows. Been doing it for years.
good morning
Thinking about knock tuning my self but I'll need some new arrows ten point required alpha knocks only and my Courant arrows knocks will not move
Great video. I notice you fletch the arrows with the nock removed..what kind of jig allows you to do that?
Thanks for xbow appreciation week. I learn so much from you and enjoy both of your books.
It's in Easton EZ Fletch jig, make sure you get the right diameter for your arrows of course
Thanks🙂
Heya Bunjie quick question:
I’m using a Tenpoint Stealth 450 and I’m wondering due to its speed would I be better with 125 grain vs 100?
I would think the 125 or even a 150 would do great on that, you got plenty of room for it LOL
Very nice. I have a Axiom I got about 10 years ago. Killed alot of deer with it. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
Also my xbow and my compound u shud be practicing to 100 yards it makes the 20 through 60 yards a chip shot!
Also when u use a open on contact broadheads u lose 40% of energy hitting the deer or whatever. Food for thought! I went to fixed never looked back!
But with crossbows, there is so much extra energy that really doesn't matter as much. At least with modern crossbows. With this old, slow crossbow, I just use a heavier arrow, 563 grains total arrow weight, which gives me nearly .7 slugs of momentum, which has proved enough to go through deer and bear and hogs! And that's with a 3 in swahacker broadhead!
Industry standard is 45-50 ft/lbs of kinetic energy minimum to use mechanicals on deer size game. Using mechanicals out of crossbow is an absolute non issue.
@jenniferrobinson5813 you guys are missing the point 👉... u lose kinetic energy with a mechanical broadhead! Listen ppl think they no it all and don't want to listen.... I been hunting since diapers lol and I am apart of deer search and united blood trackers. I eat and sleep and die deer hunting! 🦌 take my word for it I don't care either way... lol 😆 🤣 😂 😆 🤣 amd I would be worried if I payed for bolts from wyvern creations and u have to do that much work to get them to group!
Not sure I could make it All the way through this video, what's up the air conditioner. Thanks man
Without the air conditioner. Sorry for the bad word recognition. But thanks for the video Jim, just goofing, I know your name is not Jim. Not sure why I called you that last time, strike it up to age. All right Kevin, and thanks.
Lolol, goofen, thanks Rich.😊
Do you notice any change in impact point shooting on that down slope compared to flat ground ? I don't know if any corrective sighting is needed shooting down as opposed to flat ground. Would matter I suppose shooting longer shots from a tree stand ? I am not seeing a lot of change, wonder if you do at those longer 60 yard targets you have on that hill.
I did a video or two on that a while back. You can check those out. Really, unless you're at a really steep angle it doesn't seem to make any difference. The angle of the arrow at impact is different, but the point of impact should be the same. This scope, however, compensates for angle of declination and angle of inclination. So I really don't even think about that most of the time LOL
@@Deathbybunjie I never noticed a big difference either, but figured you have a lot more shots under the belt than me. Most of my tree stands are not some of the skyscrapers i see online, most only 15 feet or less. and no difference in impact that I can see.
Did u weigh the bolts? I've never bought anything from wyvern creations but there shouldn't be 2 arrows that are not with rest of the group... u better pay and grab the best! I've never had any issues threw Jerry and or George. I weigh em and mark the bolts!
Hey rich my crossbow is 185 pond draw do you think the victory x bolts would work for it they are 325 grians
Check the weight and length requirements for your crossbow and start there, that's probably the best answer! Good luck!
I try to always have a lot of water when I am crossbow shooting.
Oh yeah, I was out today and man I went through a lot haha
Do you know if have you noticed any difference in arrow flight of performance in using a long fletching or using the Blazer style?
There is a difference but it also depends on what you are doing. Hunting in ethical ranges you won’t notice much impact 50 yards you can start to see a difference.
I think it has a lot to do with the speed of the crossbow, this Old Slow crossbow shoots just about anything fine, but likes these Blazers from what I can tell. With the faster crossbow, it's a little more finicky. Blazers with a little bit of offset. I Shoot the same thing out of Bungie just to make sure I don't have to change my Fletching jig haha
Good morning Rich. I got a question. Do you think that shooting heavy arrows wears the string out faster? My crossbow is rated for 400fps and I originally started shooting a 454 grain arrow and everything seemed fine until I went up to 479. And now after a few shots, the serving is starting to separate. I would like to know your thoughts on this. Thanks for the video buddy.
You know, that's possible, because of inertia. An object at rest tends to stay at rest, so a heavier Arrow takes more energy to get it going. It's possible that that gives the crossbow more time to wear on that serving, especially with those crossbows that have a steeper angle of the string. I wonder!
One might think spine testing would resolve the best cock feather position. So if “nock tuning” as you are doing here you could shoot them thru paper at 5-7 yards. Rotate until shooting a perfect hole. No need to shoot 50 yards but if you are good enough to hold without flinching your method is more fun. Lol
You need a rideing mower
what phone are you using?
Samsung s 22
You have to put the work in to achieve good results hunting season is not the time to find out you have a problem 😂
Indeed!
This is way I shoot Aluminum!
Aluminum is OK, but you get some hard impacts for aluminum and you can easily bend an arrow
Aluminum is great until it bends LOL
What in the world why are you using such a heavy arrow 560 grain mind are 375 grain Diablo 18" 350 grain with 125 grain tip getting 280 fps Excalibur Grizzly
Old slow crossbows need a heavier arrow to get penetration.
I want hard hitting accuracy lol
The best kind LOL
Wow President Trump called that’s awesome.
Trump2024!!!!!!!!
Well the first thing you can do is to call them by the correct name. If you want to be a crossbow hunter than be a crossbow hunter. But if you want to use arrows go get a real traditional bow and some arrows. And take your skills to a greater level.
🤣
