That's just part of what makes it depressing.
Funfact: Gosling and Williams were unaware of the talent they were going to do for this scene. So they're genuinely surprised to find that Gosling can play/sing and Williams can tap dance. This is why the scene feels 'awkward' but that's absolutely the point. Real dates do not go as smoothly as a traditional movie script, it's a lot of shy breaks and sudden stops, sheepish banter and flirty glances. This movie in general, let alone this one scene, is far more connected to us than your run-of-the-mill Romantic Comedy because of the director's decision to have a very spartan script. Instead of given them lines, he gave them actions. He would secretly tell Ryan "Make her talk to you" while telling Michelle "Get out of the house" which results in a very natural and realistic story.

I think the most depressing aspect of this movie is not the fights or the breakup, instead it is the reality that a couple can fall in love and later the same couple can also fall out of love really hard. This kind of movie can make you be more aware of the reality of a relationship, as it is not always as beautiful as you initially thought. However this kind of movie can also lead you to an entirely different direction, making you skeptic of the possibility of goodness in a relationship.

To me the movie is more about forcing love under situational circumstances and unknowingly perpetuating a cycle of trauma more so than it is simply falling out of love. Towards the beginning of the movie, her grandma tells her that you have to choose the people you love wisely, and not to tolerate disrespect. With Bobby, you see her tolerating someone who doesn’t really respect her. He calls her weird, is absolutely controlling, and appears to love bomb her. She later breaks up with him for Dean who has similar characteristics that she overlooks because he’s exciting and persistent. Ultimately in real life they would’ve dated a couple months, and she would’ve returned to Bobby. She only stays with Dean because of her decision to keep her child. Likely the same situation her mom was put in but regardless of who she ended up with the signs where there to show that she would not have chosen the right partner because it’s all she knew growing up.

Well... He does it pretty good, man. I mean, the original is good, but Gosling really does do something original to it that is really fun and good. So, you can't take that away from him. I always like it when someone does a cover of a song and they really make it their own with their own arrangement and everything.. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's usually pretty special.

I caught myself thinking "this movie was so cute" before I saw the flash of the next scene at the end and remembered "oh yeah, this movie's heartbreaking." But I think that's the point this movie's trying to make about relationships that don't work. Everything's better in hindsight. Everything was easier back when things were fun and flighty and before shit got real. And if you try so, so hard to make things like they were before, even though they can never be what they were before, you won't succeed. You'll make things worse. You'll just hurt the ones you love.

there is something about this scene. i get reminded of it every once in a while and i come back to it. and i cry. every time. i honestly don’t known why, there is something about it that just unlocks something in me. maybe it is the simplicity about it, maybe it is her dancing, maybe it is the song. maybe it’s all of the above. i do consider this to be one of the best scenes in cinema.

I love this movie, the whole thing is like a sweet gentle heart break that lingers in your mind. This is one of the most romantic scenes in the movie but the song he chose to sing was a sad one, quite a bit of foreshadowing in my opinion. Such a perfect scene, beautiful and sad just like the movie.
