I saw him play in Charleston, SC with Duncan Trussell. He opened with this bit and it flat lined. I think was the only person in the crowd laughing hysterically. Everyone else was looking at each other like wtf is going on. I guess you have to know him (sort of, through podcasts and other comedy ventures) to get the joke. But I loved it. He was great. I think this was in 2014.
Johnny!JOHNNY! your awesome man,I love your podcasts too,The ones with Duncan and shane mauss are my favs,,,I love blair too,,,need more though.........
I prefer Kyle's style of mixing childlike slur talk into his clearly articulated speech. He doesn't rely as heavily on it as the Pemberton character does. Also Mooney's stand up character Bruce Chandling is a failure as a conventional comedian which is the point. It's funny because he's awkward and "dying" on stage in the tradition of Andy Kaufman. The Pemberton character is obviously successful in his conventional stand-up routine endeavor despite his apparent incoherence. So the joke here is that we can't understand what is clearly supposed to be "A" material comedy. It's like we're missing out on the the jokes... and *that* is the joke. Also, the successful landing of utterly incoherent jokes as indicated by the persistent audience laughter has a certain sort of absurd surreal quality which is itself amusing.
Gustavo Wegas It's gibberish in the cadence of a comic act. The joke is that all American comics sound the same. It's not funny to English speaking people either.
It's just making fun of bad standup and generic patrons of comedy clubs, the long-winded dark humor kept going though and there was nothing new, didn't need that for 6 minutes.
Pemberton nailed this, but the crowd also played it perfectly.
this script must have been quite something
Joseph Johnston the script must have been nothing
its the unsung hero in te editors room that makes this shit funny
