I grew up in Doveton and Dandenong - went to Dandy High in the 90's... I used to walk home from Dandy station home to Doveton at night, as a young teenager - I learnt to be stealth! I came from shit home life - both parents always in trouble with the cops, in and out of jail for my mum... but I kept to myself, head down, and worked my arse off to get out of the cycle of poverty, and I did but it took hard work to prove I was not a product of my environment. Growing up in these suburbs teaches you to be resilient and you never forget where you come from, and pushes you to work harder to ensure you never return. It’s actually so great to see people like the Gym Owner and the Aboriginal Community Centre give these kids from disadvantaged areas a positive place to connect and grow. And honestly, the people in the video seemed really nice. Says a lot about Melbourne when even the quote on quote most dangerous hood has a lot of smiling faces.
Yeah they just say that shit for clicks. I grew up in Dandenong and was always told how bad it was and people thought I was stabbed and shot. It was bad but never as bad as what people say.
I love that the locals are given a chance to share their perspectives on their hood. The sense of community and multicultural respect really came through in this video.
You find in the hoods some of the best people on the planet. They’ve lived a hard life and went through so much in their lives that they are respectful and don’t judge people on face value but look for trouble and you can find it very easily. The togetherness in rough communities is second to none.
I really respect you showing the humanity of the people who have grown up the hardest. It’s so important for people to understand and not judge fellow humans who have had extremely different experiences in life. 🙏🏻
@@davidl3864 uneducated, ignorant comments like this are the exact point of my comment. You have NO IDEA what traumas people have been through, especially within a family unit, the only home a child has. You also clearly have no idea of the affects this has on the mental health and the experiences other people deal with. People don’t want to be in a cycle of suffering. It’s exactly this kind of judgement that makes change seem impossible.
seeing all these hood video makes me appreciate my strict parent for never getting into any hood shit when i was younger, sticking to studying sticking to being cultured i grew up in dandy and never looked back

My Cousins lived in Dandenong and I grew up in Frankston from the late 70's throught the 80's so it would be awesome to see a Frankston episode. Cheers for the work you do and the raw reality you provide to us. Just remember people, everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about, be good to each other because its too easy to judge a book by its cover.

Thanks uso for putting these out there. As a houso mishrat kid in the early 00s this was such a low area to be apart of, but you asking for stories and showing interest gives people a good look at what it was like for us! We didn’t have much but we had eacother that’s the best part of these communities! Power in numbers big ups bro
LOL 😂 Communities, We had each other LOL 😂, Strength in numbers BHAAAAAAAAAA, where do ya come up with that crap??. It’s a nightmare of a place, thieves & burglars & drug dealers & addicts in nearly every street & now the Sudanese watch gang culture grow.
I love how you always find decent blokes to talk to,just shows theres good people everywhere ❤ Just nice blokes happy to show you around and tell their stories. Its awesome to see.GOOD ONE DANDY BOYS!!! Really impressed
They are losers with no jobs, giving nothing to society and a burden. What have you been smoking. Take the cameras away and they will be pulling crimes.
I grew up in Dandenong and the street we lived in was known for Drugs…so many drug houses and cops in the street constantly, but our street had some of the nicest people too, community just trying to keep everyone safe and even try to help some of the addicts get clean and try to do better, no judgement. I’ll always have fond memories of Dandy. Being so multicultural, kind and funny people , shout out Dandy Primary School and Dandy High, the market, the weirdos and the bums outside the plaza, the hidden food spots, etc etc Dandy has character (bad and good), Dandenong represent 😆🙌🏾
Jimmy's kebabs with the 16 buck massive HSPs haha But yeah my nan lives on Menzies. Has for 60 years. Commission too. Her house is in the video but I won't say which. I also currently live in one of the bording houses in this video too. Not the one shown but the same owner and I have friends at that one. But ya dead right. Bunch of people legit banding together through rough times. Most of the people not on Ice are solid. And nearly all of the weed smokers are chill. Even that guy who asked for a light. He's a character. He was born in the south of America during Segregation. Like Lousisiana/New Orleans He is disabled and lives at an assisted living place on the street they walked down. He actually smokes weed like a MFer and everytime he sees me asks if I got some. I occasionally roll a joint and chill with him. He's a super nice guy. His name is Flowers lol He's seen a whole other world to us man. He talk about Dandenong like its paradise compared to where he come from.
Yes I grew up in Dandenong until the age of 19 and then I moved to Murrumbeena but I have fun memories like all the the 80s pretty safe lower middle class no dramas I knew that Dustin's always had a bad reputation but you know generally it's pretty good I felt always safe
good video spanian. fw you now heavy. shedding light on melbourne's real problems! it's not "the world's most liveable city." and this video is honestly... bitter sweet.
Love the aussie bro in the red shirt/black hat, full admitting he's an ice addict. A lot of folks would deny it and hide their habits but not this guy. Even calling himself dandys biggest junkie. Hes a real G for admitting his truths and acknowledging his addiction. Hope you get clean one day bro i hope next time I see you you're doing a lot better 🙏
Me too. I respect that he told it like it is. And I thought it was really sad that he's walking alongside the guy in th eyellow jumper who was saying he fully hates addicts, kick them in the head when the OD. Then gets into a lamborghni which was probably not purchased with the proceeds of honest employment. .
I love having the locals involved And I love how dude giving the tour talking about drugs and stabbing is making sure he has his 1ltr of coconut water with him !!! ❤😂
Been working in dandy, coming up to 10 years now, in DCJS. Know all the areas you're in well. Glad the lads took you down potter street and out the back of robinson st. I could work my whole career in those streets and never make a dent. Was working the day you were down too, spewing i didnt see you. Love the content
I live In Dandenong and want to make it clear this is a very small minority of Dandenong. As all suburbs there is a “good” side and a “bad” side and the “good” side takes over the “bad” side, it is cleaned up massively. But I’ve only been here a couple of years.
Yeah I worked in Dandenong for 10 year and took the train everyday. It's not the best suburb but really it's not as bad as people make it out to be. If you want to stay out of trouble, it's not hard to do.
As someone that lives in Doveton, honestly the junkies/eshays and other ghetto people usually won’t bother u. So really u should just ignore them. But the ones that do r usually the ones that think they’re gangsters
Dandy in the 70's up near the train station wasn't a nice place to be. Walting Matilda pub was a nasty place and the underpass to get to the platforms were the real bronx, bashings, robberies, rapes, etc. As the old houses get knocked down and replaced it's starting to look a lot more better.
Were you there when the old Walting Matilda pub and the underpass near Dandy station were there. That place was BAAAD then, the underpass used to have so many bashings, robberies and rapes. They had to clean that place up.
Brah Spanian spinnin about Myki cards is mad funny 😂 he's not wrong tho fkn hell, feel like the ticket/myki inspectors are hated more than the feds in Melb, everyone fkn hates them not just the ppl from the hoods 💀

This was a really good episode, ay👏 really showed the community and the spirit within it. From the people who live there to the town and people within the community making a difference. Top work as always 👏 👌 👍
Lol, I grew up in Dandenong. Thanks Spanian, I'm looking forward to seeing it through your eyes ❤️ Wow, my Nan lived in Menzies ave, I grew up right on the creek in Dandenong. The Myuna farm was across the creek from me, and where I kept my first horse 😍 When we were kids, our friend found the evidence that put Mr baldy away. A briefcase on the side of the road. So many memories walking down those roads, I'm blown away! So different, but still the same. Shout out to all the Dandy kids of the 70's and 80's. Love from beautiful Tasmania ❤️❤️
Doveton was so different back in the 70's and 80's. Changing so much now, the old houses are being knocked down. Looking better bit by bit but erasing the memories of old neighbours that used to live there. I found out a few years back where Mr Baldy lived, Ti Tree Drive in Doveton, I used to walk past his house in the 70's, dam I shudder to think how close I possibly came to being a victim of his.......
@@Foxhound1Nine Dandenong commission area was ok back in the 70's, Nan had no issues in Menzies Ave except the "language" (Nan didn't swear at all) Doveton was a little more hectic, and yes, some creeps were about. I'm also grateful I had no run ins, but this creep was stealing children. As children, my five siblings and I were isolated and mostly ignorant of the real world, our parents sheltered us from social interaction 🤔 we were actually frightened of most people tbh. All of those times are long gone, good and bad. It's great to gtfo of Victoria 💙
You buy the myki card, put some money on it and then you get charged by the zones. So Dandenong is zones 1 & 2. Full fare is probably about $5 or more. Also if you tap on and then tap off under 15 minutes, you don't get charged for that trip. You can also add that card to your phone wallet so you can tap on that way if that helps.
OMG wow... Unbelievable the smile u brought 2 those boys / girls faces when they saw u coming into the area and acknowledging their world..!!! That brought a tear 2 my eye and made me realise how fuken important your utube docos are and the positivity that is going on here and there wherever u are
Thanks for giving Dande some attention bro. Grew up there in the 90s. You should have gone to the Plaza, earlier known as the Capital Centre. Anyone remember Pacific!?
As do I. The lesson here is that if you want respect from society, you need to become an unrepentant violent criminal, do your time in prison and then build up your social profile and following by telling stories about how you terrorised innocent people. Un-ironically I have more respect for Spanian than I do towards those who arrested him.
@@Dave-ss5pk In an ideal world a person who puts their life on the line in serving their country should be respected more than anyone. Boxing & mma is great for boys to start while young! It builds strength, character, confidence, discipline, and lots more. Good to see young boys enjoying themselves & working hard!
I was born and raised in Dandy first half of my life. If I had not relocated, Interstate as a teenager, I definitely would have been in and out of prison with out a doubt and hitting rock bottom for sure. I can't say it's the best place in Melbourne, but it definitely made me the humble person I am today. Remember guys never forget where you came from! 🙌
I also did a short stint in dandy, not as long others, like 6-12 months or something so didn't get the full,,,, ummm,, experience and guess im still kinda an outsider, but at the time i was probably about, 11 or 12 or something and it was long enough for me.
South Melbourne and Port Melbourne, in particular Garden City had mad crews in those days too. The Oakleigh W@&$ too. Times have changed. Everyone respected 3174 & 3175 in those days though.
It's like that in most former places like Dandenong. Nothing comes close to the 1980's & 90's, everywhere it was pumping. Plenty work of all sorts, earning was easier, lots of cash everywhere as everything was cash based, les coppers, less technology, no camera's & CCTV everywhere, less alarms & security, less restrictive laws, people punched on instead of stab or shoot, there was still a criminal code of ethics that every crim learnt first & then lived by. Crews stuck solid & could trust each other, & had each other's back without saying. There was no crack or bupe back then , that makes shells of former good men like today. It was a different time & completely different men back then. Now the ice & bupe epidemic & it's mental health partner have pervaded all aspects of community, society, humanity & life. Now it seems that everywhere you look we are dealing with & nursing some spinner in psychosis or a crackhead who think's he's God or some devil, a good earn today is sneako - ing an old lady & snatching her handbag or Peter thieving from your best mate, or back door him😳. Or bashing your missus or mother, these crimes are sweet today, & even a putrid teller or scotcher is ok if he's whacking up!!. Still in the 70's, 80's & 90's that sort of shit did not fly , the shit men were found out quickly & the rest left were all good solid men, most of the time!. A gangster was a gentleman, not a crack head or hard talking face tattooed 40 kg skeleton who walks with a bigger bridge than Sydney Harbour bridge & tells the whole world how he has killed a hundred people & bashed everyone from Mike Tyson to every champion in every field , he has got them all😂. That's today, compared to the 80's & 90's, different world & different people!!. Them two decades were definitely the last of the Mohicans, shout out to all the boys who run in the 80's & 90's👍❤️.
One of the best hood videos I have seen, the community spirit here was insane, everyone literally knew everyone and the boxing gym wow cool spot ! The pride this episode showed was truely awesome ❤💪🏽

Is someone from Dande gonna tell him that they don’t even get down like that 😂😂😂, Never seen so many tryhard in one video LMAO. Spanian brother Dandenong don’t ever get down like that ever , It’s only because you are there.
The south east has some of the most affluent suburbs in Melbourne. ETA: sorry about Myki. It’s the pits. ETA 2: just finished watching. That was fascinating. Thanks to the guys who were so informative bout the history of the area. It’s a shame manufacturing died out. You mentioned Sunshine and Broadmeadows. They would be interesting places for you to visit, too, imho. Wishing you all the best.
Wow, great video, Spanian; as a child of Dandy North in the ''80s/'90s, I was happy to revisit your video, but at the same time, sad as this is now worse than it used to be. However blessed to come from an area that gave me the smarts and a "peoples" person based on the characters, ethnic groups i was exposed and friends with.
Not even close brother. Spanian is lucky it is 2024 and he was walking with a large group. You couldn't walk the streets of Dandenong along between the years 2000-2010. Especially at the station.
Some of the boys you met seem really decent….shame no one gets to see the good side of these boys ❤ thank you so much for a great view point I lived and played sport in these very areas and had NO idea what was going on….you have a new fan 🏆❤️🏆
I live in a very quiet street in the leafy inner city suburbs where nothing happens. $1million + houses. The kind of street where I’m not even overly concerned about locking the car or doors. Can leave things of value out in the garden. About 3 months ago a family moved onto the street into what turns out to be a housing commission house. Music blasting at all house. Fighting. Police have raided the house 3 times. Ambulances. Doors off the hinges already. Litter now everywhere on the street. Just not a good situation. It’s crazy how even one household can completely alter the dynamic of an area and make life way more stressful than it needs to be. Respect to anyone that manages to rise and get out of situations where in some cases every house in their entire suburb is as bad as just one example I’ve encountered because that is a tough life when it’s all that you know.

Your mistake was visiting Dandenong on a Wednesday. If you want to see the true colours of Dandenong, you visit on Tues, Fri, Sat or Sunday. Market days is when the ethnic diversity and richness of the community is on display. Plus, you missed the best hot jam donuts in the world. Someone should do a foodie tour of Dandenong. So much gold just in that area between the station and the market. You walked up from the station through little India, but missed little Afghanistan. I went to Dandy West Primary and Dandy High in the 90s and early 2000s and it was a dangerous place to live, no doubt. Raised by a white aussie single mum in housing commission who was raised by a white aussie single mum in housing commission. Loved growing up in a cultural hotpot. Nothing can match the resilience, ingenuity and work ethic of an immigrant in Dandenong. Great to see Fred out the front of his family's shop on Menzies. Big love to 3175.
is that a good thing or bad thing? i know of and hear about gangs and know about a lot of gangs in and around victoria. the diversity and richness idk man i hear a lot of sudanese, african, afghan, syrian, some islanders going around assaulting, 'drilling', stabbings stuff like that

Those brick homes are really nice for govt homes. They have front and back yards, running water etc...in Canada where i live, many First nations still live in squalor, with water that makes them sick, no infrastructure for the kids to be healthy. I hope these Aussies know how good they have it even though its the hood.
We know how lucky we are that's why in Aussie society we dunk on old mates who don't pay taxes it's seen as unmanly you can't pay any money for better roads, parks, schools and helping bush fire animals that got burnt not saying it's good system but it mostly holds together it seems like tax dollars are being misappropriated more in other countries definitely still happens in Aus though aswell
I grew up in Dandenong. I never saw it as a bad neighbourhood nor did it feel like that. There was always gangs and stuff but if you stay out of it you’d be okay most the times. It’s kinda safe and good place to live in. Great video and perspective for those who don’t live here but again, it’s not as bad as Sydney for example it’s a good place with good people. Thanks for the entertaining content bro!
I grew up in Dandy North as well. I am the same, I have never seen Dandy as a bad neighborhood. It's all about just minding your own business and never got hassled. My mum lives in Dandy North still but I never have a problem with Dandy
Same as Frankston. You gotta know when you're better off not being mouthy and when it's sometimes better to stay outta sight, but generally speaking you've gotta be pretty unlucky to really get into trouble. Still though, I just assumed everyone had been in organised fights (get the trolley poles out) and was a bit surprised when I made friends from the North and learned that some people just dodged all of that growing up.
Sounds similar to Canadian cities. Sure, some neighborhoods are notorious for being underdeveloped, areas with affordable housing, or aging homes tend to be a little rougher due to the demographic that stays there. (Eventually cleaning up when prices get to the point where developing is super affordable, which attracts more money) There's a good universal rule to remember... Keep it moving if you don't belong there, get to where your going, an keep your head on a swivel. Mind your business and you'll be fine. You can't be a victim of any sort of violence if no one is around or gets the chance to get close to you.
I lived in Melbourne for a couple of years and did wrestling training in Frankston, I use to get off at Dandenong station and bus it to Frankston and honestly felt heaps safer in Dandenong over anywhere in Frankston, never had an issue there and have honestly seen more in my home town of Lavington over Dandenong but that's just me who knows maybe if I walked to far from Dandenongs CBD I would of gotten rolled but at the station and the shopping centre Dandenong was lovely and met heaps of Lovley people there, always felt like home
As a Melbournian that grew up in Frankston, starting in Dandenong was the right choice, either that or inner northern suburbs of Melbourne. 15 -20 years ago I would definitely say the pines (Frankston north) and west park (hastings) both public housing estates, both were wild back in the day lmao
@@frankmyrz Yeah it’s cleaned up a lot. It’s been a while since I’ve seen stray syringes 💉 just walking about, and less people offering to smash your face in for looking in their general direction. Though there is more abandoned/empty shops than their used to be outside of the shopping center, which looks well shit.

Spanian these past 4 months you’ve been absolutely killing it brah
Peaking bro keep it up
My 85 year old knows of him I laughed when he knew of Kim Kardashian but absolutely loved when he knew of Span 😂✊🏽 let’s OGG
Spanian has to be the only bloke who can walk into any hood in Aus and be fine every time
That's because nobody is doing anything in Australia like that you kangaroos
I've noticed that he puts on a smile acknowledges people but often doesn't slow his step at all and I think that might be part of the key to it
Ain't that hard. Just be respectful
Australia has no hoods ya low lifes
Its Australia bro. We aren't in Brazil favelas. Our hood is considered middle class in alot of countries
I love to see a community that holds its self accountable.
I love that the boys tried to clean up and make sure they werent shooting up in the kindergarten! Respect
Just basically good guys who live where they do.They don't choose their future at that age.Made me proud of young blokes with Great morals❤
@@angusseletto1511 100 percent mate
That’s was a sick episode I have family in Melbourne and they even told me the things they have seen in the early to 2000s was insane good to see things are slowly turning for the better. Big ups to the young boxer he’s going places 🤙🏾
Turning for the better? Who told you that lie?
Like I said I have family that live there been there ever since 2000 now I’m not saying it’s gotten to the point where there isn’t any crime I’m just going off what I’ve been told by family in the area they live
Any other rapper/personality who tried to walk through these areas would have that chain snatched so quickly 😂 Spanian has universal respect
Except from old mate outside the cop shop in Woolloomooloo
😂😂😂@@SEEYAIAYE
Pffft stfu man wearing tn's and brand name clothes doesn't make you a gangster or make you tough. The real OG's never had head to toe tatts or wore brand name clothing. That's how all you muppets get caught.
😂😂😂 bro straight up slapped and mugged 😂😂😂
@@SEEYAIAYE 😂😂😂
Those brick homes are really nice for govt homes. They have front and back yards, running water etc...in Canada where i live, many First nations still live in squalor, with water that makes them sick, no infrastructure for the kids to be healthy. I hope these Aussies know how good they have it even though its the hood.
He should see the usa🤣
Our First Nations are given more than enough money to fix all those issues themselves! Their living in squalor is a choice plain and simple.
That boxing gym-barber shop combo is sick love the vibe of that gym
Straight out never seen gangs hanging on the street not even at Menzies. It ain’t like that
@@pritcheey958 yall realize this is the same in every single country in the world right 😂now
Sounds similar to Canadian cities. Sure, some neighborhoods are notorious for being underdeveloped, areas with affordable housing, or aging homes tend to be a little rougher due to the demographic that stays there.
(Eventually cleaning up when prices get to the point where developing is super affordable, which attracts more money)
There's a good universal rule to remember... Keep it moving if you don't belong there, get to where your going, an keep your head on a swivel. Mind your business and you'll be fine.
You can't be a victim of any sort of violence if no one is around or gets the chance to get close to you.
I like how everyone just greets you when u walk pass
Love the way the local lads kept a little crew going. Following to have Spanians back 💪💪💪
I lived in Melbourne for a couple of years and did wrestling training in Frankston, I use to get off at Dandenong station and bus it to Frankston and honestly felt heaps safer in Dandenong over anywhere in Frankston, never had an issue there and have honestly seen more in my home town of Lavington over Dandenong but that's just me who knows maybe if I walked to far from Dandenongs CBD I would of gotten rolled but at the station and the shopping centre Dandenong was lovely and met heaps of Lovley people there, always felt like home
But now there are way more druggies in Frankston!
Is Frankston even bad still? It’s cleaned up a lot from my understanding?
@@frankmyrz Yeah it’s cleaned up a lot. It’s been a while since I’ve seen stray syringes 💉 just walking about, and less people offering to smash your face in for looking in their general direction. They’re definitely still there, but it’s seems like there’s less than there used to be.
Though there is more abandoned/empty shops than their used to be outside of the shopping center, which looks well shit.
i grew up in hastings now live in the pines, still a few squatter crack dens about but nothin like the 90s aye. i hardly find any needles on my lawn anymore. frankganistans a sick place to live
I love how many ppl were following him-
I bet the ppl in the houses or bystanders were probably like, "Why does he have so many people following him-?"
He started by himself then ended up mobbin down the street.
🤣 I LOVE how you hear your own words & laugh🤣
“Povo stores” ect

Ahaha . It’s pretty sus.
I lived next door to some legit crackheads up northern Queensland who had 2 brand new C63 AMGs. It happens but it’s not normal ahaha
@@MrMitchell699 if y'all watched the full vid you see the lambo at the end.
It deadass was his fucking Lambo 😂 what's old mate still doing in the hood then? Or did he USED to live there?
@@kyleu3136No shit, that's why he's wondering what he does for a living.
Your videos really touch my heart. Thanks for showing the connection in the community and how the street life is filled with genuine people. Love your videos
0:47 from a fellow Melbournian and as someone who grew up on the streets as a kid. All I wana say is RESPECT 🫡
span sheds light on the people of the world that the governments have sadly given up on but they push to survive, respect bro!
You gotta do Broadmeadows next
Hey hey hey some of us don't have 12 hours free to watch a video
My old man is 1 of 16 growing up in Broady 1960's. Originals
@@Kronin-n6f lmao true
@@achebwahs1111 what a absolute legend
Broady isn't even bad lol I've been here since like 2017 and its nothing compared to Dandy, I grew up in Carlton and even that is worse in the commission housing areas. Maybe I am missing something though is there a party of Broady that is particularly ratty? I am normally around the shopping centre area and on the eastern side and I've never seen anything sus.
you need to do a foodie tour in Dandenong. Some fantastic food there. I go every week to Dandenong market and travel to all the locals to eat.
Some of the locals are super friendly. Hard working migrants trying to live the dream.
exactly we travel from Geelong to Dandenong just for food once in while
u are very charming, and this is a great documentary covering a lesser known part of Melbourne. Look foreward to watching to others!
one of the best into the hood vids in my opinion, great stuff loved it!!
Yeah hard, I think this one was the best
That's a bit bias. He's filmed and reviewed heaps better suburbs in other places. It was good. Cos they all are, but it could have been heaps more thorough.
Think he needed better tour guides tbh
I recommend doing the Olympic Village estate in Heidelberg west. Built to house Olympians during the 1956 Olympic Games then turned public housing experiment gone wrong. The largest Somali community in Australia too. Would be a real unique episode I reckon
Would be good to have that place documented before they start gentrifying it fully
I’m part of the Heidelberg Tech, Latrobe High and Heidelberg High fuck ups.
Born opposite the Waterdale Rd shops.
Kids there are born with PTSD.
I wouldn’t change it for the world
