As crazy as their video is, this songs is actually quite accessible to a new metal listener, which is what makes it a classic. The vocals are clean and understandable, and the rhythm is dope.
Fun fact: The original song was written to be more bassy, more guttoral, and chunky. It was Rick Rubin that cleaned it up and stripped it down- one of the many reasons Slipknot refuses to ever work with him again.
@@SonOfNonefair enough, everything he touches becomes “stripped back and simple”, I listened to this one Kesha album a while back and was like “this has gotta be a Rick Rubin” and sure enough it was
@@SonOfNone I didnt know about that, thats unfortunate. Its definatly their decision to not work with him again but like or hate the song it was probably way better for slipknots career it came out how it did. Its like the original poster said its where A LOT of new metal listeners start, its where I started in metal, literally with this song an a few other of what people say are "pop" slipknot songs. Eventually it lead me deeper an into crazier stuff, bridging the gap in music isnt always bad, it would have been bad if slipknot had changed everything they did but they didnt, thats my opinion
here's some fun facts: this video was filmed in a fan's house, nearby the Joey, the drummer's house and they paid a sum for the damages - the home was already due for renovation. Mick, the lead guitarist with that silver mask, was a music teacher. Their masks smell bad, really bad. beautiful playing in the beginning btw!
At the time corey wrote this he was suffering through cronic migranes and they only thing that would relieve the pain was pushing his thumbs against his eyes thats the meaning of the chorus lol
The second guitar in the verse that plays that opposing riff is such a cool effect. It's right on the edge of being out of tune from the rest but it works somehow. Slipknot is well known for doing that with the 2 guitars. Almost like the opposite of a harmony. Really interesting stuff
Fun fact about Satie: he was the first composer to come up with the idea of Muzak, an idea he described like “music so plain and unremarkable and is constantly around you such that you don’t really hear it” or something LOL. Beyond his beautiful piano music he was a avant-garde af.
Beautiful intro by Judson! And I totally understand you here, talking about the grace note: you add more subtle spaciality. Gives it a light breeze of air in between the notes. It is more calming and soothes the song. Duality is a great choice, because we know that Judson does not really enjoy the 'gutteral stuff' and he likes a little melody to it :D This song proves that Corey Taylor is a very diverse singer. The almost drone alike conversing with us through the lyrics of the verses and then on the chorus he screams his lungs out beautifully, like his heart is always bleeding. And you are so right Richard: Corey really got angry with the critics condemning Slipknot for being more of a freak act than an actual lyrically strong band that will endure the first 'hype'. O, and Vermillion pt. 2 is indeed one of their greatest songs. Psychosocial also being a personal favorite of mine. Thanks guys! Keep up the great work!
I could watch non-metal fan not knowing how to headband all day XD But for real, love the reaction. Always fun to see someone who can acknowledge talent even if it's not your style.
Volume 3 is Slipknot's best album. Probably one of the best f l o w i n g albums in the history of rock. hard to believe this song is 20 years old. I'm old.
Agreed theres something really special about vol3 its all over the place in the best way possible and thr drumming and guitar work is out if this world amazing idk how people can hate on it like wanyk its up there to
Psychosocial is probably the best song to show people because it's heavy yet still catchy af. The verse riff and pounding drums are constantly stuck in my head.
Hooray!! Finally released from TH-cam jail!! 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻 Enjoyed the intro. Thanks for naming the song because it was driving me nuts just waking up I couldn’t place the title. You guys rock 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻
something I heard a very long time ago that's stuck with me was a study done on personality types compared to musical preference an it was discovered metal listeners an classical listeners had more in common than with any other pairing.
Can he tell us about his tattoos? PS: I adore you two! Just recently discovered your videos and they have made my life life so much happier. Thank you!
I stumbled upon this channel, I love this band'! Here's the thing, I'm following y'all because you are a vibe! Regarding this song, it's a brilliant song both musically and lyrically.
Really appreciated the Gymnopedies intro I'd say Satie is and was a great pool of inspirstion for metal riff and composition. Maybe not intentionally for most but you can definetly hear the same note progressions and choices in a lot of darker genres, that's just my impression ofc, am probably wrong and biased because of my love of Satie's work.
I believe I saw an article years ago that said Mick would tune to B and Jim would use drop C#. Now most of their stuff is Drop B and Drop A. Scissors is even lower in Drop F#.
Gutarist here: Thickness of the strings is one way to not get spagetti strings if you go low. Many also in extreme deep tunings use baritone guitars or a normal guitar with extended neck, kind of what you would do for an E-Bass that has also longer neck to hold the strings in tune.
I don’t believe I’ve seen any NIN on your channel yet. Might be a cool artist to dig into with Trent Reznor’s recent domination of the film score realm.
The band i love from the 80's indie era we're called The Blue Aeroplanes. At one point in time they had upto 15+ members in the band 😎 Top notch channel, keep us entertained dude 👽☠️👹😎
I would love to see a reaction to Vermillion pt.2! Also, Sleep Token, Aqua Regia…I know that one is conning eventually 😅 *Ok…I made this comment before I finished the video and then you said, “Vermillion Pt. 2” 😮 that song is my favorite Slipknot song…it makes me super emotional though 😭
I've watched alot of you guys idk the names yet so its gon black shirt who is ovivously the heavier rock/ alternative rock etc expert but also has a general knowledge of alot of music / Then piano guy has obvious classical training or has been taught exceptionally well whether self taught or by someone. The open mindedness you both have is beautiful. Also piano guy listens to music the way i like it , he listens in depth and authentically. Also at the end i leanred your names but i had aleady typed that so it is whst it is . Lol I did like and hit bell all that jazz. ^^^see what i did there.
Time for an Unsainted or killpop reaction. In killpop it shows them using more of the keg for the music as well. Might find that interesting. And unsainted has a ton of awesome drumming. Even psychosocial would be a good watch
#greatmeasures, can you please have Judson (sp?) listen to part 1 of Vermillion and then part 2, all in the same take/video? I think he would get more out of it if he can see the juxtaposition and might help him appreciate Slipknot even more.
When used properly, profanity in writing is by no means a crutch. You compare it to filler which it can be but you don't really write with much filler. We speak with tons of it. Real life conversations are net anything like scripted conversations in movies. The expletives are more like verbal exclamation points and like exclamation points they lose the effect. However with careful use the precision F-bomb struck can really put a punch into a line. With all writing, finding challenges will improve all your writing in general. Your brain is like a muscle, it requires frequent and varied excursive for optimal output every bit as much as your biceps do.
lol at “drop B is a long way down” in 2023… show him Spiritbox - Holy Roller (remix) and let’s see what how he reacts to the breakdown being in “drop-shit-your-pants” (yes I know it’s pitch shifted but who cares).
A couple of thoughts when it comes to ‘profanity’. One: what is considered profane or not profane is so subjective that it almost feels meaningless. The complaint should never be “you’re using too much profanity” (because sometimes that’s the point). What should be said instead is that you’re using too many of the same types of words; profane or otherwise. Because, like you said, ‘like’ can be overused as well and becomes repetitiously annoying. Two: one of the reasons profanity is so popular is the rebelliousness of it all, and metal has always been a haven for those rebelling against the established order. Then ‘profanity’ becomes a small way of rebelling every moment of the day and it can feel quite good to make other people uncomfortable with your language - especially given they’ve likely made you uncomfortable at some point. (Bonus) Three: the way profanity and ‘like’ are used when speaking is usually as a moment of pause to think about what you’re going to say next. Some people, myself included, find verbal communication difficult and can be derailed easily so you use things like ‘fuckin’ to lengthen the sentence to give your mind a second to finally retrieve the word you’ve been trying to think of since you started the sentence in your head. I find this preferable to saying ‘um’ or ‘uhhh’ since those words make me feel as if I’m communicating poorly instead of keeping up the flow I had going prior to suddenly missing a word from my lexicon.
#greatmeasures I recommend Judson to listen to Tori Amos' "cover" of Erik Satie (from the intro) the song is called Battle of Trees. Its purely classical with Tori Amos singing. The whole album is full of classical song remakes, I really love it.
I was a big AC/DC fanboy and couldn't get into anything heavy. As a guitarist I used to just make fun of the idea of Slipknot being simple basic bullcrap. This song and before I forget got me into these guys. Next I bought Slipknot live 9.0, after that it was over I went back and listened from the beginning. One of my favorite bands now. Now Trivium!
Have you guys done any of Bring Me the Horizon's live show from the Royal Albert Hall yet? Would be interesting to see how he reacts to the overlaying of classical music onto metal for a bigger, more-epic experience
As a drummer, the sound of an Aluminum bat on a beer keg touches my soul. :D
It is a great unique noise, very definate slipknot.
As crazy as their video is, this songs is actually quite accessible to a new metal listener, which is what makes it a classic. The vocals are clean and understandable, and the rhythm is dope.
It's a "popish" metal song. I know many people that are not metal heads, but they love this song
It’s because of the clean singing and hard rock hooks
Fun fact: The original song was written to be more bassy, more guttoral, and chunky. It was Rick Rubin that cleaned it up and stripped it down- one of the many reasons Slipknot refuses to ever work with him again.

what's the name? thanks
Gnossiene by Erik Satie I think. @@dpadillaalmonacid
I was just looking for this comment
I like to imagine that both of these guys just tolerate the other's musical tastes
That house got bulldozer after the video shoot.
Condemned and destroyed!
Really?
Erik Satie is one of my favorites. Duality is a banger too
I think this was the first slipknot song that I liked

def intentionally ruined, due for reno anyway@@gloom13orchid

been watching all the videos from this series. love it too much! s/o from Brazil! keep rocking.
Every single time I see people react to this song it gets really obvious that they are being insanely stimulated in the best way possible.
You should really explore vermilion pt1 and pt2. Especially together, they’re incredible and tell a story!
Ha ha! I literally just posted that, just way more wordy and nerdy, as is my style.
Exactly they should listen to both parts in full
To the top!!!

A rock song, with some random groove, is Creature Of The Wheel, by White Zombie!
The intro reminds me of the piano version of Tiersen's 'La Valse d'Amélie'.
Shawn and (was Chris Fehn) Michael Pfaff both do multiple percussion instruments, mainly bass and snare.
