A terrific documentary, well balanced and not smothered with annoying music. It's in my TopTen of the hundreds of documentaries I've seen on the subject. You should be proud Christine!

I'm proud to have grown up and lived in Ashland from 1967 until I joined the Marine Corps in 1990. At the time, Ashland was a small town where everyone knew everyone. I knew the owner of John Stones Inn "CAPPY" in this video. I was attending Ashland Mindess Middle school when the secret room for the Underground Railroad was discovered at John Stones Inn. My class went on a field trip in town to see the secret room in the basement. We were also brought upstairs to see the old rooms.
It was a really cool experience for me and my class to be a part of.
When I was a little boy around 4 years old, people still rented rooms in the building. At the time, I would walk to the Ashland News Store with my mother and sister. We had to pass John Stones Inn to get to There. There was a lady that was renting a room at the Inn that had a spider monkey. She always showed him off from the window of her room or out on the second-floor porch. Anyone else from Ashland that remembers the Spider Monkey Lady, please chime in!

I worked at John Stones and experienced a haunting once. A coffee mug flew off a shelf in front of me and broke on the counter next to me (right at the top of the basement stairs) when I looked up to see where the cup fell from I saw that it had been pulled out from under other cups that toppled into where the cup that fell had been sitting stacked under the other cups. This happened before anyone told me the place was haunted, so i wrote it off as odd... My grandparents later mentioned how they saw the place on tv and it was haunted etc. So I looked it up and realized what had happened.

I don’t know if Stone’s Public House is haunted or not, but I definitely had a paranormal experience there when my husband and I were visiting from California in late summer 2008. A little backstory; my mother was born and raised in Ashland and graduated from Ashland High School in the 1940’s. Her family, the Mason’s, had lived on Main Street just a block or so away from Stone’s Public House back in the 1940s and 50’s. About four weeks after my mother passed away in California I decided to fly back to Massachusetts, visit her hometown and do some genealogical work on my family tree. Now, to get to the paranormal experience; it was well known to everyone in our family that my mother absolutely loved chocolate cake. It was her favorite thing, hands-down. After visiting the town cemetery, we were enjoying lunch at the Stone’s Restaurant and while my husband and I were talking about my mom and the stories that she used to tell about growing up in Ashland, ice-skating on the old mill pond, the football rivalry between Ashland and Hopkinton, etc., the most unbelievable thing happened. A song started playing in the dining room that I had never heard before and, as I listened in absolute disbelief, I heard the refrain “can I have another piece of chocolate cake?“. Obviously, I was dumbstruck. Chocolate cake!? How is that possible? My mom’s favorite thing in the entire world? Could it have been coincidence? I don’t think so. If my mom was trying to get a message to me from beyond the grave, how could she get my attention? It would definitely be the words “chocolate cake”. No one will ever be able to convince me that when that rather obscure Crowded House song, "Chocolate Cake", played that day in Stone’s Public House, it was my mother telling me that she was there with me. No doubt about it. It may not be a ghost story, but it was definitely a paranormal experience for me.
