Last year I bought a Nikon D3S. I love it. I matched it with a big fast prime lens the Nikkor 85 mm F1.8. I wear the camera on my shoulder all the time and it makes me look real bad-ass! It certainly turns a lot of heads.
Edward Slizewski thanks for watching. Yeah for sure a D3S on the shoulder isn’t discret!!!! Neither is the sound of it !!! But who cares? Lol! Imagine I some times go out with the 80-200 AFS, the big one!
We can find some still today. These camera are so strong that nearly 15 years later they work like they always did. I hope you enjoyed your D3 since these 2 years.

Is easy to get my photos from my two Nikon D4 to my iPad Pro M2. Use a Apple USB-C multi-poort adapter. To it also to my HDMI monitor. Use always metal prime lenses such as the 85mm, 105mm, 135mm and the 180mm. Have a metal Nikon 80-200mm but use it rarely. Sometimes i use the Nikon F5 and in a large darkroom. Do alot of black and white portraits.
Thanks Didier, I just bought a D3s in 2020 $550 Australian from an auction, have bought 2xCF cards, looking to enjoy working with 12M sensor in the low light. With the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art lens I go at auction a few weeks later.
Richard Freeman you will love this combo for sure. The sigma Art 50mm is awesome on the 12Mpx D3S and it’s wide aperture will lead you to stay at low ISO and keep good dynamic of the sensor. Enjoy!!! I just sold my Art 50mm because I have the Nikon 58mm 1.4G and I had to get some cash... but this 50mm Art has always pleased me for years
Catmonkey thanks a lot. Yeah I try to be myself and photography is my passion which I want to share the best I can... hope you will enjoy the channel. Thanks for subscribing.

I shoot with the Nikon D3 and my backup is the Nikon D4. Use only three prime lenses. Use the most the Nikon AF 85mm f/1.4D IF and the Nikon AF DC 105mm f/2D and the 135mm f/2D. Use them in the 90s with the Nikon F5.
Great lenses. I had them and I remember the pleasure to use them. Heavy pieces of metal and glasses. One only default was chromatic aberration. Don’t you suffer about this?
Jimmy Hawke yeah! Thanks for watching and for your comment. Maybe D810 has better dynamic but in terms of pleasure to use I prefer my D3S and I sold my D850 !!!
The D5 color kills the D3s, but thats just my opinion and I have used them side by side. I finally sold my D3s last year, it never got used much, I got it secondhand with only 9,000 shutter count in 2017 for $900 US. I put about 10,000 more on it and sold it in like new condition for $1050 US. So I made money, but I couldn't stand the lack of the joysticks for AF, like my D4s/D5/D500 have. Once you go with the newer D5/D500 you can't go back it's just too good, I can switch AF modes with one button and my eye to the finder, I can literally change everything I need or want to on the D5/D500 with my eye to the finder and just with my right hand!
@@patricksmith2553 yes same with the D850 that kills all of them regarding colors. Sometimes it's good to learn to do with what we have. A lot of possibilities exist with right hand only but Photography is not question of features but more of sensation, anticipation, intention... The dynamic of color doesn't make the émotion of the picture. For sûre D5 is à bit better but not so many People can afford one... Without talikng about XQD cards... 😉
@@DidierMOULINPhotography Yes I had a D850 for about 6 months, I was lucky enough to get one through NPS early and lucky enough to sell it for more than I paid for it. That was at the time when nobody could find one anywhere, I had tons of people bidding on mine lol. It was a fantastic camera and by far the best DSLR ever made, for what it's made for and thats about anything. See though it wasn't made for someone like me, the files were too big and the penalty for shooting RAW Medium was soft images. I'm glad I sold mine, but if I was anything but a sports and news photojournalist I would have kept it. The only thing that I think would beat it now and for around the same price is the Fuji GFX50r! Thats what I would buy if I was doing portraiture and or landscapes. There really is something special about medium format, just like there is a noticeable difference between DX and FX or micro four thirds and FX.

I took the initiative to enlighten myself and go back as far as shooting on a classic Nikon F2SB with selection of Nikkor AI prime lenses. Going back to my Nikon D800E feels amazing, and the the Nikon D3s still seems like a modern space age camera. So yea, make the best of what you have! A 10 year old camera doesn't seem that bad, when I can still enjoy a 47 year old camera.
Tyler Stevenson sales and marketing try to make us feel obsolete every time they launch a new one! But coming back to the essence of photography, it is plenty enough to make us do the job!

John Peschke yeah the D700 is of the same generation and is still one of the best Nikon full frame DSLR. High ISO are just limited compared to the D3S, I would say of 2 stops.
Catmonkey I forgot to mention that after the D70 I jumped on the D700 many years ago and yeah I loved it. And many years after I got the D3S. Meanwhile some D3X, D750, D850...
Short answer, YES. Plenty of tangible, real useful tips below. I still use a D3s for professional work, still a low light king. If you need better low light AF, go get a SC-29 problem solved. If you need even better low light AF like in pitch black get a SB-900/910 (use the AF on the flash) I like it mostly for it's small file size. 12mp is plenty. If I need more larger files I use Topaz Gigapixel Ai and you can get over 60mp in detail Nikon D3s $700-$800, Nikkor 50mm 1.8 $100 SC-29 $40 Topaz Gigapixel Ai $100 As for video well use Topaz Gigapixel Ai for your videos too. 4k footage from the 640x424. The smaller size does 2 great things, allows you to shoot longer on the D3s and allows your workflow (editing) to be super fast without losing quality. Test it, you wont know the difference. I've used it on 320x216 to 4K and I'm telling you it's very very hard to tell it wasn't shot in 4K and tbh none of my clients have wanted 4K, they all want 1080p which is even better. You'll need to zoom in 2x to 4x to see any sort of artifacts. Wireless options WT-5a (check link below) Air-Direct (w/standalone battery) The Air-Direct is the best wireless option I've seen by anyone on the market b/c it has its own power source which no matter what camera you use even the new R5 wireless transfer is a battery drainer. WT-5a Adapted (Air-Direct better) www.upaa.org/node/326 The thing about 2020, software is way more powerful than it was 10yrs ago.
Donovan Tyler definitely agree with you. Those old camera are so joyful and pleasant to use and the outcome is still very good and pleasing for the majority of customers.
lobotomy108 hi, thanks for watching. I’ve heard that the D4 had some color issue. Is it something you have ? But yes the big size is a real benefit for great handling. Do you have XQD in the D4, I don’t remember

D3s is a beast - and is only relegated to my back up camera as I now shoot with a D4s - for low light, long battery performance and tank like build these are perfect for music photography
Sick Nayers thanks for watching and for your comment. Since this generation whatever comes after is great with perhaps additional benefits, features, Max... but all are great and reliable cameras for sure and having a D3S as a back up is certainly a back up on which you can have no doubt.

The dream combo !!! Congratulation !!! 👏👏 The only combo that made me switch is the Lumix S1 + S1R in which I'm in love too ! Paired with AI-S and Leica prime lenses...
The D3s may only have 12MP, but they are large photosites that gather lots of light and provide great tonal response. And if you need more resolution to make larger prints, three words: Topaz Gigapixel AI. In 2020, computational photography in the computer can bump that resolution for you with incredible results, as long as you start with a good quality file.
Robert Falconer thanks for your comment and being interested in this video and it’s content. Definitely, 12Mp is far enough for most of the cases. And I deal with it. I will check your mention and see what it is.
I agree so much. I grew with this & still use it. I came from 35mm F4E & F5 so we compose & make it count, not wasting frames. My 1st dSLR was the D2H @ 4.1mp. Id worked fine for it's time. I love the 28 1.4D & 85 1.4D on the D3S. Using SB-800 flash since D2H days along w/ the SB-R1C1 close up kit & it's blooming brilliant on my D3S, but what's the better flash per value today. What does SB-900 bring to the table for D3S?
Thanks for your comment I had a D2Xs I guess or D2X don’t remember and with so few pixels I was impressed any how by the accuracy of the exposure. I found back last week a 28mm f/1.4 AFS E after two years selling mine… so happy!!! As I sold my Leica Q (28mm f/1.7) I’m so happy and I guess the AF-D is excelentissime !!! I’m less found of the 85 both D or S as they have a lot of purple fringes and green on contrasty areas. Regarding the SB-900 over the 800 I can’t tell you … there must be some improvement I in the power or else. What I know is that the 900 faces over heating issues which have bee corrected in the 910. I would skip the 900. Regarding

And in this regards the Nikon D3S is extremely good at lots of situations and for most of us, it is far enough and it can save you lots of money instead of chasing always the last one!!!
A great camera doesn’t stop being a great camera just because it’s older. For the majority of people they will never need or use the benefits of the brand new ones. If these were still the same price they were new or just a little under then no, it wouldn’t be worth it. But you can pick one of these, and older model cameras in general for peanuts. Take the canon 5dmk2 for example. Pretty much every fashion campaign in the last 10 years was shot on one. A few genuine Hollywood movies and tv shows. But it’s been superseded but a few versions. And? That doesn’t take away from how great it is, but no people need the latest and greatest because the internet says so.

For CF Cards, you can in place use SD to CF adapters (sd are cheaper than cf) in the camera body... Ths SDs can then be read in any sad card reader. That’s what I do in my D3
I tried and sent it back. the dimension of these chinese adapters are not prices and I had to put too much constrains to make it go into the camera or even worse to take it out. Too risky.
But in fact what I meant in the video is to be able to read a native CF card. Not a CF shaped card with SD inside. Because as a former Nikon user, I have a bunch of CF cards and will not replace them by SDs... so if you find a CF card adapter in which we can put a CF card and that has a SD outlet connector to put in a SD card reader... ?
Hi Didier, our point was that most people now have laptops and few laptops have a CF card reader unless you get a PCMIA adapter so the use of a CF to SD adapter just makes life easier.
janis denby yes you’re right. And if someone is looking to get a D3S he can directly start with this CF SD adapter. Thanks for your comment and support.
Dear sir, this applies to any camera that uses CF cards not just the D3s with one caveat our D4 (both of them) we have found using the adapter reduces the write speed when shooting and also if you wish to copy files from the XQD card to the CF/SD slot so for the D4 I would stay with the native CF card. The main key when shooting on a D200, D300, D700, D3, D3s is that your lens be sharp and clean. My recommendation is the 50mm 1.8 (price, sharpness, tonal range) brand new its only $100.
Donovan Tyler yes the 12Mpx are less difficult to manage compared to 46Mpx which require the state of the art of lenses. But anyhow the better the lens, the nicer the result will be. This comes after your framing, the interest of the subject and the quality of the light. As soon as these are good, a better lens will lead to a nicer picture. Prime lenses are always a good thing because it forces the photograph to move and frame and be creative. The 50 1.8 is OK for sure. Even the AF-D
Cant upload to a cell phone and then to the Internet? Then up load to a laptop, to cell, to Internet. Purchased a D3 with 217,000 clicks as a toy. I paid 475. Did I get a bad deal? About the same price as a Cool-picks.
Certainly not a bad deal. For sure a good way to learn and improved Photography ans creativity. Give it à good Lens and there you go ! Thanks for your comment and watching the video.
Just bought one again after browsing between my old pics and seeing that quite a good amount of them where coming from this very camera. So long for hyper-tech, super Rez ML monsters, every now and then it’s just more fun to grab one of this still very capable old skool puppies and just shoot away :) If you can find one in decent conditions at a reasonable price, just buy it! You won’t regret!
Reason why I don't sell it even if those days I don't use it that much but one day will come that I will come back to it... I just kept it with my AFS 80-200 2.8... and some manual AIS lenses compatible also with my L Mount cameras...
@@DidierMOULINPhotography yeah, recalled we even had the same lens :) Actually I'm searching for another one used to pair again with it, very capable combo indeed!
Is it worth getting a Nikon D3s if you already own a Nikon D700?? I found one in like new condition for 900$ with 3762 shutter count? You think the price is worth it?
Hi thanks for this question. If you need one stop or two over the D700 then yes it’s worth the D3S. Otherwise if you add the PDK1 grip on the D700 you reach 9 FPS. The price you have is very good
Hello, I think about to bus a Nikon D3s on the used market. I have only one problem wuth the camera. The two flashcard slot. Ithink this slot must used very careful. But in the rest I think it is a very good camerafor people who want to take picture. Some month ago I sell my analog equipment at ebay and I am looking for a digital camera to take some picture. Thanks for this video.
Yes you are right to point this. The little pins that connect the CF cards are fragile if you don’t take care but there is a way to put the card in and the cards follow the path made for them so it’s hard to scratch the pins. You won’t be disappointed with a D3S depending on your photography. Sometimes 12 Mpx is not enough if you print large... good luck to find the good one!
@@DidierMOULINPhotography I think I don't print the shoots which I want to produce very much normal A5, A4 or A3 I need a camera which has same Niveau than the Nikon F4 or FE2 which I owned in past.
@@jensroeckendorf382 the D3S is a big camera keep this in mind. A D700 has nearly the same performances with a smaller size for instance. Both can deliver nice files for A3 prints
@@DidierMOULINPhotography Yes the connectors from a CF card are more fragile if compared to a XQD or SD cards. But on the other hand, I've been using CF cards since somwhere in the 90's as storage for psion handhelds and such, computer stuff like raid controllers and a D70 and other camera's. I've seen a few CF slots with bent pins and it was always the result of someone trying to force the card in when it did not got in instead of removing and checking if the card was inserted the right way round. So the story that a CF is a lot more vulnerable than a SD card, I think it is a bit of a myth
@@Drpiwi totally agree! I also had a D70 by the way and myself I never saw a broken pin. It’s a marketing story based on frightening people to convince them changing technology.
Phillip Morrison well I think it depends on the generation. I will not go on this topic as all Nikon’s sensor are from Sony now I guess... Leica is doing a great job in this area. It’s a matter of sensor, lens and signal treatment... and they master the 3 (well, the sensor is not made by them). The D3X is even better than the D3S regarding colors
i got one today, for nothing.. 300$. wtf is this camera??! where's the noise?! i ve only had it for 8 hours but i m in a state o shock. i have a d800e, and it's first time i look at it in disappointment.
Juventin hi my English is not perfect so I’m afraid I miss understand you comment? Do you mean you like the sound of the D3S and you prefer this body to the D800e?
@@DidierMOULINPhotography no i mean there is no noise in the photos, no grain what so ever. Look i knew the D800e wasn't the best high iso camera, but it's still is a great performer, up there with all the sony's be it a9 ii or a7 iii.. but the "eye balls" on this D3s sensor are unreal!
If you want wifi and or Sd cards for your D3(s) or so you can use something like the QUMOX Micro SD Card TF to WiFi CF CompactFlash Memory Card Adapter, That replaces one of the CF cards and has the space for a micro sd car in it so that it is both a CF card and a wifi transmitter and it only costs around €15 or so. I have no experience using it and what it will do with the battery life of the D3(s). th-cam.com/video/Pn7se8OG9Dw/w-d-xo.html
Honestly I would not recommend any of these technologies. If one wants connectivity and so on, buy a modern ca.era and he will have all last technology possible
If you want a detailed review on the D3 from a pro, look up ishootshows.com He did an old but still very relevant review on the D3 and concert photography (low light). Oh and there's one old tip for the D3 and D3s but you def don't have to follow b/c it's not a real big difference. Shoot using 1 stop ISO. Anything above 800 ISO will look slightly better in post. So 1600 iso boosted to 2000 iso in post will look better than 2000 iso straight outta camera. Software seems to handle the 1/3 and 1/2 stops better but not by much.
Donovan Tyler thanks for all your comments Donovan. It looks like you don’t need to be convinced and it’s a pleasure to read such an honest point of view. I plan to do a review up to date, not maybe too technical because I don’t want to be boring but mainly to focus on the versatility of this machine and go a bit deep in the menu to show some tricks. @@DidierMOULINPhotography true so I use this as a work around. What I did was look at how old film photographers shot. They didn't change film speed much (you obviously had pushing and pulling in camera for effects but digital has a lot more latitude unless you're using nikonpc custom curves which act just like film) so I typically set my iso based on the light then aperture, then shutter speed is how I adjust for changes in available light. If it's moving too fast A mode. But since I mostly use M I can look at light and pull settings without test shots. The only catch to that set-up is you should have your color profile consistent across the board. Adobe RGB, Raw and your folders unless you want different folders for different iso value, I just make folder 100 and keep it 100 across all.
I'm sure I would learn a lot of things discussion with you. Very interesting. I try to understand everything because english is not my native langage but I think I get the essential meaning. I will save my menu setup ans try your trick.

I'll make this easy. YES! The D3 series will still be good enough 20 years from now.
Yes even if a lot of things have been improved since the D3 series including the D700 is still a good family of cameras,
I shoot with the Nikon D3 and my backup is the Nikon D4.
Best Nikon I have ever used. Colors are unsurpassed.

Short answer, YES.
Plenty of tangible, real useful tips below.
I still use a D3s for professional work, still a low light king. If you need better low light AF, go get a SC-29 problem solved. If you need even better low light AF like in pitch black get a SB-900/910 (use the AF on the flash)
I like it mostly for it's small file size. 12mp is plenty.
If I need more larger files I use Topaz Gigapixel Ai and you can get over 60mp in detail
Nikon D3s $700-$800,
Nikkor 50mm 1.8 $100
SC-29 $40
Topaz Gigapixel Ai $100
As for video well use Topaz Gigapixel Ai for your videos too.
Wireless options
WT-5a (check link below)
Air-Direct (w/standalone battery)
The Air-Direct is the best wireless option I've seen by anyone on the market b/c it has its own power source which no matter what camera you use even the new R5 wireless transfer is a battery drainer.

ForeverYoung thanks a lot for this great idea. I’m afraid I won’t be able as I sold most of them to get the budget for my conversion to the L mount system which proved me last weekend that it is very good even for car races where my result with lumix S1R + Leica SL 90mm APO SUMMICRON are far better than what I got with my beloved D3S + 150-600Tamron G2... I sold the 58mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.4 as well as the 50mm art series 1.4 from Sigma. And I continue selling my Nikkor lenses until the last one, day where I think I should take the hard decision to sell the D3S. But hey, I have to look forward...

Thanks Didier it’s interesting to have a pragmatic approach rather than a focus on specific features that are not that relevant for real life!
Laurent Durante thanks Laurent for this feedback. Yes my intent is to be more focused on the act of taking photography than on features... I’m glad you have already perceived this.
Exactly.
Nothing to add !!!! Thanks for your input. I don't know the canon models but I believe you.

Regardez Dxo...

mattandhisnikon Hi. Thanks for watching. The lens is a marvellous 28mm f/1.4 !!!
Too risky.
Hi all, you can get a CF to SD adapter on ebay,
janis denby great news.thanks a lot.
Also because the D3 and D3s are so old they're aren't a lot of videos covering it like you'd be hard pressed to find 20 honestly.

It’s a marketing story based on frightening people to convince them changing technology.
ótimo vídeo!
i want buy one d3 in 2021..do you agree ??
I would prefer a D700 in this case . It has the sensor cleaning that the D3 does not have
It depends the price and the condition of course
Like a breast, it just feels great in your hand. Like a Saab, it has a buttons and dials for tons of stuff, rather than having to use screens.
Long story short - this camera is not for kids.
For sure there are many alternatives for Kids !!!! 😄
Man nikon and Fuji colors always look so much better than canon and sony.
@@Juventinos I understand you now very well. I own lumix S1 with gorgeous EVF but as soon as I put my eyes back in the D3S viewer I'm always impressed

Thanks again for watching.
I’m brand new on youtube so I’m far from being perfect
@@DidierMOULINPhotography Nikon top 3 low light cameras. #1 Z6, #2 Df, #3 D3s.
A trick I like using on the D3s is making it one handed. If you set your 'shoot' menus to your 4 primary iso's in the auto iso menu but don't turn auto iso on, you can reassign the AE-L/AF-L, PRV, or Fn buttons to 'press and dial' effectively giving you a dedicated ISO button.

Donovan Tyler that’s awesome because yes one drawback of the iSO button is that you can’t dial ISO auto ON or OFF. A bit annoying sometimes
Shooting video, set to 720p the upscale in a good converter. Going from 720p to 1080p isn't much and most YT and sports broadcast are either 720p or 1080p. 4K is barely used to broadcast most sports. NFL and NBA definitely in 4K but around the world it's still 720p
Donovan Tyler 100% agree with you. But we can’t say it’s a good performer in video let’s say for vlog!!!!
