There was something about the D3 / D3s / D700 generation that was never repeated again. Robust, ergonomically convenient, and 12 mp still feels like a sweet spot somehow.
Damn straight. I use my D700 98% of the time. If my customer doesn’t need super large prints, I use the D700. That first Nikon generation of 35mm sensors are legendary.
It is and put shame on the D800 overpriced and plagued with numerous problems not to mention the D600 I get furious when I see people trying to sell it far as I'm concerned a scam when you trying to sell a camera that you know has problems and don't say anything about it
Recently got a D3s to go with my D500. Makes the D500 feel like a toy. Not fussed about lugging around that pro body because it's a pleasure to use. He's a heavyweight boxer with killer reflexes, machine-gun shutter, and the results are always awesome. The D500 is a greyhound: Tight, light and just as fast. They both have their strengths, and feel like thoroughbreds at their own game. Great video. Greetings from Australia.
Yes the Nikon D3s is one of the best Nikon cameras. I had a Nikon D5 the picture quality wasn't better. At low ISO values, the best image quality is the Nikon D3x. The Nikon D3s is also a perfect war reporter camera. I have transported them 1000 kilometers in a backpack with a motorcycle at all speeds up to 300 kmh. No malfunctions or defects. Also in 2021 there is always a perfect camera that doesn't have to hide. And my Nikon d3 x is one of the best cameras ever. I never want to miss them again. She takes such good pictures, with the Nikon 105 1.4E it is unimaginable.
In addition to your D3X comment, it's simply the best color science Nikon has put out. The only fault? It's slow. I'm still shooting with my D700 as my primary and I want to add a D3S.
I've been using a D3 for a little over a year now. Always wanted one since I got first got into photography in 2008. The D3 has more in common with today's cameras then it does with 2007 cameras!
I don't shoot stills professionally anymore but if I did, I've said numerous times I could make a decent living even now with a Canon 5D (orig) and a 1D Mk. IIn. Are you limited to CF card size?
@@TheProjectPhotography I`m still using my semi-professional D700 + MB-D10 since 2009 under all conditions without any issues and I`ve no need to update or change - the built-in pop-up flash and its i-TTL flash control with off-camera i-TTL flashes (CLS) is amazing - I`m an enthusiastic hobbyist and "strobist" since the 1980s and not interested in video
Still loving my D3S. I bought some high end lenses. Got the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 and the Nikon 105mm f/1.4 Prime. Also picked up a Sigma 60-600 Sport Super Zoom. This 12 year old camera just shines with modern glass! Thanks so much for recommending this body and the work your doing! Best! John.
I have a Sony a6100 24mp and the D3s. Everything you said is true. I love my D3s for the same reasons you do. It is the Toyota Land Cruiser of Digital Cameras. It's ISO is so great it can practically see in the dark. It has great low ISO pictures down to the Basement as well. The camera is literally a TANK. Literally. Marine Photographers took it into battle and showered with the thing.l The camera has a body that can literally stop a bullet or take a bullet and take a picture of it after it's dug out of the body with a razor knife. The one I have has over 2 million clicks on it and it only needs an occasional Sensor Cleaning. The Live View is 920,000 pixel 3 inch display that is Razor sharp. The original SRP was $4999.99 but I bought mine for 10% of that. It loves all the old lenses that save you money and unless you are doing Billboards or Movie Posters the 12.87 MP is plenty for even the nicest wedding pictures. It truly is a camera that I love having and even if it weighs 2.75 Lbs (Body Only) or 1.240 kg. so it isn't light. But you could throw it across the street, let a car run over it and then leave it in a forest fire and then let the fire department put it out with a high pressure fire hose and still take a picture of the guy that put it out. It's a Tank. The colors are pure and the lenses fit sweet. It's was amazing in 2010 but it's still has it's magic a decade later.
The only camera on record that had stopped a bullet and saved a photographer's life (Don McCullin) was the Nikon F. Personally, I only found my D3 that was purchased in 2008, similar in size & weight as my first SLR (Nikon F2A + Motor Drive + Battery Pack) four decades ago. Although the setup is lighter when shooting with the D3, since I don't have to pair it with an external hammerhead flash & battery pack. 😊
I just purchased a D3s online based on your testimonial! I used to own a D2x and loved it! I too enjoy the professional style cameras they do perform and feel great. A joy to use. I’ll give more feedback after it arrives next week!
The Project Photography I’m loving this beast of a camera. I’ve been up in the mountains of Tucson AZ shooting landscapes. I love the full frame sensor. I’m purchasing the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200 f/2.8E FL ED VR next week. I only have Dix lenses at the moment, which is no problem really, they work fine with the image area set to crop, but it’ll be really nice to use that highly regarded Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 and use the full sensor. I’ll let you know how it goes!
So I’m still loving this Hallmark of a Nikon camera. I purchased the Nikkor 70-200 FL ED VR and it’s magical. Also added the Prime 105mm f 1.4 and that is truly a joy to use for portraits and corporate events, weddings etc. Also bought a Nikon D4 and that’s a workhorse as well. Between the two I’m well equipped for a variety of shooting situations. I still get antsy every so often about the whole techno pixel thing. So many people tell me that I should sell off my D3s and my D4 and put the money towards a D850. But of course I’d then have to buy the battery grip and a venerable ton of memory cards. I listened to one photographer talk about his first experience shooting with the D850 and he said he was swapping memory cards like magazines in an M16 assault rifle! What are your thoughts on shooting a wedding with my D4 and maybe a couple more Primes like the 28mm or the 35mm. I shot one wedding so far as the “backup” photographer. My close friends hired a photographer before thinking of me, so they ok’d it with the official “hired” photographer for me to shoot as well. They said that they liked my pics better than the “hired” photographer, but I think they were appreciating my artistic ability more than examining the photos for resolution etc. isn’t it funny, how if you capture a moment that’s moving, no one seems to notice the technical aspects. One of my favorite images ever is Robert Doisneau Hotel D’Ville,. It’s grainy and out of focus and one of the most celebrated romantic images of the 20th century. Thanks so much for the encouragement regarding these great cameras.
i also just purchased my very first D3s....i usually hate surfing on my android and relied on my home pc to surf ebay and find a deal.....but my android helped me find a small mom n pop photo shop that my home computer could not even find it! the body is pristine and the cost.....I just HAD TO HAVE IT!!! So on Saturday I will be a little kid awaiting Santa to come to deliver a box with my new toy!!!
I bought one 2 months ago , It is amazing, very stable and nice color. I used it for sports, birds, flowers, and portraits, very sharp with my 135mm f2D and AIS 28mm 2.8. 12 millions pixels are far more than enough than I need. To me only for landscape, more pixels do a great favour.
Ah man you're one lucky photographer, those lenses are insanely nice. How do you like the 28mm? I've been looking for a 28mm just for fun. Yeah I really don't feel the need to have more megapixels, the only thing that sucks is the lack of cropability. Other than that 12MP is more than enough.
@@TheProjectPhotography Definitely agree with it. I have a D800 for higher pixels. The AI-S 28mm 2.8 is the best wide angle lens I ever have. Less distortion, very close focusing distance, I can even use it as micro lens or portrait lens(quite interesting ) , extremely sharp from center to edge even wide open. Only problems is the manual control, and the aperture only can be set as 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11,16, 22 step by step, and the color is a little pale on my D800, but not a problem on my D3s. If you are buying it, make sure you get the AI-s one not the AI.They are totally different.
I started with a Nikon D5000, the issues I had was low light shots. being on a budget I found a good D3s and researched the camera. after using it for model shoots, weddings and events, I could not believe the results from an older camera. Definitely worth the purchase even compared to more modern ones. looking at getting a D700 as a secondary body.
I'd rather tell you buy a second D3s, I've owned the D700. It was a beast at the time. However the D3s significantly outperformed the D700 in high ISO. Considering the actual price gap between them two, I wouldn't hesitate.
I'm a pro photog and have shot with almost every pro DSLR Nikon has made. I will tell you hands down that there is something about the pixel structure of the D3 and D700 that comes closest to film grain. Something warmer and more analog about the images. Its similar to how modern TV's are crazy sharp and hi res, but movies in HD look cheap and soap opera-ish and have lost cinematic quality
Over the years , I’ve had so many cameras, but the D3, D3s,D4’s are just the best , great image quality , menus are easy to navigate , and just that great feel in the hands , plus 12 megapixels are more than enough for most scenarios 👍
It might sound crazy, but in 2017 I replaced a D1x with a D3! My D3 was used by a sports event company. My only issue now is my batteries are at the end of their life, but love the camera a legend of it's time. Enjoyed the video keep it up.
@@TheProjectPhotography My battery is end of life too. I have to recharge it almost every night that I use it and it only gets the battery to 1/4 charge. I bought a new battery on ebay that has 3500 wHrs instead of 2400. If that battery does what it says, it will have another quarter more overall shots per charge.
Great review! I still do have Nikon D3, D3s, D4s, and recently added D750. Regarding Nikon's professional cameras, there is no such thing as worries when it comes to reliability. I have never had a failure during shoots over more than a decade, and I have shot as long as 13 hours straight. I started the digital photography world with Nikon D1x. It was a great camera when it came to ergonomics, transitioning from Nikon F5, which still is my favorite film camera that I still have. However, Nikon D2x was a disappointment with the crop sensor because Canon already had a full sensor camera by then. When D3 came out, I delayed purchasing it until I realized that images from Nikon D2x were so shitty compared to a semi-pro Canon camera in low-light that I purchased Nikon D3 the next day. Ever since then, I became a happy camper with Nikon although I was really pissed at Nikon due to a representative from a Javit Center Photo Show lying to me about Nikon not going to FX format and coming out with it within three months after I purchased my Nikon D2x. I lost A LOT of money then. All because of Nikon's nonexistent reliability issue with their professional cameras, I bought used D3s and D4s. I still used them without worries unlike my newly purchased D750. I am keeping D750 because of its low-light performance, the high megapixel count, and the tilt screen. If you are starting out professionally, I strongly suggest a used Nikon D750 for its low light capability and functionality. But for reliability and low light performance, hands down Nikon D3, D3s, D4, D4s, D5, and D6.... Something that I've learned over the years is that there is no need to buy new professional digital bodies. It is because the pro bodies are all built to last, so you will not going to have an issue unless the previous owners abused the shit out of the cameras. And, you will have a ton of money left over in your pocket... BTW, there is a notable difference between Nikon D3 and D3s. Nikon D3 does not have a video function, while Nikon D3s can shoot video. If you are going to buy a cheap pro body, go with Nikon D3s or Nikon D4s. Just know that Nikon D4s has significantly better autofocus compared to Nikon D3s and better low-light autofocus performance. For a low budget, D3s.
I got the D850 after shooting with the D3 for over ten years. The color difference is incomparable. Everyone said how great the 850 was but I just have been looking for anything that compares to the D3. It is my forever camera.
@@mdunivanphotography3834 well from what I've read and what I've seen the d850 is way better than McGee 800 I had a D800 before it got stolen. But it was really lacking and smudging and sharpness detail at times. The d850 probably is a little bit better I would not know. You certainly have a solid camera and way better video features. The D3 which was an amazing camera might be fun but it's just too heavy and the battery tech. Has moved on. I'm trying to decide now between a Fuji xt3 or maybe a micro 4/3. I just don't have that type of budget but those cameras can definitely perform and for most work you could barely see a difference. Side note D600 and the d750 seem to both have too many problems. I would pick up a d700 for fun today. Prices are good now used
In the age of phones, facebook, and Instagram (Facebook maxes out at 2048x1536 or thereabouts, Instagram maxes out at 1920x1200 or thereabouts) megapixels arguably matter less today than they ever have. You've got tons of people going back to the old 6MP APS-C DSLRs for the colors those old CCDs could provide, because megapixels matter less than they ever have. And these new extreme resolution sensors make every little detail that much more critical. Things like camera shake, lens quality, autofocus accuracy, etc. On the A7R IV, 5-axis IBIS + optical stabilization that can work in tandem has become something of a *necessity* - it's not just a gimmick anymore. And the more pixels they pack into the same space, the more ISO noise you get. Less is more. It definitely still applies today.
For sport shooting, may I suggest the D3' s little brother the D300 . The APSC crop factor is a blessing when it comes to boosting your telephoto lens reach without sacrificing image quality, The out put of the D300 is up there with the D3, and the D700.
Although I have newer Nikon models, I have 2 D3s cameras and a D700. I bought them on eBay with very low shutter counts. I use them more often than the newer ones and love the results.
I bought a Nikon D3 and still use it. Mine has about 9,600 shutter actuations and in near mint condition. These cameras are amazing sharp, clear and workhorses. I use it for almost everything. I still use my D800 for weddings. I think the D3 excels in having just the right file size.
Spot on mate I’ve had my D3s from new ive used and abused it so much it’s never once let me down I shoot sports in all weathers news jobs events landscapes weddings astro everything and this beast delivers with no fuss it’s a living legend ❤️❤️
Awesome video and conclusions, wholeheartedly agree the D3 series is still a monster in photography. I sold my D4S for 2 D3S's, liking their file output better. In addition to better low light, would recommend D3S over D3 for better autofocus and deeper buffer when ripping off action shots
@@sabi57 D4s provides more cropping ability, better highlights, better auto WB, *slightly* better autofocus. D3s far superior 6400-25,600 ISO files, smaller file size, RAW files appear "sharper"
I'm currently trying a beautiful D4S. It's a phenomenal camera to pick up shoot with (the best controls & handling I've ever tried), but I agree - (my personal taste) the D3S files look much nicer SOOC and they don't require much work to get acceptable looking colours. The D4S files are somehow less appealing to me.
I totally agree! I picked up a D4 in 2019 for shooting soccer and couldn’t be happier. Well , as you said, a few more mega pixels would be nice, but I’ve not had a real problem.
The D3 series was among the best cameras Nikon ever made. I’ve s hot with 2 Nikon D700’s for the past ten years, and I love them. The D3S would be great to add to my camera bag. Great video!
The low light on this one is phenomenal. The best example was when i need to shoot in side the theater but not the stage but the crowds of thousands people. Not well lit but my god you can still recognized every body...
I have one which I purchased used 5 years ago and still my main camera, a full wedding with one battery is a huge plus and made me reconsider upgrade for a mirroless z6 after find out the battery do less then 500 clicks per battery.
I agree with everything mentioned. I purchased a Nikon D3s on eBay in 2019 for $1,000 with 6K shutter clicks. The real take away from this is the VALUE of the camera. Some of the events I shoot are tennis and dance. Both require high shutter speed to stop the action, good low light sensitivity, high frame rate and big buffer. I was surprised how clean the pictures are at ISO 12,800. I can easily get 2,000 pictures on one battery. That's the VALUE for me. If you don't need value, buy the latest and greatest. I use other cameras for other types of events. When I'm shooting studio shots, I would nerver use this camera (I use a Canon 5DS).
I have so much fun with my D700 lately I'm thinking about getting one. Personally I find 12MP challenging -- my bad cropping habits are accustomed to 36MP -- but part of the fun. Thanks for posting.
I loved my D3S so much I bought a second body. Took amazing sports pictures with them. Then I bought a D3X and that is my favourite camera of all time. I like cropping my sports pics, and a am choosey with my trigger finger, so I have captured even better shots that the D3S. The D3X is king, and I will be using it for a studio shoot next week. (Incidentally I also have sony, canon and Olympus, my favourite brand is Nikon.)
12MP is plenty for many many situations, especially when they are the kind of high quality pixels found in the D3s. And if you need more, for an enlargement, for example? Well, Topaz Gigapixel AI will enable you to upscale your images up to 600% with pretty remarkable quality. Which breathes new life into cameras like the D3s.
Pretty much why I still use a D3s. Being able to use Topaz or even Photoshop with some work you can enlarge images with next to no artifacts and be well beyond 20x30 print sizes with a digital crop. The Z6, DF and D3s are Nikon top high iso performing cameras in that order. I'm looking to purchase the DF as my everyday camera and keep the D3s as my main shooter for event work. I'm not that big a guy and I still don't understand how many consider the D3 series heavy. Maybe with some big lenses idk.
@@dct124 after d3s df's af will feel like it's sucks a bit too much... i like a lot my df for its size and its weels & knowbs, fuji boyz are raving about fuji ergonomics, but df had it all a few years before xts. but after using d7200 for 3yrs and now d500 df's af feels really slow quite ofter (especially in dimmer light). it's ok for street & portraits i think, i do a lot dancing parties in dimmer light, things are moving and flash is no-no 3/4 of the time, i use d500 when i can flash, but most of the time i can't, so, df's better iso is supposed to help, but inferior af almost kills the df's edge, i'd have to make 10 shots for a keeper (vs 3 with d500). that was to say, may be z6 is a better option today (sure, glass cost will define if you can afford it...), personally i stay with dslrs 'cuz in dim light dslr's viewfinders are still the best (oh, also z6's xqd only are evil expensive too)...
Actually the main reason I would choose the D3s over the D3 is the buffer. Nikon offered a buffer upgrade on the D3 where you would send it in and they would upgrade the buffer on the camera. There is no way to know if you are getting a D3 with a buffer upgrade unless the seller specifically knows it was serviced. I was doing some research not too long ago and I plan on picking up a D4/D4s (depending on price) because if has a far better buffer. My main working camera is a D750 and though the quality is great the buffer does not always keep up. The D3s has great output and I would pick one up if the price is right but for me I need the buffer of the D4.
I bought my Nikon D3s because I often work on the sets of film and television productions and very often I have to get usable images in low light. The camera delivers. Terry Thomas Stills & Specials Photographer Atlanta, Georgia USA
May 2024 I just bought myself a second D3s body. I saw one with only 37,000 shutter count and very clean looking so I grabbed it for £440 U.K. Also I sold my Z6 a few weeks back and bought an old D610 (which I lam liking much better than the Z6.) I just don’t like shooting with EVFs. Ps. Check out your D610 RAW files next to your D810 RAW files: they look almost identical with studio strobes.
Hi all great video, we have some 80 bodies, which include 2xd3 1xd3s 2 x d4 1 x d500 3 x d700 still love the d700's and as to reliability the d500 is just as good as the d3/s so if cash is a little tight the d700 is a great choice get a vertical grip and you can get 8/9 fps buying used gear is a great way to get the best bang for your buck, we have a d3 with 384,000 click on it and it is still going strong, another good investment is the d2x/s but as always depends how high you shoot, so instead of bumping up the ISO get faster glass.
@@TheProjectPhotography Hi the D4 and D500 are very good as a Nikon fanboy I/We love Nikon however we shoot a lot of other stuff we have 5 Canon 1D's in various flavours that are a joy to use.
I have and still use a D3 if I was to upgrade it would be a D3x or D3s....I never crop or shoot videos....my motto has always been get it right first time in camera! and its something other photographers should learn before switching brands or upgrading...
How would you compare the image output from the D4 vs D3S vs D3. Any different in image output between the three? I have the D700 and like its image output and character from the sensor.
@@ForeverYoung007 I believe the D700 uses a kodak sensor (please research) it's colours are very rich straight out of camera. The D3s is probably the best low light camera there is, 12 megapixel and 71.4 µm² pixel size, compared to the D4s which has 53.5 µm². Having said that you will only notice this at very high isos, I am not a fan of shooting at very high iso, therefore the winner for me is D4s. It is more comfortable than the D3s, better video 1080p vs 720p, better autofocus, bigger lcd screen to view images, 11fps vs 9fps, slightly more detail 16 megapixel vs 12 megapixel. You have to consider that the D700 and possibly the D3s' shutter replacement is obsolete, whereas the D4s shutter can still be replaced, if desired.
@@7LiquidSnake Which one had the best SOOC image out of the three? D700? I own the D700 and its great. I think the sensor manufacture was Panasonic from what I read. They said the D700 and original D3 used the same sensor, but just getting into looking at the D3S as some have said it had improved low light performance. Good point about the shutters being obsolete. Basically Im looking for the same type of D700 image sensor rendering but with a little bit better dynamic range and low light if that's possible!
I have D700 with Nikon grip , for my work has freelancer is fantastic , great cameras D3s & D700 , for back up just in case something happens D50 works verry good in day light , all of my lens are 2.8 and 1.8.
I have made 11x14 inch prints from a D40, 6 MP only. Only problem I ever had was water incursion from a leaking bottle when I took off the angle finder and did not replace the outside original one. It was replaced so I am back to two D3 and one D700.. D800E is incredible, but image is not better in my common 11x14 and smaller prints.
Iam a Wedding Photograper based in Germany and I use the Nikon D3s und D800 in 2020. D800 nice for Studio and photo shoots and D3s for story telling. Love the vertical grip, huge battery, button layout, tank like build. I would rather upgrade my D800 to a D850 than my D3s probably.
I'm using a D700 in 2021 and I'm looking to add a D3/D3s to my bag. I'd love to get a Nikon Z9 but for $5500 + Z lenses I just can't afford it. I'll keep using my Nikon's and lenses like my Sigma 150 f/2.8 HSM macro, Sigma 300 f/2.8 HSM, Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/4 VC-M lenses. These lenses are not compatible with the Z mount so why get rid of them when they work great with the F mount!
Hi, thanks for this video. Next week I want to buy my Nikon D3s. It is a restart of me in the digital photography age. In the past I shoot photos with analog cameras like Nikon FE2 and F4.
Hi, I used to have a D5000 to which i suffered badly when shooting weddings due to low light. So a few years ago I chose a D3s and only cost £600. Since then I have been nothing but impressed with the results. Even had a 20x30inch print done and it was flawless.
I know some photographers have a good reason to want and need high megapixel cameras, but I still think there are a lot of photographers who don't but think they do, and camera makers push this as a selling point. I have the D500 which is my main sports camera and I can crop the files from this, even though it's only 20 mp. I also have the D700 at 12mp, but this camera is mainly used for general day to day stuff that I can frame without the need for cropping. I'm now in the market for a D3s as a second sports camera, mainly for use with a 70-200mm for action that comes close, so also no need for (much) cropping. There are probably better choices, but I've always wanted one and the price of them now is excellent. Maybe an early birthday present to self next year. 😁
I just picked up a D3 (with apparently only 17k shutter actuations) for $275 and so far first impressions are great! It may be low shutter count, but I think I got a good deal on it because this thing looks like it went through a warzone condition wise lol. Functionally speaking nothing is broken though so meh who cares.
It's interesting very few shots, it's curious, really if it's very well priced, and how did it go with the autofocus? I have a d3400 and I love it very much, but you have to admit that it takes its time. And what about the menus? Are there too many functions or not enough? What lenses do you have and which ones do you use? I'd like to see some photos you've taken. And interesting that you went through a war zone, I think it was Vietnam hahaha. 😂😂😂 But I'm very happy,❤❤❤
I miss my D3s 😢😢😢 I upgraded a few years ago and somehow I still find that the images from my D3s have something special that I can’t achieve with my newer equipment...
I've had quite a similar dilemma, been tempted to look at new cameras for sports (mainly the d500). But I'm just reminded of how stellar the d3s is and the incredible output and I just can't switch, not even if I wanted to.
The D3/s and The EOS 1D MK4 are two great cameras I currently use The EOS 1 D MK4 but both are all you need both take older AF lenses and have last for years due to the solid construction . The sensors are good and image quality is better than any cropped sensors even today even The 1D mark 4 with it's 1.3 x crop you won't notice any difference to a full frame it had a hybrid sensor and a 102000 ISO the dynamic is great even in low light the menu may be a bit different to what you expect you just have to get used to it . The D 3s is a straightforward DSLR with a more easier menu if your not used to professional cameras and has basically the same specs . To choose one it a very tough choice I grabbed The Canon because it was available at the time used with a good PX I have no biased opinion about either camera just to let you know that I don't like to compare like other churlish remarks that "Camidiots" do on you tube.
@@TheProjectPhotography Read My comment I have the same ideal these older technology camera s have more going for them they are built to last and for photographer that know how to use their own skills instead of relying on too much technology . They can be found for a fraction of their new cost and they have been looked after also a fraction of the lastest type versions . I.E Canon EOS1D mk4 new cost 3750 GBP in 2010- today you can pick one up in mint condition for between 400-1000 depending how much ego related sellers and price they are charging -I bought mine for 399 GBP with all the original supplied accessories books CD software etc in mint condition from a chain high Street retailer plus a six month warrantee.
I did that with a Nikon D300 and bought a D7200 and found out the sensor can be subject to oil from the shutter and mirror assembly. I switched to Canon not that wanted to but had a a deal at the time I would like a brand new Nikon D300 or D 3 or D 700 ( or one version of them but they don't make them now. One point I will make DSLRs from about 2009-2012 approx was actually a milestone the cameras now are too gimmickry and this dont allow much scope for the photographer to use his own skill . You get these so-called reviewers thinking that they are the cream most of them are just promoting for their own vested and marketing interests. I am convinced that 16mp on a 1.3 crop hybrid sensor (EOS 1D mk4 ) is good enough even my Old Nikon D300 put out great images on 12mp . The older high end stuff is still hard to beat I have done commercial landscapes weddings architecture using these cameras and no client have questioned what gear I used so why bother listening to the photo snobs or marketing guru
I definitely agree in the sense that TH-camrs have great motivation to sell newer equipment because they get a payday from selling these products. The only cameras do just fine and when it comes to the Nikon/Canon flagship rivalry, it only depends on what ecosystem you're in. Both cameras do pretty much the same thing (generally speaking). I think people will be glad with these older gems and it helps when people point them out to other people to give them options.
I had the D7000 that I traded for my D3s. The D3s has more street cred than the D7000 but the weight is a consideraion. Your D7100 has about the same picture quality but if you are a pro you can't go wrong with ta D3s. It has a great focus but it will be like carrying a rifle into the battle. Both camera's are great but remember that the d7100 has a 24.1 mp sensor and is lighter. But 12.3 mp is not terrible. as long as you are filling a wedding album full of full page beautiful pictures the sensor will not be a big deal but the 24.1 mp, d7100 will be better for birds and things that you will want to crop.
You absolutely nailed it I have a D3 but I'm not photographing dugouts etc, 🤣 so the iso is fine, the color saturation is great I also have a D5600 24mp with flip screen...between the two I'm set...Thank you for illuminating
I disagree that the only difference from the D3 is high ISO. I think the original D3 focusing is good (but no better than the D700 focusing.) The D3s is IMO better than both and also has a new and improved sensor from the original. I think the improvements (which are likely to be in S&N firmware too) are MORE than just ISO. I think the D3s files render a bit more detail & colour than the other two at base ISO. I feel the D3s (if you can afford it) is like a D700 that has been working out at the gym and is now better all round.
Got a question....anybody can answer this.....if there is a sale on a D3s that the owner is asking $650 estimate (he does not want to bargain or go lower).....the body is mint condition and its about 30k per his estimate of clicks......should I buy it??? I already have my boss's D500 and my D700 which I am pleased although the D700 has a hotshoe problem (flash syncing).
one question, my nikon D3s is due for replacement. what do you suggest, a used nikon D4s or a used nikon D500. is for football, rugby and cycling. my lenses are nikon 300mm f2.8, tamron 70-200mm f2.8. nikon 200-500mm f5.6. thanks in advance. sorry for my less english. Belgium
If you need the reach I suggest a d500, being a DX body you'll get 1.5x more reach on your shots. But if that's not an issue a d4s would be excellent, I'm looking into buying a d4 over my d3s in the future and it's a great camera.
Tbh unless you need the megapixels, 1080p straight outta camera, and better low light AF then the D4/D4s is great. Otherwise just buy another D3s and get Topaz Gigapixel for enlarging images and video. The D3s has better low light iso performance than the D4/D4s. D3s 9fps (11fps DX) D4 10fps D4s 11fps (AE/AF) The real reason to get the D4s is better AF. That's pretty much the main reason pro sports shooters upgrade bodies. The D3s AF -1EV and the D4s AF -2EV plus it can shoot FX at 11fps and AE/AF, you can barely tell the difference between high ISO although it's their. It uses XQD
I agree with the Project Photography, if you need the reach or field of view then the d500 is great. Also the d500 has a tremendous buffer depth using Xqd, you can shoot 200 shots before the camera stops and then you press the button immediately again and the 200 shots starts over. The autofocus system is just shy of the d5, which is better. The d500 is 20.1 mega pixels, same as the d5 and for all intense purposes, it’s a baby d5 and you will get better crop ability. The files from a d4 are awesome and shooting at 12,800 are great, so the d4s should be equal. The Xqd will be upgraded to CF-express, which is even faster, unknown how this will improve overall performance. A used d500 is about 975.00 to 1100 dollars and a d4s is about 1800.00 to 2300.00. If you are looking for full frame with great pixel pitch then a d4s is hard to beat, but it’s too expensive as compared to a basic d4. If it were my money I would buy the d500 for sports, which I did and I use a d810 for my studio work. I will not lie and tell you that shooting at 12,800 just like the d3s, which I have also shot won’t be cleaner than a d500 because they will be, but the d500 has improved iso performance for sure. Good luck with your decision and I have always believed in a crop for sports, action and a full frame for everything else.
I have both, I use my D3x for landscapes/studio portraits and my D3 for photo documentaries. It really depends on what you'll be shooting. Both are legendary for their intended purposes, IMHO. Good luck!
what will be the best setting to get the best autofocus? AF-C Selection? AF-S Selection? Dynamic Area 51 points or 21? Need to adjust it for action sports and dont miss the focus on the shoots. Will appreciate your feedback
I am shooting my D3s for 11 years now. I am not a sports photographer, so my shuter count isn't that astronomical. I agree with most of what you said. Truth: This is the most rugged camera I ever had my hands on. It never let me down - not even a bit. One big advantage ist the use o CF cards. They just don't die, wheres SD cards do on a regular basis (I know from experience in my D800). There's two problems with the D3s. First: NPS dropped it. So you don't get the fast and cheap professional service any more, which really is a pity. Second: I am on my my third sleeving now. Nikon just doesn't get how to do this reliably. Apart from that: I open my beers with it. No kidding.
Back in 2008 when I was shooting weddings and events, I was using a D300 with a D200 as backup. The D3 arrived then and I ordered it from Nikon directly. It was like hitting a home run for me. Later the D700 came on the market and I grabbed one. It had the same sensor and had a 95% viewfinder but made a great second body. Both are built like tanks! I experimented to see if the 3D focus tracking was as good as I had read and it was... and still is. Colors seemed to be even better than previous bodies. When I got into model portfolios, I found it to be amazing. Both bodies rest in my equipment closet since I retired in 2012. NASA, by the way also ordered a batch of the D3. Now as a geezer, I use lighter D750 and Z7 for some shooting but if I ever got back to needing the earlier bodies for something else, I would. I never got interested in the D3s and wonder what the improvements were. By the way, 12 megapixels means larger pixels and larger pixels means an ability for your sensor to gather more light. Which means that they are great in low light.
I have a D3s, great camera. The main difference between is and the D3 is ISO performance and video. The D3s actually has better low light iso than the D4 and D4s. The D3s allowed you to go past iso 6400 up to about 25600 safely with minimal noise reduction with a good exposure. You could go higher honestly.
I have a quick question for Nikon D3s: After I set the mode setting dial to "LV", and then press shutter release button all the way down, the Live View is on, but I can not press the camera button to photography. Please advise what I did wrong. Thank you.
D3s and D4s user here. What I missed the most on the D4s is the back button from D3s which let switch between Af area (spot/area/auto)! A very bad décision. My D3s also have a craked front body but still working fine. On sport subjects, I use it as a very handfull second body (fish eye 10-17 and 24mm) whereas the D4s does the job with 200/f2.
Can you, or have you already, done a How-To video on using this camera? I have been shooting a d3200 and recently bought a D3S and am completely intimidated and can't find a good how-to video to take advantage of all the features I need.
I haven't done a how to video for the D3s yet and I honestly haven't thought about doing one. That's quite the upgrade tho, going from a D3200 to a D3s is a pretty big jump. I'd honestly recommend going around and shooting and just experimenting with the various features. I felt like the camera was very straight forward and easy to use but if you don't think so then I'd be more than happy to help you through it. You can message me on insta @the_project_photography1 if you have any questions.
It is and put shame on the D800 overpriced and plagued with numerous problems not to mention the D600 I get furious when I see people trying to sell it far as I'm concerned a scam when you trying to sell a camera that you know has problems and don't say anything about it
What abou z9?
@@RodolphosTechchannel What about it?
Is the viewfinder good for (reading) glass wearers ?
Recently got a D3s to go with my D500. Makes the D500 feel like a toy. Not fussed about lugging around that pro body because it's a pleasure to use. He's a heavyweight boxer with killer reflexes, machine-gun shutter, and the results are always awesome. The D500 is a greyhound: Tight, light and just as fast. They both have their strengths, and feel like thoroughbreds at their own game. Great video. Greetings from Australia.
I'm still using one in 2023. Just did a high volume corporate portrait session last week. 100% success! No problem at all.
These cameras never miss a beat.
I use a D700 and D3, for events in all conditions, long days, these cameras kick ass!! Battery life, picture quality and file sizes is GREAT
The d700 is a camera that I've been wanting to check out for a while now. 8fps with battery grip? Sign me up!
I don't shoot stills professionally anymore but if I did, I've said numerous times I could make a decent living even now with a Canon 5D (orig) and a 1D Mk. IIn. Are you limited to CF card size?
You can make a living with any camera, it all depends on you as the photographer. Are you referring to the limit in CF card size for the D3s?
@@TheProjectPhotography I`m still using my semi-professional D700 + MB-D10 since 2009 under all conditions without any issues and I`ve no need to update or change - the built-in pop-up flash and its i-TTL flash control with off-camera i-TTL flashes (CLS) is amazing - I`m an enthusiastic hobbyist and "strobist" since the 1980s and not interested in video
@@TheProjectPhotography if you ever use one, you’ll understand why the D700 is legendary.
Probably wouldn't want my d3s to stop a bullet for me but yeah the thing is a tank haha
I have the D3, 13yrs old! This video made me want to keep it now and just get a 2nd body.
Bought one last Christmas and its a spectacular camera for someone looking to get into the professional scene!
I just purchased a D3s online based on your testimonial! I used to own a D2x and loved it! I too enjoy the professional style cameras they do perform and feel great. A joy to use. I’ll give more feedback after it arrives next week!
Aye that's awesome, I promise you won't be disappointed. Let me know how you like it!
Huh okay sounds good, I actually love manual focus lenses. Manual focus on my Z6 is so amazing, I'll keep an eye out for that then.
Fully support! Bought D700 in 2019, enjoying it!
@@fredericmartinez3807 it normally a 1k price difference or more. I would not consider than a minor difference.
I can't believe it's 10 years old now! I remember the day it was launched and I was so mesmerized by it.
I know right? Still a beast even now days.
I bet u still remembered the bears video when Nikon promoted low-light ability on D3s right :)
4k tvs make me dizzy 😵
I've got two of them, they're the best! Just got a D4 as well, but SO happy with the D3s', they're king.
Looks like its in great condition. I just bought a D700 as backup (excellent condition) Love the classics.
Glad to hear you upgraded! My batteries are on it's last leg to and they run out pretty quickly.
What are your use cases for each? Do you feel the D3 there any significant differences between D3 to D4s? How about D750?
Thabk you, sir
What's the main difference between the D3 on the DS I might have found a D3 with 160000 shutter count $400 and debating it
I got the D850 after shooting with the D3 for over ten years.
Agreed! On May the 6th 2021, I switched to D700 from D600. 12 MP? no big deal !
For sport shooting, may I suggest the D3' s little brother the D300 . The APSC crop factor is a blessing when it comes to boosting your telephoto lens reach without sacrificing image quality, The out put of the D300 is up there with the D3, and the D700.
I actually saw the eBay listing I bought my D3 from in your video. Wild! I loved this vid. It helped solidify my confidence in buying it. Thanks!
Haha how ironic, you're going to love the camera and I hope you enjoy it!
Although I have newer Nikon models, I have 2 D3s cameras and a D700. I bought them on eBay with very low shutter counts. I use them more often than the newer ones and love the results.
A solid performer! Works great for portraits and weddings!
Thanks for a great review! I'm really interested in shooting with Nikon cameras, so this helped a lot.
I bought a Nikon D3 and still use it. Mine has about 9,600 shutter actuations and in near mint condition. These cameras are amazing sharp, clear and workhorses. I use it for almost everything. I still use my D800 for weddings. I think the D3 excels in having just the right file size.
12Mp definitely generates a very nice file size, 9600 shutter clicks is practically brand new now days for a d3
Spot on mate I’ve had my D3s from new ive used and abused it so much it’s never once let me down I shoot sports in all weathers news jobs events landscapes weddings astro everything and this beast delivers with no fuss it’s a living legend ❤️❤️
I’ve been in love with it for over a decade!!!
Awesome video and conclusions, wholeheartedly agree the D3 series is still a monster in photography. I sold my D4S for 2 D3S's, liking their file output better. In addition to better low light, would recommend D3S over D3 for better autofocus and deeper buffer when ripping off action shots
Definitely agree, the D3s just doesn't compare to anything else.
how’s the d3s against the d4s ?
I was just looking at these an di guess cookies and algorithms got me here. Love the content. Subbed!!!
Aye I'm glad it did because now you get to watch more of my awesome content haha. Thank you tho, I very much appreciate it.
I still loved my D3s camera and its 2021, still beating new updated cameras
The D3 series was among the best cameras Nikon ever made. I’ve s hot with 2 Nikon D700’s for the past ten years, and I love them. The D3S would be great to add to my camera bag. Great video!
The low light on this one is phenomenal. The best example was when i need to shoot in side the theater but not the stage but the crowds of thousands people. Not well lit but my god you can still recognized every body...
I have one which I purchased used 5 years ago and still my main camera, a full wedding with one battery is a huge plus and made me reconsider upgrade for a mirroless z6 after find out the battery do less then 500 clicks per battery.
great reveiw! I have the Nikon D1H which shots about 2.7 MP and it is enough for a casual shooter!
I still use a D2H and compareed with D700...the D2H afer post-process...it has better skin tone IMHO...
I bought one at an estate sale for $50. It works rather well and provides another option in my kit.
I have so much fun with my D700 lately I'm thinking about getting one. Personally I find 12MP challenging -- my bad cropping habits are accustomed to 36MP -- but part of the fun. Thanks for posting.
I have a 700 and let me tell you....sharpness!! but there's someone selling a d3s for $750....I would love it but also watching my budget
I love my D3. I still shoot with my D3, F5 and my Pentax Z-1, which I use for B&W film with a 50mm f/1.4 SMC lens.
I have one and I love it.that twelve megapixel produce some beautiful images it's a beast of a camera
I love all of my Nikon's but the D3s is special. Liked and subscribed.
I purchased a Canon 5D Mk II as a backup to my D3 back in 2008, to handle hi res. 😊
Got one and love it also. I have z6 and 850. All are brilliant. Would not want to be without them.
Full day wedding and battery still at over 50%!!!
Battery is just like huge power house ...
Lol i wish my Canon 700D could do that too
PS/LR CC has a program for raw files (ACR) that enlarges the picture 4x area, ie 2x length & width. It works well.
I bought my Nikon D3s because I often work on the sets of film and television productions and very often I have to get usable images in low light. The camera delivers.

Dang, sounds like you got a solid kit there. Would love to have a d4 and a d500, both are incredible.
I sold mine for a D4, then later a D4s....I miss the f**k out of the D3s and my D700...absolute legend cameras, full stop
@@ForeverYoung007 straight out of camera, I'd say D700
@@7LiquidSnake Alright thanks
personaly own a D3 only down side is that low megapixel count but otherside its absolutly lovely❤️
I have one and totally agree.
I have D700 with Nikon grip , for my work has freelancer is fantastic , great cameras D3s & D700 , for back up just in case something happens D50 works verry good in day light , all of my lens are 2.8 and 1.8.
D700 with a grip makes it an absolute beast, 8 fps with the grip is pretty crazy for 2008 and still works great now days.
D700 / D3s are icons….. getting back into photography and eyeballing a D3s going into 2022
Iam a Wedding Photograper based in Germany and I use the Nikon D3s und D800 in 2020.
I would add video & live view. I used live view in macro studio table work. I was hooked on the D3 FX finder when I 1st used it. (:
To choose one it a very tough choice I grabbed The Canon because it was available at the time used with a good PX
I have no biased opinion about either camera just to let you know that I don't like to compare like other churlish remarks that "Camidiots" do on you tube.
I am looking at the D3 or D3s as an upgrade to my D7100. I shoot mostly action sports, soccer and badly lit basketball.
Can't go wrong with either one. My D3s puts in work, especially in low light
Definitely D3s over D3. There was a big improvement in low light (high ISO) performance (up to two stops at high end of ISO.
I've got yesterday a d700 as a second body for my Z7 (more because I like it, than I really need it 😄 )
I wouldn’t be surprised if the D700 became your fav.
I bought a D700 last year. I love it. I do have to say that my Z6 performs better when it comes to picture quality. I like the output much better.
D3 have a good price. Thinking about this camera for my first full frame. In this moment i have a D90.
This was a great camera when I owned it. This sensor is in my top 5 from Nikon.
You absolutely nailed it I have a D3 but I'm not photographing dugouts etc, 🤣 so the iso is fine, the color saturation is great I also have a D5600 24mp with flip screen...between the two I'm set...Thank you for illuminating
How do you like the quality of the D5600..?? I heard its excellent......
I used to have one and I loved it!
Great video. You’ve earned a subscriber.
Thank you, I very much appreciate it.
Honestly that's a good kit. The d700 and d3 have the same af system so performance wise you'd be cool
The first professional camera body I bought was a Nikon D3, sadly three years later her time is done. I loved and I’m sad to see it go:(
one question, my nikon D3s is due for replacement. what do you suggest, a used nikon D4s or a used nikon D500. is for football, rugby and cycling. my lenses are nikon 300mm f2.8, tamron 70-200mm f2.8. nikon 200-500mm f5.6. thanks in advance. sorry for my less english. Belgium
If you need the reach I suggest a d500, being a DX body you'll get 1.5x more reach on your shots. But if that's not an issue a d4s would be excellent, I'm looking into buying a d4 over my d3s in the future and it's a great camera.
snapsort.com/cameras/Nikon/D3S/competitors
Tbh unless you need the megapixels, 1080p straight outta camera, and better low light AF then the D4/D4s is great.
Otherwise just buy another D3s and get Topaz Gigapixel for enlarging images and video. The D3s has better low light iso performance than the D4/D4s.
D3s 9fps (11fps DX)
D4 10fps
D4s 11fps (AE/AF)
The real reason to get the D4s is better AF.
Derek Smith Thanks for sharing this link...
OK, managed to get one for US$ 250. 177k sc though. Body in great condition. Fingers crossed the shutter will not bail on me in the coming weeks.
Love my d4 still... For Events
Absolutely fantastic ... I am missing my D4 but, I do have still D3 since 2008 ...
I plan to buy a used Nikon D3x or D3. In terms of their features, which one would recommend please ?
I have both, I use my D3x for landscapes/studio portraits and my D3 for photo documentaries. It really depends on what you'll be shooting. Both are legendary for their intended purposes, IMHO. Good luck!
Was not sure if i want to buy d4 or d3s. Will be a d3s + a new lens now :)
Wise decision!! Best camera ever!
Just got one today. Love it.
what will be the best setting to get the best autofocus? AF-C Selection? AF-S Selection? Dynamic Area 51 points or 21? Need to adjust it for action sports and dont miss the focus on the shoots. Will appreciate your feedback
I use dynamic area 21 with 11 selectable autofocus points to get around faster
No kidding.
I bought D3s a week back with 12000 shutter actuation for 650 bucks.
Is there a difference in build quality between D3 & D2X?
The best 35mm film camera I ever had was the Nikon F5.
Would like to see examples of Auto focus in real time / Portrait work etc. Thanks.
Man a d3 in 2008 woulda run you a pretty penny back then haha.
The Project Photography - Five grand... paid for by brides’ families.
Does that logic apply for Nikon D40 with apsc sensor and 6 mp resolution ? How about a D2x ?
saurav basu - I have no idea. The pixels would be tiny but that’s all I know never owning either. But maybe someone else here could tell you.
Two great cameras Nikon D3/s and Canon EOS 1D mk4 you don't need any thing else
Fully agree though I still use Canon 5d mk2 ,7D ,& 7D Mk2 If it aint broke why change?
I use mine every weekend for pee wee football fantastic camera I still print 20 by 30 metal prints from 12 MP no problem
I have a quick question for Nikon D3s: After I set the mode setting dial to "LV", and then press shutter release button all the way down, the Live View is on, but I can not press the camera button to photography. Please advise what I did wrong. Thank you.
I have now 2 nkon d3s's and 2 nikon d700s
D3s and D4s user here. What I missed the most on the D4s is the back button from D3s which let switch between Af area (spot/area/auto)! A very bad décision.
My D3s also have a craked front body but still working fine. On sport subjects, I use it as a very handfull second body (fish eye 10-17 and 24mm) whereas the D4s does the job with 200/f2.
Great review!
