    • @pjpredhomme7699
      @pjpredhomme7699 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can vividly remember people always questioning why Hyman was on the first line with Mathews - even saying he does not have the skill to be playing with him -and Babcock would say how good of a hockey player Hyman was over and over again . That is the thing with Babcock - he definitely had his favorites and he would do everything for them . And there are a lot of stories of how cruel he was to anyone else. Comparing him to Detroit is pointless - there he had 3 players that were all timers -they worked hardest and were completely self disciplined- Lidstrom, Datsyuk and Zetterberg - all Babcock could do is get in their way - and he was wise enough not to . Those players steered the ship most of the way while he was there - he certainly had his favorites there too and was very cruel and sadistic to others that he could - but that teams core rose above it . He always seemed to want to feature less talented players the idea being to show how brilliant a coach he was, that is what it seemed. His last couple years in Detroit he was completely infatuated with Luke Glendenning - he got more toi than any forward

    Mike Babcock’s ego is much larger than his effectiveness as a coach. He got a lucky break to coach a stacked Detroit team to one cup.
    Scotty Bowman won eight cups….. and is 5 times more humble than Babcock.

    • @pjpredhomme7699
      @pjpredhomme7699 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      absolutely on the ego - lucky to coach a stacked team ? Can't agree with you there - When Scotty retired they all said -"anyone can win with that team" and the anyone they chose was Dave Lewis and they got knocked out of the playoffs early 2 years in a row- Babs is a good coach he is very prepared and runs a pretty tight ship - but has some real character issues - and as far as Scotty - there will never be another he is a very humble man for all he accomplished and still so sharp even today at 88 - if you listen to him talk he has not skipped a beat

    Thing is Babcock is a brilliant coach. But he preaches the same sermon day after day. Its a good thing its gets the players into a certain mentality. But after 6-8 years of the same thing it starts to fall on deaf ears. He was amazing with the job he did in Detroit. I know he coached longer there, but the point is after so many years you saw it start to fall off. And thus he was done there. Coaches have to keep it fresh. But if you ever get a coach like this, listen to him. They know what they are doing. Your career will go much further. Game On!

    • @urbanpeltier1622
      @urbanpeltier1622 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Brilliant coach who never played Marner Matthews together at all took minutes away from the leagues best scorer
      Preferred stretch passes and "heavy" hockey.
      He was good at one point but his ego and inability to adapt towards the higher skill and faster pace game dug his grave as a coach.
      He preferred the hard way of doing things his players didnt. Making players do stupid things and creating turmoil in the dressing room is the sign of a bad coach. Good riddance the Leafs were able to spread their wings and fly immediately once Babcock left. Once again good riddance.

      It's well known within hockey circles no one liked Babcock. It's possible to be a hard ass coach without being a total scumbag. Apparently Babcock went out of his way to even treat cleaners and arena personnel like shit, without a good reason. Who the hell does that? What the hell does cleaners and arena personnel have to do with his coaching? It's not about him being a mean coach, it's about him being a scumbag person.

      I do not know if many of the people on here were around when Grapes coached - but - as coaches he and Babs could not be any more different. Cherry was the absolute "players" coach he knew that players play the game and his success was going to be tied to getting his best out of his players- so he was all about encouraging - he definitely had his "type " of players but he bent over backwards to make them the stars and give them the credit . Babs has always approached players as fortunate to be under his brilliance - he no doubt prepares them and can make them better - but their coaching styles are night and day .
