    These guys are a great addition to the series and provide an engaging episode. I had a good friend who worked his entire life on a fishing boat as the ship's engineer. He would say that he probably rebuilt the entire ship at least once in his 30 year career. He was joking of course but stuff was always breaking and needing replacement. The North Sea is no place to have a ship in poor repair. Looks like you will have an almost new Flying Coney by the time you are done.

    A major advantage of running a TH-cam channel about your restoration project; as long as you've filmed it, you now have a comprehensive video manual of the service and maintenance procedures for training and reference for any crew who comes on board in the future.

    Be nice to add a bypass valve that connects one hydronic piston to other for use when wanting an emergency manual tiller. Would make it a lot easier to operate.

    Finding something broken, while you are fixing something else, is normal for restoring things. I'm renovating a 57 year old wooden trawler. It's been just one thing after another, while discovering and fixing other problems . Almost two years into it, and we still aren't done.
    Good luck with your adventure.

    Gear box change - while empty, might want to add a quarter turn ball valve to the drain instead of just a plug. Make sure it is the kind of valve which has a LOCK on the handle so that it can only be turned with two intentional motions and cannot open by itself through vibration or accidentally whacking the handle.

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's exactly what Derek had suggested! Since we needed to get it done, unfortunately there wasn't enough time to get a suitable valve. But next time we need to do an oil change we will ad an oil change system. Both, for the gearbox and the main engine.

    That's awesome you got a couple volunteers with good skills, like Derek, and the guy with the mop for a hair do LOL, to help with the work on the gearbox and the steering system that's a huge bonus for you guys.You need to check that metal under the steel flange where the steering mechanism is, to make sure it doesn't need to be grinded off and then treated with metal rust converter to help it stop from rusting up. It looks like it needs to be treated.

    Hey guys , great vid .
    It's so nice to see some skilled volunteers doing essential work on the gearbox & tiller systems , that adjustment on the tiller rams was well spotted , now it's safe again , and also works to full travel as it should.
    It would be really cool if a few more shipwrights or tradesman would volunteer to help cut through some of the high skilled work .
    Best wishes to all.

    Watching this project from the start I have come to the opinion that their are many levels of being a hero, firstly the hero who has the dream to see a boat in need of love, then the hero who has the compulsion to support that dream financially as a patron, subscriber or donor and yet again the hero who is prepared to get off their bum and use their skills, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic or manually to help the dream come true. To all those heroes out there, well done and a huge thank you for helping out, without you, your skill and time, projects like this would not come true……heroes, maybe legends would be a better word.

    The only advantage to the rudder shaft grease pot is that once filled, you can just screw it in to add grease to the shaft. Eventually you will need to re-fill the grease pot. It might be much easier to fill the grease pot with a putty knife from the drum instead of filling grease gun, and then just using it to fill the grease pot. Another alternative might be to put a zert in the grease pot, then you can screw out the grease pot, fill with grease with the grease gun, and go back to screwing in the pot until it is empty. Several options here.

    Great progress and very useful work achieved. A bit academic now but the oil extractor pump must have been defective (leaking seal on the ‘pressure vessel?) - there is never a need to pump continuously- just a few pumps to build up the vacuum and this will pull the oil out, of course you may have to repeat the cycle a few times depending on how much oil needs to be transferred. Spare parts for these pumps are readily available.

Now in the refit we can work together to rebuild a magnificent sailing ship and shortly we will be able to teach the skills needed to maintain and repair a steel boat. Once the sails are up we can sail her together all around the globe.

    • @SavingMaverick55
      @SavingMaverick55 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was gonna ask if they could've just replaced the cup with a standard grease nipple... That cup method seems like a very old school way of greasing a mechanical component. It reminded me of those little oil cups you see on top of the joints on a steam engine.

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What we're doing at the moment is we're maintaining and getting the systems back working properly. Once we've achieved that we're trying to improve things. For example we've planned to add an oil change system for the engine, generator and gearbox. But that doesn't mean we can skip maintenance until we have it.

      @clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They may be able to just tap the cup to take a standard grease nipple .. but fit an 45 deg angle take off type so you can easier fit the guns nozel on .

    • @Iainb1954
      @Iainb1954 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@FlyingConey Nothing wrong with the grease cup, except the time it takes to 'fill' the shaft. Grease nipple would be quicker is all. Actually better to have the cup there, more likely to get a wee tweak now and then, than having to go and get the grease gun! You'll have a similar system on the prop-shaft, if it's easily accessible for an occasional turn, so much the better...
