I learned more about growing tomatoes this morning from this video than I have in the past 75 years. This is the best tomato video on TH-cam by far. Thanks.
John Hard, I was thinking the same thing. I am 65 years old and I spent many, many, many years out in the garden with my daddy. And I continued on throughout life. This is the most instructional video I have ever seen about tomatoes.
I am doing herbs and some vegetables now. It’s so exciting. Check out my fresh edible arrangement from my herbal garden.💕 th-cam.com/video/_ILY0LKjGwA/w-d-xo.html
Best tomato feast of my life: 60 years ago my siblings and I got off school and went home. Mama seemed extra frazzled, but sweeping her hair back with a tomatoes hand, she announced, “I have just canned my last jar full of tomatoes, and I have no more jars. You kids scurry on out to the tomato patch and eat your fill, as I don’t want to waste those tomatoes.” We rushed out to her tomato plot, about 40 feet square, sat down and ate our way along the rows. Best tomato haul ever. This was in Pleasant View, Utah, about 1963/1964. I have grown tomatoes almost every chance I get, and I’m still growing them, broken-backed, on my kitchen counter in a small hydroponic garden my son bought me for a “ love” gift a few years back. Tomatoes fresh off the vine is still my favorite way to eat them.

I have been watching and learning a lot from you. Thank you so much. Please keep doing it. Take care always. From Philippines here.
Jess it’s so funny to watch videos from 5 years ago and hear the difference in younger you and a little bit older wiser you. Motherhood, your farm and life has turned you into a healer. I’ve watched all the recent videos so I’m watching all of the older ones now. I listen to you while I do my morning garden chores. And each time you bless me I tear up a little, don’t know why. Made me think I was pregnant one time, I was like why am I crying over this? Wasn’t pregnant though 😅👍🏼 Thank you for all these videos, I literally can’t get enough.
I'be tried to grow tomatoes all my life, and I'm 70. Last year I bought a plant that yielded a lot of really tasty cherry tomatoes but I see from this video, they could have been a lot better. Thank you so much for the great info. I want to find the little yellow ones to see if I can grow them as sweet as the local farmers market people do. They're like candy!! Thank you again.
I thought I had watched all of Jess's videos. This is one I hadn't and will look for others not seen. She is a great inspiration for gardening as well as life in Jesus Christ.

I have been gardening nearly all my life. This video is 3yrs old and I've watched every year, even experienced growers can glean nuggets of info. I really appreciate Jess as she shows The Good The Bad and The Ugly of gardening.
If I could give an award for the most informative tomato growing information it would go to you, hands down. Thanks so much for taking the time and doing the research for us, I am looking forward to the best-tasting tomatoes I have ever grown thanks to you. I am sharing this video on facebook.
I always rewatch this video whenever i feel like I'm doing something wrong with my tomatoes. I got into gardening around 3 years ago when i was 16😊. Same as you, i didnt really understand why people garden since we can buy most of the stuff that grows from starts from home depot. But now I'm really passionate about gardening ❤. It's rare for people in my generation to value plants and nature but you always make it seem so relaxing and calming. Thank you for being my inspiration 🤗
What a delightful young woman. And she knows her stuff! Mum must be very proud. Her beautuful healthy face is testament to her teachings regarding her food crops. I'm from Australia and we do have some tuff country women as well. Keep up the good work. You are or should be an inspiration for lots of young girls. Maureen,.
Alice Rabbit WHO are YOU to pass judgment on this woman?! You don’t know her story and shouldn’t pretend to! You CAN know this for certain however...you WILL be judged in the same manner...make no mistake about that! YOU....are the one who should repent!
An elderly gentleman I used to help out had beautiful 8 foot tomato plants every year. He tied them to poles with nylons and placed each plant and pole inside a metal coffee can with both ends cut off. He said it stopped the slugs and let him fertilized each plant better. He pruned them as well.
I am positively mesmerized by your amazing gift of delivering information in a memorable fashion that makes all the difference between retaining information or not
Blossom end rot easy fast fix is put lime in the soil. I and everyone I know puts lime in the soil at the very beginning. Also mix with fertilizer when feeding your plants through the growing season. 🙂 I'm 64 years old. Been growing vegetables a long time. You made a nice video with easy to understand information. Great job. ❤
Jess here in the U K we have a long established gardening programme called Gardening World hosted by Monty Don. He is brilliant....but you take this subject to another level. Your vocal delivery without an Autocue is unbelievable, how do you do it?. He (Mony) rambles on, God bless him, You, however, adhere the watcher to the screen and it is information complete without you looking away from the camera. Your delivery is rapid. You are ripe for the TV screen, easy on the eye, intelligent, factual, it comes across that you know your stuff. I guarantee that if you were hosting a British TV gardening show it would rock right to the top. Or, you could become a supermodel and WOW the entire globe with your fantastic looks. I think you could accomplish both these things and I think you are beginning to realize just that. You are so natural.
@Roots and Refuge Farm, Jess no problem I bet it is what 4.9k subscribers on your channel think as well as I. A national TV career for you is written in the stars.
Ha ha I just said the same thing before I saw your post!! Its also her filming tecnique and manner, aside from the information being well presented and scripted the whole "production value" really holds your interest!
Summary: 1. Sizes(small to large): currant, cherry, salads, pastes, slicers. 2. Types: determinate, indeterminate. Heirloom (handed down and consistent), hybrid (open pollinated is key!) 3. Problems: leaf curl (water stress). Wilts and spots (may be blight early on). Cat face faceted blossoms (super blossoms). Blossom end rot (lack of calcium and overwatering). Tomato horn worms (black light tip important). Cracking from inconsistent and shallow watering. 4. Flavour: growing for flavour depends on colour (red is acidic, yellow sweet, black and purple umami). Use molasses for optimal flavour late in season. 5. Harvesting. Best time is in the afternoon. Don't refrigerate and eat ripe. Key Habits => Spacing, pruning, watering from bottom, mulching, aspirin spraying.
You just summed everything up in a nutshell. I was trying to remember everything she said so I would have that perfect tomato sandwich, but it was too much information at once. I'm going to print off your comment and use it as my cheat sheet...much easier. TY TY TY!!
Jess, because of you I became more confident as a gardener, I'm going into the 4th year now and watch this video every single year, multiple times! You're the best! Love, from The Netherlands 💚🇳🇱
18:00 a trick I learned to quickly extracting calcium from egg shells to get some crushed egg shells (the finer the more surface area) and soak them in some vinegar for a few hours. the vinegar reacts with the egg shells and release CO2 bubbles and leaves the calcium extract in the vinegar solution. I normally dilute it in a 5 litre (1 gallon I think) watering can and water my flowering tomato flowers
I love all your tips and techniques. I have learned so much from your videos. The one tip for tomatoes that I did not see and did not read in my brief overview of comments is planting basil with your tomatoes. It serves 2 + purposes. 1. Most important is it helps drastically ward off horn worms. The first time I tried it I planted basil with my tomatoes I has almost no worm activity I had a crop of self sowned roma's pop up(incomplete composting) which did not get basil and they were massacred by horn worms. 2. Basil improves the flavor of your tomatoes! 3. You get a highly useful savory herb to add to your kitchen. It dries well it freezes well and it is amazing chopped fresh with those tomatoes drizzled with a bit of balsamic vinaigrette. Yum. If you haven't tried this yet give it a go next season on your new farm! 4. If you are selling crops at the farmers market you get a bonus crop to sell. Last year I had so much basil I was just throwing it in the compost because I was not selling at the market but I truly could have. It was a (throw away crop)planted specifically to organically support my tomatoes
Tomato sandwich lover here. I’ve fancied mine up with thin slices of sweet onion, thin length-wise slices of cucumber and thin sliced avocado. Messy and yummy.
This is possibly one of the best descriptions of *Tomato issues* what a pleasant voice to listen to, explanations were clear, and showing imperfect moments gives hopes to "Non Home Steaders" rather the average person wanting to plant a few tomatoes on their porch, or yard, it gives excellent advice! Well done! I am following now. I'm a Green Thumb gal always looking to learn more about growing. Thank you! ~ a simple bird.
I have been gardening for years and am double your age, however, I love watching your videos and have learned a lot of valuable information. You know how we elderly or "old school" people can be quite set in our old ways. So with this said, I absolutely love your videos, not to mention, you have a very nice, friendly, and easily understandable video presence.
I've seen a lot of tomato tutorials, none as good as this one, you're a good teacher, very informative and you made it so interesting, I can't wait to try some of your tips. Thanks so much
This was the first video I watched for roots and refuge, and since then you are my go to favourite channel. I love your willingness to share knowledge, your passion for your family, the Lord and your farm. Thank you for this channel. I truly appreciate every video x
This video never gets old...seeing your videos daily, you tend to forget how the garden/property used to look...amazing how far things have come today..can't wait to see where the next garden takes you...❤❤🙏🙏
This is what I learned about BER: during drought the plants cannot take up calcium, after heavy rainfall its leached from the soil. I tried different products from lime to gypsum and nothing really worked for me until using crab shell from Neptune's Harvest (23% Ca + Mg), this also was a treatment for Root Knot Nematodes that injured my plants.. After building the soil with organic material, crab shell, azomite, worm castings and fish fertilizer + Kelp, my garden was thriving. People walking down the road would comment about the jungle growing in what was once grass.. I usually get 3" of rain after a long drought in July, it destroys my tomato crop until fall.
Thank you! It has been many years so I gardened. My mother loved to plant enough tomatoes for the whole county, along with every thing else. I worked the garden. I am now a homeowner in the country and my mom has passed so I am starting over. Very informative video. Your garden is absolutely beautiful.
Video 4 yrs old- but newbie here! What a fantastic video. Very informative and to the point. Saved to rewatch until I master my garden. Thank you! Blessings to you and yours and all the fellow gardeners out there. Stay safe everyone! 🍅❤️🌻
I wish i could thumbs up this video a 100 times ! I grabbed my garden notebook and wrote down so much information for my growing season next year! Thank you for sharing !!!
Your channel is what started my gardening journey 3 years ago and I always come back to learn more. I love love love your honestly, humbleness and knowledge on gardening. Your truly badass!! I only hope someday to be as successful of a garden er as you are.
I know nothing about gardening. 67 and just retired. We will be using your tips for sure in our learning 'how to'. Love your sleeve- very colorfull. Got a couple myself.
And I thought she had put tattoo's on here arm. I hope it was just a "sleeve" then, because I was like...ugh! I do hate people to ruin their skin with those things. And she's so pretty, she shouldn't ruin herself with that ugly nose ring either...I say "ugh" on that, too!
Wow! So thorough and helpful. I learned so much! I learned SO much! One thing I was taught was to bury a 1/2 gallon plastic pot in the grind next to my plants and water into that rather than the soil. Since tomatoes have really deep roots, it helps to get water all the way down through the root system.
I form a dish with the soil around the base of stem I think called a basin. Works great for a number of plants especially in early season and plastic free garden! Enough micros in the soil has to stop somewhere! Just read here somewhere grandpa used a coffee can, unwashed would also provide a little nitrogen
Like all her videos Jess delivers! I've watched her videos for years and she is a huge reason we took the plunge into homesteading and youtube although still in the earlier stages of vlogging we're loving the jouney! This video is fantastic(I love all of them) but this is a great resource to refer to for newbies and seasoned gardeners alike! Thank you Jess for both inspiration and information!!
THANK YOU! When I pick my produce from the garden this year, I’ll give YOU fhe credit for your instructions in this video. I wish I could talk that easily to the camera. The lens loves you and I just know we would be fast friendfs if we lived close together. I’m in North Carolina. You are very talented and have a wealth of knowledge to share, and I truly thank you for that.
I seldom watch a TH-cam video over 5-6 minutes. But I could not stop watching. This video was so educational, and the way you delivered the information you are a natural. You show your passion for the subject.
I’ve been growing tomatoes for years and I just learned everything I was doing wrong. Thanks for doing all of the research and making this video. I’m looking forward to my best salsa ever after watching this and I am sure that I will refer back to your knowledge during the growing season.
I’m only half way through and I have learned so much already! You answered everything that went wrong with my garden last year. As a first time gardener, I pretty much got tons of leaves and absolutely no fruit.
I’ve been binge watching TH-cam gardening videos all day and this is by far my favorite. Love the relaxed honesty and clear knowledge and the sound of nature in the background is soooo relaxing. Thank you!!
Malcolm Small I bought wild Galapagos tomatoes that are grape size. They sprawled everywhere, produced bucketfulls, and this year I am finding them all over the yard. In suspect the chickens helped in that regard.
my neighbor ended up with some of our tomatoes that had gone through the fence. the next year, he had some just coming up here and there and also had a potted one. the ones that had had come up here and there, he didn't pamper like the one in the pot. The one in the pot didn't do as well.
I can relate, I had a beautiful Tomato plant that volunteered last year and the year before. They produced tons of fruit that was just as sweet and beautiful as the year before.
Back in my childhood, my Dad grew tomatoes and they were so big, when people asked for a pound of tomatoes, Dad would have to cut them in half. True story. The brand at that time in Australia, was called "Gross Lise". Massive tomatoes.
A few years ago my husband and I got tomato plants that we planted in containers. He kept putting more and more Miracle Gro on his, and I kept gently hinting that it might be too much, but he wouldn’t listen. My plants produced lots of tomatoes, but his plants got HUGE but didn’t produce anything. He lets me handle the gardening stuff for the most part now.
I don’t know what miracle grow is but I won’t do it. And never try and tell us anything. We sometimes have to fail. We are logical animals. And let us fail to see why
I live in Little Rock, AR. I am jumping in this year and planting MY very first garden. My mom grew up on a farm and use to garden all of the time, but I was small and don't really remember any of the things that she did in her garden. I love your garden and channel. Thank you!
I just binge watched your channel! My fiance just came & saw i was still watching from yesterday.. He came back with seedlings! Im outside now sunbathing with them!🙌🍅🌱
I had 92 tomato plants 2 years ago in my garden. I lost them all to blight. Last year I grew them in my sunporch (inside). Best tomatoes I ever grew. No worries of blight either.
Face it, we all have to eat them at one point. Set them on the counter several days before you use them, not as good as fresh, but a little less store.
I just found your channel and I'm so, so happy about it. Thank you so much. You're amazing - doing all this with a large family. I don't even know you and I'm so proud of you and admire you! Keep it up 🧡

Well, this year I’m breaking all the HOA rules and growing vegetables in the front yard this year, thanks to neighbors who decided to break the rules last year. They tried to keep us from growing herbs too! That did not work either. The front yard is the only place good tomatoes will grow due to the full sun. I look forward to breaking the rules this year! Next spring I’ll be on my mountain land building my first garden there. I think this is a good way to say goodbye to Suburbia. Thanks for the inspiration 4 years later!

I had to chuckle at your "Do you want a Coke?" reference. We moved from Nevada to Alabama for Army flight school and learned real quick that Sprite and Root Beer are flavors of Coke!
I just came across your video & have been skipping ahead a bit & all I find is expert advice all of the time. I live in Australia and have been growing Vegies for the last 40 years. I picked up on the blossom end rot early & then the skin cracking after getting excited trying to pump heaps of water into them to get really big tomatoes after a hot day. Cow manure (dry) or watered down and applied is a great sweetener & makes your tomatoes juicy & tasty. Also I like to use a vertical post & rail method of holding the plants up. Great Video, thanks, Laurie from Down-Under.
Thank you so much. I'm obsessed with growing tomatoes. Nothing makes me so happier than seeing a farmers field filled with tomatoes. I love growing tomatoes, seeing them ripe on the vine either on the ground or staked up is a beautiful piece of artwork to me. Thanks for all the info.

I have zero attention span and I could listen to you all day.
Thanks a bunch, I am off, like everyone else it seems, to grow a garden.
If I could give an award for the most informative tomato growing information it would go to you, hands down. Thanks so much for taking the time and doing the research for us, I am looking forward to the best-tasting tomatoes I have ever grown thanks to you. I am sharing this video on facebook.
Absolutely! Thank you so much - I learned a lot.
Same here! I love you! Short, sweet and to the point.
I agree, so pleasant to listen to, very informative and helpful. You have an amazing garden.
me too!!!!
Burlap Garden I definitely agree that this is the most informative video on TH-cam. Hear ye hear ye....I wish I had an award emoji to send. 📢📣🎯🍅🍅🍅❤❤❤
Maureen,.
Maureen Amos Amen! She is a blessing to all who view her work!
Fan is misandry, eh?
you are a blessing
Alice Rabbit Didn’t your momma teach you that if you have nothing nice to say, then you shouldn’t say anything at all?! Geez
Excellent idea!
Nice tip, thank you
I am positively mesmerized by your amazing gift of delivering information in a memorable fashion that makes all the difference between retaining information or not
Blossom end rot easy fast fix is put lime in the soil.
Thank you for taking the time to leave this detailed affirmation. I took a screen shot to remind myself when I struggle with doubt. Thanks frank!
@Roots and Refuge Farm, Jess no problem I bet it is what 4.9k subscribers on your channel think as well as I.
A national TV career for you is written in the stars.
I love Monty Don's gardening shows. He is so knowledgeable and doesn't mind sharing.
Affirmation and appreciation is sweet, it's just his wording reminds me of the temptation of Jesus after his baptism...
Ha ha I just said the same thing before I saw your post!! Its also her filming tecnique and manner, aside from the information being well presented and scripted the whole "production value" really holds your interest!
I feel like I went through a Masters Degree in botany in 1/2 hour! Thanks for the super informative video.
Agreed!
Summary:
1. Sizes(small to large): currant, cherry, salads, pastes, slicers.
2. Types: determinate, indeterminate. Heirloom (handed down and consistent), hybrid (open pollinated is key!)

You are a natural teacher. Clear voiced, enthusiastic, simplified and organized you are.
In the true Bindi spirit. Thanks again.
Jess, because of you I became more confident as a gardener, I'm going into the 4th year now and watch this video every single year, multiple times! You're the best! Love, from The Netherlands 💚🇳🇱
This is the best tomato video on TH-cam by far. Well done. Well done.
agree
thanks Will, tomato on toasted bread with mayo and a little pepper and salt, Yum!

I like how everything you're doing here is in pursuit of a tomato sandwich.
A worthy pursuit indeed.
Thank for the tips and tricks.

This video never gets old...seeing your videos daily, you tend to forget how the garden/property used to look...amazing how far things have come today..can't wait to see where the next garden takes you...❤❤🙏🙏
Wow, I didn't expect to go from beginner to expert in 28 minutes. Thank you for this!

@@joanofark06 But more importantly, she is extremely intelligent and her video is very informative!
@@pennylittlepud9730 Did I mistakenly leave that VERY true information out?? UGH...again! I can't disagree there!! True dat, lol.
Wow! So thorough and helpful. I learned so much! I learned SO much! One thing I was taught was to bury a 1/2 gallon plastic pot in the grind next to my plants and water into that rather than the soil. Since tomatoes have really deep roots, it helps to get water all the way down through the root system.
That’s a really great tip thank you!
Thank you!!
my grape tomatoes escape and went wild a few years ago. Now I just go out and pick them like wild berries every summer.
Malcolm Small I bought wild Galapagos tomatoes that are grape size. They sprawled everywhere, produced bucketfulls, and this year I am finding them all over the yard. In suspect the chickens helped in that regard.
I think that's pretty cool !
Amazing 😍 ❤️💕 gotta appreciate mama nature. 😊 She does her thing.
my neighbor ended up with some of our tomatoes that had gone through the fence. the next year, he had some just coming up here and there and also had a potted one. the ones that had had come up here and there, he didn't pamper like the one in the pot.
My sister used miracle grow and hers turned out good
Can we use milk for culicum?
I am doing that because I was getting blossom end rot and it seems to be working.
Replying to Hope King re: using milk to replace calcium.

The face you made at "store tomatoes" is the face I make when I break down and buy (and eat) store tomatoes 😁
funny ... ever since I grow and eat my own I cannot tolerate store-bought tomatoes they are so tasteless!
Face it, we all have to eat them at one point. Set them on the counter several days before you use them, not as good as fresh, but a little less store.

I totally agree with you , Shelley . I had a 5 acre parcel of land, organic soil, and I miss it dearly. All of my plants, veggie garden, and fruit grew amazingly well.
THANK YOU for your honesty!! I am a beginner and need to see reality and how to deal with it. I stumble across many TH-cam channels that only want to show "perfection", I don't tend to subscribe to them because I am looking for actual info. SO thanks you for being real!

Oh try PVC pipe when you water. Like glue an end cap on one end unless you use a tee and three peace of pipe. And use a PVC threaded coupler to put your hose on. And drill holes in the pipe. As small as you can this is a cheap drip irrigation system.

Moved to Arkansas from California (born and raised) five years ago. Started gardening last year, really got serious this year. Very much enjoying this series, and glad to hear from someone raising tomatoes in the Natural State. A different set of conditions from whence I came, for sure.
Adding calcium by putting egg shells with water into a blender and blend several minutes. This is a good way to use egg shells!

Wow. What an education I just got! Thank you from the bottom of my plant-killin' heart!
