@@therisiab5841 honestly my take is pretty dark. She says “I’ll blow my brains out to the radio” and then the “ch ch” is the same noise as cocking a gun. When you really look into the lyrics of Perfect Places, it’s coming almost from a place of desperation to find happiness. It’s one thing I love about Melodrama in it’s entirety is that it’s an open letter about love, loss, grief, and acceptance

idk but i looked at the album as if it tells a one whole story. green light was the song for the potential break up, and tracks 2,3,4 about reminiscing the “good times”. 5 is the actual break -up, with lorde blaming herself for everything that happened. 6,7,8 is about her undergoing the phase of moving on.
with supercut, she remembers everything - all the good times (after she “found the way to be without her babe”). the last part of this song is a fade out, and you can hear lorde saying “in my head I do everything right” repeatedly.
i think the reason why she’s saying the lyric over and over is because there is a part of her that is starting to blame herself again. it’s like her way of saying *i did everything right, but why did it (the break up) happen? why did he leave?*
this makes sense cause the next song starts with “I’m a liability”

    • @earlisonline
      @earlisonline 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

and yep, liability (reprise) is the most important part of the album because in this part, she finally learns the idea of self-love and acceptance. you can tell it when she said “but you’re not what you thought you were”

If you pay attention, Sober and Sober II are lirically conneceted. One ends asking "can you feel it? can you feel it?" and the other starts answering "you asked if I was feeling it, I'm psycho high". Sober is the party, it's the high, the king and queen of the weekend taking pills and having thrills, "but what will we do when we're sober?". Sober II is after the party, when the lights are on and everyone's gone home, but who am I? Left here with my feelings, sober. (the melodrama)

My ex would constantly call me "too much", "too emotional", a burden, etc. He made me feel like a liability because I was dealing with a mental illness and was in therapy. He would only come to me when it was convenient for him. And when he got bored or felt like I was "too much", he'd leave. And that cycle would continue. So yeah. That song holds dear to me.

Truth be told, if Lorde had only put out Melodrama and nothing else, her status as legend would be established. It is pretty much impossible to listen to this album without wanting to listen to it over and over again. Even if you take a long break, putting it on again reminds you that your ears and heart are in the presence of creative genius. I feel blessed every time I listen to it. You completely missed the message of the first verse of Liability. Lorde was referring to herself in the first verse. From all the pain of all the external love she experienced, she ultimately went home into the arms of the girl that she loves. She, too, admitted this girl is hard to love, a burden to carry- a liability indeed, but she never gave up on her. Because that girl was her self, and the only love she knew would always welcome her home is her self-love. Such genius songwriting!

The songs w fadeouts are mostly the ones about the relationship the album follows and to me at least represent how she can't get the idea and feelings out of her head, until liability reprise where she interrupts the fadeout abruptly to say "leave" and the song is about moving on from him so it fits. Also, the piano in greenlight and supercut are (i believe) intentionally similar bc they are both about being far enough from a relationship to forget about the bad and only seeing the good and almost wanting in again

  • @earlisonline

lorde has chromesthesia or sound-to-color synesthesia where she sees colors in music. every song represents a particular color in the album cover - blue, orange, yellow, violet, red.
it’s also interesting to find out that the colors in the album cover are those that you see on a brain scan of a depressed patient. and the main themes of this album are sadness and heartbreak.

I think the fade outs are helpful because the song has such heavy mood swings that it smooths the space between the highs and lows.

I just realized how much this album is inspired from fiona apple's the idler wheel... lyrically
Liability is inspired from largo, homemade dynamite sounds inspired from anything we want and the music video for perfect places is alike to every single night from fiona's album
Would love a reaction to that too

Woooow. The ending with the fade out and repetition of the song's message was a great analogy! I have listened to the whole album a thousand of times already! However I only picked up on that once you pointed it out! And it totally makes sense! I'm sure it was deliberate. Wow just wow

I'm so glad you finally got to listen to one of the best albums of the entire decade. I'm glad you enjoyed the album as all of us did, and this album really has phenomenal productions that are absolutely out of this world, and is such a beautiful representation of emotions (reminds me of Bjork's "Vulnicura" album).
Anyway, I'd very much appreciate it if you react to the Albums of The Century:
    1. Bjork: Homogenic and Vespertine
    2. AURORA: Infections of a Different Kind EP and A Different Kind of Human album
    3. Kate Bush: Hounds Of Love

  • @_greenyosef

i just thought of this - green light is the true outro of the album and sober was the beginning. perfect places ending on a piano can lead to green light's intro piano, plus in green light she tries to move on. putting green light as the intro might question the listener "what happened, why are you waiting for the green light / what are you letting go of?" which she then proceeds with sober as either a flashback or the "here's why." but i understood green light being the intro for it sounds like one.

She and Ellie Goulding are the only two female artists who always focused on experimental music. They two are one of the rare gems in this modern music era💎💎. Ellie's Halcyon and Lorde's Melodrama are fabulous and always will be in my heart.
