- After 7 years of hard work, I passed my second board exam, essentially making me a CA (SA). I explain what that is, what it means to me, and share some of the special moments from the day.

To become a Chartered Accountant in South Africa you need to study for at least four years, obtaining a BCom in Finance as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting Sciences. (This used to be an honours degree but due to the lack of a thesis it is now just called a diploma. At some universities you can elect to write a thesis so that you can get an honours degree.)
After completing your studies you will then need to complete three years of articles either in an auditing firm (inside of public practice) or in a company that does not primarily provide accounting services (outside of public practice). During those three years you will be monitored and have to achieve certain criteria while studying for and passing two board exams.
You may then apply to SAICA (The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants) for membership and the real work begins. ;)

In the early hours of Friday the 14th February 2020 - I was so nervous, could not sleep: It was my turn waiting for my APC results. I watched this video and it gave me hope.
Fast Forward to 16:00 pm that day - I became a CA(SA).

I am currently a first year student at the university of Johannesburg and i haven't been doing well. I decided to come and watch this video again. I feel so motivated again. I'm an ex Deloitte alumni, also did my articles at Deloitte umhlanga, but I've since moved to CT after qualifying as a CA. it's been 3 and a half years.. but man you guys took me all the way back! I felt like I was experiencing that day all over again, watching you guys wait in anticipation, and celebrate together afterward! You know instead of me pursuing a Masters degree I decided to embark on this journey.I look back and think I would have completed my masters at this point and then think what value would it have added to me as a person.What I enjoy most about this qualification is that it is challenging and brings out the best in you.I feel after one has concluded their journey of becoming a CA,you can potentially do any certification without much difficulty.That is how I feel anyway.Inspring video!

I've done some AG work, it's tough stuff, but you get to make a difference in our country which is awesome.
For me goal number one is to travel, business wise I'm not sure but I hope to one day run my own business.
Yeah. The reality is that AG is too much of travel. Well you can use the skills you learnt in your Audit Career to turn your love of making movies into your big business.

hey bru, I'm studying Bcom Accounting at the start of next year, I do love and have a passion for accounting but I am conflicted between the high salaries of actuaries. I know this is forward but could you maybe do a video on realistically how much entry level young CAs earn here in SA.

Excellent question Kovi! Nobody can predict the future but the job of a CA is always changing, especially today. The CA(SA) qualification in particular has adapted to creating not just technically good accountants but business people. People that start and run businesses, not necessarily just accountants who prepare financial statements. All of my friends and colleagues who have become CA(SA)s have gone on to do such different lines of work - outside of what you may traditionally think of an accountant doing.
So to answer your question directly - no I don’t think this career path will be eliminated but yes I think it will look very different to what it does today. Just as it looks completely different now then in did 20 years ago. I personally very much look forward to the day we can click a button and have all our reporting completed so we can focus more on running the business and improving controls.

It’s been almost 7 years since I finished articles so I’m very sure the salaries have changed. This question would be better for the Deloitte HR team when you apply.
When I did mine the starting Salary was very low and then went up by large amounts when you passed exams or after six month periods of experience. At the time they were talking about smoothing it out more so you started at a higher salary and it didn’t go up as much so people could better afford to live in those first few months.
Good luck with your application, and if you can, apply for funding support from the firm themselves. They often have some great programs.
