As a “mature” woman over 70 makeup has become essential to feeling better about myself when out in public. As you get older your face seems to fade away! TH-cam has been vital to me in learning about makeup, how to’s, what to buy and what not to buy, brands that I would never have been aware of. Boredom is not an option!

Totally agree with you I am 72 and love make up I will go grocery shopping with a full face of makeup dressed up and in high heels I feel my best and it cheers me up 😄 Why not !! life is too short one way street to not enjoy every step of the journey.

I wish my 76 yr old Mum hadn't lost her enjoyment of a nice face of pretty makeup. She wears nothing now and she wouldn't even take me up on the offer of doing her some fresh makeup for my brother's wedding 6 years ago. She was the one who triggered my love of beauty products as a child and she now doesn't even want to go away with my Dad anywhere (here or abroad) or go out occasionally.. she's lost the joy in her life... 💔

@@kirstenglaethink of it as playing with your makeup. Swatch it, mix it with something else, put it on your face and take it off of you don’t like it, just play. And and if you took it off or don’t like it get rid of it. if you have a young niece or a sister or mom that may love it and it’s in good condition pass it in to them. If you play with the makeup and just reorganize it based on color, texture or type or season it doesn’t feel like organizing. It makes it so much easier to find what you love then. Playing with and Decluttering my makeup is the only decluttering that doesn’t feel like work to me lol. Good luck!

I don’t have makeup burnout. I wear it just about every day. What I’m tired of are the high prices. I refuse to buy anything new until I use up what I have. I get more compliments on my makeup when I’m wearing drugstore brands than high end. We wash this crap off every day, there’s no need to pay a fortune for makeup. Spend your money on quality skincare. I promise a good canvas is what makeup needs. ❤

Makeup seems to be getting ridiculously expensive in the last few years and it all looks so repetitive that I feel I have everything I need at this point 🤷🏻‍♀️. Not many new items excites me anymore and I feel more inspired by using my older makeup.

Loved this! For me it’s less losing my joy for makeup. Those 15 mins I spend in the morning are often some of the only moments I get for myself and I love it. But I definitely feel quite disconnected from beauty TH-cam where everything is about new releases. I’m just not that excited by most new products, and I don’t really want to spend lots of my money on makeup when I could use it creating memories with my kid. I think the frequency of new releases just gives me burnout and I miss the days when one palette got released and people would do tutorials with it for 6 months / a year after. It feels less fun and more like a conveyor belt. But that’s just me!

OMG you're a mind reader! Post pamdemic I still love putting on makeup those 2-3 days in the week when I actually go to the office and I enjoy my extra skincare on HO days. But I'm sooo bored of new releases. They just don't bring anything new except maybe package and I don't want to pay the extra Euro for package any more. It seems ridiculous. Even new formulas... how new can they be? My goal is now to hit pan. And watch you using new makeup 😂

During the pandemic is when I began watching YT regularly because I had time to clean out my collection that no longer worked for me over 40. That's when I found joy in makeup again. We also started buying online and needed help shade matching then.
When I purchase a product that was highly recommended but it doesn't perform, it's disappointing and takes the fun out of it for me. When things are hyped up, never to be seen again. If no one talks about what they *don't* like and every video starts to feels like a sales pitch, I know it's time to take a break.
Shop my stash, tutorials and GRWMs that give me a laugh are my favorite. Watching creators who actually apply makeup (not just talk about it) are what breaks up the monotony for me and keeps me sane. I want to learn or be entertained, not just sold something. Your DO NOT BUY THAT series and videos like this are what makes it fun again. So I truly appreciate the reminder ❣💝

I only got into makeup in March this year (I'm 29 now BTW). While makeup is fun and allows me to experiment, I find out that even drugstore products add up! A few regret purchases later, I plan well before buying. IDK if it's just me who find planning makeup purchases more fun than buying on impulse.
My makeup collection ends up being neutrals 90% of them😂 the limited colors forces me to be creative and maximise them without fear of looking weird.

I want to thank you for your honesty and vulnerability, Charlotte. I really love all of my makeup. I love high-end luxury makeup, like Lisa Eldridge, ND, Guerlain, Chanel and Beckham. This love started as a child, and still, I enjoy doing my makeup every single day. As a former living art Artist, I always had to do my makeup, and it was always my favourite moment as it is for me a creative and méditative moment with myself. I can t be bored of it, as beauty and luxury are part of who I am. But hey, I do love my pyjamas and sweaters as well... ;) I am not waiting for anyone's approval for what I do on my face. It is totally a way of being for me.

100% agree. I started a channel in 2013 and truly feel covid killed interest in beauty purchasing, which affected the community.
I've never really made money from this, but I enjoyed receiving PR products to demo. I struggle with 2 videos a month now and am much less excited and far more picky about new releases. I was a sephora Rouge level every year since 2013. This year, I've barely spent $100 there, so I'll lose my rouge status in January. I still love makeup, but we have a different relationship now. I still love it, and am super selective, but the launches keep coming and I always want more! When I die my son is going to say "what the heck was she doing with all this makeup?!" And the cost! I have easily spent over $1000 in just a few months...and yes, Klarna is involved in this as well. So glad you are here, because you are a lot of the joy I find in makeup!

For me- it was not having a foundation that worked for me… trying crap and expecting good. Soooo went to camera ready cosmetics and was matched and bought samples. Minimizing what I have and buying just what I love- or buying where I could also return. Finding a foundation that worked- made a huge difference because the trying was exhausting and depressing.

I could not identify more with this! I started a beauty channel in 2010 and I was burned out before the pandemic but AFTER.. I don’t even know what I’m doing anymore
I stopped accepting PR a long time ago (I accept it sparingly these days) because just as you said, it became overwhelming and a stack of products I hadn’t reviewed yet was stressful. I used to post a daily blog review and 3-7 videos a week across two channels so it’s no surprise it became unmanageable but I so appreciate someone speaking so candidly about this from the creators perspective
To say how many of us there are, nobody really makes videos FOR us 😂

I didn’t have a problem with overconsumption with makeup my whole life until I discovered beauty community. That’s a me problem though.

Thank you for this insightful video Charlotte. Only a sensitive person can pick up these vibes….I still love watching makeup videos just not as much as before. Given the turmoil that the whole world is in right now I find myself looking for other content. Another reason is that I’m so sick of the insane consumerism that is thrown constantly at us….I am so sick of everyone doing the same stuff , be it a new release , or Amazon etc….I no longer allow myself to be sucked in by the new releases mostly because I have so much of everything to the extent of feeling overwhelmed……You are one of the very few that I enjoy watching ❤

Spending this time with you today was very unexpectedly therapeutic. I thought I was the only one who has felt I needed to hide packages, spent too much money; and feel like no one gets why or what I’m interested in when it comes to make-up, and so on. I enjoy the time I have in the morning with the news, my wonderfully hot coffee that gives me a reason to get up in the morning, and playing with make-up because it’s peaceful to me. One thing that’s made a huge difference in enjoying make-up is having a fully dedicated make-up space with a desk and mirror, shelves, etc. It reminds me of women who like to keep a craft room - I like to keep a make-up room. Anyway, I’m learning to wait before buying and to let the feeling of wanting everything that’s new pass before adding to cart!

Dear Charlotte, your attitude towards make up is very mature, healthy and sensible. I used to do my makeup every morning before work and it sort of started feeling like a chore and stopped really enjoying it. Even worse the days that I had to wake up at 5am, maybe slept four hours in two days and still needed to look fresh and put together. What helped me was becoming more picky with my purchases and, as you also said, whenever possible taking as long as I want to do my full face. This allows me to enjoy it more and to be more creative.

I've loved make-up and skincare all my adult life. Just before lockdown my favourite foundation was discontinued and I turned to TH-cam for reviews to help me find a new one (not that I needed it because we were either stuck in the house or wearing a mask). It was then that I discovered all these wonderful content creators and the list was becoming endless of all the creators I felt I needed to follow, and watch every single video they uploaded and follow them on social media to the point that it was becoming overwhelming and I would get irritable and annoyed if I couldn't keep up with watching everything. That's when I started to lose my joy for makeup and actually watching it had become an obsession. I rediscovered my joy by limiting it to my absolute favourite creators whose opinion I valued and who was the most fun and gave me joy to watch (you and Pampered Wolf).... and that is where I'm at today and also not feeling like I have to try every new product. Thanks to you, Charlotte, I have learned to wait and enjoy what I already own and 'shop' my own stash rather than buying new all the time.

What a great topic!!! Something that has burned me out is trying and failing to make my eye looks match creators’. My eye shape just isn’t the same-I don’t want heavy glam to restructure my deep set, strongly hooded eyes. The repeated frustration following 500 hooded eye tutorials and winged liner for hooded eyes is like death by thousand paper cuts. I went for a long time without watching any makeup videos. Now I’m learning I’m best with one and dones. Liquid shadows, sticks and limited palettes are ok. I wanted to buy the new holiday releases from Dior and I was like-what about those 5 pan shadows from Pat McGrath you’ve never even touched??? I’m also filtering what I think is so beautiful to look at and what looks stunning on others. I can appreciate and enjoy it with them without having to buy it myself then never touch it. I’m still working through this but I’m getting quite far along!! ❤❤

This is THEE video that I so needed to see, as I have been in a slowly evolving makeup rut that reached its peak probably a year or so ago. There's at least several factors behind it for me personally: 1.) I bought FAR too much FAR too rapidly from 2012-2022(even a bit more than I should have this year, as well, if I'm going to be honest), 2.) Allergy tearing up of my eyes that has progressively gotten much worse since moving to this side of town. And, with a pH that will eat right through ANY and all eyeshadow primers! 3.) The move itself had terrible timing. It was the first day of the Covid pandemic lockdown here in the United States, so I was not going out, had to wear a mask when I had to, and then, March 2022, had to undergo major surgery for uterine cancer (in situ inside of a fibroid, thank God), plus the recovery process just left me too tired to care as much about the new-new.
Hopefully, I'll dig myself out of this rut. And soon!

Such a wonderful discussion, personally have not yet reached burnout with makeup as my hobby pastime for self expression and self care but i did have to set a boundary for my ability to properly store and actually use what i acquire while also having enough variety in certain categories that i get enough creative enjoyment out of using them …. I gave myself a set of 2 drawer stacks 3 drawers each stack for makeup and skin care that fit the space i have for them, one drawer set is for things i currently enjoy using regularly the other drawer set is for things i use less regularly at the given time, and i stay within the limits of those drawers, if new products come out i am interested in i go through the products i have to see if i want to declutter anything or wait until a current product is low enough that it will need a back up or replacement before i make a new purchase or if i have room in a certain drawer i may make a new purchase with no declutter first, also finding the types of formulas and color stories that really suit me and my styles best and give me the effect i want and not trying to be a type of creative that i just don’t do helped alot with my creative enjoyment product use and my product use

Charlotte, I have just discovered you about a week or so ago, and you are exactly the kind of content creator I feel Ive been needing lately 😌
This chat about "taking a break" from something you love is such an important thing to hear--and understand. I think its easy to feel guilt, or shame or disappointment if we DO walk away for awhile, but this is the natural cycle of life, no? Everything ebbs and flows and we cant go full throttle without feeling the eventual burnout. Ive been salsa dancing for 21 years, and practicin -more recently teaching)-yoga for about that long. I cant imagine my life without either one of these, but Ive walked away from both for periods of time when it wasnt serving me (especially during hot yoga teacher training where Id occasionally still rock a waterproof winged liner;)
When Ive come back, its always felt like a newly appreciated experience. Thanks for sharing with us your wisdom❤

I enjoy hearing you speak, everything you say makes alot of sense. We are in this world purchasing products just because we listen and watch content creators and as for myself I buy and buy makeup just because. Also, I believe we buy just to look how you all look beautiful and that never happens to me. Thank you so much for your intelligent insight. It’s always mesmerizing watching and hearing you Charlotte ♥️

Burnout wasn't the direct cause of my stopping not only makeup but also proper skin care. For the past 2+ years I've been working on recovering and getting back to work from serious illness/surgery. I had bronchitis, then abdominal emergency surgery, the COVID over about a 5 month period. With all that i lost my joy for a lot of things. I'm finally getting back to proper skin care and my creative outlet of makeup. It makes me feel so much better about myself. I do it for me and am finding my joys again.

What a timely video, Charlotte! Not so much as it relates to make up as I still really delve into that as self-care, but I loved hearing the story of you taking a break from swimming and feeling “OK “with that. I started at a very very early age as a professional dancer up until my 30s and then went to do aerial work and now I am a personal trainer and on the cusp of turning 60. I still train clients from Powerlifters to rehab. And although I love training people, I am finding it incredibly difficult to drag myself into the gym at the end of the day and do my own training. This brings incredible guilt as I always feel that I should be at the top of my game if I am to train others. It’s been a source of frustration and anxiety. And I’ve been greatly slacking in my own training and making excuses… But after hearing your story, I think I’m going to give myself permission to take a month or two off as I’ve only done that on maternity leave or during a serious illness. I think I can do this and feel much better about myself and return refreshed because I really did have a passion for it at one point I know this has nothing to do with make up except for the fact that it’s been in my escape and self care during this difficult time but have definitely definitely made a difference in my view of the subject. Thank you!

I’m not really bored of makeup, rather, I just don’t have the mental energy to actually get up and apply my makeup.
Recently, I’ve started using some super easy makeup from Surratt. But I almost can’t deal with having choices anymore. I don’t do my eyeshadow anymore and that used to be my favorite thing. The only choices I can manage are blush color and lip product.

Hi Charlotte great video. I am just getting back into make up after being more into skin care over lockdown. I definitely find going back to my old collection and playing around gives me inspiration and getting rid of mistake buys that only make me regretful. I also think that looking for inspiration on social media is a mixed blessing. Sometimes I learn things but most times my makeup does not turn out like theirs due to use of lights/filters.

It's funny, I've always loved make up from being a teenager. Always wore make up when I was working and had my horses (never bothered on a weekend or when I was competing endurance with my horses). I kind of lost interest in make up when I got divorced about 8 years ago. Then when I sadly lost my last horse 3 years ago and then retired a year later, I had more time on my hands and have rediscovered how much joy it gives me to put on a face of make up. It's just for me as I live alone but it makes me feel better. I find it therapeutic and I still watch YT videos as I have done for many years. I think Pixiwoo were the first ones I subscribed to and the rest is history as they say. I do miss Mel Thompson and revisit her channel every now and again. It's a community I enjoy and continue to do so

I'm late twenties and so I've been enjoying the beauty community both on TH-cam and other platforms since I was a teen. Unofrtunately due to the consumer culture that thrives among us today, it made it hard for me to find people I thought were authentic or whose opinion I was going to trust. I don't care for people who get ridiculous levels of PR and there are certain things I like to see on a channel. One of the reasons I found your channel fun (only this year, did I come across you) was that I can see you enjoy the makeup and the launches authentically, you look forward to having that new launch and giving a real review. I also like that you are ok with splurging but will happily say when people could give things a miss.
I still enjoy makeup but I've definitely turns my focus to quality which means I try more high-end brands, with disappointments when I shell out a lot of money and something doesn't perform well. I do find it sad that I have about only five TH-camrs, I'd watch now when it comes to beauty.

For me, makeup is my self care. I get up early, make coffee, and take my time putting it on. I have reached a point where I don’t need anything new, but if I really want something, I get rid of something else. I’ve collected makeup since the mid ‘70s, when I was in middle school. But during the pandemic, when I was stuck at home, I started watching reviews and tutorials. It relieved some of the boredom, and I learned a LOT! Thanks for your advice, Charlotte. It can be applied to many things, not just makeup. ❤

LOVED this video!!! I've lost my makeup mojo for months and months and its giving me anxiety and feelings of frustration because I still love makeup and want to collect it but the thought of sitting down and doing a look leaves me feeling exhausted. And now that I'm thinking about it, part of my anxiety etc is from looking at all the makeup pilling up that I'm still purchasing and not using because if I do happen to think hmm I kinda fancy putting a lil makeup on today, I then look at all the palettes I haven't used yet and think uhh, its too much for me to think about and I leave it again. I suffer with depression so I know that is partly to play but everything you said I was nodding my head to. So glad you made this vid 😘

As someone who works in a “creative” job (graphic designer), this is something me and my colleagues deal with as well. People assume that creatives always have passion and excitement driving their work, but realistically it’s not always there. It’s taken me years to learn that it’s okay to not always feel passion and joy about my work. It’s okay for that excitement to come and go.

This is a fantastic video, Charlotte, and very thought-provoking. For me, it was definitely Covid. Not going to the office, not going on nights out = no need for makeup. Somehow I haven’t quite managed to recapture my joy, not just for makeup but also for the events I associate with wearing it. On the positive side, I still love the idea of makeup- I just can’t be bothered putting it on my face. In the meantime, I have become more focused on skincare, which is probably no bad thing… xx

my negative points in my head
    1. clutter everywhere I am ashamed of when people visit me (see my bathroom)
    2. the fast moving world of makeup, i just bought a wonderful limited edition, but noone talks about it anymore, because next week there are other LEs
    3. Guilt for buying no long time valuable items
    4. I often think, at my age it doesn’t matter anymore, I am 55 and men don’t look at me like they did when I was young. Should I just stop the hustle to look pretty?
    5. I cant afford all I want (Tilbury, Hourglass etc.). FOMO.
    6. Sometimes I think, everything is repetitive.

I've just come back from a break! It must have been around 6 months that I didn't watch any make-up or skincare TH-cam videos! It's very nice to know that make-up burnout is somewhat normal and not a super weird thing to have.
I guess my reasons are financial side of things and also time. There're other things for me to prioritise above make-up so I really can't justify spending money on make up like I used to. Also I have to walk my dog, see my friends, travel to new places and so on. So it's hard to find time to sit down and enjoy putting on make up. But I'll need to make time I guess :)

Oh my god exactly what you said - I often feel like I’m the only one who can’t afford to spend money on makeup and the only one who wants less of what’s released. I would much prefer to buy a new indie palette release every two months like everyone else and have a collection, because it seems like everyone else does that and they can talk about what all the brands are and what the quality is like. Instead I constantly go back and forth on what I want to buy and it’s almost painstaking.

I cannot paint or draw, but I can make up my face, and I think that's part of what I love about applying makeup. A big struggle I have been thinking about lately is how much more I feel pressured to achieve "perfection" than ever before.
    The perfect product.
    The perfect beauty tool.
    The perfect application skill.
Pressures about perfection, instead of just enjoying makeup, have caused my burnout.

For me it was the clutter and the guilt for not using everything I own, so I decluttered a lot and went into a low buy this year. It helped for a while
Unfortunately, in light of all that's happening here in Israel, I find myself ordering more and more stuff to distract myself and make myself feel better. Adore your videos. I still love makeup as much as I ever did, and I don’t even mind paying for quality products. Unfortunately, it feels like the beauty community that I once relied on for honest opinions on what to buy(minus your channel of course cause I love the “You don’t need that series”), has turned in to nothing but sponsored ads to the point that I no longer trust most of the content creators. I understand the need to make a living, but too many creators have sold out to make a quick buck so that it is hard to really enjoy watching without feeling lied to anymore:( I wish we could just go back to the days when everyone was playing with makeup for fun and actually recommending items that were worth the money. Makeup is as old as time, so I really don’t think people are burnt out on makeup, we are just burnt out on being lied to 😢

Then i hit my 50's and started watching your channel. I discovered im a lipstick girl, reds, oranges, pinks there is no stopping me and i discovered that Lisa Eldridge is lipstick God. I have tried to fall in love with makeup. It has taken decades to figure out what I like, what works, how to apply and when. Watching videos ad nauseam and buying products I ended up hating. 🤦‍♀ I’m finally to a point where I realize I am minimal, natural with a touch of color or shine. I find I play more with my makeup now, but still don’t wear makeup every day. If I was realistic with myself I could probably reduce my makeup down even more to just products that would fit into a makeup pouch. I’m shooting for that goal. What I love and minimal amount of it.

That's so funny that your first born brought the love of makeup to you because thats what happened for me when I had my son, who is my second born. It was the colourpop Disney Princess palette that made me excited for makeup. I always loved makeup, but it sparked something in me like never before! That was 5 years ago and I was an avid Carlie Bybel and Jackie Aina watcher trying to understand and learn the craft of makeup.
I made it a point to keep a budget with my makeup purchases for my channel in addition to wearing ALL the makeup I buy at work. I won't buy what I won't wear! Oh and the makeup shame is REAL! My coworkers always give me a hard time when they see me with my luxury lipsticks, but honestly I don't care anymore. We all have things we value and are willing to spend good money on, and makeup is mine. I really loved this video Charlotte☺ It was a much needed subject to discuss.
