- Srirangapatna Fort Mandya Tourism Srirangapatna Tourism Mysore Tourism Karnataka Tourism. Srirangapatna Fort is a historical fort located in Srirangapatna, the historical capital city in the South Indian state of Karnataka. Built by the Timmanna Nayaka in 1454, the fort came to prominence during the rule of Tipu Sultan. The fort was fully fortified and the architecture was modified with the help of French architects to meet the growing needs of saving against invaders. The river Kaveri surrounds the fort in one of the sides. The fort is protected in the West and Northern directions by river Cauvery. The fort had Lal Mahal and Tipu's palace, which were demolished during the British capture of 1799. There are seven outlets and two dungeons. History of Srirangapatna fort dates back to 15th century CE. The original mud fort in this location was built in 1454 AD by a local chieftain of the region Timmanna Hebbar, under the patronage of the Vijayanagara empire.The fort is believed to have been built by Timmanna Nayaka, a ruler of Vijayanagar Empire in 1454 CE. The fort was in the hands of the Empire till 1495 when the Wodeyars overpowered the Vijayanagar rulers. The fort was subsequently changing hands between Nawab of Arcot, Peshwas and the Marathas.The Wodeyars moved their capital from Mysore to Srirangapatna and established the fort as the seat of the empire. The region and the fort made progressive changes during the rule of Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar during the years 1673 to 1704, but the three subsequent rulers had no impact. During the rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar (1734-66), the kingdom became a strong military force and came under the control of the military general Hyder Ali.Hyder Ali, had to cede the fort to the invading Marathas for 32 lakh rupees during 1757, but he came back strongly to gain it back. During 1782, Tipu Sultan, the son of Hyder Ali took the reign of the fort and built fortifications. Tipu was invaded many times by the British forces. Tipu had agreements with the French and even had letters sent to Napoleon. After several unsuccessful attempts, British forces under the command of Colonel Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, made an attack on 4 May 1799 under the covers. The forces had 2,494 British soldiers and 1,882 Indian troops. The soldiers were asked to wait in trenches and started the advancement across the river during the mid day when the watchmen of the fort used to rest. The account of the offensive is found in the accounts of Colonel Beatson.Tipu was killed in the battle and the English had a treaty with the Wodeyar queen. Lord Mornington commanded the forces and the battle is considered one of the turning point in the colonization strategy of the East Indian Company.
This Fort has four main entrances and has a double wall defense system, which is what makes it one of the toughest forts. Most of the fort was demolished by British during Fourth Mysore War in 1799.
Often quoted as the second most formidable forts in India, the Srirangapatna fort is located in Sriringapatna island. The torrential Kaveri ( Cauvery) made the Srirangapatna into a difficult to cross island.That offered the natural defense to the fortification. Tippu Sultan rebuilt, the fort with many ingenuous military architectural techniques of those days.
There are two dungeons in the lower chambers of the fort that were used to imprison captured British officers. Tipu's residence was also housed within the Fort.
This double enclosure fort is built with massive granite blocks, that is abundant in this region. The inside of the fort rampant are made of mud and rubble masonry.

This only guide is enough to showcase, how Tippu struggled to save our land n more over the sad truth is he was betrayed by our own people... If Tippu Sultan and his father Hyder wasn't there i belive Mysuru kingdom would've been destroyed by British too way back. Some idiots are striving so hard to change the history of Tippu. Tippu Sultan was by no means a good, just or tolerant King. He was the biggest villain. B. L. Rice notes in “History of Mysore” that the ONLY reason Tippu did not brutally ravage the Shree Ranganathaswamy Temple and the Chamundi Temple is because the Brahmin astrologers who Tippu consulted happened also to be the priests in those temples. This didn’t stop him from confiscating the temples’ wealth, though. The priests and devotees did not care about the temple treasure, they only wanted Nitya Pooja to continue and were willing to sacrifice the treasure for it.
Because Tippu had no such requirement for any other Hindus or temples, let alone priests, he sacked, looted and destroyed temples in Mammiyoor, Thali, Thiruvannur, Varackal, Puttur, Govindapuram, Thalikkunnu, Parmpathalli, Keraladheeswaram, Thiruprangatu, Thrikkandiyoor and EVERYWHERE else he set foot. This is corroborated by so many historians, archaeologists and academics. Among them the most often cited are PCN Raja (in “Religious Intolerance of Tippu Sultan”), G Pillai (in “History of Literature”) and BL Rice (quoted before).
Hyder wasn’t too different either. Any example of “lenience” on his part was motivated solely by self interest.
Jumma Masjid in Sriranga Patanam, Mysore was actually a Hanuman temple.
Tippu Sultan had built the existing Jumma Masjid over the temple. Earlier to this one of the Fakhir had predicted that the popularity will become permanent if he can build a Masjid over a Hindu Temple. And one of the graves found here is of the same Fakhir

Very good Coverage...I am an Indian student studying in Czech Republic. I feel happy and proud that Srirangapatna was built in the same time period as some of cities here. As a citizen of Mysore frequently swimming and roaming all these places,
I also feel sad about how monuments are respected here in Europe and quite badly neglected in Srirangapatna (like the moats used now for sewage water). I request all of Srirangapatna authorities to save our proud history.

Dear Sudheesh,, I have fallen in love with your great collections and become a fan of your page. I was so impressed after seeing your posting of Chitra Durga Fort and immediately searched for other postings. I was totally taken aback by the advance engineering brains of our past generations who have excelled in the water technology of lifting the water from the source of river and making it flow over the river which is simply amazing. This speaks volumes about the advanced brains of rulers. I think the present engineering minds and brains should take the cue from Srirangapattana for understanding the technology and implementing same in other areas to solve the water problem which is a main source of livelihood. Great explanation from the Guide who is passionate about his birth place and has taken a lot of pains to know the finer details. Hats off to you and the entire team again for such wonderful posting. Please continue to this good work a wish to see more such glories of our past generations. Our past Kings and Rulers were benevolent and worked for the betterment of people at large which is sadly missing in todays world. We must know the greatness of our forefathers and you are doing a yeomen service in this direction.
