    That little MEEP at the end from the pup was adorable! Thank you to the Oregon Zoo and The Nature Conservatory for finding ways to bring otters back to the coast.
    With Joey's fame, sea otters have become a world interest! Awareness to sea otter conservation, as well as conserving their natural habitat is incredibly important!

    So if the urchins rely on the kelp for food, and the otters rely on the urchins for food, and the kelp rely on the otters to stay healthy, does that mean they all rely on each otter? Okay I'll see myself out now

    I like that you drew me in with a story of a cute and orphaned otter and then did a switcheroo and held me there to see if he would come back (while I was learning!)

    I used to be a diver and lived in Newport, Oregon for many many years. On the Oregon Coast,I never saw an otter in the water there. Newport has a nice kelp garden. With the aquarium there, erected there in the very early 90's, it would be a perfect spot to release otters. The mapping project is a worthwhile cause. Thank you. 🌼✌️

    The kelp mapping is an impressive endeavour. I'm so glad we have the technology to study habitats or potential habitats on a large scale. As the keeper mentioned, the real hurdles are then working with fishing industry, government and native peoples to make this project a reality. Hmmm, I was also thinking... I eat kelp (Kombu). I never researched the sustainability of it. I’d give it up in a heartbeat for these puppers! 💚 [Edit: seaweed and kelp are excellent food choices!]

    • @Truffle85
      @Truffle85 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I support learning about food sourcing, but I have to point out that most edible seaweed and kombu is produced and harvested in Japan, so I don't think you need to worry too much!

    Excellent video on the importance of these keystone animals! :) Kelp forests are essential habitats for a multitude of marine habitats organisms, providing food, shelter and more for many species, including sea otters. I hope to one day witness sea otters get re-established on Oregon Coast, but until then people need to do their parts to help the mustelids and other species. Keep up your amazing work, Oregon Zoo! :)

      Get religious leaders to tell people it’s okay to use birth control. Get governments to stop being corrupt an give people something to live for other than reproducing/making new workers, to produce wealth for the wealthy. These things will never happen in our lifetime. When I was a kid, the world population was just over 3.5 billion. Now we’re fast reaching 8 billion! This is UNSUSTAINABLE. The more the population grows, the more strife, conflict, poverty, pollution, food shortages, environmental destruction and diseases there will be. Makes me almost glad I have not much longer to go on this ride.

      We decimated the sea otter population because of rapacity and selfishness. They are Keystone species and essential to our ecosystems. There are ways to give them reparations that suit their needs and they are far more deserving of them than any humans. For example sea otters eat 25-40% of their body weight and enjoy all sorts of shellfish. Give them abalone, snails, perhaps let them try stone crab, Maine lobster, Dover sole, etc, etc. They should be allowed $500 a day in seafood at minimum.

    Who knew? I sure didn't, please SAVE the sea otters! Hope they can figure out how to re-populate them for the Oregon coast. Though killing them for their fur has stopped, human pollution in the oceans kill them, namely plastics there are billions of tiny plastic particles in the oceans broken down from large plastics like bottles, etc., that end up in the stomachs of all ocean animals, boats run them over, caught in fisherman's nets, killed by sharks for food, sweet sea otters have it rough. Humans need to do their part and stop polluting the oceans and beaches with trash that ends up in the oceans when the tides comes in, come on people who frequent beaches and oceans, clean up after yourselves!
