  • WE"RE REACTING TO ANDOR FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME!
    In an era filled with danger, deception, and intrigue, Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a Rebel hero.
    About Star Wars Andor:
    Andor, also known as Star Wars: Andor, is an American science fiction television series created by Tony Gilroy for the streaming service Disney+.
    Beginning five years before the events of Rogue One (2016) and A New Hope (1977), the series follows an ensemble cast of characters during the time that a Rebel Alliance is forming in opposition to the Galactic Empire. One of these characters is Cassian Andor, a thief who becomes a revolutionary and eventually joins the Rebellion.
    Andor was a vital part of Rogue One, the team that ultimately succeeded in obtaining the Death Star plans from the Imperial facility and uploading them to the Rebel Alliance. He and every member of Rogue One gave their lives to save billions of others.

      @@shiykyk7538 neither was the original Star Wars - just a dressed up version of Wizard of Oz, mixed with the silent classic Wings (whose cockpits - flown for real - look exactly like a TIE Fighter cockpit, blatant copying!)
      Even John Williams' music was borrowed very much from Gustav Holst's Planets Suite ... almost to the exact note when it came to the large scale Death Star scenes (such as "Chewie - lock in the auxilary power!" and the chords leading to its destruction)
      STar waRS has always been about taking classic stories and translating them into a science fiction setting
      In this case - Andor gives us the "spy thriller" (never done properly before in Star Wars - I call that "original"!), but also adds on a terrific version of "the heist", and an amazing version of "the prison escape" and one other superb trope (no spoilers .. until next episode)
      Most stories are bound to be retreads of something that went before - it's how you present them that makes the difference, and Andor does each of its "unoriginal" tropes beautifully! :)

    And how incredible was Diego Luna’s acting in that final scene? I have never seen a better portrayal of the realism of a moment like that- the total numbing shock of receiving incomprehensible bad news. Then he tries to be so stoical in front of Melshi… putting on that slightly aggressive resting face of his. But for a few seconds where they hug, and Melshi can’t see his face, you can see his eyes go wide with grief. And his voice cracks too when he says “Everything Ok”. I’ve watched this scene quite a few times and I bawl every single time. Nicholas Britell’s amazing music helps with that too.

    An important point about the scene where Luthen escapes from the Imperial ship is that his method of breaking free of the tractor beam is actually a metaphor for how he sees the Rebellion. He pushes harder and harder against it, forcing the Imperials to increase its strength so that when Luthen finally releases the countermeasures, they will have a more devastating effect.

    If you didn't know, the choice around spellhause really happened. The popular legend is that during the second world war, Winston Churchill received a notice from his code breakers that a massive air raid was being planned by the Germans to attack the city of Coventry. However, Churchill feared if they evacuated the settlement, the Germans would realize that the British had cracked Enigma (the German code) and would default to a new one. With the war so uncertain, the impossible choice was made to allow the raid to hit unchallenged so that they could continue to spy on the enemies movements. 600 people died.
    That, however, is mostly legend, as most modern scholars accept that though the air raid did take place, that the codebreakers had simply failed to figure out where the attack was going to land. The truth is that the choice was still made, but it was in regards to a set of Royal navy ships, a hard military target, not a town full of women and children, that Churchill threw onto the pyre to hide that the Enigma was compromised. Still a horrifying thing to contemplate though

    I read somewhere calling the writing in Andor it's own special effect. It doesn't rely on multimillion dollars for CGI to convey meaning. It packs it all in the words the characters say. And no better example than the finale.

    So incredibly tragic that Cassian missed Maarva by… a day? I think she probably died at the same time as Cassian was orchestrating the breakout. The tragic moments in this series are so ironic. The connection to Rogue One is exceptionally poignant. Cassian is just a little bit too late to tell his mother that she would be proud of him. But he realises later that she would be. So before he dies on Scarif he tells Jyn Erso : “Your father would be proud of you”. The visual call-forward to Rogue One, with the light of a “sun” over a beach, makes the ending of this episode feel like some kind of beautiful but sad poem - the series is doing a masterful job of making connections to the final stages of Cassian‘s story.

      Also the repeated instance of a character in his vicinity saying to climb shortly before dying (Nemik telling him to climb in the escape craft in episode 6, Kino Loy telling all the prisoners to climb during the prison escape in episode 10, and K-2SO while holding off the stormtroopers in Rogue One).

    Luthen and Saw's dilemma is probably based on the possibly appcryphal story about the bombing of Coventry in WW2.
    The UK had cracked the German Enigma code, and learned about a forthcoming bombing raid on the city of Coventry, and chose to let it go ahead, rather than reveal they'd cracked the code and intercepted the information.

    50 vs 30 men aside, Luthen repeatedly adding, "plus Kreegyr", is very powerful. It shows how he does truly value human life. 'No, its not just 30 men, its 30 plus Kreegyr'. It bothers him enough to correct Saw many times. I personally think increasing the men to 50 was strategic; Luthen had a reason to inflate the number for Lonni. I think his interaction with Saw, on the other hand, is one of the few times you see Luthen's mask come off. You finally see how the weight of the decision bewilders him.

    • @pseudonymousbeing987
      @pseudonymousbeing987 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      New idea: Luthen figured out a way to save 20 men between these scenes. He somehow maneavoured some group out of the deal thus saving some vital lives.
      But then it also does make sense he inflated it to Lonni, to make Lonni think the sacrifice made on his behalf was even bigger and thus him walking away costs even more pointless deaths.

    • @sealofapproval637
      @sealofapproval637 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I think that 50 is likely the more accurate figure, Lonni had access to the ISB findings from the rebel pilot they interogated. Saws' knowledge of Krega's cell is likely just out of date but Luthen has no reason to correct him when he says "30" it would just make the prospect of not warning Krega that much harder to sell.

      Luthen also says the sky crystal he gives to Andor is worth 50k while Skeen says it’s 30k. When Skeen says it he’s accusing Andor, so he’d have reason to over estimate. It seems like Luthen has a tendency to inflate values by 2/3rds.

    thank you again for the great reaction, Kim! also thank you for making me realize what Luthen was doing with the changing, shifting numbers of Kreegyr's crew. it was probably 50 men (as stated by Lonni at the ISB), but either he told Saw 30 on purpose, or Saw thought that was how many men Kreegyr had by mistake and Luthen didn't correct him-- 30 men is a lot different than 50 and Saw might not have been so on board with standing by and letting 50 menwalk into a trap. that is wy Luthen keeps repeating 'plus Kreegyr' whenever Saw brings it up. fascinating decision on his part because a) luthen absolutely does not have to tell Saw that ISB knows about Spellhaus. that was a risky move on his part. and b) he intentionally lies in order to ensure that Saw would not go.

    As a piece of classic Star Wars - the Arrestor Cruiser scene is up there with the best scenes in Empire Strikes Back.
    Credit to the actor who plays the commander - he was suitably pompous and shitty!
    ... and lucky - such failure would have meant being force-choked by Darth Vader just a few years later

    Something to consider about Mon's marriage. Her (Mon's) family is clearly the senior to her husband's, as her husband had an aspiring military career that he was forced to shelve so that Mon could pursue her political ambitions. The trope of a man packing his wife and family up to a far flung government post for ambition and glory is commonly told and often with a great deal of sympathy to a spouse suffering along side so the husband can pursue that ambition, and it's the same here just with the genders reversed. The husband was taken away from his career, his friends, his family to serve Mon's ambition, and Mon's political career is very much a thorn in the side of many other senators no doubt making social life difficult at times. His devil may care attitude and vices to me are very understandable, and it's not like he's a horrible person, his daughter clearly loves him. He's flawed like everyone else. I feel that because of how amazing Mon's character is and that the husband character is a male, causes most people to overlook that and just assume he's an unmitigated jerk, when there are absolutely mitigating circumstances for his petulant attitude in my opinion. I'm not saying he's a morally wonderful person, just that he doesn't deserve the venom I see a lot of reactors and commentators heap on him. My 2c.

    If you loose 50,000 troops 4 50 men…plus Krieger… you ain’t a good general. Unfortunately in #war ….it sadly becomes a numbers game! #Spok ….sacrifice the 1…2 save the many 😢
