Really enjoyed this podcast! Loved listening to his story! Jon M. Chu has so much substance! Such a humble person. My favorite part of the interview was when his parents told him, "You better make right decisions. Don't make desperate decisions." Because he still has a home and food on the table. That says so much about his background, how he was raised, what his parents instilled in him as a person, and to value family. That they are there for him no matter what. And yes, as Justin said, "They literally took away the scarcity mentality so you can make decisions from a place of abundance." That was amazing! That Jon M. Chu's parents empowered him in this way! That was so powerful! EDIT: Appreciate Liz's comment at the recap. How she did not want to ask certain questions to Jon about being an Asian-American because that would pigeonhole him. Because he is so much more than just that.
What an awesome man Jon is. So wise and humble. I loved the impactful but subtle influence his mother had on him, she had some great advice!! Love what he told her about not making desperate decisions. He really could embody being able to rest into their support, knowing he always had food and a place to sleep. I bet he creates that same environment, like his childhood home, on his sets.

I have to be honest, whenever I see that there is a new episode on your TH-cam channel, I hesitate to watch it. Mostly because I feel like I need to be in a space that I am able to soak in all of the wisdom which your guests, as well as yourselves, provide. As a Pacific Island woman who is also half caucasian, I resonate with so much of what you talk about on this podcast. When Jon responded to the question about his funeral and what he would hope that his children would say about him, I started bawling, because I would hope my children say the same thing about me. Thank you for that moment, I needed it.

Watching your amazing podcast has become one of my very special “rendez-vous” in my week. It feels like a spiritual jacuzzi and spa, relaxing and vitalising at the same time, and also like a therapy session, inviting me to connect even more authentically and fully with myself and others. I also feel each time as if I had spend a wonderful uplifting time with trusted friends, who both encourage and challenge me in my growth. I loved Jon M Chu’s genuine humility and confidence/assertiveness at the same time, a rare combination! So happy that Justin’s creative energy and juices have been reactivated by his interaction with Jon Chu, and am sure that his imposter’s syndrome has reduced since. I could be wrong but I feel as though Jaime got shut down a bit towards the end when he said that he’s thinking of the word asset differently and I think I get what he was saying which is that if I’m right he wasn’t trying to dis what Liz said but I think he was just trying to think about the ways in which other people could misuse that term or misinterpret it’s meaning bc when I hear the word asset I think of an object so maybe that’s when he was referring to or going to say? But if not that’s why I thought for sure lol and even still I did love the idea of “I am an asset to be acquired” I think that’s beautiful. Anther great episode as always, I didn’t realize movie makers faced all this backlash towards films that seemed to be doing well, like I didn’t hear any negativity around Justin’s movie or around in the heights although I myself did feel a little under represented it was hard to complain bc it is really a lovely representation of people like myself ❤️

@@WeAreManEnough Thanks so much. Sushmita is an icon not just in India, but also in Philipinnes, where she won Miss Universe in 1994. As you know, India is a patriarchal society. She went against the societal norms to adopt two girls as a single mother. She commands respect from men, as they are intimidated by her confidence and aura. Once she starts speaking, you won´t stop listening to her.
The way Jamie talked about being in a unique position having a white mom is why I don't understand why he calls himself black instead of biracial. My experience as a black person who has two black parents is different from his as a biracial person with only one, so it sometimes feels like I'm being erased.

This is a beautiful episode full of so many important things. There is one bit of feedback I have to give though. I'm disabled. I teach disability and media. I often have to call in creatives for whom something was missed. In my experience 5 feet apart was damaging. It perpetuates some harmful tropes some of which aren't mentioned here. And this was not an attack. Jon apologized publically for the things he got wrong before celebrating what he did well. That isn't what happened here.
I love this episode for many reasons, first, one of my favorite directors is being interviewed, second, we are talking about representation. I'd love to see more people like Jon here, for example, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Edgar Ramirez. In general, I'd love to see other cultures. Thank you!
