    I'm loving this new branding. You're absolutely right to finally present yourself as "scrabble champion" - I feel a hint of inspiration from WIRED's videos here, great thing to apply to your channel. Also, knowing Scrabble from vids like yours only, this is finally one I can completely understand :D

    Depending on when this episode of NCIS aired originally, QI might not have been in the Scrabble Dictionary. Air date is in 2007; so it's a new word but a legal one.

    there's another dilbert scrabble scene where he challenges a sentient ai to a man vs machine olympics. after easily winning badminton the machine looks to recoup the loss in scrabble, where he plays a nonsense 7-consonents word, and upon being challenged, adds it to the current edition dictionary.

    That third game might not have had any bingos played! HER+RING, EXIT+ING, AUTHOR+ED. That's the only way that such a low score makes any sense. It's also what someone learning English vocab might do, practicing suffixes.

  • @-Mopo-
    @-Mopo- ปีที่แล้ว +61

    Pedantry alert: *hektare* is not a Greek unit of measure. *Hekta* is the metric prefix for 100 from the Greek for 100, and *are* is equal to a square meter from the Latin for *area*.

    Interesting. Now that you mention it, Scrabble at top level plays more LIKE A CARD GAME than a grammar puzzle one once you know almost all the words.
    It uses tiles instead of cards but having the same kind of playpattern than said cards would have, like predicting plays, doing setups, planning for the long term. It doesn't need to play with creatures and spells to be a card game.

    Will, your channel is great. Thank you for your excellent content. Suggestions for some 2024 videos, just out of intrigue:
    * Highest ratings gain ever, in a shortened period of time? Conversely, exact opposite with most points lost?
    * Longest documented time penalty in recorded tournament play.
    * Any 15 letter plays. MICROEARTHQUAKE by Nathan Benedict stands out. It was on ISC.
    * Most intriguing “steals” in Clabbers. I saw SPANKING get stolen into KNEECAPPINGS, believe it was King Orry.
    * Any noteworthy 500+ point losses.
    * Nicest non-bingo 3x3s.
    * Fastest recorded speed Scrabble victory. This one should be fun. I used to watch Conrad and Evans finish games in < 2 minutes. Amazing.
    Anyhow, just random drunken requests! (: Cheers, Will. 🎉

    I actually played “quixotic” the other day. 100 points. I had “quoxdwm” and decided to take a gamble because I saw an open “t” on “flint” and exhanged “dwm”. I drew “i”, “c”, “blank.” I would have had it on a double-double word score for 150, but they blocked it with “likely” and “flinty” so then I just made the blank a “t” and played through the “i” of likely.

    I think that changing tiles when you have a bad rack depends on what level player you are. For a high level player, it is obvious to change, because you will have trouble making long words with the letters you have left if you don't change, but a low level player will have trouble making long words with any rack. You may redraw 7 letters for a bingo instead of playing only four tiles, but a player like me would never see that bingo, so I would most likely play a 3-4 letter word from the 7 bingo tiles anyway. If I then hadn't changed on the previous turn, I would at least have added another 3-4 letter word to my score. It doesn't matter much that you have super bingo tiles on your rack if you are not a player who are able to find those bingos.

    I hated the Dilbert scene -- do your homework, writers! But there was a potential problem with the NCIS episode as well, other than the score (which, as you point out, was almost definitely too low): the words played suggest that the players are fairly decent for amateurs (despite their misuse of the blanks), yet they leave the triple-triple spot for a QI play? Even TI/TI would have scored twice as much as that TEA play... unless the play was TEA/ASTERN, in which case someone scored 3 points for the S in STERN (rather than saving it while playing TERN) and then TEA scored 9. It's difficult to figure out how the game ended, but clearly that QI spot was open for many turns.

    Chess scenes are similarly bad but have the added burden of always having to convey something heavy. Either they are in the scene to indicate that people are being super smart, or that some supervillain is merciless; or the whole thing is some overburdened analogy -- chess is just like war, chess is just like race relations, chess is like the competition between the sexes, etc. No one ever just plays chess. And when they do play, the pieces are in the wrong places, are moved wrong, or of course, there's the "I'll sit and think for an hour and then find check mate." Notable exceptions: the magical chess in Harry Potter first movie is a recreated well known puzzle and the Queen's Gambit series was all correctly done.
    Is Scrabble similarly used to indicate something? Like "I'm so smart," I suppose.

    • @wanderer15
      @wanderer15  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, definitely agree that chess as metaphor seems to do a lot of work without any concern for the actual details of the game. It's funny to imagine James Bond vs his adversary blundering or making illegal moves because he has no clue how to play. To your point, it feels like Scrabble is used to indicate a mixture of cleverness akin to chess, but without the gravitas, and sometimes derision for perhaps being overly nerdy/something you do only when bored.
