I would have liked to have seen Hudson go a little further in the story. At first glance, he came off as a bit of a chickenshit that talked big. But when push came to shove, his bravery came through and he was very bit the warrior as the rest of the Marines. He did not turn tail like Burke, but rather fought hard until he was overrun. It would have been an interesting "growth" in his character's story. Yes, he was a smart ass and maybe even unreliable, but at the moment of truth he came through. Reminds me of the saying "Pressure can turn coal into diamonds."

In the German dub (which I watched first, back when I was a kid), Hudson's last words before he gets pulled down are a defiant "NOT YET!" that whoever did the translation added, and I liked that a lot. I was disappointed to see it was "missing" in the original version.
Also, as a fun side note, they also added Apone yelling "Hudson, don't forget your gun!" to the scene where the marines move out.

I think if Drake had survived he would have assaulted Hudson for his complaining and would need to be restrained from killing Burke, once his treachery was uncovered. Frost would have been cool under pressure. If Apone had survived, I'm not sure he would have listened to Ripley's advice as much as Hicks did. However I think Apone did respect Ripley after she'd shown her abilities with the power loader.

    • @TheLAGopher
      @TheLAGopher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I agree with most of your assessments. I agree Apone being more confident and experienced than Hicks would certainly have rejected Ripley's suggestion to nuke the colony, at least not at first and likely not while Lt. Gorman was only temporarly disabled. I think he would have tried
Hudson's suggestion to roll nerve gas canisters into the hive to at least kill off the remaining colonists and captured Marines to spare them being used as hosts. I think he would have maintained more discipline among the Marines and I believe that would have included notifying the dropship
of the nature of the Xeno threat and the need to up their security at their landing site while Apone and Gorman came up with another option.

He would have listened more closely to Ripley but would not want to give up his command. Where as I think Drake would say F it and nuke the whole site that Ripley recommended as well as the Alien ship.

I'm with you AT, Drake's toughness and go-get-it mentality when it came to blasting Xenomorphs would've made for an even more exciting Operations battle. I could even see him blasting a couple pulse rifles, or a flamethrower in one hand and pulse in the other, or simultaneously switching while everyone is moving to medical. I could also see him beating the shit out of Burke for what he did to Ripley and Newt while the others try to calm him down. Frost would've also made a cool addition too; he seemed to have the right sense of humor, and the one-liners in moments that the audience could relate to, like in Sub-Level 3.
My one question though is what the hell really happened to Wierzbowski? His death has always intrigued me for years, because it was the most random, non-descript death in the whole movie. I hear he got burned in the pulse ammo flames, or that Xeno acid got him, or a Xeno captured him for cocooning... all theories, no proof. Did the novel explain more what happened to him?

    • @purpleemerald5299
      @purpleemerald5299 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Samuel Fox When it cuts to Wierzbowski’s camera view, it shows him spinning around in a circle before it cuts off. Hudson later only references the fact that Dietrich and Apone are alive in the hive. This implies that he was likely killed by the xenomorphs. With all the screaming and spinning he was doing, it appears he was being assaulted from multiple angles, and thus was rapidly spinning around to check and protect all his flanks. If multiple xenos were closing in on him and he wasn’t seen being pulled up or away like the others, and if explosions and acid obviously didn’t kill him, then it can only mean one thing: he was killed by a xenomorph who got behind his unguarded flank. After all, why would he have been screaming for a while _before_ his camera was cut off and he clearly wasn’t being dragged away? Why else would Hudson not mention him when he was being so specific about who was left? It’s the only logical answer supported by everything the film showed us.

      The way it's cut /
      appears in the movie...
      it looks like Wierzbowski
      is killed alongside or almost
at the same moment as Crowe
      when (Frost's??) ammo-bag
      catches fire & explodes.
      More to the point...
it looks like Wierzbowski is staring
at the bag of ammo just as Hicks
is trying to pull him away
      (presumably, before it explodes).
      Simply put...
      I'm "assuming"
      that Wierzbowski
      was killed in the same
      ammo-blast as Crowe...
      but with W's death being
      a bit more delayed.
      But again...
      that is just speculation
      because of the difficult angles
as per the film's cutting/ editing.

      So...
      did Wierzbowski
      get taken by a Xeno??
When the Squad make it back to
the 'safety' of the armored vehicle...
Hicks comments about Apone & Dietrich
being alive (albeit, with low vitals)...
      but he never says anything
      about Wierzbowski.
      So I'm guessing that 'Bowski
was killed during the attack in the hive
      (along with Frost, Crowe, Drake
      and later... Spunkmeyer, Ferro,
      Gorman and Vazquez)...
      with Apone and Dietrich

For all you wondering, Navy Corpsman aka medics get attached/deployed with Marines. They are techniqually a department of the Navy thus why they dont have their own corpsman/medics. Its a great honor to serve with the Marines as a FMF corpsman. We get to wear their BDU's, and experience their service culture which is way different then the Navy's. So hard to choose. I think one of the testaments to just how GOOD this movie was, is that how many movies we’ve had through history where a military squad (or any group really) was just a bunch of bodies that the movie didn’t make you care about before killing them. They usually just exist in relation to the main hero and are there to up the body count and maybe raise the stakes a little. Through a combination of good writing, good directing, and good acting, these characters all were imbued with distinctive personalities, quirks, strengths, weaknesses AND idiosyncrasies. And they were able to pull it off despite many of them having just a scene or two, or just a couple of lines. Great stuff.

I heard in an interview with Rico Ross that he (Frost) got some lines from other characters because Cameron wanted to persuade him to be in the movie, as he had been offered a part in Full Metal Jacket at the same time. Maybe he got some lines that would''ve gone to Crowe or 'Baski, but since those two were both played by real life stuntmen, I don't think they were ever intended to do very much.

I would liked to have seen Sgt Apone survive a little longer, however I completely understand the reasoning behind his death/capture which ultimately leads to Hicks character development. Also, as stated in the video, Drake would have been great to see in action in the final shootout scene with the rest of the gang. Once again another great upload. Thanks for all your fantastic content. I was wondering if you've also read River of Pain, the follow up to Out of the Shadows? I've listened to the dramatised versions of both on Audible. With great performances from Rutger Hauer in Out of the Shadows and Colin Salmon in River of Pain. Personally I prefer River of Pain as I believe it's easier to imagine this as canon before I imagine events in Out of the Shadows as canon. I also really enjoyed how they slightly expanded Riplelys story and of course learning so much more about the Jorden family particularly little Newt 😀.

    Great video.
The one biggest let down in the movie was how Spunkmeyer obviously died off screen.
That the colonists got wiped out off screen also wasn't as bad as that added to the mystery as well as the horror of the marines finding the remains of the battle and remind me of a piece of history of the early english colonization of the US eastern coast where the colony of Roanoke seemingly disappeared without a trace.
Though semi canonically Hicks does survive (Alien3) as he was not inside his cryo pod but that was in the game Aliens: Colonial Marines and as far as I know not confirmed in any other media.

Yeah, they didn't really play that scene for tension. It was like he ran inside the ship closed the baydoor and she was killed immediately. I think viewers forget that Ripley was a competant crew member of a freighter, something like a 3rd mate on a ship. She knew right away the distances on the motion tracker was odd, as you'd have to be super cautious with distances concerning the maneuvering of a ship. She really was like a very competant engineer type character, someone who is very smart and capable of quickly understanding the enviroment and how to make use of anything found in it. She adapts quickly to the militaristic nature of the mission because of this, and I belive that is why. Engineering has many of the same level thinkin; blueprints, barricading, strong or weak structural points etc. Also She was the one to realize the dander of fighting under the fusion core at the plant.

It also could be by design, maybe they didn't want anyone left behind that could report what was going on or barrage LV-426 with the Sulaco (damn, that would be an awesome scene) . Whatever it is it makes for great a great story!

I think overall though I wanted more of the Drake and Vasquez partnership in the movie - I get that they were both Smart Gun operators so were split between the search teams but I always wanted Drake to escape the Hive unscathed and make it back aboard the APC. I played out so many different scenarios of the Hive scene with action figures as a kid....................I was so in love with this movie all through my childhood (& still to this day) that it was the basis of all my soldiers/figure playtimes. Not to mention drafting up alternate missions on my own screenplays for my favourite crew of ultimate bad asses from the minute I could type & use my first home computer. (yes I was that sad)

I have to say, good sir, that I have watched a number of your pieces now and the quality is superb, as are your insights and views on the two 'real' films in the pantheon :). If only the 'empty suits' at Fox had sought out such as you as a subject matter specialist we might not have ended up with the disappointing shower of {USMC language redacted :D} we ended up with. I was very excited when AvP was announced, for the novel I had read (entitled "Prey") was an excellent expansion of the tale. As a film, it is still okay but it is not what it should have been in and of itself nor as a stepping stone to piecing together the back story that ties the Predators, the Aliens and Humankind together. As to pretty much anything else, even those featuring the redoubtable Sigourney Weaver ... well, I refer back to the colourful USMC metaphorical phrases that seem appropriate :D.

Top 3 “wish they could have been in the latter stages”: Drake, Ferro, Crowe
Drake, for obvious reasons, would have given the team another much needed fighter and someone who paired well with Vasquez. Maybe that’s why they killed the character, so she could develop a bond with Hudson by the end that she likely wouldn’t have with Drake around. Regardless, he’d have been a good loose cannon character who was very capable, if a bit ill-disciplined. He seemed a bit anti-authority too so he might not have been as easy to talk down as Vasquez was regarding Gorman or Burke. Could have been an interesting way to ratchet up internal tension.
Ferro was just such a distinctive character, I’d have liked to see her more and seen how she holds up under combat. I get why they had to get rid of her, to an extent: they needed the dropship to not be an option. What would have been really interesting is if Ferro was able to eject. Not sure if the Cheyenne can do that since it’s capable of breaking atmosphere, but it should be an option for atmospheric flight. If she was able to eject, you could achieve the same result of not having access to transport, the crash that still wastes the APC, but with the benefit of another body on the ground. She’d have made an interesting addition as a marine who wasn’t a line trooper/rifleman. She was always very cool and calm in the cockpit but the destruction of the dropship could have been a great character development as she’s suddenly thrust into the world of the troops on the ground as something of a fish out of water. That could have rattled her and led to a character shift, or she could have stepped up like Gorman did. Great possibilities without wildly throwing off the situation or group dynamic. It could also have presented an interesting portrayal of humans vs synthetics as It’s unknown if Ferro is qualified for remote piloting like Bishop is. She might not have taken to a synthetic encroaching on her area of expertise.
Crowe is just a “I want to know more about this character” addition. Him, Wierzbowski, and Frost probably have the least characterization. The main reason I picked him over Wierzbowski or Frost was because Frost jokingly was going to “call [Crowe’s] folks” when they got back without him. Might have been interesting to see the role reversal of Crowe potentially having to call Frost’s folks instead.
Of course I’d have liked more Hudson and Hicks too. Hicks’ treatment in Alien 3 was beyond criminal. It’s maybe the only thing about Aliens Colonial Marines that is nice (if far-fetched).
