Great talk guys. St Andrews is the only place I've ever been where I've actually physically felt the atmosphere of the place as I drove into the town. I did a 2month camping tour around Europe in the mid 80's and after returning to London, hired a car the next morning, drove to Edinburgh, stayed in a caravan park (slept in the car!), got up the next morning, drove to St Andrews & walked straight on the 1st tee - couldn't believe it! Hired a set of clubs from the little cubby house there (not sure if it's still there now though) they were John Letters Master Model 4 irons, 20pound deposit, should have kept them! I had 86 with 42 putts. I swear the putter I got was 5ft long! I'll never forget it - Dale from Melbourne, Australia

Rick, loved listening to this. I'm 51, been playing for 36 years, Australian, I did not know the priceless turf was played in reverse, I knew about the 22 holes and reduced to 18. I love the history of golf and what better place to discuss than St.Heaven. St. Andrews is my number 1, number 2, number 3 number 4 number 5 on my bucket list. Throw in the super talented 22 year old phenomenon Min Woo Lee. This was just great listening. Thank you Rick. Keep doing podcasts like this for us Aussies. We appreciate the magnificence of St. Andrews, even if we have not been to the U.K.

I watched a Bryson "what's in the bag" the other day and I was expecting someone who was quite focussed and intense and it was the total opposite, he was really relaxed and really nice. The media portrayal of him just didn't match up to what he was really like.

    • @OtisisCookie

Funny how that’s usually the case with media portrayals, I also binged Bryson’s TH-cam channel, the dude seems like a passionate golf nerd 🏌🏽‍♂️ it’s really nice seeing how he interact on and off the courses

I love playing "The Himalayas" putting course to the side of the caddy's hut down the first. Not many places where you can play a putting course on/next to a Championship course with this history. I'm not from St Andrew's but I got married there as my wife studied at the university. We stopped the wedding car after leaving the church and got pictures taken on the Swilken Bridge, the golfers were happy to wait - nice one!

Hi. Glad to hear you had a greate time in St Andrews. Residents of St Andrews means actually living here. A holiday home wil not give the 240 pound Links ticket unfortunatly. It is other ways to get the ticket, but they are more expensive and more dificult to lay your hands on. Thats also incude a waiting list. We will love to play with you next time you visit. AND its a lower prise when you play with a ticketholder too. Best regards A.

Interesting discussion about scoring and cheating. When I play I keep two scores. My “be kind to me score” where I don’t count the air shots, scuffs along the ground and three off the tee disasters. I also recorded my real score which records all the disasters. At the end of the round I then compare the two scores and it motivates me to improve because I know how well I will be able to play when I cut out all the silly mistakes. Just a quick tip that may help someone think differently about their scoring. Great podcast lads!!

The last time I played St. Andrews it was £35 a round while we were waiting for our tee time we went in the Tom Morris Woollen Mill by the first tee where you can sit up stairs and lookout over the course with a complimentary cup of tea or coffee , St. Andrews it’s a fantastic place to be for any golfer.

I question your passion for golf when you are both underwhelmed by Phil’s win at Kiawah Island. It was a fantastic tournament on a bucket list course, won by a man who has rebuilt his body and used every bit of technology to maximise his potential physically. He then went ever further and trained his mind by playing 45 holes a day so he could maintain concentration in the big moments when playing 18. Yet you were more excited about McNuggets.

I live in Louisiana and when I first saw the old course many years ago on a grainy satellite feed before hd TV's, I was perplexed. It looked terrible. I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to play that course. But now that I play golf and understand the game - - And the HD broadcast where you can really see the course, I think it's gorgeous and I would love to visit, much less play.

Played with a guy named Ben yesterday.
My 2nd 18 in two days. My round was pure ridiculousness from 85 to 100 which is not normal for me.
But Mr. Ben this guy was an insane golfer. I've never seen a guy hit a 5 iron 220yds. Ben hit a drive 390+ yards basically 400yds. This guy is like 5'7" normal thin framed, no huge muscles. When he hit an iron the ground shook, I could feel it in my feet. His irons are traditionally Lofted. Caviat though Ben couldn't putt to save his life. 10 birdie chances within 10/15ft and missed all of them on the low end. If Ben practices his putting, he can be on tour no problem.
I know now what it feels like to play with a pro level player. Every shot was insane, everytime. It was a shame that he couldn't make his birdies. I wanted him to make them all. I putted way better. I had a fee one putts and made some clinchers. Putting was great ball striking was nasty.
I hope Ben finds my comment and practices his putting because I'd really like to see him go pro one day, was a good guy, didn't swear, had patience with my terrible golf and we also had a couple with us and was the lady's first game. To say the least she was just getting into golf but has a long way.
He had patience with us all.

I agree 100% Rick. When you play for money you play by the rules. If you are playing a friendly and you improve your lie a little bit I really don't care. If you aren't playing for money your score doesn't matter to anyone but yourself. When I play a round with my mate (wait, that didn't sound right) we have alternate mulligans. If I take a mulligan I can't take another one until he does. It works really good for us. FWIW, I don't keep a handicap. If I kept a handicap I would play differently.

About the cheating part - the best way to prevent it is to determine what kind of golf are you going to play? When I play with friends who don't play that often. We decide before we are going to play. So for beginners we have easy round golf. If you have a bad lie drop it on the fairway for 1 extra stroke, same for the bunker. I play for real and let them have a good time.

From someone who doesn't play golf. I'm 50/50 on the "dear Rick" bit. I wouldn't count the air miss as a swing, just because that seems too serious, however hitting the ball and it scuffs along the floor, unlucky, that counts.
Suppose can come up with your own rules, so maybe you let them off with the odd scuff. If you're not going pro, then does it matter that much 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @DirtySanchez1973
      @DirtySanchez1973 3 ปีที่แล้ว

According to the rules it is the intent to strike the ball that counts as a stroke. You get practice swings that don't count but if your intent is to hit the ball then it counts as a stroke. I wouldn't count it if I'm playing with friends but you could very well get disqualified or have penalties added to your score if you don't count it in a (tournament *edited). Sometimes I think people take the rules of golf way too seriously if you are playing friendly rounds with nothing on the line.

In 50 years I have never played for money. I think there is nothing more poisonous. It makes it harder to deal with cheats, whom I have always called out immediately and loudly. Do it right and you won't lose any friends.

On the dear Rick discussion. The guys a high handicap golfer, and may have got his handicap by doing those things. He’s maybe cheating himself more than anything. If he plays by the rules, he might be a 36 handicap golfer, and just get more points opportunities without cheating.

They should play for each others favourite car... Or better still to be able to crush the others favourite car....

What, wai- a fresh air shot counts as a shot??? Turns out I've been inadvertently cheating all these years. 🙄

I know this is "normal" for your everyday lives...but it gets confusing for some of us Yanks when you say quid instead of pound...I had to look up that quid is a slang term for money and just replaces pounds. Love your content...keep it coming guys!!!

Not sure about educating cheats Rick. Most cheats know they’re cheating. You telling me anyone you’ve ever played with doesn’t know that an air shot counts as an actual shot?! Or that duffing one in the bunker actually counts.

Their handicap system already accommodates the cheating. If he wins regularly from cheating, his handicap goes down, and it should balance out. It’s likely he is cheating himself more than them. I might point it out in that way. Makes no difference to the other guys, but it is fooling yourself about how well you play.

If it was Lee Westwood winning(which wouldn't happen). You would have been interested. Im sorry it was a bad take. Constant criticism from not Rick about American golfers. You never seem to like any of them. That was a hard golf tournament to win. Look how many people struggled in the PGA Championship. Phil deserves a ton of credit.
