    While i can understand the complaints about Sorcerers, I believe that one of their biggest untapped potentials for roleplaying is directly tied to the source of their powers. Sorcerers are the only class who didn't choose to become their respective class. Wizards had to study, Paladins had to swear their oath, Warlocks had to make a deal, etc etc. This gives the option to explore how your character feels about their powers. Perhaps they hate them, and wish that had never manifested, or maybe it inflates their ego and sense of importance.

      The super arrogant water elemental sorcerer always talking down to the sorcerer because he can make water spouts without having to study for them. And has always been a sort of big fish in a small pond because, as kids, he was the ONE with inborn powers. So he's used those little tricks he's learned and his charisma to get his way. But he's never learned how to do BIG things with his magic. Whenever he used to, it big time backfires. But...nobody else needs to know that.

    • @Merilirem
      @Merilirem 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +117

      Exactly. People don't get that Sorcerers possess their own powers. Its not external study or some demon or god giving them a spark of something magical. Its their very being that grants them this power. They can hate it sure but they can also feel like gods because lesser mortals will never understand the true nature of magic the way a sorcerer does.

      My last character was a warlock sorcerer who was exposed to a eldritch being when they were a baby and had no choice but to bear the powers. The powers slowly attempting to corrupt them over time. Pretty fun, the campaign ended prematurely though so I hope to bring them back one day. roleplaying them understanding why they have magic seems so fun.

      That's me! I played a draconic sorcerer once who had dragon claws which he hated about himself, since he felt he could never gently hold the hand of a lover, and his claws kept growing back to tear through his gloves
      Anyone can have things about them that they hate, but a sorcerer just is that way, they don't have the ability to change... they just have a long path towards self acceptance or a life of self denial

      I agree so much with this.
      It's awesome to have both full backstory flexibility and the potential to be in conflict with your powers, plus the way it lets you mesh the mechanics of multi classing into your character.
      My bucket list multi class that I've been struggling to make work is a wild magic sorcerer who took to studying as a wizard to better understand and manipulate their magic.

      My archeologist character gained Draconic powers because of a Saw-like trap in a lost tomb protecting (you guessed it) an ancient (dead) dragon pharaoh. The trap wasn't lethal, but the sacrifice was she ended up with a dragon's arm in addition to being gifted the spells necessary to escape the trap. Now every time she uses those particular spells, she loses a bit more humanity... but they're really useful spells! She also gained a voice in her head that tempts her with power, but is also extremely knowledgeable about History and Arcana, her two greatest passions
      (This is all flavour, of course. As a Human, she started with the Magic Initiate Feat, and an early dip into Rogue gave her Expertise, which she spent on History and Arcana)

      I've played D&D since the 80s as well and to me it happens ALL THE TIME but not because of their bloodlines but because of their 'double D' charisma.
      While potentially any charisma based character can dominate a campaign & hold it hostage the other charisma classes have more restrictions, so its only really the Sorcerer that can carte blanche be 'the main character' at anytime ruining other peoples fun.

      @@helline9 Closest I got to this was when I played a Sorcerer/Favored Soul/Mystic Theurge who brought his faith in the goddess of magic to a foreign land and essentially started a new congregation there. But none of that was planned, it just sort of came about, and in future campaigns that church featured prominently as a constant reminder of that original character's deeds.
      Also, this was well before the whole Sorcerer bloodlines thing really existed, and my character was an elf who got transformed into a half dragon by Bahamut. So a draconic sorcerer before it was officially a sub-class.

      I agree. The choice to adventure is the interesting part of a D&D game, not necessarily the origin of the character unless that origin is what leads them to adventure. One of the things playing Fate games taught me is that relationships to the other characters are also important. And my personal experience tells me that I can twist a class description any way I'd like to justify a theme so long as my table agrees--and twisting the aesthetic of a class is a much easier sell than twisting the mechanics of a class.

      @Finalplayer14 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +72

      Absolutely this! I find Sorcerery is at its strongest when you have them have conflict within their sorcery origin- who's to say that your Sorcerer didn't have to sacrifice something or perform some task to get their powers? Maybe for your PC to become a Dragon Sorcerer they had to sacrifice someone important to them to a Dragon and as payment, the Dragon bestowed draconian power to them. Or maybe to become a Divine Soul they had to travel through some old dusty tomb and avoid a series of traps and puzzles to find at the end a potion that once drunk gave them celestial powers related to the tomb's deity.
      In both cases, you've got a character who's got powers and possibly even enemies or allies to work with. The Dragon Sorcerer may want to kill the dragon who may have manipulated them or forced them into that sacrifice or may now be working for the Dragon as an underling. For the Divine Soul, they could have rivals/enemies who are hunting them now because they got the power of the tomb first, or maybe since you've unlocked these powers there's a small subset of people who may worship or regale you as some savior or reincarnation of their divine champion. Interest abound!

    I like the subclass idea but if your issue with the Sorcerer is that they did not actively earn/seek their power or have a clear narrative hook to become an adventurer, then I'm not exactly sure this subclass solves that problem. At least, not entirely.
    The subclass still has something happen to the PC for them to gain magic, not be an active participant, they're still just randomly given magical powers but now the player potentially has unwanted baggage of having to deal with the curse.
    The general "problem" presented in this video I feel is a fairly easy one to solve. I can't personally speak to the main character syndrome but because I've never personally encountered it with sorcerers. Most players I've seen straight up don't care to explain HOW they got magic, they just do and their motivations have little to do with their class. But if you want players to have cool stories about how they got their magic, have them seek it out. One could have heard tales that drinking the blood of a dragon would grant great power and after acquiring said blood, boom! Draconic bloodline sorcerer. A scholar studying the Far Realms or who was abducted by mind flayers aka BG3 now is an Aberrant Mind sorc.
    In any case, fun video and I did enjoy the perspective given.

    @UndeadMozelle หลายเดือนก่อน +70

    Honestly I feel like this is only an issue if you treat a character's class *as* their backstory. If anything, a character's power being innate frees their backstory from the class, allowing your backstory to be basically anything because you dont really have to justify how they developed their skills.
    Like, yeah, a rogue can be a thief who struggled to survive on the mean streets, but they can also be a swashbuckling local hero, or a social-climbing noble assassinating their way to the top. A sorcerer can be any of those in a way that also accounts for their innate abilities - a wild magic sorcerer living on the streets because an ill-timed surge made them a fugitive, a dashing storm sorcerer using their flashy powers to impress the commoners, a draconic sorcerer using their powers to assassinate their way up the social ladder because they believe its their due. If the most interesting thing about a sorcerer's backstory is their subclass you haven't actually written a backstory.
    Basically if you're writing chosen one backstories for your sorcerer it's a skill issue, not a problem with the class.

    • @caiusdrakegaming8087
      @caiusdrakegaming8087 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think Pointy Hat does it that way because... backstories can be anything so it'd make it a little bit impossible for him to make these kinds of videos if he had to take into account the millions of possible origins for a sorc character to have. It's easier to actually go with the class being the generalized average of a character. And when it think of it in that way, yeah it would naturally lead to the 'holier-than-thou' kind of personality you'd expect from dick players that would play a sorc like that.
      At the end of the day, he's got to do it this way because he knows he can't make these D&D with a Twist videos if he has to always remember that any class can be interesting and fun on its own if the backstory is creative enough. This generalized opinion he uses is the only way he can realistically do the twists.

      Correct. They don't suddenly wake up one day knowing how to cast a fireball faster than a wizard, just like a fighter don't one day wake up suddenly knowing how to handle their sword better. Both classes learn their skills through life experience and training. A wizards spends time studying books while a sorcerer experiment with their own power, testing it, trying different things with it until they discover something that works.

      The same happens with Sorcerers, they're more direct relation with the weave inmediately gives them much more potential but it will still require effort to come to the point where they can alter reality/cast Wish.
      Depending on the narrative/world someone doesn't even reach inmediately lvl1 just bc of being a Sorcerer.

    I have a player in my game who is now part of four games in total and plays a sorcerer in all of them (this is not counting several previous campaigns where he was also always sorcerer). Over the summer we did a One Shot on the side and he tried a different class for a change... and you would not believe how many times he said "Well if I was a sorcerer right now I would just do xzy... I miss being a sorcerer".
    Never tried it myself, but yeah, sounds like the gameplay is pretty amazing.

    As someone who already loves Sorcerers the way they are, I recognize that I am not the target audience for this video, so believe me when I say that the following passage is written with kindness and respect, BUT...
    ...I honestly think the whole "nepo baby sorcerer" is the same meme level as, like, the horny bard or the sugar baby warlock 😅It's funny and all, but really not something I think anyone should take seriously when creating a sorcerer character.
    First off, I'd just like to put it out there that I think the best source of inspiration for sorcerer characters is something like The X-Men - The Sorcerer is basically a fantasy version of the Mutants, with supernatural powers that they all learn to control and choose how to feel about in their own special ways. I'm really not an MCU person but I feel like the X-Men franchise has lots of great inspiration for compelling and nuanced characters.
    One take on the Sorcerer I really like is as an artist - you might associate that with Bards on the flavor level or Wizards because they have to study magic to learn it, but when you think about it, everyone on the planet has the physical ability to pick up a pen and use it to apply ink to a sheet of paper. Obviously there's lots of theory to learn, but all of that is in the service of refining your inherent abilities to navigate the medium, and you didn't work for those - what you work for is precision and habit and application of them. Anyone can draw, paint, sculpt, etc - but you still need to practice and refine your skill to actually be an artist.
    I think the curse angle is really great, but it's also something that I don't think is entirely absent from the current Sorcerer - In my view, when making a Sorcerer, you should already be thinking about how they got their powers, and how they actually feel about them. Like, maybe your Shadow sorcerer was normal until they got mortally wounded in battle, presumed dead, and left in a ditch - and although a keen-eyed Cleric managed to heal them just before their soul left their body, the brief time they spent without a heartbeat has left them with one foot in the grave, not quite alive but also not quite dead. While they fall into the zone of "character arc determined by events outside their control", there's still lots of unresolved hooks in them - are they horrified by the constant feeling of Death breathing down their neck, or are they exhilerated by their newfound powers? Their motivation might just be to be the cool chosen one here to save the world - but it might also be to find a way to complete the healing and become fully alive again, which would give them back their enjoyment of life but also make them lose their powers. (Think Curse of the Black Pearl) Or maybe, it's a Final Destination type deal, where they know they cheated death, and now they're doing everything in their power to prevent it from catching up to them? OR, it's a The Crow type situation, where they've been given a chance to make things right, at which point they'd be able to fully move on from life.
    I honestly kinda wish Chaos Sorcerers had more elements of calculated gambles and risk/reward (have you played Dicey Dungeons, by the way? I feel like it would be right up your alley lol), but I think they have lots of potential flavor-wise in this aspect - you're not just a Chosen One, you're just some person stuck with incredible power that you are unable to control or use safely. Embracing it is fun but on the other hand, are you sure you REALLY want that? Maybe they're on a quest to find some kind of artifact that would let them fully control their powers so they don't turn any more loved ones into houseplants or whatever, but maybe they're also just plainly trying to get rid of their powers entirely?
    Which kind of brings me into another aspect that I think has some great potential - opposite to the Chosen One archetype, the Sorcerer can also just be, like, some dude? I know a lot of people really like the Fighter because they like the concept of just a regular little guy with a big sword surrounded by a bunch of crazy magical divine magical superpeople, but the sorcerer can also be just some random peasant farmer who found a fallen star out in their turnip field and now has weird powers they don't understand. They're not a beloved musician, they're not a chosen servant of a powerful god, they're not a holy crusader sworn to justice, they're not some criminal mastermind, etc etc - just some guy who didn't even learn how to read until adulthood because they were too busy helping out at the family farm, who can now suddenly shoot light beams out of their hands and is getting dragged into a bunch of political conspiracies and world-ending threats that they never cared about unless it affected their next harvest. You might think a Wizard who went to trans-inclusive Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is more interesting, but there's also something to be said for a PoV character who knows as little as the player about the inner machinations and advanced magic system and centuries of lore in that homebrew world the DM spent half a year theorycrafting for.
    I also really hope the Dragon flavoring of the Draconic subclass isn't scaring you off? 😅 I always saw that as, like, the way to do basically any theme connected to any of the base elements in any way? Maybe you want to play a Sorcerer based on, idk, The Joker from Batman (1989), who fell into a vat of acid and now looks like a total weirdo who goes around electrocuting and poisoning and melting and charming people - I really don't think there's any reason that WOULDN'T work as an Acid Draconic Sorcerer. (Except maybe the wings, but who even gets to 14th level in a campaign? :P)
    I really liked hearing your thoughts, and I love the new subclass!!

The lack of a spellbook is simple due to them never having bothered to write down any spells, instead they've just sort of memorized their favourite ones and the metamagic/wildmagic is just the result of them trying to improvise their way through spellcasting.
      The sorcerer doesn't "learn" polymorph. They just show up one morning, all excited like. "Guys! Guys! Remember that time I accidentally turned Mordred into a newt!? I've finally figured out how I did it! Now I can actually target it at whomever I want! ... Most of the time, anyway."

    Real iceberg of discourse floating by vibes on this one, truly a problem I have never encountered. I think cause I and people I play with just don't think of sorcerers that way?
    The questions of how you got your spark in and of itself we play around with a lot, but the character questions sorcerer sparks has always been more "and how did the world respond to that power? how did you? how did that shape you?". It has very Tiefling energy in how quickly you can go woobie with that idea if you wanted, with built in strong and custom aesthetics! And of course the nepo baby vibes if you'd like, but you could also have your character put themselves in that position in the first place and sought out the conditions to get a spark (intentionally sneaking into the nuclear reactor as it were).
    But even in its classic form, all rights to not liking happenstance, but tbh showing the spider-man spider bite is like... the key for why that flavor is so appealing. It's not the bite itself that's important, it's the character response to it. What do you do when you simply come into power? Unplanned for and unearned? How does the world respond to that change and your choices relating to it? Are you received like Susan Storm or Ben Grimm? In response to worlds thoughts do you become Magneto? Charles? Cyclops? Rogue? Storm?
    Though I can see how MCS could set in for some people, it doesn't really feel more 'main character' than any other common character arc trope you'd find in other classes? But idk maybe that's just me. Likewise the response being the character question was always self evident to me, but I'm also not a person who ever thought fighter was boring knowing you'd have to bring ideas to it so clearly I shouldn't consider myself the baseline. Love the new sub tho!!! I think it fits super well, and there's so much to play around with!

    • @colinakersakers44

      Yeah his logic for them being innately MCS kinda falls flat if you apply it to other classes. If anything Paladins give me more chosen one vibes. • @Merilirem
      @Merilirem 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@colinakersakers44 Cleric not really. Clerics are rare when it comes to chosen one stories because they have to be followers of the god in a more concrete way. Chosen ones typically fall under personal specialness of some kind. So here's the common culprits.
      Warlock - Pacts with demons are a classic. There is literally an anime called Black Clover where the MC may as well be a Hexblade Warlock. Its easy power with plot stuff to go with it and no need for study which is boring. As for who chose, well its the demon or whatever.
      Sorcerer - Yes, they have innate magic and that means you can skip study and training even. Just have them do magic whenever you need it. Born better.
      Paladin - Either blessed by gods while on a mission or possessing a will so powerful it becomes capable of performing miracles via a promise you made to never give up or whatever. Yeah this is VERY main character even if its not chosen one specifically. Also its a knight in shining armor which is a classic.
      Druid - This is a funny one but woodland critters and nature being your backup is pretty common too. The tree's chose you and you speak for them child of the forests.
      Eldritch Knight fighter - This is for when you want your chosen hero to learn some magic tricks but not really be a boring wizard. They just had enough of a spark to learn magic so they did, but not really.

    I am continually amazed that no setting makes Sorcerers associated with Nobility. Their power is inherited, they're all about bloodlines, etc. You could totally make that fit with the noble classes, and could even have different noble houses be associated with different magical bloodlines as a way to give them flavor!

    In my settings I made it so that being a sorcerer is like being a mage in the dragon age series. Unlike every other class that goes through intensive studying and training to learn how to wield and control magic, sorcerers are born with magic but without control. A sorcerer's powers are often sparked by intense emotions during adolescence and can be quite destructive, thus sorcerers are viewed as being inherently dangerous. And, like the dragons and faeries that people hunt down for money, sorcerers are also valuable magical creatures because they are literally living magical batteries. Being a sorcerer means having to constantly convince yourself and everyone around you that you are in control and defending yourself from any potential threats trying to kill or enslave you. So much like the all powerful dragons who must hide their dens and wear disguises to not be constantly hounded, so to must the sorcerers. Even sorcerers from established families have to be careful to not get held for ransom, murdered by an opposing family, and so on. Sorcerers don't just inherit the might of magical creatures, but the unwanted attention it brings too.

      My sorcerer has a story somewhat aligned with this. He’s a Storm Sorcerer born from a long line of elemental sorcerers. Unfortunately, due to his well known lineage and his power, he’s been constantly targeted by pirates, nobles, and mercenaries hoping exploit his abilities for their own gain. He’s constantly on guard and has never been away from his family for his own protection. Until our current campaign and now he’s with group of people he doesn’t know if he can trust and so he’s very to himself and doesn’t want attention on him at all, but is forced to because of the charisma stat. So yeah it’s easy to make it so that a sorcerer is not the “main character” or “ chosen one”.

    “Sorcerers are inherently the chosen one” is a hot take when Warlocks exist, imo. Especially in terms of what happens at the table; sorcerers get their PC introduced, and that’s usually one of the last times their origin has massive relevance, whereas a warlock has a continuing and evolving relationship with their patron that means they’ll need to get a lot of narrative focus.

    • @pwnorbepwned

      Yeah, “risked their soul to get their powers” is such a narrow view of warlocks. Especially when “is romantically involved with their patron who gives powers as a gift” or “accepted a role given them by a benevolent patron that literally CHOSE them” are examples of warlock-patron relationships given IN THE BOOKS. Not all warlocks are soul-selling fiendlocks.

    I feel the complaint about the Sorcerers being a "Boring Class" because "There is nothing interesting in how they got their powers" is inherently flawed as it fundamentally works off the principle that:
    POWER = INTERESTING
    Which is the same idea that causes the flood of Mary Sues in fanfiction to this day.
    At the end of the day ANY class can be played to the most boring degree. After a certain point it's not the class that's the problem but the player playing it. And being 'THE protagonist of D&D' isn't limited to just Sorcerers. Any player can fall into that if the DM isn't careful.
    Like all of your complaints about Sorcerers can be leveled at Spiderman. He didn't WORK for his power, it was just fate/happenstance. But Peter Parker is still a compelling character, both in crossovers/Superhero Teams and in Solo comics. So what's the problem?

    • @Finalplayer14
      @Finalplayer14 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The origin of a Sorcerer's sorcery can come from pretty much anywhere- the only limit being you can not learn or practice your way into getting the power like Bards, Druids, or Wizards. Some examples from the books "An ancient dragon facing death bequeathed some of its magical power to you" or "You were blessed by a fey being or marked by a demon." or "You were implanted with a mind flayer tadpole, but your transformation into a mind flayer never occurred" You could even go the route of having to earn your powers via impressing a creature to get its blessing/boon. The end point being "You've got magic that is within you now and you'll have to work to hone and control it."
      The important aftermath of this, is understanding how your character responds to these powers, how the world responds to them, and what they plan on doing with them.

    • @ThePa1riot
      @ThePa1riot หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well if the powers are indeed shunted on to the character, that IS very Sorcerer and NOT very Warlock. I feel like in looking at chosen ones for sorcerers, people often forget that being a chosen one tends to be a pretty bad time. I'm a big fan of magic as a curse for sorcerers. My favourite sorcerer is a divine soul sorcerer I made who's family was blessed by a sun god a few generations back. Thing is, their mortal bodies can't handle the divine blood they've been given. It burns inside their veins and has caused every generation of her family to die young. This character now seeks to end the divinity of her bloodline before it kills her. Either by fulfilling some unknown destiny the god blessed them to fulfill in the first place, or finding some ulternative to end her family's suffering. This character was inspired by my own experience with chronic pain and the fear of dying young that comes from being born with chronic illness. Haven't gotten a chance to play her yet, but she's one of my favs.

Fighters, Rogues, Barbarians, Warlocks & Clerics can just as easily use the "I'm just born that way" trope, and sorcerers can likewise be made to have to earn their powers (perhaps they needed to be imbibed with them, which took some effort, or they had to awaken them and are continuing down that path). All depends on how the setting handles sorcerers.

    It's really weird how you think those who happen to be magic because they live in a magic universe are the "Protagonist wannabes' as opposed to those who pact with a greater power (either warlock or clerics). Something commonly expected to be a plot point in the narrative. Played for many years and never seen a sorcerer approach that in story or player behavior.
    Additionally your highlighted examples of sorcerers are far from sorcerers, Draco Malfoy literally goes to magic school he is a wizard through and through, most magical girls have a character (almost always a cuddly mascot) that gives them power in exchange for them working for them like warlocks.
    Most fantasy worlds with these classes are going to have a decent saturation of magical people, even a 1 in 100k sorcerer isn't strange. Choosing to use and expand their magic, like fighters and monks who use and expand their magical skills do shouldn't be treated as super unique. Their is entire species that gain casting as a feature like Drow and Tieflings, sorcerers are like an extension of that.

    You have an issue with things like Aasimar and sorcerer because you refuse to acknowledge that a compelling narrative can come from the consequence of simply being those things rather than becoming those things. Which, I also have to say, is incredibly weird because that was your favorite thing about the tiefling but you don't want to explore that here. These characters are gifted kids. There's a million ways that that can create problems for the individual in the real world because of how it defines their relationships and how they navigate life. Explore those problems. Explore what happens when they have to navigate life outside of the small town that thought they were special. Have them meet a more accomplished sorcerer who puts them in their place for resting on their laurels. Have a cult of dragon worshipers cause problems in their name and see how they deal with it. Etc, etc, etc.

    I think there is a lot of good potential in a sorcerer who did not choose their power. Someone who wakes up with magic, no idea why and barely able to control it? They have a vastly different story than someone who devoted themselves to a pursuit of magical power

    I've never really encountered the main character syndrome at my tables with sorcerers, so I'm lost at the issue there. It kinda is an issue that can come from any class, if you do it right.
    But I do have two sorcerers that have their flavor down, my own character and a player of mine.
    First being my character, Wild Magic Sorcerer. Some wizard got high on magic and extended a bloodline of Wild Magic Sorcerer, the unstableness being greater the longer the bloodline is. He's timid, nervous, and not a fighter. He has struggles using his magic and relys on his older brother more(combat wise, my sorcerer is adventuring to keep him from being too stupid). So most of the campaign I plan to just have him get more confident in the backround and help protect his brother more.
    The second is that of my player, they have a Runechild sorcerer. They were studying magic to become a wizard, but in some of their research they cursed themselves and are very unstable. Now banned from their college they are going to try and research their curse and attempt to break it. This is most defintely the subclass you made, although we just flavored the Runechild to be a little different.
    I feel the cursed subclass could simply just be just a flavor thing, not an actual subclass. You can absolutely fill in flavor into any subclass, you don't have to be restrained by what the PHB says it is.

    I think my favorite sorcerer narratives are ones where the character tries to carve out an ordinary life for themselves. I think it’s why I like superheros, or otherwise supernatural characters, who are parents; because they don’t want to be special great heroes of the prophecy of protagonistia, they want to be comfortable and happy.

    The interesting thing about sorcerer is not what heppened to them to gain those powers, it's what they choose to do with the powers bestowed upon them and how growing up with them shaped them as a person. Were they raised under unbelievable pressure from their family to become a great spellcaster and continue their bloodline? Did they fold under the pressure and run away or are they on a mission to prove themselves to their family elders? Were they the first in a long time to awaken their sorcerous lineage? How did their family react? Did they abandon them out of fear from their newfound power or force them to use it for the family's gain? There's also the general question of "What did they decide to do with their power once they found out about it?" did they decide to become a hero helping those less fortunate or a villain using their new powers to force their will upon others (for an evil-aligned campaign or as a start of a character arc)? The fact that you couldn't think of any of these questions to make a sorcerer character compelling and interesting is your own writing skill-issue, not the fault of the sorcerer. Also the fact that you showed spider-man of all characters while talking about this yet not realizing it utterly baffles me.

    This video inspired me to make a sorcerer in the “I got magical radiation poisoning” category who got there by their own choices. They were a friend and follower of a globally/regionally (depending on campaign scale) controversial figure and actively chose to continue to be by their side as that friend pushed things too far - kingdoms poured their ancient reserve spell scrolls on the friend, like a magical nuke, irradiating the now-sorcerer PC. The friend can have survived the attack by a mysterious benefactor, or have died. Whichever the DM decides is best for the campaign. But I think this is a fun backstory for a sorcerer! It comes with a built in character goal too - find the friend they were separated from during the nuking (or discover that they’re dead).
    The subclass you gave us would be perfect for this I think. The magical radiation makes the PC all melty, especially when they use it

    Before I watch this video, I'mma say Sorcerer is my current favorite class in DnD in terms of narrative because...
    I LOVE classes that have built-in conflict and history within them. Warlocks and Paladins also fall into this category for me. Sorcerers are my favorite because their powers can come from anything you could imagine and because of that their possibility for built-in class conflict is limitless! You could have a Sorcerer whose bloodline or soul was blessed or cursed by a creature and now you've got an enemy or ally to work with, you could have interacted with some magic item and got superpowers for it, you could be getting hunted because you have these innate powers and people want to harness it. You could even have things like X family members are trying to kill you because you inherited the family's shame and they don't want that getting out in the world or they're jealous and want you dead. You can also do superhero stuff like getting bit by something for superpowers. Whatever floats your boat, the only limit I can think of is that Sorcery isn't learned, you have to be given it, come in contact with it, or born with it.
    The only very specific issues I've had with their Mechanics is at end game you don't get access to Shapechange or True Polymorph. Too many subclasses exist for the Sorcerer where this spell would make perfect sense to have for them to not have it. And the fact that they can't use their bodies as a focus/cannot ignore non-consumed or costly Material Components for their Sorcerer spells. It would be a good way to visually see the differences between a Sorcerer, Wizard, and Warlock spell casting when you can show a Sorcerer casting fireball with no staff, wand, crystal, or bat guano they just do it while the other two have to fiddle with external stuff to do it.

      The new subtle spell is a bit better than the old one if you want casting with fewer restrictions
      Sorcerers not getting shapechange makes sense, they can't change what they are, but if you want to be a draconic sorcerer who turns into a dragon, try the draconic transformation spell instead

    • @Finalplayer14
      @Finalplayer14 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nyanbrox5418 I disagree! Why can’t a Dragon Sorcerer a person who has dragon magic coursing through their soul or blood not turn into a Dragon? Why can they Polymorph into a Beast but not the thing they are supposed to be embodying. And mind you it’s not just a Dragon Sorcerer thing but a thing for all of them- it makes more sense that they can turn into these creatures than them not being able to. Not saying they need to- it should be an option for them.

    What the- so... your problem with the Sorcerer... is that...
    they're TOO interesting to the point where they may as well be the Protagonist of the entire canpaign...
    and your solution to this, is to have them not be that interesting...
    which creates the problem of the Sorcery not being interesting enough on their own outside of how they got their powers...
    But don't be that interesting because if they do, they'll be too interesting...
    Which leads to...
    I gotta say... this is one of the most interesting Love/Hate Sorcerer vids I've listened to in a while 🤣

  • @koibubbles3302

    The key of playing a sorcerer is to make their whole business not related to their class. Like, yeah, I got my powers from my mom, but on an unrelated note, my pet giraffe was taken from me and I would do anything to get her back. The family powers also plays really easily into black sheep narratives, as you’re using the thing your family is known for (Magic) to go against your family. My second ever dnd character was an elf sorcerer (wild magic, sorry pointy hat) and the campaign fizzled out before I could really get into playing him, but he was a self interested rich guy who thought he was above everyone else, cause he was born with a gift. He’s out adventuring basically to feed his ego, so he can feel important and brag about his travels. Standard elf stuff. If I could give him an arc it’d probably be about him realizing there’s better reasons to adventure than for glory. A lot of that can just naturally arise through seeing his party do absolutely crazy things just to help a village in need, or to make money for their kids back home, and how much more fulfilling they find their tasks than he does.

    Agree with another comment that mentioned sorcerers are the only caster class that didn’t choose their powers, and for this reason, I’ve always seen sorcerers as more of a race than a class. Just like how a tiefling is born with infernal traits or how an elf have pointy ears, a sorcerer has ancestral traits that molds them into capable spellcasters more unique than anyone else in variety and sheer power.

    Sorcerer has long been one of my two favorite classes (with Cleric) because of the variety in both play and lore.
    Lore-wise, you can have the source of your power be nearly anything. Yes, your grandma having _relations_ with a dragon is _one_ choice, but there are so many more. Remember back to Pointy Hat's video on Dragonborn and how he made people that were imbued by dragons? Just do that for a dragon sorc; or have your character be a dark experiment by a cult or secret government group where they unwillingly injected you with dragon blood / grafted dragon parts onto you in an effort to create a super caster.
    Or for some other sources, how about one of my characters? He started as a Cleric of Talos, and after impressing Talos enough with his actions, Talos saw fit to imbue him with a fraction of his stormy power, and thus my character went from just a Tempest Cleric to being a Tempest Cleric / Storm Sorcerer.
    Perhaps a spirit or otherworldly being (benevolent, malevolent, or neutral) is inhabiting your body, and takes over in times of stress or need. Perhaps a meteor shower destroyed your home village, one exploded as it struck your house, and a shard got stuck in your body. Perhaps you were transported to another plane at an early age, and had to adapt to survive in your new environ.
    It doesn't always have to be nepo, or main character syndrome.
    Sorcerer just means your magic is inherent, not learned. Your magic comes from a source outside your control / choice. It doesn't specifically only mean you're the next in a long line of ancestry casters.
    Motivations can include things like: finding out why your ancestor had that relationship, but also for the above: why did that cult / government group do those experiments, how far am I willing to go for the being that gave me some of their power, why is that spirit / being inhabiting your body and what ties them to you specifically / to the world, maybe you want to find a way to get rid of your powers because you were raised to think they are an aberration and you are not normal so you seek to remove that meteor shard from your body, or perhaps you want to reintegrate yourself into normal society after having grown up in another plane entirely.

    A nice flavor that is actually given as an example in the Player Handbook is that Draconic Sorcerers can recieve their powers through a pact or blessing with a dragon. Actually same with Fey and Demons, the PH says that the blessing of a Dryad or the touch of a Demon can spark wild magic sorcery.

    My first real dnd campagin, I played an aasimar celestial warlock. I thought the race and class went really well. Really liked it.
    Story line was that I was rasied not knowing my dad until a run in with a monster made my characther cry for help. My dad saves me, takes out the monster, but is saddened. In this world he's not allowed to interact with humans and was already being watched because he broke the rule before to have me.
    I was suppose to die because of that 2nd interaction. In a gamble my dad offers me the warlock contract to ensure I can be a benefit to his god and that being under the employ brings me into the fold of instead of being a mistake outside of the fold that needed to be removed.
    Very heavy Percy Jackson vibes if you haven't picked it up yet.
    My friend who was the DM and this was his first time doing a full campagin used my dad has a plot hook for the party. I was a monster/evil person hunter and that my dad was putting us on the path to stop a cult that was trying to bring a demon god into the world.
    We ended up dropping the campagin because it felt like it was too much on railroads and our dm felt like he had written himself into a corner (I don't blame him, it was his first time)
    I say all of this because this whole thing was "chosen one story" to the max looking back on it. I still love it and look back foundly on it, but I knew then and now that my other friends playing weren't in for a main story that didn't really connect at all to their backstorys and I get that.
    Guess what though, I wasn't a fucking sorcerer

    A sorcerer doesn't have to descend from a bloodline, e.g. what other characters did before the sorcerer was born. From the PHB 2014: "Some sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their own lives. The touch of a demon, the blessing of a dryad at a baby’s birth, or a taste of the water from a mysterious spring might spark the gift of sorcery. So too might the gift of a deity of magic, exposure to the elemental forces of the Inner Planes or the maddening chaos of Limbo, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality."
    These suggestions give a lot more than just a 'magic nepo baby', like why did this happen, how does the sorcerer feel about this, can the sorcerer control the magic, is the sorcerer in control of the power, is the sorcerer the same person as before or is the power speaking, does the sorcerer need to find a way to be one with the power? This gives the sorcerer also the motivation to explorer and find answers.
