At the 7:30 mark how is your "successional" growth suppose to start up with all of that HINGE CUT TREES putting shade on the ground?
I thought the idea was to get sunlight to the ground.
I agree that overhead cover is important, but I would leave just a FEW hinge cuts for browse, and then I would TREAT the rest of those hinge cuts with herbicide to kill the tree.
And of course I would stump cut most of what I want to root sprout for browsing.
Am I wrong in this thinking?

Trust me, winter and early spring is a much nicer time for this practice. It does work great though!

Most hunters start out the season thinking, should I get warmer gloves or boots. Didn't realize that I should looking at buying a bobcat or dozer.

Would an ash swale and regen aspen be considered a soft edge and would that be good areas to put the trails?

What would your goal being in hinging them? Not saying yes or no on doing it, just trying to see what you want to accomplish.

Trying to create more bedding area. My property is mixed young pines with hardwoods. Just hesitant to cut a money tree.

Understandable. Are there any openings that could be planted in NWSG? Or stands of hardwoods with little to no timber value that you could create a wildlife opening to promote bedding?

Never thought of planting NWSG that will be my next move. Recently, I've been slowing attempting to create some areas like this by hinge cutting. Thanks for the advice. As always, love your channel.

I recommend using a habitat hook when you are hinge cutting. It allows you to keep more of the hinge intact and gives a better survival rate. it is a well made product and one of my favorite tools I own. I love watching all habitat videos so keep up the work and can't wait to see some animal harvests this year.

You have to treat the stumps of that bush honeysuckle. It will vigorously sprout out of those cut off stumps causing more problems down the road. Treat the stumps immediately with glysophate.
