    Because I like and 'trust' Lynden I went off and learnt my major scales (well the ones on the rights hand side of the circle). And It has indeed been a game changer. For the first time I can look at a chord chart and make something approaching a reasonable attempt at playing along. I know another comment says 'just more scales' but for me the key thing was him saying 'start with major scales'.

    Brillant video Lynden. After 19 years of playing, I’ve come to the conclusion the major scales are the most important ones. If you don’t know the major scales, learning, memorising and understanding the minor, pentatonics, blues scales and modes and all the other music theory we need to know is sooo much harder. My first good sax teacher always said to me, the bad news about scales is you have to learn them, the good news is there is a definite number of them and it’s possible to learn them all.

    It's so true but hard work!! I'm trying to alternate between the clockwise #s and the anticlockwise b's on the circle of 5th's moving towards the bottom either side. My brain slowly implodes with the increasing number of accidentals but hopefully one day I'll nail it. Thanks for your enthusiastic advice. It's actually helping.

    100% agree. I play piano since I was 7 yo. I decided to start playing saxophone 10 months ago (august 2023). Fisrt month I decided to play all the major scales in all keys again and again. The month after, I added pentanotics on all 12 keys. Third month, my brain could tranform what I hear on the saxophone fingerings. Last week, I had my first gig and I was totally stressed. But because my fingers were trained to play those notes, finally that was fantastic (for a new player). My "sound" will need a lot of work but honestly, be able to give so pleasure to the spectators in a so short time was a super encouraging stuff. Thanks for all your videos ❤

    A really useful video, Lynden. I know you are absolutely right and I have been a brilliant procrastinator where it comes to learning the major scales. I get about three or four under my belt then get sidetracked learning a song and forget about the scales for weeks at a time. This video has given me the much needed kick up the derrière to get back to learning them all. Thank you!

    Hi Lynden. I come from a rock n roll background. My first instrument is the guitar. #2 is the harmonica. My preference style-wise is the blues. You can guess the built-in conflict: the "natural keys for the alto and tenor somewhat fights the usual guitaristic keys of Emaj and Amaj (open strings, etc). I have only begun the sax less than two years ago. I bought an an alto as well as a tenor, and obviously Eb, Bb, and Fmaj are easier for the sax. So many horn players slip happily into those keys...Cmaj too for the tenor. Anyway, I absolutely agree that learning scales in all keys is essential, especially if one expects to play with guitarists; I'm an old guy now, but I must learn all keys before going further. Cheers!

    I have a poor memory for note sequences and can only play sax at all because I visualise a bass guitar fingerboard while doing it. Telling me to learn exercises in all the keys is just sadism. What's more, knowing all your scales is pointless in some genres, like blues. If you're going to play blues, rocknroll and a lot of pop, 99% of the time you will need only concert A, E, G and maybe a little B, C and D. For tenor that's B, F#, A, C#, D and E; for alto that's F#,C#E, G#, A and B. That's 6 scales and keys, not 12. Mentioning this, even in passing, would be less excluding to us challenged players, perhaps.

    • @lyndenblades
      @lyndenblades  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@newscrews11 just do what you can, I think it’s a worthwhile goal to have your major scales in all keys if you can, and if not, then that’s fine too but it’s a good thing to aim for 🤝🤝🎷🎷😎😎

      I tend to agree with news on this because I think it all depends on what one is attempting to achieve with their instrument. If your goal is to perform paying gigs or play with other skilled musicians particularly guitar players, then I would say yes it pays to learn them all. However, if your goal is to just learn some songs and just have fun playing, then I would say that knowing a smaller core of scales will suffice. The blues scale and the pentatonics are a good start. G A B E and D major scales are also a great start, and there are tons of great songs in those keys. .Mark Archer is a good example of not having to know all 12 major scales to play great music. Like I said it all depends on what you are attempting to achieve with your instrument.
