Forties for me was a decade of confidence. I rarely wore make-up after a lifetime of struggling with acne. Fifties is another ball-game; Menopause rocked my world for a few years, then I came back to renewed glory. At 57, my make-up is basic; Wet-n-Wild tinted hydrator, Elf putty blush in Caribbean, Clinique Black Honey or Pink Honey for lips, taupe crease color and subtle pink shimmer for lid, brown tubing mascara, brown/navy/green shadow for liner on my small hooded brown eyes, also brow defining is a must.

I was thrilled to read you wear the Wet n Wild Tinted Hydrator. It is the only foundation type product I reach for anymore!! Although the lightest shade is still too dark for my skin tone, so I have to mix it with a white corrector. And, I also use eyeshadow to use as eyeliner!

I just turned 40 and I spent my twenties and thirties thinking too much about what other people thought about my makeup. That’s the biggest thing I’m leaving behind. However I feel or choose to wear my makeup is how I’m going to do it. Whether I want to go more “glam”, “natural”, “no makeup” “color” “nude” I’m doing it unapologetically. Side note I actually loved your black eyeliner looks , it really showcased your blue eyes but I suppose in person it would be more harsh. Thanks for the therapy tip.

In my late 60s. I didn’t listen then & I’ve changed my look in mid 40s & again in my earlier 60s. I gotta go where the lines & spots take me. Too deep to fill in so lighter makeup makes for a better look. Color on cheeks & lip makes a big difference. We’re all beautiful at every age. Embrace it!!!!!

I’m 52 and my skin is just too dry for powder foundations. I wish I realized this before I bought my MAC studio! We have similar colouring and I’ve stopped wearing black eyeliner too unless I tight line but even then I often use brown or grey.

Could the Mac product be mixed with a bit of emollient skin cream ? Considering the cost of the powder foundation, it might be worth a try just so it doesn't sit in a drawer unused then get tossed out. I'd scrape a bit onto a mixing palette and blend in some eye cream or Nivea....something along those lines.

True! Glitter migrates everywhere! In lip gloss (Pat McGrath's,) eyeshadow (Natasha's) and blush. It just gets everywhere it's not supposed to be. Shimmer is a different story, that's okay.

I’m glad that you didn’t include shimmer in with the glitter! ✨
Have you heard of a product called Duraline? If you mix some of those “glitter” in with this product? It glides across your eyelids like butter 🧈
It will not accentuate your fine lines… and there’s no chance that the glitter will migrate…anywhere❣️❤️

Mid 30s here! I’ve worn WAY less makeup now at this age. I’m focusing more on skincare and moisturizing. I make sure to use under eye cream and I feel like it is making a difference. I’ve also realized that I can’t just use any kind of makeup wipe because I’ve gotten eye infections because not all of the makeup was removed. Honest beauty wipes have been my new thing and it WORKS!

I left 40 behind in my rear-view mirror decades ago, and in the following years I have given up black eyeliner AND black mascara. I'm a green-eyed, white-haired old lady and those make me look like a fright. Unfortunately, it becomes harder to buy mascara when you don't want black, although I will say that Pacifica's "black" is actually a deep gray, and can work on a pale older person. Right now I'm using Burt's Bees mascara in black/brown. Anyway, another thing I gave up is foundation; I now use Pacifica's Kind Tint tinted serum. (This sounds like an ad for Pacifica, but is not). I never did like concealer and will never buy it again now that I have lots of little "texture" on my face. Another thing that has become a no-no, unless it's for an evening out, is red lipstick. It just sends my look from "ordinary weekday" to "grande dame" in .5 seconds. I have to settle for very natural lip colors now; Milani's "Pretty Natural" and "Roleplay" are working well.

  • @yikes7607

Yeah, sadly some products have to go for me as well.
Full coverage foundation too, because my skin has changed from oily to dry and heavy foundation makes me look like I'm cracking up like a dry desert XD
Highligher too, it seems out of place now given the dryness of the skin, so I only use it on the corners of my eyes and a dot on the tip and up on the bridge of my nose between the eyes. Maybe on my Cupid's bow.
The other thing I'm not feeling anymore is matte lipsticks, I'm just running away from anything that might emphasize dryness or the lines.
But there's one thing I didn't use before and now I feel it helps me look fresher, it's just a hint of concealer around the contour of my eyebrows because it kinda makes the whole face look more tidy and neat.

  • @rachelhastings1285
    @rachelhastings1285 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Heck yes! A friend once told me that skincare is the first step to makeup. I agree! After living in a desert for 7 years, I gave up on foundation and focused on skincare. I battled acne, acne scars, and sunspots. Now I'm in my 40s, and they're all gone.
Now I wear Covergirl's Clean Fresh Skin Milk. I add on a good cream blush, do my brows, pop on some shimmery eye shadow (Maybelline's nude glow is my favorite), and add on black mascara. I also have 2 kids so momma doesn't have a lot of time to dedicate to makeup. Plus, I want my girls to understand that makeup is to enhance not change the face. If someone can't appreciate your inner beauty, then they will not appreciate your outer beauty.

I turned 50 last summer & I have never used under eye concealer or bronzer. Fair skinned with auburn hair, I never thought bronzer complimented me. I am starting to get wrinkly under my eyes, so I'm not a fan of concealer either. I also use a tinted moisturizer on the daily. Black eyeliner has always been too harsh on me so I agree with you about the brown (or other more subtle) eyeliner. I have the same problem with black mascara and false eyelashes, so I wish brown mascara and false eyelashes were easier to find. I might use a bit of eyeshadow under my eyes, but I'm done putting eyeliner or mascara there -- I don't like waterproof eye makeup and the other kind runs too easily so I'd rather just skip it. I turned 51 last month and I completely gave up on under eye concealer about a decade ago. I have spent a small fortune over the years trying to find one that disguised my puffy eye bags but they all make me look far worse. I use minimal foundation now, and almost never wear lipstick because a touch of lip balm looks fine. I do love my slightly grunge eye make up, even though my aging hooded eyes can't do winged liner any longer, but I have just adapted my application to work around that. That said I probably stay bare faced at least half of the week now 😊

I've always had thinner lips - which are just going to get thinner as I get older - & glosses or stuff that has a glossy sheen to them is what I think I'm going to stick with from now on. Most people don't have the level of contrast and, most importantly, brightness in their skin that can support black eyeliner. I'm Brazilian, I'm young, tan skin, super dark hair, I surely don't lack contrast, and still, I really do look garish with black eyeliner. Because my skin tone lacks intensity, gray looks so much more harmonious. I've also never been able to wear foundation, I just mix a tiny bit of concealer with moisturizer and primer and it looks so smooth and natural, I feel like the vast majority of foundations just make the skin look older in person, even if you're just 17. And I really must say, that lip colour looks so, so gorgeous on you!

For me with black it's the other way around. I got professionally draped, in person, and discovered I'm a bright winter, and not a warm season like I believed for a long time, and actually adding black, in artful ways, combined with shiny and bright colors has really helped me look better! However, I'm with you 100% on the full coverage! I tried when I was young, as I had terrible acne, but it always felt horrible on my skin. And, being an athlete, often working out 2.5 hours a day, full coverage really doesn't feel great when you're sweating your face off! I often don't even wear BB or CC cream. I will use primer and a corrector, but other than that, just a translucent powder for coverage, to prevent the shine where I don't intend to shine.

I am so with you on this video🤦🏽‍♀️…I used to be obsessed with makeup…all the new and beautiful…the more the better. I believe my overload of purchasing literally established retirement funds for Bergdorf/Ulta/Saks Beauty Consultants back in NYC😁. Last year when I turned 65, I sold my house, moved from NYC (after 28 years) and downsized to a one story Condominium in the South. During that packing process, I must’ve declutterred over $2500 in makeup and skincare that I decided simply was too cumbersome at this point. I kept the essentials and it allows me to discover more minimalist products. My skin has never felt more “alive and free.”

I’m 58 and I can’t really say I’ve changed my makeup routine much in the last few years. I still love a full face of makeup!! I’ve come to realize that certain products may not look as good as they did in my younger years but I still use them! My obsession with makeup stems from loving it so very much growing up but not being able to afford it. I clearly remember having a hand me down bottle of the Covergirl foundation that smelled like Noxema, mostly empty, and filling it up with Jergens lotion to make it last!!! ❤❤❤

I still use full coverage foundation because my skin is still so blotchy. 🙄 And at 56, I am still acne and breakout prone. For gosh sake's! 😂
A medium lip is really important. That lipless look is not flattering.
I have always gone easy on eyeshadow, since I have always had down turned, hooded eyes and glasses. A little fixing spray on the brush works wonders!
I'm very cautious about highlights these days as texture is an issue. And lining the lips has become a must! Dark brown liner and mascara has always been my go to.
I'm enjoying cream blush more than ever, and super duper *fine powder is a must. Currently loving WnW Photo focus, and saving up to splurge on the G Prisme.
Other newish must have is a lip mask.

I just turned 55, and I only use black eyeliner right under my lashes to help make my lashes look a little fuller. I will use navy, plum, brown, gray, or a dark shadow to line right above my lashes. I have never liked full coverage foundations. Light to medium is good for me, or a good CC tint makes me happy.

Yes, I am only entering my 30s but I highly resonate with the foundation thing. With the rise of skincare knowledge and increasing availability and effectiveness of skincare nowadays, I find many of us are regaining the confidence to show our skin and use lighter makeup, at least for daily use.
I have struggled severely, on an emotional and confidence level because of teenage acne, it wasn't as bad as others, but it still left me in a bad emotional state when going out and with my knowledge and dedication to skin-care I am more confident than ever to leave the full-coverage for special occasions only!
16yr old me would be so happy and relieved to know I finally got to a place where my skin is actually good and I'm confident about it just 10 years later. I know I always doubted I'd ever get to where I am today.

Yes, I agree with nearly everything you listed. I’m 50. I can’t wear heavy foundation anymore, I now gravitate towards very light ones that unifies my skin tone. I haven’t ware blank eyeliners in years. Shimmer eyeshadow ONLY in my mobile eyelid otherwise I look ten year older. I don’t wear fake eyelashes. I have only do so a couple of time for big occasions, I prefer to wear only my mascara. I love my lipsticks with colour in them, I feel that they give me life. It was even the only make up product Queen Elizabeth wore in her older years. So, I’m more or less with you in this. Big hugs to you xx

I totally agree with your foundation approach. I didn't want to toss a couple high-end products that make my skin look beautiful so now I dilute them with a drop of squalene and apply less. Can't stop using shimmer shadows so I place it strategically as a thick eyeliner over a well-matched matte. Seems toned down but I still have a bit of sparkle. Good video subject. Thank you!😊

First of all, I am a licensed professional counselor in Texas, so I appreciate your being so open about therapy. One thing I’ve told so many people I can’t even count is “Nobody gets through this life alone, and nobody gets through this life unscathed.” It’s just a fact. And I say that hoping to help my clients get over the stigma of going to therapy. So thank you!
I just turned 53, but in some ways I feel like I’m still in my 30s. I’ve noticed that all makeup feels a lot heavier as well. Most of the time, I just put on concealer where I need it and then put powder over it. Skin care truly is the most important thing. If you take care of your skin, you can more easily get away with just using concealer (peach under my eyes and Fit Me for spots on the rest of my face). Eye make up, and particularly mascara tends to make my eyes water. It’s just something I have to deal with because I haven’t found a solution. I’m with you with the eyeliner. My eyes are green, so I actually use a more copper colored liner, but I do brown as well. I’ll have to try the grey! Lipstick is my biggest adversary. As I’ve gotten older, my teeth are just getting more yellow. It’s so hard to find something that doesn’t bring out the yellow. And it irritates me.😂 So that’s my 2 cents, for whatever it’s worth.

So glad you’re at a happy point in your life. Therapy is very helpful. I enjoy your videos a lot even though our ages, skin color and type couldn’t be further apart. Judging by the comments you have quite a few followers in my age group. I’n 78 and my lifelong oily and acne prone skin has turned a lot dryer in the last few years. I mostly use med. coverage foundation with a satin finish for dry/ combo skin. If I apply with a sponge I can get lighter coverage if needed. Dewy or moisturizing foundations/tints over my skin care products really emphasize my texture and the wrinkles around my eyes and my mouth. I look like death warmed over without blush and a colorful lipstick. Matte lipsticks are definitely out. I gave up on contouring except for my nose but I do use bronzer on occasion. Glitter anywhere is out although I might add a touch of a shimmery (no glitter specks) eyeshadow to a small area of my eyelids. Gravity has taken big effect on the skin above my eyelid crease. It’s puffy and droopy at the same time. I’ve found that putting a neutral medium shade eyeshadow on that area makes the puffiness seem to recede and evens out the look of my eye socket. Winged eyeliner is also a thing of the past due to wrinkles. I use a brown waterproof eyeliner (Milani is fool-proof) for my upper lids. I use it for tightlining as well. My big challenge is finding a mascara that lengthens and volumizes yet keeps my eyelash-curled lashes from drooping. I bought several modest false eyelashes from Ardelle & Kiss but need to practice putting them on. Better eyesight & dexterity would definitely help.

  • @HerGreyness
    @HerGreyness 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

…I love black eyeliner. I have done wings since I was 18, I love blush, I have never worn thick foundation, or big eyelashes. I think when I started wearing full makeup I made a point of not over dramatizing my makeup. I love nude lips- mostly soft mattes are my favorites. I started skincare at 15, sunblock at 17 (moles on face) and clean skin regimen. Basically all my changes have been in skincare. Not many wrinkles - yet. But I am now 72. And I won’t give up my makeup…ever. It makes me feel happy and better about myself. I don’t believe setting up age divisions for what I can or can’t wear on my face. And yes, blazing red lipsticks are my favorites 😂

I agree about the foundation. I’m now using more SPF tints and then just some coverage where I need it (usually I’m not doing all over foundation and definitely not full coverage). I find dark lipsticks make my lips look smaller, and most lipsticks in general are too thick and drying. I love tinted balms (like the ones from Fresh, YSL and Burt’s Bees).

I’m 76 with white hair, but brows and lashes are still dark brown. I still use black liner and mascara, but the liner is a much thinner line -usually tight lining. Still like a shimmer on the lids, but don’t use highlighter on the cheek bones. Foundation depends on the occasion, weather and need for longevity. I don’t use concealer as I’ve never found one that concealed the dark circles that didn’t emphasize the puffiness.

I’m in my late 40’s. I was never big on foundation, but wore it because that was what my friends were wearing. I’m pretty pale so shade matching was also difficult. In the last 10 years, I either wear tinted moisturizer, bb creams, etc. or I go without anything. I also never used black eyeliner really. Every time I wore it, it looked harsh. I have been using the brown eyeshadow sticks from ELF and I like how they look on my crepey eyes. Also, because of that, I don’t use glitter eyeshadow or shimmer eyeshadow anymore. I tried every eyeshadow primer and it ended up creasing or transferring.

I'm 56 and I can't agree more, Z! I'm all about quick and easy, well groomed natural look these days, something that is forgiving and that looks great close up in daylight. It's true - older we get, less is truly more. I keep it simple and basic. Sin care is essential. Then, light, sheer skin-like serums or BB/CC creams to even out skin tone, moisturizing concealer under eyes, creamy textures for cheeks, lips and even eyes, no lip liner, more of a color stain, bitten lip look, fresh blusher, often lipstick doubles as a blusher, what goes on the cheeks or lips usually goes on eyelids too - touch of blusher or a lipstick. No shadows, unless I go for smoky eye. And no pale nude lipsticks. Fresh color on the lips, with certain saturation level, gives well rested, fresh and youthful look to the face. I don't contour, I don't do harsh eyebrows or eyeliner. Taupe, brown, bronze, grey, navy-grey look great. Berry tones for lips and cheeks, or healthy pinks and peaches. No long wear matte foundations, no baking, no setting powders. No powders, unless it's a bronzer and that in very small amount as monochromatic one and done look (cheeks, eyelids).
What become a must for me at this stage of my life: Natural looking lashes - lash perm (lift) and dying helps a lot and looks way better than extensions on aging eyes. Make sure you find really good technician. It's essential. Helps a lot with looking put together around the clock without mascara, especially if you have sensitive eyes or can't deal with it during the day (humidity, lifestyle, etc.). XOXO

One thing I can't do is bronzer. No matter how subtle or cool toned, it always looks ridiculous in me. It really looks powdery, too. I might try a cream some time, but I've kind of given up. My skin was stupidly sensitive before, but now...lordy, just about anything sets it off. So most days, the only products I use are skincare and sunscreen. On the rare occasion I wear makeup, it's a light application of tinted moisturizer, any major spots covered by concealer, a little bit of blush, tinted lip balm, and tubing mascara (the kind you have to remove with warm water specifically).
