Dohnányi was a fascinating musician, and it is a great pleasure to hear some of his earlier work on a gramophone record as a conductor.
Berlioz was one of those unmistakable composers, who wrote indelible music. Once heard never forgotten. The Rakoczy March is just one of so many examples, and I reckon Dohnányi certainly understood the swagger in it!
I love the playing as well. So crisp and with sharp rhythms and beautifully together.
Sometimes it is really useful to remind ourselves that the fine ensembles we expect from the 1950s onwards nowadays, certainly were not the first really top flight orchestras to be encountered in earlier times. Contemporary criticism could only give a vague idea of the actual playing quality we encounter in this old recording!
    Best wishes from George

@georgejohnson1498 Thanks George. Yes, this is really rather fine! It's very interesting to compare this performance with one I found today in a pile of odds and ends that I had forgotten about. I'll upload this second version soon: a very different conception!

@@vintagesounds3878 I do enjoy comparing different performances. Sometimes I prefer one, and even if they are quite different, sometime I like both more or less equally!
      Best wishes from George
