Great job Todd, do not worry about the keyboard warriors. The vast majority of us that tune in appreciate what you do for the community. I really don't understand why people would buy an RV without the most basic of skills to follow your clear simple recommendations. If i waste time it takes 20 minutes to winterize my RV and when I sanitize in the spring i spend 10 minutes to load 66gal of water and 1.2 cups of bleach, the next afternoon I drain and rinse. Love this series!
Sweetie, take as long as you feel you need to explain your subject. Those who have been there and done that dont really need to be here watching and should STHU for those of us that want to learn. We appreciate these tips. More importantly we appreciate you. Thank you.😊
You’re doing great Todd there is no way you’re going to please everyone. There’s always gonna be someone that thinks negative. Don’t worry about them. Keep doing what you’re doing. I really appreciate your information. It’s helpful.
Thank you Todd for the videos you make. They are very informative and enjoyable. Never worry about the time it takes for you to produce a video on the subject at hand. Short cuts rarely work well in the long run. Thanks again.
Thanks for the info. I've been using bleach at your recommended concentration forever during sanitizing every six months. The only thing I really hate about this process is just *DUMPING* 50 gallons of water out -- I live in California and with all our droughts, we're conditioned to conserve water.
I love these videos! As a new RV owner I find these to be really helpful. I am very interested in coming to take the Fundamentals class in person. Although it's a long drive from North Carolina, I think face to face time in class would be much more fun. I think Todd is really funny so it would be worth the trip.
Todd, I’ve been RVing for quite a few years and I’ve been doing these things you teach for many years. I am a subscriber and I may learn something. I appreciate your tips. Thanks!
Chlorine dioxide is the best thing, not bleach! You can make it by mixing sodium chlorite and hydrochloric acid. It's seriously much better than hydrogen peroxide and bleach. Not toxic if consumed in small amounts, and it's actually used industrially for sanitizing water, produce and meats. Hope this helps someone. Thanks for the tips in this video!
You are hilarious. I was thinking of changing to Potassium Permanganate instead of bleach, only because a little goes a long way and used it in the jungles when I was in the military, still undecided but with a grin on my face I bid farewell your holiness.
"Holding tank" or "fresh water tank"? "Holding" is typically associated with grey or black water tanks and it certainly peaked my interest when I thought you were about to suggest sanitizing the grey or black holding tanks. Regardless, very timely tip and much appreciated. I was just looking for NRVTA's recommendations for sanitization.
Such a simple process that I do every 6 months (I live in Florida and never winterize!). I've never put the water heater tank in Bypass though, oops! Is that really bad?
Thank you for the information. I just sanitized my water tank on a Renegade Vienna RV, however in the process the tank never filled beyond 33%. Can a faulty water pressure regulator impede the flow of water into the tank, or could there be another cause. I'll look forward to seeing your answer. Thank you.
Perhaps your tank level readout is faulty and fails to show levels above 33%. Does it read to 100% when you fill with fresh water? BTW, I just googled "Renegade Vienna RV" and it looks like a nice coach!
@@dougclark6696 The RV is in the shop now to evaluate the sensors and the electronics of the display panel, including low water pressure without the pump in use.. Yes, we have enjoyed the Renegade. Thanks for your response.
Hey Todd, Super Awesome videos… all of them! Is there any reason we couldn’t use Iodophor (iodine based sanitizer) instead of bleach? I used to use this to sanitize my kegerator system. Seems like you could also run this through the water heater too since it isn’t as caustic as bleach. Thanks again for your videos and wealth of knowledge.
Todd ur so crazy. Lol.. u always bust me up. I'm actually looking forward to getting into ur school this coming year. Hopefully I'll get to be RV repair tech. Sounds so awesome. Thanks. 👊😊
Not busting your chops here, but a real question. We just purchased a rig with an Aqua Hot 450 furnace/water heater. What is the protocol for winterizing and sanitizing that type of water heater? Do we run the pink stuff through it? Do we have to turn it off when winterizing? Do we run chlorine mix through it? I appreciate your input.
Hi Todd, great videos! We have a towable that don’t move and we use it at least a couple of times per month. The water tank is empty. Two questions… should we keep the tank full or empty and how often would you recommend to sanitize the system? Thank you!
They sell these big water bladders that you can rest on the rear of a trucks bed. Take it and fill it up with water and it can be use to fill your RV fresh water take.
The answer is “it depends…” Downside of sanitizing before every trip: cost of the bleach and the time and effort to do it, plus a trivial amount of water used; there is no meaningful wear and tear on the plumbing or anything like that. Upside of sanitizing before every trip: even less likely to get sick from microbial infestation. BUT it’s pretty unlikely that your water system would pick up any contamination or have significant bacterial growth in just 2 or 3 months of sitting, so you are making the effort to reduce a very small risk to be a nearly zero risk.
Thanks for the reply, I kind of figured it was over kill, but makes my wife feel better, even though we don't drink the water , shower , outside sprayer and toilets...we have not been boondocks yet but its on our list of things to do....
Found the valves to bypass water heater! But I hope some of the bleach water that may have got in doesn’t harm the water heater!! It was only a little bit of bleach water before I turned the valves off to the heater. Geez
Question: at 3:14 you mentioned white vinegar, which I happen to have in the kitchen already, so I’m thinking of using that instead of hydrogen peroxide or bleach. Is the ratio the same for vinegar as for hydrogen peroxide?
@@luminousveiws oh, ok. I’ve never had to descale a water heater, I didn’t realize that vinegar was used for that. (Makes sense, use vinegar to clean coffee makers, which are just water heaters with an extra step)
Todd, I have a water filter that filters ALL water coming into my RV regardless of whether I am filling the fresh water tank or using water direct. My question is should I remove the filter element before disinfecting? I have heard it is not good to pass the bleach solution through the filter with the cartridge installed Thanks
And yes, I have my "You forgot about...". If you routinely run chlorinated city water (strong enough that you can smell the chlorine) through your RV's water system, you probably don't ever need to sanitize it.
I do every year. Even though my antifreeze also is a sanitizer. But my tank does not have the antifreeze. So I have to sanitize. I have a Truma. So I can't sanitize it like other systems.
Keyboard warrior here. Todd, you forgot that a lot of appreciate these tips you put out there every day. Please don’t stop. Thanks.

Worlds best videos Todd; I have a tankless water heater on demand. So it's not cool to run bleach thru the WH when sanitizing? will it harm the WH?
We need the tankless info now in the north. We can't wait until spring...

Thank you so much, Todd. Great info. Not sure if you can use your water pump vs. filling in the hose with bleach.
Yes!
Thanks

Do you rinse the tank? Fill the tank again and drain?

Does really matter
Does it hurt water heater

So if I mess up and don’t bypass my tankless water heater, will the bleach water hurt it or not? I don’t think I caught exactly what you said.
Are we not supposed to get bleach water in the hot water tank? I'm not winterizing, so wasn't too clear about that. Thanks.
If your on a seasonal site with no city water only limited well water what’s the best process. Trailer never moves so no option to bring home .

Yes, I noticed this too. Was it a slip-of-the-tongue, or are vinegar and H2O2 actually in interchangeable?
Vinegar is for descaling the water heater.
You may have noticed Todd frequently swaps words around. That's what makes the bloopers fun!

The idea of putting the bleach in the hose is a great one. Thank you
Sanitizing your fresh water hose periodically is a good idea too.

Vinegar is acetic acid not H2O2

1/4 cup for 15 gallons is one cup per 60 gallons, not 50.
Close enough
