    1- Correction on the latency graphs. Should say microseconds, not milliseconds. ;) Thanks "the Reverant" for pointing this out!
    2- Check out my 15 Gen4 SSD Roundup for some more info: th-cam.com/video/Zy2HtI20eFQ/w-d-xo.html
    3- Markings on my sample are as follows:
    *Controller:*
    Sandisk
    02-1008T-A1
    14872XFD3S5
    China
    *Memory:*
    Sandisk
    001987 1T00
    China
    14620CEKX00W
    Keep in mind that just because markings change it doesn't mean you're being cheated. But it's good to keep an eye out for major revisions under the same product name!

      Hello
      I testet 2 of the 1tb modells in a hp zbook fury 15 g8. I also teste 2 of the sn850 2tb in this mobile workstation. After round an hour the sn770 was still cool by araound 85c°. The sn850 was by over 95c° and throttled. So after round abaout an hour of heavy use the sn770 had a better performance. Before anyone asks I use 2 drives because so i can use raid 1 to get a datamirror.

      You're just too professional. You are certainly an agent of WD. Ok, well... Your commercial is for gamerboys. Now tell me as a non-gamer, as a Dell Optiplex user, what is better about the WD red SA700. PCie 3 is OK, .. my Dell also has a PCi 3 .. So why do I, as a quality-conscious Dell user, have to buy the WD 700. What is the difference? ..so to speak the secret of the high TBW performance?

    I was an avid Samsung fan since my first SSD, Samsung 830. Then bought 840, 850, 860 and afterwards went on NVME 970 EVO Plus and 980 Pro. My SATA drives still work perfectly, although I don't use them anymore. However, all my NVME went broke in less than a year and one in less than 6 months. Now I got the Western Digital SN 770 Gen 4 1TB and Crucial P3 Gen 4 1TB. I'm extremely happy with both. Heavy gaming, countless times reinstalled Windows 10 and 11 and thus far, zero problems. Let alone they're much cheaper, too. I got each for 44€ and 46€ respectively, only.

    Something that no online testers seem to cover is use of M.2 drives in external enclosures. (I know there are many ready-made USB 3 devices but I like the dual use possibilities.) Consistency should be less of a factor, SLC cache performance might or might not be, power draw and thermal performance probably would be. I know the variables are numerous because of the plethora of enclosures out there, but ...
    Please think about doing such a test; you'd have almost no competition with regard to viewers since this use case seems to be universally ignored.

      Thanks for the feedback! Some time back, NVMe based USB 3.2 gen 2 drives were very reasonably priced on Amazon. I bought a number of them for both myself and family members. I have an SN770 and it works great in my computer. I'd not yet tried it in an external enclosure. The lack of a DRAM cache had worried me. It's nice to know that the SN770 doesn't fall flat in an enclosure.

    Thanks for the early review as I only even learned about this SSD through tech site press releases today! One thing I would like to see added to your testing, if possible, is something which specifically benchmarks 4k random performance (even something simple like Crystal Disk Mark). While most modern SSDs do seem to be limited by NAND more than anything else in these tests it can still be an important variable for use case.
    Assuming nothing changes with the hardware of the drives this sounds like it could be really good as a secondary drive for games etc. I currently use a pair of 1tb SATA SSDs for most of my games and all local storage with my OS and select games being on my NVMe drive.

  • @KryssN1
    @KryssN1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    So regarding using it for consoles, I don't recommend it as PS5 at least, most probably XsX also don't support HMB, which is crucial in performance consistency metrics over time.
    HMB in essence uses PC RAM as Cache instead of the NVME drive needing DRAM cache on it's own.
    The consequences of that is when the buffer overloads at above 337GB of transfer, your Sequential Speed plumets from 5000 Mb/s down to 500 Mb/s, still faster than SATA but a lot slower than nvme drives with dedicated DRAM cache on board like WD SN850 or Samsung 980 Pro, which after 5-10 minutes of Sequential Writes still continue at over 1.5Mb/s.
    So basically when transfering ton of games from PS5 integrated storage to Nvme drive it will take you 1/3 the time or at worse half the time when compared to storage without DRAM like SN770.

    • @Neosin1
      @Neosin1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You realise, about 1/100 people will transfer more than 337 gigs of games at once? And you only need to do it once! Once the games are on the drive it's all READS

    • @KryssN1
      @KryssN1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Neosin1
      Yeah that is still 66% faster, if you transfer 700gb or 7 games.
      So you realise, this information is important depending on the price difference.
      That can be a big difference of couple hours faster.
      Even with 1 game that can be done a lot faster.
      Basically in most of EU SN770 cost almost as much as SN850, so obviously SN850 would be a better choice.
      Just this week SN850 1TB was going for 94EUR and 2TB for 180EUR.
      While SN770 was going for only couple EUR cheaper.

      @@KryssN1 You are totally right and im so happy to see someone else make a point of it. The SN 750 used Dram. It was the same price. Now, this NEW 770 is a standard garbage d-ram less drive, and shouldn't be considered for any reason. There ARE options as the same price with d ram, so there is no selling point, its just a bad drive. Such a shame considering the SN 750 was my go to recommendation for a drive.

    Basically WD’s flash array architecture is better than anyone else, it’s called BICS 5 here, was BICS 4 for the SN850 and with less NAND layers it beats B47R or Samsung’s V-NAND easily

  • @CognizantCheddar
    @CognizantCheddar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The sn770 has the newest WD nvme flash, BiCS5. The sn850 is using BiCS4.
    This is probably at least part of the reason for the sn770's shocking real-world performance and latency with only four channels.
    For this reason, at this time I think people should put off buying the sn850 at its current pricepoint, because it may soon be leapfrogged by an upgraded version with BiCS5, which will blow away the current sn850 if the performance jump from sn750 to sn770 is any indication.

    • @SteelSkin667
      @SteelSkin667 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewlewis5251 It really depends, as the downsides of DRAM-less drives are much less with NVMe drives than with SATA or AHCI drives. That is of course as long as your system supports HMB, which is the case of Windows and Linux.
      Most low- and mid-range NVMe drives on the market are DRAM-less, and if you are buying a 2230 M.2 SSD to put in a laptop or Steam Deck it is pretty much guaranteed to be DRAM-less as well - as are the ones that come in the Steam Deck by defaut for that matter.
