Those who do not know me - cannot understand what I teach! Everything is just my magic! "The whole Prabanjas and everything including (me)" is only my knowledge, thought, imagination and flow: ! Thanks !
Isn't "Don't you answer back?" the negative of "Do you answer back?" At schools, our teachers used to ask us when we were inattentive, "Don't you understand?". 2) Use of question tags exemplified by you caught my attention; you may review it based on the grammar rules that a negative sentence has positive tag, and a positive has a negative tag as in, Write it down, won't you? Don repeat it, will you?
Good questions!! Thanks for giving me a chance to explain these points. There is some difference between "Don't you answer back?" and "Don't you answer back". The first one is a question (Yes/no question to be precise) whereas the second is an imperative sentence (with the subject YOU mentioned to add more emphasis). So the teachers were right when they asked “Don’t you understand?”; and when someone says “Don’t you answer back”, they are equally right. As we all know, normally, a positive statement takes a negative question tag and vice versa. But when it comes to the imperatives, it’s different. A positive imperative sentence can have will you? / won’t you? / can you? / can’t you? / would you? as tag questions (depending on the context). But with negative imperatives, only ‘will you?’ is possible. “Write it down, will you?” (This sounds less polite) “Write it down, won’t you?” (Here, there is a slight suggestion that one might be expecting the answer to be ‘no’.) But both the question tags are possible.
Really, are you an English teacher? If so,the students are very lucky to have a teacher like you!!
Yes, I am. 😊🙏🏼
