    If they would've;
    1. Filled the sky more.
    2. Filled the deep more.
    3. Make the story not feel so "half assed" and make more sense.
    4. Put in similar dlc aka the trials.
    5. Put out a couple more amiibos of like the robots or something.
    6. Not make everything feel so grindy.
    7. Make Link more recognized as the hero from botw.
    (Just my opinion.) I got burned out too fast from this vs the 1st game. Still fun though! 😊

    Honestly, this video doesn't really challenge the aspects of this game that make it feel like a bad sequel. It covers some of the stuff that people use to argue it's a bad game, but not so much a bad sequel. Here are some examples of things that make it a bad sequel:
    1) The story is a scaled up remix of BotW's basic story; replacing 100 year old champions with 10k year old sages, replacing the failed old king roam with failed king Rauru, replacing ancient Shieka tech with ancient zonai tech, replacing malice with gloom, replacing the war against ganon with the imprisoning war against ganondorf, and the only real change in recurring themes is they added a 5th sage and Zelda is missing instead of locked in a known location. They basically reused all the same elements, and then don't acknowledge anywhere how similar the events are.
    2) They don't even acknowledge that the rock shrines without doors are somehow similar to the shieka shrines that had doors. The fact that they call both shrines when they are so visually distinct is off-putting. Yet they never make any associations between this event and what happened in BotW.
    3) the majority of the rewards are the same
    4) many NPCs don't recognize Link despite him interacting with them in the original. This is something that the Gameboy Color Oracle games get right, and those were designed so you could play either game first and they'll still make reference to what you did in the first with the password system.
    5) Most "fixes" are really bandages. Like weapon fusing doesn't fix weapon durability. If anything, it was made to make up for players getting stuck or having to backtrack from places cause they didn't have the right type of weapon, like needing hammers or torches. That's now a fusion away. Octorocks sucking up and spitting out weapons is more of a fix for durability than fusion. And it's annoying cause even the fanfic, alternative timeline "prequel" that was Age of Calamity introduced the one things fans wanted to deal with durability issues: A Blacksmith. For high cost and resources, you can fully repair a damaged weapon, or maybe he could build any weapon you showed him as you went through the story, again, for a high cost. That would've alleviated the issue many people still have with durability
    7) Game balance feels even worse from a defensive perspective, as even the upgrade from base armor to a full set with 1 level of upgrade has a tremendous effect on the damage you take. This game can very quickly go from taking what feels like almost unfair damage to taking barely any, and the bullshit "fix" they put in for this poor balance is to have your last 1/4 heart not dissipate when taking a hit from full health, making the majority of the game best played without any health upgrades at all, because you'll still survive and only need to heal 4 hearts instead of however many you have more than that.
    8) some areas of the map were clearly designed with guardians in mind and they feel empty and without personality or anything interesting without them.
    9) Yes, ultrahand makes the loop very different. But if you don't like ultrahand, the game loop is largely the same and only superficially different, with a bit larger scope and somewhat different other powers.
    This isn't getting into things that make the game worse, like having to fuse bows every single time you want to use anything other than a standard arrow.
    The other thing to note about Zelda sequels: what you said about Majora's does not apply to TotK. Majora's had Link in a completely different world. And it still made necessary references. Link traveling through the lost woods to find Navi, memories of Zelda from Ocarina, Epona, these slight nods all give all the necessary context for a sequel. TotK has a lot more work to do because it is the same world, everyone should more or less know what happened or rumors about what happened at the very least. But the game almost goes out of its way to write off BotW, and that hurts both games. It makes BotW feel insignificant in comparison while also failing to totally satisfy because it feels like what's the point when your adventures, your legend, will just be forgotten. The devs chose this challenge by reusing the same world and making the games have maybe a few years difference, timeline-wise. They didn't deliver in many ways. It's just too tall of an order when they clearly just wanted to make an interactive physics sandbox

    1:00 but the depths are the laziest shit I've ever seen from Nintendo. They just flipped Hyrule upside down, or inversed the height map of everything. Not sure what the technical term for it is. There was way more new content in the sky... which wasn't much. In a vacuum, meaning if botw was never a thing, totk might be the greatest game ever made. Buuuttt it's really just botw 1.5. You're conflating people saying it's 1.5 with people saying it's just dlc. They are not the same thing. It clearly is not just dlc. But it clearly is botw 1.5.

    I played BOTW for the first time last year and TOTK this year. Having played both fresh and very recently I found TOTK to be much more enjoyable. About 50% of the time I played BOTW I felt bored and I literally had to force myself to play to get through it. The land felt very empty and the game didn't really make good use of all the space it created. I never had this feeling with TOTK. It's like I couldn't' put TOTK down. It gave me that addicted feeling because there was always a feeling of lots of quests that I wanted to progress in. Also, the Temples and bosses in TOTK and were much better than the Divine Beasts. I also loved some of the vehicles I developed and collecting a lot of batteries allowed me to use them extensively to get around which was so fun. So TOTK >>> BOTW for me.

      I’m in a similar boat as you. Though I find the vastness of BotW does offer a unique feeling that I kinda like? The emptiness lends a sense of wilderness that can enhance the experience.
      Though I do find TotK better in almost every way, I think you run into so many random events on the map with much more frequency. And I freaking love the dungeon design in this game, how they used the landscape and made the dungeons integrated with the lands this time around.

    Ya know when i first heard about totk i was like "oh it's dlc that's cool" it wasn't until later i realized it wasn't, i had bought BOTW about a month ago played the heck outta it passed it and was like i gotta play TOTK and i am far more in love with TOTK than BOTW, Breath was very tedious, and frustrating especially to get around you have 3 options, 1)ride a horse 2) fast travel to a shrine or tower, or(this one requires dlc) 3) motorcycle(you can only get it after saving the 4 divine beasts, instead of before when it'd be super useful). I enjoyed TOTK a lot more, making things fuse together and making weird vehicles or traps in love it.

      It's opposite for me. Tears of the Kingdom felt terribly tedious and repetitive. It clutters out side content with amiibo junk. Tears isn't DLC, but it definitely spends most of its time feeling like a remix that didn't fully grasp what made the original great. Like, yes, it made a lot of improvements, but it also made some baffling choices that hindered or diminished the gameplay loop. I never feel like I'm outsmarting the game by using ultrahand to make something crazy. It's supposed to do that. Using stasis to turn a rock into a rocket, now that feels like breaking the game in the best way. There's something so satisfying about doing something that takes 30 seconds at most to test a "what if" that is just lost in the actual science of ultrahand.
    Best version of either of these games would be BotW with ascend and fuse back ported, caves backported, and ganon taking his ganondorf form for the final battle after you shoot the pig. Let fused arrows store alongside your various arrow types from BotW and add in in-menu bulk fusing/cooking options. The tears dungeon buildup sequences cam also be back ported, and some of the aesthetics from the dungeons can be back ported, or just bring the dungeons back with the Divine Beasts, but they're honestly not anything special, so that doesn't really matter much. Still wouldn't be my ideal Zelda game, but it'd at least have the best from both of these entries. Now playing either feels like something is missing or incomplete for me

  • @howabtjoe8
    @howabtjoe8 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    I just wholeheartedly disagree with everything you’re saying. The dungeons are in no way a return to traditional Zelda. They are essentially divine beasts that aesthetically look more like traditional dungeons. I also feel like the depths and the sky islands are not substantial enough to justify their existence. The sky islands are sparse and repetitive, the depths are just as repetitive, but also overwhelmingly monotonous despite its scale. There were several changes on the surface that were fun, but I had traversed this map for 6 years prior, and consumed online content like this about every little thoughtfully detail planted into the environment. A LOT of the surface map is unchanged. And a lot of the elements in the game felt like reskinned husks of BotW’s key elements. The entire adventure of going to the four regions to get the same four champions to help you felt almost comically derivative of BotW. If they really wanted to transform the map the story could have been written a lot different to make the temples feel less homogenized and connected to one ancient race (kind of like BotW) they could’ve use this game as an opportunity to explore how different cultures would create temples in this world. The game has the appearance of this happening, but the temples are only aesthetically unique, they are only full of zonai puzzles, technology, and enemies. This game feels like a step backward, like they took the complaints of BotW and doubled-down on them in many ways. I think they wanted new players to the series to not feel alienated for not playing BotW, so they just made BotW again. I had a lot of fun playing this game despite all this. Nintendo puts gameplay first and it shows here cause I enjoyed playing it. But I don’t think it’s a good sequel to BotW and I don’t think it’s a good Zelda game.

    • @bitsoftimemedia
      @bitsoftimemedia  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well looks like we are on opposite sides of this one, but I can respect your opinion on it. I see these dungeons as more elaborate and sprawling using the actual landscape and lead up to the dungeons as part of it which I found exciting and different.
      But hey at the end there you said you still had fun playing it and that’s what’s most important. I think it’s still a good Zelda game even if you don’t but I’m happy you at least found it fun. To me, it was worth your time then.

    my primary problem with the game is they made a vast world to explore in breath of the wild and did almost nothing to encourage exploration in it as the reward system was just subpar and many locations were lackluster in what they had to bring to the table, even when it came to established locations. for example, the ancient temple with the hylia statue in it. like, that area was so cool and could have been a whole dungeon but instead in totk all they did was just throw in some monster camps and like one quest and called it a day. they did this with countless other locations on the map, dragon head island being another great example. also, from a game design perspective, the depths and the sky islands don't have nearly enough content in them to warrant 6 years of development from one of the most advanced dev teams in the world. the depths literally only has amiibo items from the previous game and like some bosses that you can refight to grind their drops. other than that it's an empty, barren wasteland with very few points of interest at all. the same goes for the main game, there were like 4 new reward types added and two of them were just 20 rupees with extra steps. i could keep going but tbh i dont feel like typing out a thesis on why this game is disappointing but while it may not have been viable as dlc, it is certainly not enough new content to warrant a whole new game. especially with how lazy the worldbuilding is in this game, like it's actually kind of insane how lazy they were with many aspects. such as most of (but not all) sheikah technology just up and disappearing and nobody has any reason for it? or how most people don't recognize link even though he was the one who saved their kingdom like literally 5 years ago. idk, shit's just lazy and left a bad taste in my mouth. game was still very fun and i played it till the end, but it was also very flawed and you can't really pretend it isn't.
