      @RJsKnives these are important life questions. You have no fear to expose biases and ask the really tough questions. Will we turn to the light (trapper) or follow the dark side ( Moose 🫎). 😃😆🤣😂

    I really like the Moose pattern. I first became interested in the pattern when I read WOODCRAFT AND CAMPING,written by Nessmuk (George W Sears) in 1884. Nessmuk carried a Moose equal end cigar folder for wood carving and light camp work. There's a drawing of his knife in the book and it looks a lot like the Rough Ryder Tater Skin Micarta Moose that you have in your video.
    I have a few Moose knives. My favorite is a Case Bonestag Moose made on the 75 frame, the same as my beloved Case large Stockman.

      I have been keeping an eye out for one of the Case 75 Moose knives. It sounds fantastic. I’m going to see if I can find a copy of Nessmuk’s book. Thanks for all the information!

    Thanks, RJ, for a great #TwoForTuesday (then other examples) compare/contrast/opine on these two classic traditional patterns. My favorite comment you made concerning these two knives are the differences in brands and the way they treat swedging on their blades. While I luv the looks of a swedge ... depending on how they are machined, they are also the "primary culprit" when it comes to hot spots from multiple-bladed knives. Your Case trapper is easy to use and handle because of both the lack of swedging and/or stock thickness removal on the top of the blades. My most recent example of this issue (unfortunately) is the recent release of the Rosecraft Briarpatch Jack ... awesome-looking, dual-bladed knife, but ... lil' rough on the semi-callused hands due to the swedge-machining / stock removal. I find the full-size trapper the most-comfortable knife to use/carry over both the moose/muskrat models I've handled.

    • @RJsKnives
      @RJsKnives  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re right, Byron. Sometimes things like swedging is overdone. That’s the difference between a designer vs. a user. And the full size trapper is a very comfortable knife to use. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Maybe this winter when your grass is dormant we can get you on the live show.

    The Moose pattern is one of many knife patterns based on an equal end cigar shaped knives. The Cattle knife has numerous related knives from camp knives to smaller penknives. Trappers have more variations in sizes and blades making them popular over a large group of knife models and brands than the Moose pattern. Having blades opening from both ends can provide a slimmer design and enables using thicker stronger blades. The pivot pins fit closely to both blades from each end, adding strength to the blades and single brass liner. The Muskrat uses the same build as a Moose without a center brass liner that provides the added strength to a smaller built knife.I like Trappers but there are reasons to like a Moose not always mentioned.👍🤔

    I'm a fan of both patterns, but the trapper is one of my top three favorites. And I've got alot more of them than I have of the moose, though I would like to get a few more moose pattern knives. I really like the large spey blades on both patterns when I'm out hunting, for skinning and even field dressing sometimes. Cheers, buddy!

    Great set of knives. The Spay blade on the Moose, I believe, would be better for skinning (and other general tasks) then the traditional Spay on the Trappers. Except that long swedge would wear on the finger after a while. Moose and Squirrel. Thanks for reminding me how old I am. 😅

    Theoretically a moose could be as thin as a trapper but yes, the extra pivot will make it heavier by default. And by handle shape, the jack config allows you to get more consistent comfort.
    Is there any advantages to the moose beside aesthetic preference? I guess if there were contaminants that affected one pivot you would still have the other side.
    Great topic, thanks for entertaining it RJ.

      @@RJsKnives In the world of modern knives and super steels I admire a bloke that dedicates to classic bone covered slip joints. Inadequate was a joke although it can also be motivation. If it will take more than 40 minutes to organize I'd say don't worry about it.... but it would also indicate what you're dealing with😏

    I sent a picture with a display case full of nine Case knives to HT. I asked him which one this Canadian should buy, I personally like the Copperlock and the Trapper, HT chose the Amber Bone Canoe. They are 150 dollars here in Canada. I guess I have a decision to make, Which would you choose? Great video my friend, I’m so envious of all of your collections.👍🇨🇦🇺🇸

    • @RJsKnives
      @RJsKnives  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the Copperlock or Trapper would be my first choice. The copperlock is nice and slim and a nice carry. The trapper is a good all around knife. Canoes sell for a premium down here so that’s going to be the same there. At the end of the day, it’s your budget and your choice. You can always go back in the future for the others you would like to collect. Hope this helps.
